Right before you asked the driver how much the fare is, you walked past a sign in Thai saying the fare to Mor Chit Bus Station is 40 Baht. Now motorcycle taxi stations have menu boards with the prices to local roads and buildings written out, based on standardised rates. They are, however, written in Thai.

Good to know, but when you flag them down from a random location, you still have to negotiate. In the middle of sukhumvit 16 there is a small gathering of them who shuttle people to Bak soi for 10 baht, I didn’t see and sign there, they just sort of showed up for the lunch time rush of office workers.

@@SimpleLifeThailand They probably have a sign at the top of the soi where they have a stand, but they know that at lunchtime the business is going in the opposite direction so they gather there to shuttle people. It's a very interesting system. My friends who are motorcycle taxi drivers were telling me how highly regulated it is. They said it's much, much easier for someone to become a regular taxi driver than a motorcycle taxi. They take pride in that.
