Chekov took control of an urgent situation, I.E No medical staff (Yes, I know, Tuesday) as an experienced Commander would. There’s not much doctoring done, just helping walking wounded / shocked and dishing out first aid, which you’d think would be basic training for a starship crew.
I agree the chekhov one made sense to me
All Starfleet officers are required to undergo at least basic training in every discipline, in fact you don't actually have to have advanced medical training to conduct advanced medical procedures, provided there's someone on deck with advanced medical training, or your still waiting for Tuesday to roll around lol
Sensible, but I still find it funny that every Starfleet officers knows which button to push on the hypo to get stoned.
Chekov is a temporal agent.
All crew are trained in basic medical triage - hyposprays, dermal regeneration, artificial heart repair, Horta cement mixing, EMH activation - these are things any cadet would know.
Voyager: We look for things. Things that make us go.

I had always just assumed that Chekov had basic field medic training, and more experience under pressure than anyone else in the room, so he took charge when he realized the medical team wasn't scheduled to arrive until the following week.
Exactly! And I frankly never gave it a second thought until watching this video. But you are absolutely correct
Mmm hmm, similar line to Tom Paris having some medical training and eventually becoming Voyager's medic.
Daniel from Spacedock put it best about Voyager when he he said "It was a show about survival and limited resources that pretty much abandoned it's premise in the first 40 minutes."
Except replicators and the ability to harvest fuel from nebulas and gas giants never really made it a thing for a 24th century starship. Look at BSG and how well it was done because getting fuel was hard and they had to have manufacturing to replace stuff, Voyager shouldn't need to make it an issue imho

@@JackVermicelli One of the reasons Starfleet settled on using deuterium and anti-deuterium for "fuel" is because they're both relatively plentiful throughout the Galaxy (at least the fictional Galaxy of Star Trek) and fairly easy to harvest. Apparently, most civilizations that achieve warp drive apparently agree as it seems like the vast majority use the same stuff with the exception of a few outliers like the Romulans' artificial quantum singularity drives and whatever the hell the Borg use.
@@jono_cc2258 BSG had a fleet of ships. Specialized ships that did whatever the plot required. at least one episode focused on the possibility of generational enslavement to a job or ship. But as far as foraging. BSG would worry about tactical concerns in getting the fleet to where they could do whatever it was that they did. Every time voyager was presented with a new or additional ship, it was always a trap.
So they never watched it then, and just jumped on a lazy bandwagon. Got it
Forgive me if someone has already addressed this, but I wanted to offer my interpretation of the whole "women can't be captains" thing: I always interpreted Janice Lester's actual statement - "Your world of starship captains doesn't accept women" or something like that - to mean that James Kirk's devotion to his career meant he did not have room for a relationship in his life, not that Starfleet did not allow any females to command ships. I should point out that I had seen Turnabout Intruder dozens of times over the course of more than a decade before someone suggested the "women can't be captains" interpretation to me.
Beleive it was also their reaction to her. Essentially the "women...am I right?" Response.
I always took it to mean that men prevented women from following the track to become captain. It wasn't against the rules, just impossible to attain. Like armed forces until recently not allowing women in combat, but requiring combat experience to advance.
By the way, I can't think of a better actress for the first female captain than Madge Sinclair.
or, it was the 60's and the studio literally had blocked a woman from being 1st officer and this was gene's way of calling them out in an episode..... which when culture advanced a little he was able to later fix.
I always interpreted that as Lester claiming she could not be a captain because she was a woman, when the real reason was because she was crazy.

For that first one, Scotty could have very well believed that Kirk had somehow survived the Nexus. The man has done impossible things before (and would actually survive the Nexus) so thinking that isn't too difficult to believe.
And a book explained that materialized scotty was slightly disoriented from all that time in the transporter
The Nexus - Stupidest plot device in the history of movies.
Not to mention that Scotty had already seen AT LEAST one person come back from the dead. And there's certainly was no Kirk body recovered. So it's easy for Scotty to think Kirk came back from the seeming dead, took command of the Enterprise, and rescued him.
And to be fair, Kirk DID come back from the dead... just not to rescue Scotty and later than Scotty thought he would.
@@noppornwongrassamee8941 Actually, it's quite forgotten that SCOTTY HIMSELF HAD COME BACK FROM THE DEAD. And besides Spock, he'd also seen Lt. Leslie somehow come back from the dead too.
Actually, no. Scotty was there to see the blown out Enterprise-B deflector room so he at that point knew Kirk was dead especially considering that he had no clue what the Nexus was.
A major point of the Dominion War arc was Starfleet coming up with ways to improve their shields and a lot of those ships were being thrown into battle regardless.
I can get why they weren't able to show shield impacts a lot during season 6-7 because it would be too time consuming and costly for the vfx team pull off, but the writer of this video shouldn't blame the writers for that.
I always thought of it this way; the Battle is raging all around, the shields of the ship's had already been worn down or collapsed once we see the shots of holes being blasted in ships. You would also have an overwhelming amount of fire power being discharged in a massive engagement, so shield systems might simply be overwhelmed and collapse very quickly. They just didn't have the budget needed to show all of that!
It was implied that star fleet was able to develop effective shields after the episode where Sisko salvaged the jem'hadar ship?
@@outbacksptdriver but it may not be the case that every ship was capable of using those modifications, or ships had to be put into battle before they could receive them.
@@outbacksptdriver That assumes the Jem'Hadar just stopped improving their weapons systems after that, though. After the Breen weapons were shown to be super effective against Starfleet and Romulan shields, it's entirely likely the Jem"hadar used that knowledge to make their antipolaron weapons better.
Note: the first Enterprise under command of captain Jonathan Archer has no shields either.

To be fair season 5 was meant to be the season where starbases, shields, and tractor beams were going to be introduced. Wonder if they would have gone back to lasers since phaser development fell behind for a while.
You should do an episode about a starships seemingly unlimited supply of photon torpedoes and shuttlecraft.

Well, Romulan is not their real name, its just what WE call them, as the names come from Roman mythology. The actual name is supposed to be Rihannsu.
Its just like how we call the Asian nation "Japan" even though to them it is called "Nippon"

I thought Romulus and Remus was the suggested translation of the translation-computers for the unspokable native tongue names, though I can't remember the source where I got this from....
I would like to point out that in the episode balance of terror kirk calls the two planets romulus and remus at the start of the episode
They were verbally called “Romulus and Remus” in TOS.
Yeah, I as about to say that. And look at the distance. Romii would be an important world in the Star Empire, but it is hardly the twin planet of Romulus. They're about as far away from each other as the Outposts

Well, Enterprise was supposed to be before Earth developed their own shield technology or traded with others for shield technology and they did have later episodes where the Andorians had equipped them with shields.
I was a bit ticked off with how they showed the transporters as effective as they were, I had expected transporter pad to transporter pad operation or transporter to pad to pattern enhancer operation perhaps with a missile that would split to set up a transporter enhancer cage on the surface which they would have to return to and defend to transport back as well as destroy to avoid giving technology to a given planet. Even TOS had a lot of transporter pad to transporter pad operation especially with the starbases and federation colonies and TNG / Voyager had a lot of episodes where three portable pattern enhancer stands had to be set up. A definite missed opportunity to show an earlier progression of the technology and allowed more dramatic content.

@@killajive1 The one I remember was actually an alternate timeline where Captain Archer was infected with something that gave him amnesia, Earth had fallen to the Xindi and the survivors settled on a distant planet, the Enterprise defended the colony and had shields that the Andorians had installed. I believe there were other late episodes where shields had been installed including the final successful confrontation with the Reptilian and insect Xindi's with the help of the Simians, Sloth and acqueous Xindi's and of course the Andorans (of course the Vulcans seemed to be mostly absent), I seem to remember Andoran shields there but I could be mistaken. Now Star Trek Online claimed the Federation received deflector shield from the Remans and Breen but that would've been well after the Enterprise series as well as likely being non-canon. Also given how unfamiliar the Breen was in TNG and Voyager, I doubt there would've been trade with them pre TOS and Discovery. Note the NX-01 had phase canons while it was said that the Andorans had phasers so there is some suggestions that it may have been the adoption of phasers from the Andorans that later became the Federations weapon of choice.
I believe it was season 4 that Shran helped the Enterprise with shields.
@@johnwang9914 only one I remembered was the episode with the old t’pal. Where the enterprise failed its mission but was sent back to the past. I don’t ever remember them getting shields from the Andorrans
Both the TNG episode Relics and the movie Generations have the same writer. As you noted, Scotty was supposed to be Spock in Generations, so it was supposed to be Spock seeing the aftermath of the loss of the Kirk. As you noted, the script wasn't altered to accommodate the change. That would be why Scotty didn't remember what happened in Relics.

Even if Scotty wasn’t there, he would’ve heard about it! He would’ve gone to Kirk’s funeral. Never mind that they were friends, Kirk’s death would’ve been big news to everyone. There were reporters all over the place!
@@newsduke precisely. It can be assumed that everyone of the TOS crew would have been informed of the incident. You don't lose a major celebrity aboard the maiden voyage of your newest flagship and not have that news travel across the entire quadrant. I'm willing to bet that many old Klingons howled in rage that they weren't the ones to snuff out Kirk upon hearing the news.
and since Scotty was on his way to retirement after the Enterprise-A stood down, he likely never heard about what happened with Kirk because Scotty vanished before Kirk did, thus it's not a plot hole at all.
It makes me sad that voyager didn't take that "there's coffee in that nebula" quote as a running joke and nod to resource gathering off-screen. Can you imagine, characters mentioning to Janeway sometimes about a probable good source of "coffee" ahead or comments about their current stock of "coffee" with her giving them a brief "ha ha so funny" look. Would have made the show twice as good all on it's own.
But that would require callbacks. That would have raised the basic level of writing quality to an u acceptable degree. Next thing you know we would have expected some form of internal consistency. Or gods forbid, even character development
That kind of continuity and inside joke tends to be shot down in favor of stand alone episodes. People that start in the middle or only catch a episode here and there seem to be put off by such things. I agree, it would be better writing.
It's cute but as a one off thing when chakotay is having a briefing with Janeway and she's spacing out distracted. Chakotay realising she's not paying attention reels a couple absurd reports to snap her back. "the eps manifolds on Decks 15 to 13 need addressing, tuvok is pregnant and the ships coffee supply is running dry. Should we look for a nebula?" it works as a callback but doesn't require prior knowledge. "I'm sorry what was that last part?" chakotay grins but is slightly annoyed in that way Robert Beltrane does "just seeing if you were still listening. You seem a little distracted" then set the scene where Janeway is worried about some big plot thread. Then as chakotay is about the leave the ready room distracted himself from whatever Janeway shares with him Janeway calls "oh and commander, congratulate tuvok for me would you." she was listening. A bit of levity gravitas in the same scene and there you go. References and callbacks make for a bit of fun and a treat for the audience, but making them recurring is just a crutch. This scene could be the preamble to the message from the alpha quadrant regarding the fate of the Marquis and the dominion war. This was glossed over because its a episodic show, but this headcanon for these moments would make good connective tissue in writing. You can see how it would unfold and the drama as the Chinese whispers (its has other names in different places but the game where you say a phrase and it passes down the line and changes) as it were passes from Janeway to chakotay, to belanna, to Paris to Kim etc etc as they all react to the news. Getting more dire and extravagant a commentary on news and the reality being sombre, but keeping hope. Neelix is where the whispers end and as morale officer sees how awful that news is. The federations at war with a superior foe, losing. The Marquis is dissolved, incarcerated or dead or on the front line without support. But he too lost a great deal and voyager is the symbol of what they are fighting for at home. It's all set up by the scene with chakotay and Janeway and communication. Finally, it puts the coffee meme to bed because Janeway realises how petty it is compared to the alpha quadrants problems how the Marquis and starfleet problems are petty. Done.
Like the one episode they got a powerful Canon installed but because Seven of Nine killed the salesman before he could complete the last calibrations on the "working weapon" it's just gone in the next episode.

My working theory on the Trill is, there are two kinds in symbiont. Note that in their TNG debut, the symbiont overwrote the host's mind completely. Since that changed as well, my thinking is, some symbionts are too much for the standard host's to handle, so they bond with a different species that can survive the blending. They're still called Trills because that's the name of the slugs.
Trill were originally two separate species that merged later. Goauld + Tokra.
That's what was said in Deep Space Nine, the mere fact Sisko keeps saying 'old man' as well, supports this.
How about the fact that in TNG, the Trill whom was injured in a shuttlecraft accident. Why, because Trill couldn't use transporters as could damage the symbiote. Yet, Jadcia Dax was beaming around without any ill effect to her symbiote- Huh...
The irony of course is that in 'Demon' the idea was that Voyager was running out of deuterium, aka Hydrogen-2... Which is the second most abundant thing in the entire universe behind Hydrogen-1.
Yeah that one got me laughing, almost as much as when LaForge repaired the warp core with cyanoacrylate (superglue).
It may be the most abundant element, but considering the universe is approximately 100% absolute nothingness, it never really bothered me.

For Voyager it was just ineptitude or shortage of writers/researchers, and/or time.

Wouldn’t a better explanation be for the trill that there are two trill attributes? One that have spots and one that has the forehead ridges, basically, two dominate species on a planet? It would add a rich back history. Maybe the two fought for dominance and it was the symbionts that brought peace.
It would just have been better if they hadn't called the DS9 Trills Trills. They could just have introduced Jadzia as someone of a new species and probably mentioned that with the symbiont thing it is is somewhat similar to the Trills, but not entirely.
Alternatively, the Symbionts have their own mini-Federation where any number of species can serve as host. After all, if a human can serve as host, then more than the native Trill species may be able to as well.

But that would make the symbiotes a highly prized commodity. Only the rich and powerful. the most ruthless would get one. How would a young person get one? Powerful family connections probably. One in line for the throne serving in the federation as a hobby. Leadership experience
The first host was the Oonas. They later started using humans and even jaffa.

We could have introduced Worf as an entirely new species, and mentioned that their race is somehwat similar to the Klingons, but not entirely, of course! Hell, let's pull this a bit further, let's call the V shaped ridged Romulans something else! Since they're different from the Romulans we've seen in the Original Series, we could have added some continuity!

Did they forget about it, or did they just remember that they already cured old age when they used the transporter on Pulaski in "Unnatural Selection?"
And not only can the transporters revert anyone back to a previous bodily state (curing old age, diseases, missing limbs, etc.) but they've had easy access to time travel since the original series.

Everyone appears to forget the circumstances of the accident that occurred to Capt Picard, Keiko, Ro and Guinan. Their shuttlecraft encountered an energy anomaly (unknown type of energy) which affected their physical mass. So when O'Brien beamed them back to the Enterprise there was a total loss of 40% resulting in a physical regression of their physical bodies. No doubt Federation scientists have been trying to recreate the circumstances that resulted in the youth regression phenomenon, but without knowing the particulars of the energy anomaly it is a hit and miss form of research. Very much like the cold fusion experiment conducted by Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons in AD 1989. By chance these 2 electrochemists appeared to discovered the process of cold fusion. Unfortunately no one else has successfully re-created the same or similar results so at the moment cold fusion is only a theoretical concept
well it makes sense that everyone on a star ship has SOME medical training , everyone SHOULD know CPR and how to set a broken bone and such

@@syntrilliumc.e.p.9326 that is my point lol so the the video guy saying Chekov having no medical training is bs , when i worked for the forestry in Peterborough Ont Canada in 2003, we had to do a 3 day cpr course then a 5 day course on how to cut down trees safely and how to look up for falling branches and how to hook trees up safely

My favorite is Voyager's nearly unlimited supply of 80+ something torpedoes they started the series with, and used nearly twice that much in the show's run.
Like an wild west movie where they shoot 37 shots out of a 6 shooter WITHOUT RELOADING!!!!
It didn't really show them replenishing their torpedo supply but they did trade with a lot of alien races so they very easily could have done so or could have at least traded for the materials that they needed to construct more.
@@amandamills4133 they always make supplies run on different planets, they always trade with different aliens, they even showed us they can make a Delta Flyer using replicator. I think they even mine their own dilithium, they shouldn't have Problems making fuel, topedos, shuttles, Voyager is self sufficient
@@sungleong People forget that Voyager was designed for long-term exploration and probably had some nice energy reserves for the replicator. That was even made a point when they came across the Excelsior which wasn't.
They made a ton of trades. They didn't specify mention ammo but you damn well know they got it.

150 years before Dr. Janice Lester was mad about not being allowed to be a captain, there was captain Hernandez, a woman captain of the NX02 starship Colombia during Star Trek enterprise.
Star Trek: Enterprise is a step child series. Not thought of as “canon.” Prequels are ridiculous.

Don’t think the one comment about female Captains in the original series attempted to suggest that women were disqualified from Captaincy. TOS had few other Captains revealed. But I liked the Janice Lester episode because it was a study in mental illness and obsession. It doesn’t need to be politically correct for me.
Enterprise was a good series too. But prequels are generally weak. Hernandez was a season 4 addition, but I liked her. Captain Janeway was good, but in the first three seasons, the writers kept having her “discipline” the crew.
So.... maybe it was not about women can't be captains... only that one particular officer was too bad for the big chair ;-)
Doctor Chekov? Well, to also be fair, he never met Khan in person either but Khan was able to remember him in ST2 as well. ;D Just sayin...
It's mentioned (in one of numerous books) that Chekov was originally assigned to the Engineering deck in Season one. He led some of his fellow ensigns to try and retake Engineering. Even though it failed, his attempt got Kirk's attention.
In the book of ST: Generations, Chekov reflects on the basic first aid medical training he had as the Reliant's first officer, and how long it's been since he's used it.

I’ve always explained the Khan/Chekov thing as they met in the restroom.
Even though it wasn't really talked about I have always seen the Ferengi we seen on TNG as the Ferengi space force/military, the Ferengi equivalent to star fleet. They have heavily armed star ships, uniforms, a command structure and the ships were commanded by a DaiMon.
In contrast I have always seen the Ferengi we see on DS9 as the private sector. However unlike the Federation the private sector of the Ferengi alliance had for more power and influence then the military.
I'd honestly never given it any thought, but this perspective totally works for me.
This is actually what I had thought too. If you look at humans we have quite the diversity of personalities and if the Ferengi military is a professional one that would certainly increase the chances that you'd see more militant and/or bloodthirsty Ferengi in it.
@@EvaShogouki01 Right, if anything expecting all individuals of a race to line up perfectly is a caricature and terrible writing. Humanities cultures are so diverse that it makes no sense for an alien species to all be exactly the same (looking at you Klingons).
Agreed. Humans arent monoliths, neither are Romulans or Vulcans or any other race, why should Ferengi be?
There are millions or billions of Ferengi. Some will be combative even if most are just sleazy.
I figured Chekov became a temp CMO just using his Starfleet field medic training that I assume is standard.
The fact all ships had their own symbols on uniforms, only after the 5 year mission did they all use the Enterprise one in tribute... so all the bits set before that time, well... continuity problem.
That was a production error that was quickly rectified.
The Borg just needs to start doing cyber attacks to fuel lines... then everyone would have an "Oh, dear, we're out of fuel" episode followed by an "Oh, dear, we've been assimilated" episode.
They'd just have to pay the Borg's ransomware payoff in StarCoin

The Borg apparently are super sensitive to depression and implode if they get too sad in picard. Starfleet just needs to upload the Ash death scene from pokemon or Johnny 5 getting broken from short circuit 2 and they'll all shut down.
I kind of expected the appearance of Klingons to be on there. Between the original series, Next Generation, and Discovery, they look very different. I understand that the makeup and effects of the original would not have been up to standards of later series, but I'm sure the way they look in Discovery is different, and it's not just the lack of hair.
Discovery is its own thing for mostly legal and licensing reasons due to CBS vs Paramount. As for TOS vs TNG and beyond, Enterprise ultimately was forced to explain that because DS9 ruined the idea that they always looked like they did with ridges and TOS just wasn’t able to visualize it for us the audience yet with a joke.
Discovery isn't Star Trek, that's why ;)
DS9 even had an episode where they used clips from the TOS tribbles episode, and when they see the Klingons someone asks Whorf, "Those are Klingons?", and he replies, "It's ... complicated" and changes the subject.

The idea they had to make the changes for 'legal reasons' is totally way past debunked. They just thought it looked cool and did it. And will probably never admit it was a huge mistake and instead justify it as 'well Klingons changed before, so why not again?' (pouty face)

It was a disappointment for sure. But, there was one other Trek film that disappointed me before ST 5. Star Trek 3 was the first to leave me shaking my head when I left the theater.

The thing about Voyager having having to get fuel is - that was always a stretch. The ship has bussard collectors for harvesting stray hydrogen particles from space, to say nothing of the transporter that could probably be used to very easily get hydrogen from any gas giant.
Indeed. AFAIK, we've NEVER had a Star Trek episode that so much as showed a routine fueling operation. In hundreds of episodes that start off with doing this or that routine operation, not one of them involved refueling. Plenty of episodes having routine maintenance... but no refueling. Which kinda implies that refueling isn't a thing because starfleet ships at least can make their own fuel... which is kinda implied by having bussard collectors.
Voyager had refueling episodes because they're in unknown territory and don't know where the best places to get fuel are.
@@noppornwongrassamee8941 the thing about bussard collectors is, they're supposed to be constantly pulling in hydrogen particles, which exist even in the void between star systems. But one could assume that this is at best a "trickle charge" that wouldn't necessarily keep up with the ship's needs. Still, hydrogen is the most common element in the universe it shouldn't be difficult to find. The real fuel pinch they could have introduced is anti-matter. Not sure if it was ever mentioned in canon, but according to the TNG technical manual, the Galaxy class had facilities on board for converting regular matter to anti matter. But it was an energy and material intensive process, meant more for emergency situations. Under normal circumstances they would refill their anti matter supply at a starbase. They could have written it so that only big ships like the Galaxy class had these facilities, or that Voyager's were damaged beyond repair in the first episode. That way they would have had to barter for more anti matter.
Anti-matter is what they need to find. Hydrogen is fine for fusion reactors (i.e. impulse drive) but warp needs significantly more energy. And no, the transporter can't magically fix that problem -- it takes power for the transporter to do anything. (and it's a far too lame plot device.)

That's kinda just Voyager being Voyager though. The early seasons fuel was a significant plot point on more than one occasion but in a later season Tom Paris comments that "you can get deuterium anywhere".

Good point. Even the idea of a centralized essential component (cortical node) is not aligned with the concept of the original Borg presented in STTNG. Their ships were ultra-redundant and all essential functions were distributed throughout the ship. That's partly what made them so terrifying. Their ship could be 90% damaged and still function. Same problem with the Borg Queen concept (an essential individual among the collective).

Just a couple lines every now and the of dialogue would fix Voyager's resource issues. Mention trading missions, retrofitting an area for antimatter production, a cargo bay getting an industrial replicator built in it. Boom! Problem solved.

Not every person knows how to fly a ship or repair space craft. There’s just no reason to believe the Dialogue wouldn’t work. None of the dialogue bothered me. Chekov is an officer with some experience of working under pressure so makes sense that he'd step in and do something proactive. Doesn't seem like he'd be the kind of person to just sit and watch the freshly beamed in refugees sit and suffer.
The "Remus or Romii" issue actually is fully encompassed in the episode "Balance of Terror", seeing as Kirk uses the former in his captain's log early in the episode.
Guess the continuity people were asleep. But this was early enough in the show's run they still hadn't settled on the name Starfleet, the name United Federation of Planets or the fact that Earth wasn't the only world calling the shots.
In the Next Generation, we were told that Trills with a symbiant could not travel via the transporter. Yet that principle was totally abandoned in Deep Space 9.
In my personal head-canon, the original Trills were a totally different species to Dax's one who also happened to carry a symbiont (which also looked very different) inside their bodies and Starfleet's Universal Translator simply messed up on that occasion and that is all.
Plus, there was another major difference. In case of the original "Trills", the "symbiont" took over their given host's body and personality COMPLETELY and thus there was nothing much 'symbiotic' involved in the relationship; it was actually rather parasitic, unfortunately.

Running out of fuel would not mean it "falls off to the side" unless they were in a gravity well, but it WOULD make the ship lag behind if they were all accelerating to outrun the First Order and eventually the First Order (also accelerating) would catch the stricken ship and annihilate it.
Such a theory could work for a drifting backwards, but not to the side.

Scotty was not shy about using hyperbole under normal circumstances, so in a situation like that, yea, he was definitely talking out his rear.

To number 6 - the size of the galaxy:
You have to think 3-dimensionally! In the TOS Episope, it was only said that the Enterprise was going to the edge of the galaxy. But nobody said that the Enterprise made all the way on the very flat disk of the galaxy to the edge, like the voyager has to to get home. The Enterprise could have simply taken the much shorter way to the edge by simply flying a bit up or down (parallel to the galaxy axis) so the very short journey to the upper or lower edge of the galaxy can be easily explained. Our galaxy, the Milky Way, is indeed very flat ;)
That was always my assumption for the TOS episode. Doesn't work for STV flying to the centre of the galaxy of course.
This is what I was thinking. I'm not sure why the guy decided they had to travel across the entire galaxy to get to the edge when they could just travel north/up or south/down relative to the Earth. That's a difference between roughly 95 000 light years and something like 20 000 light years if travelling along the disc of the galaxy, or just a couple of thousand light years if they head straight up or down. It's the galactic equivalent of running in a straight line to outrun a huge thing slowly falling over to crush you when you can just sidestep the entire thing. TL;DR: The galaxyis not a flat disc. We're allowed to fly out of it in any direction we want, we're not bound to two axis.
Or yknow, they could have travelled to the edge, and the whole trip just took a year. Remember, season 1 was 2265 and 2266, the whole trip could have started in 2265 and they only arrived in 2266
also, the could just have gone to the end of the Alpha Quadrant. In Voyager, they explicitly travel to the delta quadrant.
It was established in DS9 that the federation did something later on to modify their shields to better withstand dominion weapons fire.
Why didn't they just use the one the Enterprise used to hold off V'Ger's plasma bolt? If it could hold that off it could certainly stop anything the Dominion had.
True but seeing those orbital weapon platforms take out a galaxy class starship with just 2 or 3 torpedoes was a bit ridiculous. Some ships got shot down so easily but as usual, the Defiant got hit countless times with minimal effect lol.

Also you forgot to mention in First Contact the Enterprise had the standard shield bubble, but in Insurrection the shields were flat against the ship hugging every curve...no more bubble. And do I EVEN got to mention Spot's sex change?

At least the story telling and characters weren't written so badly that it poised the franchise... I actually tapped out after season 1 of discovery. Enterprise was bad, but the acting was decent and it got really good in its final season, but discovery is just cry babies or emotionless stumps that follow insane lines of irrational events and they are forced to repcon basically everything from all other existing timeliness... Te writers also have stated they aren't star trek fans, and it shows.

RomII is clearly in a separate system, based on how far apart they are on the map and how long the position of Enterprise takes to move the same amount of distance. Also lets not forget, the Neutral Zone itself is light years across, so take that into account on the map as well
One change that is never mentioned in DS9 is latinum turning from a solid to a liquid. Early on they had a solid latinum tooth sharpener offered Odo a sloid latinum bucket and spoke of shaving the latinum. Later it turns out latinum is a liquid and we are supposed to forget the past..
Well maybe it can be both. They have technology we wouldn't necessarily understand.
latinum in its pure state is a liquid but is made into alloys that are solid for ease of use so anything solid is an alloy, just like how gold jewelry is almost never pure gold because gold is so soft it would damage too easily so it's mixed with things to make it harder

To be fair on Voyager's fuel levels, it's possible that they just stopped focusing on it. Rations never stopped being a thing, IIRC, and thus perhaps they did have "oh dear, fuel's low" struggles...but as you said, we'd seen them before, so unless they were a good spur into something more interesting, they happened off-screen.
I don't remember rations being a concern on Voyager. They even had Chef de partie Neelix in the galley cooking up a storm when wasn't on his guide/interpreter/babysitting duties of course.

Neelix was brought aboard as a chef precisely because they could take the pressure off the replicators by actually trading/foraging for or growing food, and he knew how to take the raw foods they obtained and make them into actually tasty stuff.
I actually think the fuel shortage was, in no small part, to specifically justify Neelix running a cafeteria.

Cooking can be done with waste heat, or with fuel that can't run the starship. Replicators run off of main power.

He hears the name of his old ship and thinks he's dreaming or Riker is pulling his leg, so he reacts accordingly. Reminds me of something James Doohan said about William Shatner in an interview. They asked him how he felt about Shatner. He said that Scotty would risk his life to save Captain Kirk, but James Doohan wouldn't walk across the street to save William Shatner. I'm guessing he didn't like him very much.

As Voyager supplemented their energy supplies, they were able to use their replicators more, and thus, manufacture more photon torpedos... At least, this is my theory.

@@blazechicken6822 The antimatter is made using the deuterium they regularly mine and from hydrogen collected by the bussard collectors which are transformed in to antideuterium and antihydrogen. I think they also collect it from some rare nebulae during the show but ultimately they usually just trade for it. Remember they're stopping, trading and making contact with many other races during the show. Not just the ones we see....and that's how they supply most of their needs. Which is difficult at first but once they can power the replicators they have a lot of bargaining power. Since many species they meet don't have that technology.

if you split an ellipse into 4 Quadrants, then the original Enterprise could have gone both to the center of the galaxy and the NEAR edge of the galaxy without ever leaving the Alpha quadrant. Voyager was then thrown to the diagonally opposed quadrant across the entire galaxy. this is the way i have always thought of that one.
You're correct. Whatculture is trying to pretend their is equivalence between traversing between the Inner and outer radii of a doughnut as The Enterprise did versus traversing it's circumference as Voyager was attempting do.
It should still take 50 years at warp 9 (Voyager time) to go from the edge of the galaxy disc to it's center (almost 20 kpc away, 60% of what Voyager had to travel).
If in the original series the original series the Enterprise could go to the edge of the galaxy in hours, what does wherever Voyager is have to do with it?

With regard to the shields, I always assumed that the Defiant had shields that were both more powerful and more advanced, to go along with her advanced weapons.
It would make sense because the ship was supposed to fight the Borg. Starfleet would have at least tried to come up with better shields to counter the Borg.

Agreed, that was the whole idea of the Defiant. It was a very powerful and advanced fighter. I think I recall them saying once that it almost tore itself apart early in testing. And yes, the Voyager crew was constantly revising their strategy for conserving energy. They got pretty good at it.

The reasoning I use for anytime they modify an established species appearance (like the Klingons). Some ethnic group of the species is more common away from their settled planets, or is, at the time, more dominant than the others. Throw darts at a map of Earth and each hit has a different physical description of 'human'.
BTS: I just learned that Ronald D. Moore was aware of the Scotty contradiction when they were making Generations happen. Said it would be drastic to leave Scotty out (and perhaps awkward to work an explanation in) because of one line from Relics. Figured viewers could reconcile.
There are a couple popular head canons and at least one explanation you'll find on Memory Beta.
General summary of fan theories: seeing as Scotty beamed out (all the way out) for, what, decades to await rescue, figure a side effect is his memory's not all there when the rescuers beam him all the way back in.
From the novel, The Return: it may or may not figure into it that Spock (not prone to irrational denial) had reason to believe Kirk was falsely presumed dead following the Enterprise B incident. (Bear with me. It's been a long time since I read it.) Between x number of mind melds with Kirk and Spock's nigh-unique "frame of reference" for death, Spock insists he'd simply have "felt" it if the Captain died.
Although he may never have told Scotty that. Troi brings up the strange Scotty line directly. (It's a little forced.) She says in so many words that Kirk is the new Elvis. Scotty would take any chance he can get to stoke Kirk's legendary status.

I was at a Star Trek convention in 1994 and James Doohan was one of the guest speakers(along with Michael Dorn and Marina Sirtis) and this question came up. I can't remember exactly what he said but it was something along the lines of "it was just one of those things".
Normal almost every episode. 1. Everything starts off OK. 2. Antagonist disrupts peaceful way of things. 3. " Good Guys " get hurt and almost lose. 4. Last second thinking or actions save the day. 5. Back to Everything is OK. ALMOST EVERY EPISODE!!!
I would also add replicators. Sometimes these can magically duplicate anything you want in unlimited quantities, and on other occasions you have to have a dramatic encounter with some alien culture to barter for some unobtainable part (all alien spaceship parts are of course plug compatible).
Energy resource limitations, and there are some things that for some reason aren't replicable...which is why the whole gold-pressed latinum thing exists.
With Matter resequencers, NX-01 level tech, it is quite possible that Starfleet or the Federation has adopted a law to permit using Tribbles as Live stock on ships to provide a virtual unlimited food source that could be self-replicate and be resequenced into other sources such as meats, fabric for clothing, etc.
Remember the Federation has times where is justifies actions that are against the majority views and as we see in later seasons of discovery, the Federation Falls.
My family watches Star Trek every night. Even my non-trekkie mom noticed the different Trill makeup. She knew Dax from watching a DS9 episode, but couldn't believe me when we saw TNG's Trill.
Everything about voyager. Fuel. Their fleet of shuttlecraft. The fact that at the start of every episode the ship looks like it's just rolled out of Utopia Planitia

A few small things though when the USS Odyssey is destroyed by the Dominion kamikaze attack the Capitan said "divert shield power to weapons" when they see the phased polaron beams cut right though the shields so shields were down but they didn't think they would ram the ship. Also I agree to the notion the entire voyager series should of been more like the "Year of Hell" the 2 part episode which many of the writers were actually planning to make that an entire season of Voyager but the studio wanted a more episodic formula and you couldn't do that when damage and plots had to carry for an entire season. Star Trek Enterprise did something like that when they were searching for the Xindi weapon and that's one of the better parts of the series in my opinion.
I agree at much as the temporal war was a tad...silly. I thanked the writers for carrying more about the plot and story on Enterprise, and I enjoyed it more.

Warp Factor was supposed to be an logarithmic scale with actual speed approaching infinity as you approached 10 - hence Warp 9 is really fast, Warp 9.9 is really really fast, and Warp 9.99 is really really really fast :-)
Yeah, by my calculation, Voyager should have been able to get back to earth in about 25 days at warp 7.
Not to mention that the warp scale could have very well been changed to better accommodate the faster speeds that ships were becoming capable of. Allowing for warp speeds above 10 is far easier than constantly adding more numbers post decimal point.
One theory I read was that warp 12 would be 9.99 and 13 would be warp 9.999.The scales above 10 are not actually over 10 but were just to simplify things instead of counting out decimals.

They captured a Dominion ship and had the ability to analyze it, that's why their shields became effective against Dominion weapons. Before that, the Dominion's polaron weapons were a new, unknown factor, and the shields weren't designed with that in mind. This is actually brought up in the show.
Yes, it was disconnected but mentioned. The real reason for the lack of shields in visuals is the computer technology of the time, computer modeling was brand new and couldn't deal with it on a tv budget/timeline. You can justify this by saying the show just gave us a summary of a large battle, we don't have 3 hours to watch weapons hit shields and nothing happens.
It was also a large reason they were able to goosestep the Alpha quadrant empires soneadily

The bio neural gel packs equipped to the voyager increased regeneration in shields akin to a cut on the skin prompts rapid as fast as a neron response to defend that exposed area. Manually you have to redirect power and use manpower to adjust shield regen. A partial organic ship reacts. Almost thinks like an organic. Voyager was lost in the badlands and such an experimental bio mechanical setup was held responsible. Distances have never made sense in Star Trek. I just re-watched 'Q Who?' from TNG Season 2. Q brings them 7.000 lightyears away and it's said, that the Enterprise would need 2,5 years to get back home.
And the Voyager needs 30 times as long for 10 times the distance. And the Voyager is way faster than the Enterprise .
How about in ST TNG episode "Where no one has gone before" after they ended up on the far side of Triangulum, a distance of 2.7 MILLION light years, Geordi said it would take over 300 years to get home. If they used Voyagers speed it would take them over 2700 years to get back (assuming they could survive long enough for the trip between galaxies.
Well, as JMS, I believe, said: ships move at the speed of plot. Or plot convenience. Which can still be taken to ridiculous extremes if plot convenience demands that your ship travel from one star system to another within minutes or so. Like in Trek 09, when Vulcan is apparently just around the corner, relatively speaking.
Chekov was a First Officer on a starship, a security chief, and a long term member of Starfleet it's not beyond the realm of possibility that Chekov had an EMT level of training if not on the level of a full on Paramedic.

People who work and live on deep space ships probably have to know how to do multiple things even if it's not their specialty.
It's probably almost a guarantee that anybody who is trained in ship security is probably trained in medical triage too. It's likely that during a planetary rescue or shipwide emergency there isn't enough medical staff to handle everything so people in other disciplines learn the basics of medical triage.
Plus with their level of technology they probably can just scan the body with a tricoder, and simply the tricorder will tell them three CCs of whatever medicine is required lol

1:00 I have pointed this out in other places, but the "Scotty forgetting Kirk was dead" mistake is easy to explain. Anyone who has lost a friend or loved one know how easy it is to forget that person is dead, especially if that death is unexpected.
Considering that Scotty had just spent years in a transported buffer, that has to have an effect on your memory.
It is totally plausible that Scotty just forgot for a moment that Kirk had died. After all, Scotty likely booked passage on the ship very shortly after the events on Enterprise B.
Frankly I think mocking that explanation is just stupid, as it is quite plausible. Unless you know a reason it isn't.

And it’s absolutely plausible that even with a clear memory he would still have such a thought. He didn’t actually witness Kirk’s death (Kirk didn’t actually die anyway), so of course he almost certainly always held out hope that he was somehow alive somewhere.
That's what happens when you have "writers" that don't love or understand Star Trek. In STOS, they had a book (The Star Trek Guide) that told writers what the ship "could " do and .... what it "couldn't" do. Now , they just throw stories together. And it shows!
Weird because here they only talk about continuity errors in original shows TOS, TNG, DS9, Voyager... or you saying that writers of that shows don't understand Star Trek?!
When it comes to Voyagers fuel, I was under the impression that's what a lot of Voyagers trade missions were about. As for Torpedo's I've said a couple of times they should have started an episode with Kim and another crewmen building a couple in a cargo bay.
Yeah they could have replicated the parts if they had the energy. Good point.
They designed and built a new type of shuttle ( the Delta Flyer). I'm sure they could figure out how to make more torpedoes.

Oo, another one: Voyager’s shuttles! From seasons one through five they kept losing shuttles. Then in one episode in season five Chakotay says, “we have a full complement of shuttles.“ I am always like, no you don’t!
They built the Delta Flyer from scratch, why not a shuttle? They also used the transporter on a few occasions to grab the wreckage from planets.

In DS9 they said they made upgrades to the shields to better deal with dominion weapons. Also Mire then once in Voyager they talk about trading with others for supplies. That is how they dealt with the fuel (and torpedo) issues.
I just loved how the whole episode of flashback shows how dimitri is dead but when you see the undiscovered country he’s clearly alive and well on the bridge when Captain sulu says his goodbyes to the crew of the original enterprise
It actually makes sense for Chekov of be a doctor, he's done just about every other job in Starfleet. He started out as a navigator (Command), was a security chief in ST:TMP (Operations), and was Reliant's science officer (Science) in ST:TWoK. Only think left for him to do is become a sinister telepath and try to take over the world...

As far as Voyager goes I think think the writer's have gotten tired of writing episodes of oh no we need more supplies, or they realize that the viewers were getting tired of oh know we need supplies.

One thing that might be explainable is how the holosuites defies the space. Saw a DS9 episode with Vic Fontaine and Nogs problem with his leg, where the group of main characters easily could be away from each other walking around in that small mall like casino, where the holosuiteroom only is about 7x7 meters? (after further research, ds9 s7 e10)
Pretty accurate but 2 things are kinda off..
1st Kirk di Not use His fists or even c*ck to solve Problems Most of the time. He actually TALKED His way Out of Bad situations much more than Most people seem to know.
And 2nd the whole Problem with Not working shilds in DS9 can easily be dismissed due to having a war between 2 very different factions (Dominion VS Federation) and that shields are Not adequate to the different and constant Weapon Changes and Upgrades of both factions...

They most definitely had physical armor plating added to the hull. It was mentioned a few times during the run of the show, partly because Sisko didn't tell Starfleet that he'd done it.

A lot of Star Fleet officers would have Field Medic training so having Chekov taking up a medical job in Generations should not be strange.
Voyager did not have a field medic before leaving for the Bad Lands was because they had a doctor on board and the Field Medic would arrive on Tuesday.
I did notice and question why no ships had any shields for the Dominion war scenes. But I figured it was just a shortcut taken by the VFX teams. It was also funny in DS9 how much of a beating Runabouts could take in that show when Galaxy class starships are getting completely owned by much less.
