    How does a team go from a half-decade plus of terrible play, to 3 minutes shy of the Super Bowl...right back to being terrible the next year? Well...the 2017 Jacksonville Jaguars are not like most teams.

    To think we were that close to a Super Bowl match-up between Blake Bortles and Nick Foles (or maybe Case Keenum if Philly didn't torch the Vikings).
    I may not have been watching football back then, but hearing about Sacksonville in hindsight, I kind of feel like they may have had a real chance to at least keep the Super Bowl close with the Eagles. Sure, that Eagles squad was a great team, but they barely squeaked by the Patriots by eight points even despite the Pats defense playing really badly (funny how Matt Patricia helped hand the Eagles a Super Bowl with his bad defense and then later helped ruin Philly's conference title defense with more bad defense). With that in mind, you gotta wonder if the Sacksonville defense could have stopped the Eagles there, even if their offense wasn't nearly as good as New England's.

    • @dimitrytimothee1590
      @dimitrytimothee1590 4 месяца назад +3

      Honestly Jags would have got blown out by the Eagles because Eagles was unstoppable in the SB

    • @joeygambone4757
      @joeygambone4757 4 месяца назад +3

      The Eagles would have totally blown out the Jags. People forget that the Patriots defense was pretty good too that season, as it usually was. Bortles would have been a turnover machine. If Brady who put up 500 yards didn’t beat the Eagles, then no one could. I like hypotheticals, but Bortles would not have competed with Nicky Foles whatsoever.

    • @SortaNonymous
      @SortaNonymous 4 месяца назад

      @@joeygambone4757 Obviously Bortles in that game wouldn't have compared to how Brady or even Foles performed there. But it was mainly a matter of the defense, although admittedly it seems like the Sacksonville defense struggled with late stretches in the playoff games. They allowed 28 points by the Steelers in the second half (even if the last seven came when there was so little time left that Pittsburgh didn't even try an onside kick and just decided to get out of there), and of course went from shutting down New England 20-10 to allowing 14 points within the last few minutes (although of course that infamous Myles Jack call didn't exactly help a ton). Against that Jaguars team and especially that defense, I still think the Eagles win, especially with how that defense was a bit less vaunted for their pass coverage (they weren't exactly the No-Fly Zone), but I do think that Super Bowl LII could have definitely been a very different game and maybe not quite the most lop-sided had the Jaguars made it instead, even with Jacksonville's comparitively unremarkable offense.
      Of course though, we didn't get that match-up and so we'll never know for sure what would have happened. I mean hey, maybe there's a timeline out there where Keenum's Vikings made that Super Bowl and they put such an unexpected spanking on the Patriots that it made the '85 Bears Super Bowl look like a nail-biter by comparison. Completely unrealistic, sure, but it's definitely funny to think about.

    The 2017 Jags are, by far, one of the greatest overachievers in NFL history. That team was basically one of the biggest afterthought in the NFL, even when they were doing relatively well in the season. Then they come into the playoffs and play smash-mouth, grindnose football against the Bills, a team of destiny by some accounts for breaking the (at the time) longest active playoff drought there was, and providing one of the greatest playoff upsets that wasn't in the Super Bowl. The fact that they went toe-to-toe with the Patriots IN NEW ENGLAND and nearly made it speaks a lot to how much of a threat they were, and even moreso when you see how they started off the 2018 season before they fell off a cliff. I think if they make that Super Bowl against the Eagles, they even had a chance to win, or at least make it one of the greatest Super Bowls of all time by making it a brutal battle with them to see who would get their first ring.

    Tom Brady got 2 crazy terrible calls to win that game. Gronk got an PI from out of bounds. The jags won on the field but couldn’t beat the NFL and their refs

    Refs robbed us of greatness that year. Can't stand when people try to say the league rigs games for Jacksonville

    I really wanted to see jaguars at least go to SB. I was having fun seeing the owner happy. I hope Texans don't devolve. Luckily our team is brand new. Few are at the end of their contracts.

    You see what happens when you put a good team around Bortles, he can go to the superbowl and that's what you forget.

    One only had to look at their 2017 schedule and realize that the season was a total fluke….
    7 of their 10 wins came against these guys….Joe Flacco, Andy Dalton, DeShone Kizer, Jacoby Brissett X2, Tom Savage (Deshaun Watson came in after halftime), TJ Yates…..hell they also LOST to QBs like Blaine Gabbert, Josh McCown, and Jimmy G. It was wuite possibly the easiest schedule in NFL history.
    On their defense, they finished with 55 sacks as a team…..28 of those, more than half the total, came against only 2 teams….the Texans and the Colts…..both teams fielding the 2 worst O-Lines at the time and also both teams missing their franchise QBs (Watson and Luck respectively).
    It was literally no surprise they would suck the very next year with a first place schedule (facing BETTER QBs) and having to then face their division rivals (Texans, Colts) with their franchise QBs healthy (they went 1-3 vs the Texans/Colts in 2018).

    I'm an Eagles fan and I was so pissed the Jags blew that game against the Pats. I figured we'd get to watch the Birds lose to Brady again but it's so much more satisfying that their Super Bowl win came against the Patriots dynasty.

    Surprised you didn't mention that the Jags had the ball and good field position and timeouts before the half of the AFC CCG and yet chose to sit on the ball and go to the half.
