A lot of people miss the significance of the shooter and his "I am Vengeance." Those shooters and the Riddler thought they were just doing what Batman was doing, taking out criminals. It was that exact moment when he realized that you have to stand FOR something, not just against something. I suspect that is the moment that will get him to try to improve the city as Bruce Wayne instead of just focusing on Batman.

This is the Batman movie that feels the most like a Batman comic - the world's greatest detective solving a mystery while being a disaster in his personal life. The shots at the end of Bats helping survivors, being a hero when there's no bad guy to fight, is the Batman I grew up with

  • @WraithWTF

33:55 This is probably the best representation of the duality of Batman that any movie has managed to capture: he's simultaneously the brutal monster in the shadows to the criminals of Gotham, while also being the single glimmer of hope in the darkness for the innocents. It's also the first time anyone, civilian or police, has seen him doing something other than just being a vigilante...it's his first "hero" moment, which makes it just that much more powerful. You see it in the reverse callback, from when the subway would-be victim begs Batman not to hurt him, to the person being airlifted clutches at him for safety cause they're afraid of the airlift. Such a good bit of filmmaking.

After watching this a few times, I found the overarching message throughout the entire movie is "Vengeance isn't Justice."
It shows Batman in what seems like his early times, flawed in what he sees himself as. He calls himself Vengeance thinking this is his message, and that criminals need only fear retribution from him to deter them from crime. He refers to himself as Vengeance apparently so much so that everyone knows him as "the Vengeance guy."
He's so consumed by the need to punish the evil in the city, he's not even attempted any humanitarian/charity work that his family was previously known so well for. Bruce Wayne is a fabled recluse of a man, disconnected from the city.
Batman is known so well for his message that the Riddler thinks he is doing the same thing Batman is by joining him in vengeance, in organizing similar people who also want payback for how they were wronged, on the crooked elite. Batman's message has the unintended effect, creating more evil rather than eradicating or deterring it.
Catwoman does the same, Batman seeing so much more clearly from the outside that she's ruled by her need for revenge for both Anni and her mother, and is willing to pay more than it would give back to her to get it.
Batman discovers that he has to no longer be vengeance, because vengeance can't help the city or its people become better.

    • @CybrSlydr
      @CybrSlydr 2 года назад +4

YES!!! This is the most underrated aspect of this movie that a lot of reactors fail to mention or notice.
Vengeance is too personal and specific a thing to be a universal panacea. Vengeance is too subjective - one man's vengeance is another's evil. Seeing him realize that when he took the goon's mask off and then coming into the light at the end to help evacuate people, leaving the shadows - that was an absolutely immensely satisfying moment. That's when the movie went from an 8/10 to a 10/10 for me.

*I just thought about this and maybe it’s already been said. But him sacrificing himself to prevent the civilians in the water from being electrocuted to death was almost like a rebirth. A sort of baptism, as he rose up from the water. Embracing himself as the hero we know and not just seeking “vengeance”*

I love that there's a real sense of personal growth for Bruce in this film, realizing that he's the direct inspiration for a bunch of vindictive villains and that he has to change.
Also, I don't know if anyone else did but once I heard the mayor talk about a seawall on TV I had an inkling that'd be the Chekhov's Gun in the final act. After all "Ave Maria" can mean "Hail Mary"-- as in a desperate act, but it can also mean "Hail/Welcome the Seas". Very cool wordplay, adding riddles in the soundtrack itself.

May I humbly suggest you start with 'There Will be Blood'. You don't act opposite greats like Daniel Day Lewis, Hugh Jackman, Robert Pattinson and Chiwetel Eijiofor and still be considered a master in the scene unless you're highly adept. Check him out

There was a comic book series "Legends of the Dark Knight" which focused on the early years of Batman... This movie captured that storyline perfectly, as well as Frank Miller's 'The Dark Knight' comic book from the 80's. James Gordon was Batman's only ally in the Gotham Police Dept. because it was so corrupt from mob money... Batman saved Gordon from being killed or hurt by crooked cops, and helped him break criminal cases...
In one storyline, Gordon tried to figure out Batman's identity... he even met w/ Bruce Wayne, but Bruce (and Alfred) set up a meeting where he appeared to have spent the night partying w/ call girls and came off hung over and somewhat arrogant... So, Gordon dismissed the possibility that he was Batman.
Even in Batman's prime, he always made Bruce Wayne appear in public as this womanizing bachelor who was more interested in making money and shaking hands... but did all his charity work in private to help Gotham City.
In the comic book, Batman is a hero... but is also dangerous. He can be cunning, manipulative, driven, obsessive, secretive and very much resorts to any means to get things done. You can see those traits in this movie... even when he's talking to Selina & Gordon.

The rat with wings is not even in Spanish. In Spanish we say Rata Con alas (pronounce Rah-ta Cone Ah-Las), do not know what language The Riddler was using.

14:57 He was in Chernobyl, at the beginning, forcing everyone to stay in the town and forcing people to look into the core.
    31:36 Come again?

Mary - You need to seek out and react to The Batman Joker Deleted Scene. I understand why they cut it, but really wish they would have found a way to have kept it in. It's really something.

I have to admit, I was skeptical when I heard the kid from Twilight was playing Batman, but I was excited for the movie when I first saw the trailer and I was not disappointed when I watched the movie. I loved the batmobile in this movie. It just looks like something a younger man would drive. It’s not really high tech, have a bunch of weapons. It’s more of a garage built hot rod.

One of my favorite movies from the last decade is _What We Do in the Shadows_ it later had a spin-off tv series that is also hilarious.

If Riddler had not flooded the city, he would have been the hero Gotham needed.

I enjoyed this film. Maybe more because it was influenced a bit by the "Long Halloween" story line, which last year had been adapted more faithfully as two animated movies. I highly recommend those.

Whoever did the make-up for the penguin deserves all types of awards! FYI, if you didn't know, Colin Farrell was the actor who portrayed the penguin in this Batman flick. As much as I'm tired of DC running back & rebooting Batman over & over again when they have so many characters they could do stuff with, this is probably the best overall superhero flick going right now. Ugh, damn it, lol. (Also, the green stuff he shot up into himself was Venom Toxin if I had to guess)

Time for some light hearted fun, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989) or The Last Starfighter (1984) would bring you some goofy adventures as a break from all the death and violence 😊
