I saw this in IMAX 3D. The 3D was subtle. It just made the movie more immersive. Sometimes a floating object floated at or past you or you felt like you were IN the scene with them. That was the most groundbreaking aspect.

James Cameron said he didn't want to make a "in your face" 3D but one that expands the field of view.
      And they perfectly nailed it.
The screen isn't the background where stuffs pop out, it's the foreground where the scene deepens, like looking at a window leading to a new world

I would occasionally look at over at the person I saw it with and we both looked at each other like 'what the hell are we watching?!' The 3D was immersive! It was done so well in a time when 3D in a movie was usually for gimmicks where the character would reach out at the audience or something and this was the first one that almost did the opposite. This is gonna sound cheesy AF but it's the truth.
I saw this movie in theaters in 3D and it was basically a spiritual experience for me.
The 3D wasn't crazy, but it was just enough that if you allowed your brain to go along with it...became super immersive. I remember, when Home Tree was taken down and ash was flying everywhere, trying to bat it out of my face.
I walked out of the theater, feeling like I was disembarking a spaceship, having returned to Earth. I was disoriented as hell and had to sit in my car for a while to decompress. I felt like I had been gone for years. That all of the things in my car had sat there, waiting for my return, to trigger memories of my life on Earth.
    .
The goal of most all people in the movie business is to transport the viewers to the world they are creating, with the sights, the sound design, the music...but this was the first time that I felt literally transported. I will never forget it.
I will do my best to see the sequels in theaters.

you must be young. Hollywood is a business first. in the 50s, when 3d first came out, it was to compete with tv, which was becoming the dominant entertainment. then they brought it back in the 70s, again to compete with tv, because cable was spreading fast, more channels and better picture. it was always a gimmick. boosted profits temporarily. and now with everyone using CGI effects in everything, it comes back again. almost always bad scripts and no name actors because the 3d cameras and film were so expensive. i hope you and others can watch some of the old 3d movies, there good in a cheesey MST3K kind of way.

One of the things I love about this movie is the underatted story of The Doctor Grace:
A scientist of her caliber would not believe in religion/afterlife, in the end of the movie... someone like her that has at least passion for her work and is Human .. learns that she can take steps into the shoes of a Navi. Take a second shot at being young and healthy again, from a scientist perspective that should give them a form of enlightment because mortality has a on and off switch. In the end, Grace pleads for the Navi knowing that the connection to a higher purpose doesn't just means a social and cultural experience. It means that through a wider range of living with nature the being can return to health and enlightening by connecting to a network that a scientist should find as effects of a drug or nothing less than a chemical reaction. She sees that "the network" is a faith that has a unity and possible afterlife. The movie uses Grace to explain faith from a non believer to show a faith that is fictional to us. Death does makes her look more delusional, but you can tell she dies as a believer of the Navi pantheon.

When this came out in theaters, I made sure to see it in two different ways for comparison. 1) With all the bells and whistles except 3D. 2) All the bells and whistles including IMAX 3D. In both cases, "Avatar" was stunningly beautiful eye candy. The 3D was more immersive as it was done in the proper way.
One of the complaints for "Avatar" was that the story was too similar to "Dances With Wolves" and not an original story. IMO, I'm not as concerned about predictability or originality. For me, it's more important if a movie is done right and if it can be a moving experience.

3D movies have been around (practically) forever. The first 3D movie, "The Power of Love" came out on September 27, 1922 and was shown at the Ambassador Hotel Theater in Los Angeles. Generally 3D movies require special glasses to be worn during viewing and those glasses have changed over the years, early on utilizing one blue lens and one red lens, and later utilizing polarized lenses. Viewing a 3D movie without the glasses results in a blurry image since two images are projected at slightly different angles, one seen with the right eye and the other seen with the left eye. Regardless of whether or not you watch the Avatar in 3D or in a more standard format, the visuals are stunning and the result of extensive and innovative CGI.

James Cameron is the master at pulling emotions from the audience. He grabs your guts and lets go only when he decides to, with the perfect timing. The movie came out a year we had a terribly harsh winter. Ultra cold temps, roads barred cause icy. I took shelter in the cinema and went to a better place for a few hours. When we all came out we were running on adrenaline and wonder. We didn't feel the cold or the seasonal depression anymore. Once in a lifetime experience, probably like the first Star Wars was for the previous generations. I don't go to theaters anymore but I will go watch the sequels in 3D in the best theater I can find.

The sleazeball Colonel whom you said you thought you recognized, is played by Stephen Lang who also played the sleazeball Ike Clanton in Tombstone (although it is hard to imagine you recognizing him under all that facial hair). I personally was shocked when i found this out.

This is hitting theaters again today, I highly recommend seeing it in 3D, it was THE definitive 3D movie and still is to this day. The movie itself is a take on several tired tropes, but it's so spectacular and enjoyable i can accept that part.

I saw it in 3d in the theater, and it was very pretty, great eye candy, but it did well for the same reason Titanic did. James Cameron knows exactly what his audience wants and he knows exactly how to give it to them. I enjoy his earlier movies more, The Abyss being my favorite, but I respect his mastery of the blockbuster format.

In 2d on a tv screen this is a good film. In 3d, on the big screen, it's an incredible movie experience. When my father saw it at the movies he said " it's not the best film I've seen but it's the best experience I've had at the movies."

Sam Worthington was really big for a couple years around the time when this came out. He was in Avatar, Terminator, and the 2 Clash of the Titans movies. He was one of those young actors hollywood execs thought would be big but he never really became the leading man, kind of like an Orlando Bloom. Now he is mostly just a character actor.

Avatar is a thinly veiled indictment of how "advanced" cultures treat indigenous people when they have valuable resources to steal. Throughout history people have taken advantage of "sub-humans" enslaving them and taking their lands. If we found life out in the cosmos, the question must be asked, would we try to subdue others and steal their resources with whatever justifications we could muster?

You can see Sam Worthington in "Hacksaw Ridge", his Australian accent peeks out here and there. I saw this movie in 3D in a Sony IMAX theater with a huge screen and thundering sound, it was amazing. This is one of a handful of movies I ever bought on DVD. I enjoyed your reaction!

there were plenty of 3D movies before Avatar, but this was the movie that reallllly took advantage of 3D technology and it was amazing. i saw it in regular 3D when it first was in theaters, then when the extended version was released, i saw it in IMAX 3D which only made it more amazing and just bigger. the beauty of the CGI is what i really love about this movie. 💙

yes the hair does do THAT. this scene is in at least one of the extended cuts.
The hometree scene is meant to evoke 9/11. Cameron's message being we (the world power) do 9/11 basically every day but in other parts of the world.

This was filmed with the latest 3D cameras. Now the cameras are used for educational iMax nature shorts.
Most modern films use a software only process.
Or may include limited scenes with full iMax cameras.

I think (personally) that it's not just the visuals (as great as they are), but the uniqueness of the story at the time. It really made you feel something, it wasn't just another space movie.
