Joker’s origins aren’t set in stone (The Dark Knight film was accurate in how his past changed from what he wants to tell people and may even believe from day to day). This is just one interpretation of what may have happened.

Every film adaptation of Batman has its own continuity, and this is no different. It’s not so much “this is what happened” as just taking the mythology of recognizable characters as a framework and using it to tell its own story.

    • @glennwelsh9784
      @glennwelsh9784 2 года назад +2

Yes. The comics and the characters have existed for decades, so their stories have been retold, reimagined, and reinterpreted numerous times. For that reason, there often isn't a single definitive version. The Joker depicted in this film is largely a new and different interpretation of the character, though it does cherry-pick details and elements from the comics.
The film is ultimately a story about a person's further descent into mental illness and an indictment of how society and its systems have chronically misunderstood, stigmatized, mistreated and failed those struggling with mental illness. It's just told through the prism of The Joker and Gotham City.

Right. There is no "true" Joker origin story in the comics. Even in The Killing Joke, he says something like "It may have happened that way. It may have not. Sometimes I remember it one way, sometimes another. If I have to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice."
Joker is the least reliable narrator to any story, especially his own. Now... would you like to know how I got these scars?

The thing that makes Joker such an interesting character is that every version that exists of him could be another side to the same person. Cesar Romero, Jack Nicholson, Mark Hamill, Heath Ledger, Joaquin Phoenix, they all show side of Joker, the mob boss, the anarchist, the mentally ill. Even in here, you see a version of the Joker that could be how he sees himself. But by his very nature, he is an unreliable narrator, some parts of his story could be a complete fabrication created just to make the viewer feel and think how he wants them to think. So how do you anticipate a move from a villain who is unreliable in essence. Anything is possible, and that's scary.

    • @zarquondam

Joker has never been an anarchist. An anarchist is someone who advocates an egalitarian, non-hierarchical society without domination, coercion, or exploitation, where all human relationships are based as far as possible on mutual consent.

If you listen to the director, he was trying to keep the mystery around the Jokers story by telling this complex story. In short the Joker always tells different versions of his origin. Even in the comics the various writers kept true to telling different stories. This all leads into his madness. The trick of this movie is you don't know what is real and what is in his mind.

The closest we’ve ever really got to an origin story is the one that’s in The Killing Joke.
That formed the basis for Jack Napiers transformation in Tim Burtons adaptation; as well as the idea that he was a failed comedian & was pushed over the edge by a string of events, which we see in this film.
I think the lack of any truly defined origin story; one that is out right considered cannon, is part of the mass appeal of the Joker as a character. There’s a bit of all of us in him….& like Batman, possesses no special superpowers.

I absolutely loved your reaction to the violent scenes. I've seen this movie 3 or 4 times and even though I know what's going to happen the say it's edited these scenes are still shocking to me today. It's a very depressing movie but it's one of my favorite movies of the last 10+ years.
I think my favorite scene is after the subway murders when he starts dancing in the bathroom. For me I really see that as Arthur being in a state of bliss. The shock of the violent acts he just committed play a part but I think it's mostly the joy at finally standing up for himself for the first time in his life. He's always been the victim but for the first time in his life he's refused to be the victim. Even if the act goes from justifiable self defense (at first) to absolute murder by the last victim he's crossed a point where, obviously for worse, he's decided to no longer be the victim.
The fact the film makers were able to write the story and film/edit it to have you feel sympathy for such a horrible violent person is really amazing. I was really hoping they wouldn't try to make a second Joker movie because you know it's going to be horrible. It made so much money that the big wigs in Hollywood are going to insist on being involved and they are talentless hacks. The last thing I want to see in this universe is Batman showing up.

It's important to remember that this isn't canon. This is vastly different than the jokers origin story in the comics but there are some clear similarities. This is a stand alone story that isn't meant to be part of the DCEU.
I dont remember which batman comic it was that had his origin but I believe it was the killing joke. In that he was like a failed standup comic. That's the main similarity but it also says that nobody knows if that story is even true. It's very ambiguous and I love that about the joker. He doesnt even know his true origin.
So basically everything about this story is unique to this version of the joker, even his name, Arthur. Although one thing I really liked was Thomas Wayne's reaction to him, punching him and telling him that if he came near his son again he would fucking kill him.
In one of the big DC storylines called flashpoint, the flash ends up in a different universe where everything is different. Bruce Wayne was killed as a kid in front of his parents and it made his parents go crazy. Thomas became Batman, except he kills criminals, and Martha becomes the joker.
The outburst Thomas has with Arthur just reminded me of that, normally Thomas is depicted as a christ like figure. So I cant help but think that this was a deliberate nod to that story.

I actually wish less people would try and make this canon in any sense. I see this film as commentary on how society treats people with mental illness and the overall disregard for mental health. The comic book references are just to make the subject matter accessible to general audiences but it seems most only want to attach to the comic book references.

Also, in the Batman comic, "The Killing Joke". Joker famously says, "I got this way after having ONE BAD DAY. All that is required for a hero to become a villain is ONE BAD DAY." Arthur went full Joker after ONE BAD DAY....

This film really jumps to another level when you think about it for a bit. Arthur is an unreliable narrator. Nothing you’re seeing should be taken as what’s actually happening (as with his relationship with his neighbor). Any time people are “just looking out for him” is probably a delusion. So Randal giving him the gun to protect himself probably didn’t happen. Arthur most likely stole it while imagining that Randal was his friend and gave it to him. Hence why Randal was so confused when Arthur mentioned it was his and why Randal came over to talk about it before getting murdered. The incident in the subway could have gone down exactly as it was described on the news with Arthur imagining a self defense scenario. The people striking in clown masks (all wearing the same ones as seen on Arthur’s make up stand… because they probably aren’t wearing them) are possibly upset about the garbage strike mentioned at the beginning of the film. Arthur is just imagining it’s about his situation. So the adoption, the murders, everything could all have happened like the paperwork and news suggested and Arthur was always the insane one. OR! Arthur was right, Thomas Wayne has the resources to cover up a bastard child. Maybe everything we saw was how it went down. Or only some of it. There is no real way to know lol. Love this film!

A part to notice is the "knock knock" joke he tells on the Murray Show. This is called an "anti-joke" and is a very real type of comedy that relies on stringing along the audience and denying them a punch line. A very key moment because he spent his whole life trying to write jokes and make people laugh and be happy. But now that he snapped, the anti-joke represents the entire 180 of his intentions.

This was an amazing movie. Seeing it in the theater was a very very high point of my movie going years. 🐾🐾🍻 It's also a very sad look at how someone can be driven, by circumstances out of his control, onto a very dark road.

I went to see this twice, first time I was so apprehensive, not because of the reviews but because I knew that the character needed to be done justice to after Heath Ledger's incredible portrayal....I saw it the second time because I couldn't digest it the first time, I was so blown away. I still to this day feel like the Joker resonates with every single one of us, whether we like to believe it or not....those two lines about everyone expecting you to act normal when you have a mental illness, and what do you get when you cross a mentally ill loner with a society that abandons him and treats him like trash....whether you are suffering from anxiety, depression, loneliness, stress.....we all feel that rage at times, of why don't people and society understand that we are not all cut out for a system that only benefits so few.....its now a movie I rarely go back to, because I can feel so much of that emotion inside me that it really can get under your skin a little too much for comfort.

This Joker origin is a different origin from the Dark Knight Joker's. There's some similarities but separate iterations. Great respective performances by Heath Leadger and Joaquin Phoenix playing the character in different ways.

This Joker wasn't connected to the Dark Knight trilogy. He's a different Joker. Just like Jack Nicholson is his own Joker with no ties to Christian Bale's Batman. Same with Jared Leto. All different Jokers. This one was obviously somewhat based on the Dark Knight considering the lack of acid vats but it's still completely his own thing.

I recall reading some trivia on the film a while ago that had something to do with the fact that the clocks in the film almost always tell the same time which yields an interpretation that the events of the film are playing out in his mind as he's in an insane asylum and narrating the story to give one possible origin story and is conflating it with his obsession with Bruce Wayne.

interpretation is open on this film but i think that pretty much anything that makes The Joker look good or defensible is imagined. His mom's note and confession, the random acts of violence by the kids and later by the business men, and obviously any and all interactions with his 'girlfriend.' All in his head. He probably saw them happen to other people or on TV. I wouldn't be surprised if in the 'reality' of this world that he had killed his mom before the movie even started. Thomas Wayne was a very good man who never cheated on his wife nor gaslight a woman he impregnated and The Joker is not Batman's brother, but he is insane and chaotic.

The worst part, is that Thomas Wane made this all happen. When he called the everyday people, "Clowns" he united them against himself, i.e. the rich & successful versus the poor. Thomas united them all under the joker clown symbol, so when they rise up behind Arthur and even kill him & his wife, Thomas is actually to blame for all of it. NO ONE ASKED THOMAS TO SAY ANYTHING ! He just did it to make a statement. He caused everything.

Mary Arthur was killing only killing those who'd wronged him in some way, He killed the three men on the subway obviously in self defense though he did take it a bit too far with the third guy. He killed his mother because she not only lied to him his whole life but also because she sat back while her boyfriend abused him, He killed Randell because obviously he got him fired from his job and was nothing but mean to him, and finally he killed Murray Franklin because he basically humiliated him. There was some speculation that he killed his neighbor Sophie but director Todd Phillips confirmed he DID NOT kill her Sophie didn't wrong him in any way so he didn't kill her
