I agree with you. Never put water into your iron. It will ruin it. How do I know. A good iron is an expensive investment. Purchase a spray bottle and save yourself a future headache.
Each machine is different, but I found one that has a very small stitch over into the sashing that is about a centimeter apart. It is very understated. Play around with some scraps to see which option your machine has looks best.
