- In depth guitar lesson for Tool's epic masterpiece Pushit. This lengthy track is in 6/4 and isn't to demanding from a technical standpoint, although the subtle variations and evolving form can make it difficult to absorb.

Man,you are a blessing. I think I speak for most tool fans who want to play Adam Jones, awesome guitar parts. You break it down so it makes sense,no guitar god attitude/ego, thank you so much
Thank you! Means a lot.
Yo man, I love your channel as it's been the main source for my tool lessons for quite a while. As you mentioned requests for the live salival version, I second that please! such an awesome track.
legniak1 I second that!!!
I love you man...
Do you know how many woman I've been able to pick up since you've taught me how to play some of my favourite Tool tracks of all time? Zero.
But, I'm loving knowing how to play these songs (properly-thanks to you) for the first time ever.

I guess I'm kind of off topic but do anyone know a good place to watch new tv shows online?
@Avery Kamden Lately I have been using Flixzone. You can find it on google =)
@Bradley Eddie Yea, I have been watching on flixzone for years myself =)
@Bradley Eddie thanks, I signed up and it seems like a nice service :) I appreciate it !!
You have to be the most proficient Adam Jones emulator I have ever seen. You are very skilled in your craft.
5 years late but check out opiateofthemasses channel
@@dutchmastah07 2 years late but that guy is legit im glad someone recognizes him
@@sun-dye9565 idk if he’s posted in a while but I used to study his videos back in the day lol
@@dutchmastah07 hell yea i watch his videos every now and then to help with learning songs
Learning to play Tool songs on drums and guitar is like listening to the tracks again for the first time.
6/8 has a different 'feel'. It's a compound meter, so it has two accented beats (1 and 4). Think two beats divided by 3. It sways, 123 456. 6/4 is more of a straight feel.
It's cool. If you like to play the 6th fret and make it sound good then awesome. I know we're bending the note (5th fret) so theoretically you could start on 6. Personally I don't like that sound. The dissonance you mention comes from bending the 5th fret into that sound, as least when I play it. Be careful, there are a lot of Tool fanboys who will crucify you because Jones plays it from the 5th fret. But not me, more power to you.
God tool has such incredible guitar parts, and u are an amazing guitarist for being able to play all of that. Good job
Can you play the third eye saliva version? That would be pretty sweet!
That subtle motif that you were talking about is my favorite part of the song thanks man this was a great lesson 👍👍
Great vid! I haven't read all of the comments - please pardon me if this has been mentioned - but at 21:10 when you go through (my favorite) bit, it comes back from the 12th fret to 6-6-9-6-7, I don't think that's correct. I've never played this song on the guitar personally, but it sounds like he's actually playing the 9th fret note on the higher string below in a chord; the same (and especially) when you do it the the fourth time on the lower strings. I can definitely hear the sustain of a chord and not moving between frets on the same string. I just thought that I'd mention it because it was the reason I looked for this video. Anyway, thanks! Great work!
how about intolerance with tool? have listened to tool for a couple of years but a lot of the songs on undertow seemed to have slipped me by haha
I can not tell you how much I appreciate all of your videos! So good!!! Any chance you can do ALL songs ever created? LOL
I swear I can almost play Tools entire discography thanks to this man. Guy is the the real mvp when it comes to Tool guitar lessons.
I'm kinda a beginner and you really helped me out with all of your lessons :D and as I am a huge Tool fan it was really fun to hear how it sounds when i play a Tool song :D but i only know Lateralus and mostly The Pot :D Learning this one now ! Keep it up m8
love your work mate, cheers from new zealand!
please do reflection! and triad, tool's greatest combo imo
Are there any videos of you playing in a live concert? Would love to see your performances.
This might have been the first TooL song I leaned by ear. Nice to know I was really close if not spot on for most of it.
Awesome. I'm loving playing this song. The play through link says the page doesn't exist anymore. Is there still a way to find your playthrough videos?
I really like the way you teach AJ’s parts and technique. You routinely say “however you see fit,” which is really about feel, which is really key to how he plays. Getting dogmatic about most of Tool’s music will ruin the feel and effect. Pushit breathes. Thank you for doing this-really enjoyed it.
this is fucking thee best tutorial man you are so on point with this im trying to learn an acoustic version where it i guess you can say is alot slower um not sure if i can still incorporate these chords and such but idk now i just wanna go buy and electric guitar lol
You are, by far my friend, THE closest that I’ve heard to Adam Jones playing style. Ever!! And I’ve been a tool fan literally since they came out. Excellent job sir!
Hey dude. Can I make a suggestion for the next lesson? Ticks and Leeches. I've been listening to it a lot lately. It's got some fucking killer riffs. You can literally feel Adam's guitar playing slap you in the face. And I love the anger in the song. I don't think you've done a lesson on it yet? Just some food for thought. You've got the best Tool lessons on RUclips, by far. Props.
Please! Third eye guitar lesson!!! Amazing guitar parts and you break it down in an excelent way!
Yes! Another amazing masterpiece from Tool. Every Tool song (mainly from Ænima is a masterpiece imo)
What bout the Pushit Salival version lol
@ 11:22 it's the bass that's doing that
Yep
Yea.. think you mean Justin though.. The bass is just takin orders... lol Its such a TOOL... lol
Thanks so much! Hope you told them where you saw the Dead Horse! I have a great relationship with them. Good people. Great pedals.
I have and it sounded great. Very honest (because that's how monitors)
I left you a thumbs up. But I really would’ve liked something more in depth. The feel of this song is not in the riffing entirety, but so much in the effects and tone variations.
Experimenting with sound like you put it is a shortcut I’ve heard to many times.
I'm trying to learn salival version..only problem is I'm a seasoned drummer a.d not a guitar player.. But God Dang it,
I'm gonna get it? Itd be much easier for me to play an electric instead of an acoustic.. But
The extra effort i have to put into learning on the acoustic,, will help me in the end.. the hard part for me is the 5th fret 2nrd fret stretch.. my fingers are too short.
I'm getting it tho
Thanks for the help buddy.
Ya mark, wish I could take some private lessons with you. You live in or near Portland? Rofl, ya bro my favorite song was Lateralus..it definitely can lose luster
Oh shit, I started at Fear Inoculum on your channel, and then I time traveled back to this video lol.
10 years ago , damn thanks for teaching me every tool song ever 😂😂😂🤘🏻
Sus2. Step above the Root.
Un gamín para tocar todo lo de Tool(como decimos algunos colombianos)
Appreciate you going through these songs. I don't have the patience to show people how to play anything. I mean after taking the time figuring songs out I declare victory and hate the song for at least 6 months or more. LOL
The most satisfying song I ever figured out was Under The Bridge by the RHCP and it took me a lot of rewinding the cassette tape to get down and when I did I celebrated like a MMA fighter; which scared the shit out of my toddler niece.
RUclips would have saved me a ton of time, but I still like to frustrate myself from time to time by listening to a song over and over again.
VGS guitar, never heard of it but it sounds good. What is the black band thing around the nut/first fret, a capo or something??? What happened to the Agile? You mentioned in the lesson listening to the song with headphones, I'm searching for a good set of headphones for my amp. Can you recommend any that are particularly good for maintaining a clean tone when plugged into an amp at high volume with heavily distorted guitar? All the ones I test out either buzz alot or give alot of feedback. Cheers dude, and another top notch TOOL lesson.
Thank you so much for making these.
I bend the 5th up pretty high, but then I proceed to bend the 7th after it just a bit. Adds to that dissonance for me. Great lesson by the way, Tool's one of my favorite bands, and these videos are interesting to watch, despite knowing how to play the songs already. You sir have gained a new sub.
Love your videos bro. How bout a You Lied video. Can't find a lesson anywhere
Thanks for this I almost had fun learning it. What type of delay setting should i have?
jesus dude...you turn the nobs lmao
Ever tried this riff on the neck pick up with the tone rolled almost off + distortion? The resonance of the bent G plus A really comes through all wobbly like
Could you please do a short video to add on to this one to show us the missing riffs from the Salival version of the song. Specifically starting at the 7:00 min mark of that version. When it gets to those new riffs i just cant follow it and no where on the internet do i see anyone playing pushit Salival the full length through. Must be impossible lol but please do this please please please
Thanks so much for all of your great videos. Your channel is hands down the best for Tool songs. Keep it up!
Lovin' that pro-tone T-shirt too. Dead Horse Overdrive made me throw my old "****" out the window ;) Hope they giving you something for that, if not, they should cuz your worth it.
Adamstown for the song is very odd and I have his normal tone mostly down but I cannot figure this one out
Please show us how to play Rosetta Stone!
I always liked playing the opening riffs with a bit less open A strings and the tone cranked down a bit
Hey, it's Zach Braff from Scrubs. Say something funny.
Fantastic dude, I predicted this would be the next one you did! I was wondering, have u tried the pod HD directly into the KRK rokits and if so, how did they sound, I'm considering using active monitors myself.
Thank you so much Greg once again for filling me in on how to play another song from my favorite band! I'm self-taught and learn mostly from watching videos & i'm still getting down the time signatures but i listen to tool so much i do it naturally without thinking. Your explanations are completely understandable, wherein since its Tool your teaching, this makes things so easy to learn. Watching you play and playing along literally is all i need to learn. Thank you so much for your time!
I have to say that it's not quit correct how you play that song, but still it sound good.
I know this is an old video , but I have been watching you for years now and your great. Now we just need a new tool album they have been talking about. And one last thing , you should check out the band karnivool. You may like them. Thanks man. Have a good one
Karnivool is GREAT! I can't wait for new Tool...means new lessons!
Will you ever be doing Swamp Song?
Show us how to play a perfect Circle outsider
Hey man just wanted to say that your awesome ! Your a great guitarist and I appreciate you taking the time on all this. Thanks man one love
applauding (you just cant see it). greg which sus chords are they sus2s or 4s? i think they're 2s right?
Think ya could do a video for Pushit off of Salival?
Hey awesome lesson. Think you could make a video for "The Patient"? Would help out a lot.
it d be really helpful if you could do the parabola lesson, and great lesson btw
moving onto this one now.... thanks for your work bro
Awesome thanks. Was with you until the end of the outro. didn't sound true to the Salival version. Good job...
Well, we weren't going over the Salival version.
One of the first songs I learned, such a fun one to play
4:00
I gotta get me one of those guitars.....that sounds incredible. Great play!!!
lol sounds like i should start with another song as a beginner i can't even comprehend this hahaha
Tool is pretty easy to play, it's never really that technical. You just need to learn your time signatures more than anything else.
btw dude in around 4 hrs my vicarious cover will be up :)
whoa dude, youre hella thorough i like it
I already know this is brilliant. Thanks in advance. :D
anyone else notice he missed a riff? i actually noticed mostly because i learned it on accident realizing it sounded much like the riff he skipped. i was hoping hed go over it to maybe get a better idea of how to play it or if i actually play it correctly. so im thinking its not adams guitar but Chancellor's bass. either way it can be transfered because i did so if so.
its bass a bass riff.
Not sure which riff/section you're talking about....but are you referring to the breakdown part, after the 2nd chorus, where the guitar plays the main intro riff(with that 10/9 pull-off) while the bass underneath is going A - Ab - F - G? Or are you referring to the quiet/subtle breakdown/bridge where both the guitar and bass (and samples) play all sorts of interesting ideas? Either way...your comment gives credit to how brilliant this song really is. Think about it...while this video is fucking killer...it has nothing to do with the bass, or drums, or vocals, or samples/sound effects, or the production or mixing or mastering....or the actual _performance_ itself...or the timbre and tonality of every part of every instrument...or the arrangement...or the goddamn songwriting itself that even lead to the creation of this piece of music. And it's just one song...on one album.
It's yet another reason why, despite having a pretty eclectic and diverse musical interest...I always gravitate to Tool, not for any one reason...but because every fucking aspect of what they do...is perfect. The 4(and 5 counting Paul) of them, plus their partners in recording, somehow are able to create sonic and creative masterpieces. It's a beautiful thing to be privileged to hear. Tool really help remind me of why music is so fascinating. I love music theory...and learn all that I can...but, at the end of the day, the ONLY thing that matters is _how it sounds to human ears/minds._ All the stuff that leads up to that is fascinating...but what's especially interesting and utterly mysterious is the creative act itself...making something utterly novel. Tool excel at that...and it's why I've spent hundreds of hours pondering how they created what they did....in order to learn and apply it to my own work.
Anyway...I just realized my comment is absurdly long and rambling. I admit, I finally acquired some very nice greenery after being out for some time...and I'm definitely "in the zone." So...over and out, gonna go play some guitar for a good 2 hours. Good night fellow humans. Shit, I am high. o_O
Hey, can you do Right in Two? That would be great!
Awesome lesson you should do Stinkfist next ? :P
Excellent lesson! Thanks Greg. Perfect as always
There's no love in FEAR!
What's that thing with the checkmark above the first fret?
+RosettaStoned525 This was a long time ago, but if you still haven't found your answer, that thing is kinda like a wristband and it helps suppress excess string noise. as it can be an issue with distorted/heavy playing.
great song yeaa
great, i love your tool lessons. thanks
You are the Chael Sonnen of guitar!
Great tutorial! Could you do Triad?
Another bang up job bro!
Amazing as always.
yes bro
Did you remove your playthroughs and tabs?
They should still be up but I've moved TABs to my Patreon.
Oh okay, thanks!
Line 6...ugh.
But it sounds good for the application so...
Variations wise Push It is the 7empest of Ænima
Could you explain why it's 6/4 not 6/8? Awesome lesson btw
