The final song on his final album. I’m so thankful that I got to see John one last time on his final tour. He encored with this song, then “Paradise”, then literally danced offstage. Dude knew how to take a bow. God rest him. Thanks, guys.
another vote for "Hello In There" but you really cannot go wrong with John Prine. My husband went to the same high school, many years later. And John was his grandma's mailman until John was able to do music fulltime.
As others have commented, the John Prine rabbit hole is deep and rich with musical treasures. I would add to others' song lists "Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Anymore." We sure do miss John!
I LOVE John Prine! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Every song is good! John had throat cancer and his voice became a lot more gravelly. Listen to Dear Abby, Paradise (my favorite), In Spite of Ourselves and Hello In There. And Summer’s End has a video. So sad. And I Remember Everything and another favorite of mine, Grandpa Was a Carpenter, Illegal Smile, Please Don’t Bury Me is so funny!!
When I.was a kid, John Prine's "Ain't Hurtin' Nobody" and "Paradise' still got a ton of radio play in my town, probably because the local DJ was a huge Prine fan. The result was just about our entire town became Prine fans.
Here’s my list all by John Prine 1. "I Ain't Living Long Like This" (1978) 2. "Angel from Montgomery" (1971) 3. "You Never Even Called Me by My Name" (1972) 4. "Hello in There" (1971) 5. "Sam Stone" (1971) 6. "Paradise" (1971) 7. "Lake Marie" (1995) 8. "The Bottom Line" (1983) 9. "Spanish Pipedream" (1971) 10. "Illegal Smile" (1971) 11. "Your Flag Decal Won't Get You into Heaven Anymore" (1972)
Great song!!! That was on his last album. Any songs by John Prine are a good choice. You need more John Prine!! Check out "Jesus The Missing Years", "Grandpa Was A Carpenter" or "Illegal Smile"
Iv'e listened to Prine for over 50 years and believe me he is a treasure and has so many great songs. He is Bob Dylans favorite songwriter . You should try "In Spite of Ourselves" as many have suggested you'll have a real laugh at how honest and insightful it is.
I don't think I've heard a John Prine song I don't love. He has some songs that make you cry, some that make you laugh, and some that do both from one line to the next. Just one of the best.
Love the reaction. I didn't think Amber's mouth would ever be able to close again, but she just started groovin' again when the chorus came around. You guys have seen two sides of John Prine and they are sometimes both in a single song. What a storyteller. Check out Hello In There. It still really gets to me. There is a video that someone made which really brings it home that is a slideshow with the lyrics. Angel From Montgomery and Dear Abby are two other favorites along with Sam Stone which you already did. Bonnie Raitt did a great cover of Angel From Montgomery and there is also a video of them playing a duet. Dear Abby is a funny one for when you need a laugh and a smile. Hope to see more John Prine here. You have just scratched the surface.
My college roommate introduced me to John Prine's music in '80 or thereabouts. It wasn't the kind of music I would normally listen to but I surprisingly enjoyed it. He was a national treasure and he left a big hole when he passed away.
John Prine was a treasure. Listen to "Hello in There", "You Never Even Call Me By My Name", and his final song, "I Remember Everything". Also his duet with Iris DeMent, "In Spite of Ourselves".
If you love John Prine you should try his younger friend and somewhat successor Jason Isbell. Many say he’s the best songwriter since Bob Dylan or John Prine. Jason Isbell: “If We Were Vampires” “Cover Me Up” “King of Oklahoma”
I dearly love John Prine. 1. Bob Dylan’s favorite John Prine song is Lake Marie. It’s incredible! 2. Summer’s End 3. Paradise-about a small town in KY along the Green River that was leveled for a TVA coal plant. Some of John Prine’s ashes were released on the Green River, just like he longs for in the song.
I love John Prine. He and the late, great Steve Goodman, were pure gold together - both together and apart. I’ve always loved John’s song, “Let’s Talk Dirty in Hawaiian”. That would be a great song for you guys to react to.
Paradise is the best! But my first introduction to John Prine was a song called Grandpa Was a Carpenter!! He built house stores and banks. Chain Smoked Camel Cigarettes and hammered nails in planks. He was level on the level, shaved even every door, and voted for Eisenhower because Lincoln won the war. Its memorable because i was in South Korea in the Air Force Christmas of 84. My mom set up a cassette recorder and just let it run while the family celebrated Christmas together. At some point my Cousin Pat got out his Martin Guitar and played and sang Grandpa was a Carpenter. Funny, Grandpa on that side of the family was a Farmer. Grandpa on the other side of the family actually was a Carpenter. But she sent the tape to me so i could feel like i was at home instead of across the pacific. I never told her it made me even more lonely.
Please include Iris Dement in your lists. Remarkably different voice and insightful writer but she has dueted with many singers. Try her "Our Town" with Emmy Lou Harris. She wrote it as the final song for the TV series "Northern Exposure", she also sang the theme song ending "True Grit".
Back for another comment! After watching this video, I gotta point out a fact. There’s tons of older artists that still tour and kick ass. They’re doing what they’ve been known for, the old stuff that still rocks. John Prine did that also, but he put out new, relevant, amazing music until the day he died. There’s very few artists that can be said about. There’s never been a songwriter of his caliber IMO.
He’s much older, nearing the end. After his throat cancer, he had to sing a lot lower. John Prine was and is an American treasure. I loved him from the time of his first album. He had another song when he was young about the afterlife called “Whistle and Go Fishing in Heaven.” That’s another good one,but you can’t go wrong with John Prine.
Love, love, love. In Spite of Ourselves, Lets Talk Dirty in Hawaiian. He influenced so many artists. Like so many have any song just about. Love you guys, thanks for the smile.
John Prine was a true poet. His songs can touch your heart and bring tears to your eyes or make you smile, laugh, and toe tap like this one did. From his earlier songs like Hello In There or Donald and Lydia to his very last song I Remember Everything written shortly before we lost him to Covid, John left a treasure trove of uniquely American music. I saw him live in the mid-80s - best concert of my life. Please keep exploring John’s works…you will never regret it. 💖
John’s catalogue is very varied…he cannot be pidgeon holed. He was a songwriting genius. Check out Paradise, Lake Marie (live), Hello in There and That’s the Way the World Goes Round. By then, you’ll have a good idea what of what he was all about……a national treasure!
How can ANYONE listen to John Prine and NOT LOVE IT!!??? He's just AWESOME! One that you might check out: In Spite Of Ourselves - a duet he did with Iris DeMent....I just love the way he incorporates humor into his songs, but they're SO ENJOYABLE!!! RIP, JOHN!!!
John is one of my favorite artists of all time. Blessed to have seen him several times live when I was in college and several times after I got married and introduced my wife to him and she became a huge fan. At some point listen to Paradise which is my personal favorite, but his catalog is enormous and most people don’t realize the impact he has had on artists across almost all music genres.
Glad you enjoyed this tune by one of the greatest story tellers of all time. It is pretty ironic that you have now done two John Prine songs that turn out to be his first and last songs recorded. John was taken from us way too early by Covid. He is missed dearly.
John Prine is a Chicago gem. He’s an amazing storyteller. I can’t name a favorite song because I keep discovering mor but I love Angel from Montgomery and Bruised Orange(chain of sorrow). This was a true story. John would shovel the church steps in a Chicago neighborhood and is remembering an alter boy who had been hit by a metra train. He remembered all of the mothers gathered around waiting to find out if the boy was their son.
John Prine was my mother's favorite. And when she was dying from cancer, we would play his songs for her all day. I remember dancing around to them when I was a kid too. "Fish and Whistle", "Please Don't Bury Me" and "Dear Abby" - plus so many more!
I've watched this video so many times, and the smiles on your faces is as much a treasure as John himself. I can't help but smile with you every time I watch. Thanks for the grins guys! ♥ I'll second the thoughts of @whitpatrick, @bartstarr, @kdogusna, @clg, @kelly, @joeroche, and oh so many more! This guy is a national musical treasure. He's a treasure for his friends, fans, and fellow musicians as well. Highly honored and respected, and a songwriter's songwriter. Not too bad for an army vet mail carrier. Rolling Stone called him the Mark Twain of American songwriting. I can hardly wait to see what your next listen will be. 😉 ♥
His "That's How Every Empire Falls" is a most powerful message in a song. John Prine was a beloved treasure, but sadly was one of the very earliest victims of covid. He created some great songs.
Prine had many friends and family in the studio when he recorded this song. On Kazoo's and yodeling is Brandi Carlile and Amanda Shires. The child's giggles were provided by his grandson.
I first saw John Prine over 50 years ago in a bar in Chicago. I’ve seen him perform many times since. Unfortunately we list him to COVID a couple years ago. Miss him.
i cry with joy everytime i hear this song...john prine is sorely missed...another singer/songwriter you may enjoy is j j cale who wrote many a great song including cocaine, after midnight (both covered by eric clapton), call me the breeze (covered by lynyrd skynyrd) and my favorite, crazy mama...keep on keeping on
Great stuff, I love John Prine! He sounds older in this one because this song was from his last album "The Tree of Forgiveness" before he passed away. I'd love it if you did more of his songs, he was a songwriting genius!
Do “In Spite of Ourselves” duet John Prine and Iris DeMent. You’ll love it for the real Couple’s Humor!
They HAVE to hear Iris’s voice!
Came here to say the exact same thing! Never much of a country/folk guy myself but always loved Prine
Absolutely need to listen
Yes! That’s one of the best novelty songs!❤️
yes, please!
The final song on his final album.
I’m so thankful that I got to see John one last time on his final tour. He encored with this song, then “Paradise”, then literally danced offstage. Dude knew how to take a bow. God rest him.
Thanks, guys.
"Crazy As a loon" "Illegal Smile" "Dear Abby" The dude was a genius.
As suggested, "Jesus, The Missing Years" is not to be missed. My heart smiles with John Prine. 💜💜💜
Lol the missing years? That would be all of them.
another vote for "Hello In There" but you really cannot go wrong with John Prine.
I can’t believe I forgot that one!
@@KimSimful and "Boundless Love" from the Tree of Forgiveness album.
Oh heck yeah! So many of his are funny.
You need to do John Prine and Iris DeMent singing In Spite Of Ourselves
John Prine is a treasure.
John Prine is the GOAT of song writing, need to do more 😎
John Prine is a rabbit hole, for sure. Try his Illegal Smile. One of my all-time favorites!
-so kool- !
Sam Stone, Aw Heck, Whistle and Fish
Paradise is my favorite John Prine song as well.
"Every song is good!" - I couldn't agree more! ♥
"Hello In There" is one of my favorites. John Prine can make me laugh and make me cry. This one touches my heart.
John Prine is the most admired of singer/songwriters by singers/and song writing
John is at least as good a songwriter as anyone you ever heard of .... Nobody is BETTER..... You need to react to his song "Hello in there ..."
One of my absolute favorites. That and Some people aren’t people
I have always argued that he and Tom Waits are the two most underrated songwriters of the last 50 years.
Guy Clark .
John Prine was simply amazing. Down home songs and humor. Love his music !!
You might want to check John Prine's song, Angel from Montgomery, more of a ballad. Bonnie Raitt does a good version of that as well.
And the duet between John and Bonnie is wonderful!
Souvenirs my favorite
Leave it to John Prine to have you laughing and crying at the same time 🎵🎶
When I.was a kid, John Prine's "Ain't Hurtin' Nobody" and "Paradise' still got a ton of radio play in my town, probably because the local DJ was a huge Prine fan. The result was just about our entire town became Prine fans.
John Prine - Hello in there …….simply the best and a must!
Prine said Hello In There was "my favorite song I ever wrote." It was about people in a convalescent home he used to deliver mail to.

Dear Abby

Fish and Whistle!
As to his voice on later albums; he had cancer squamos cell cancer in his neck, which required surgery that damaged his throat and vocal cords.
John Prine and Iris Dement. "In Spite of Ourselves"" live. You can find it. It must be live.
It must be live. I would give you the link, but you always ignore it......
Thank yall for the share! One of America’s greatest singer-songwriters ever… ❤
Great song!!! That was on his last album. Any songs by John Prine are a good choice. You need more John Prine!! Check out "Jesus The Missing Years", "Grandpa Was A Carpenter" or "Illegal Smile"
Love the song Illegal Smile )
Paradise is a definite “must listen”!

My favorite song writer. Thank you.
You have to realize that there is 50 years between the two Prine songs you've done. You'd love Hello In There and so many more.
A great song about heaven from someone who is definitely there.
My college roommate introduced me to John Prine's music in '80 or thereabouts. It wasn't the kind of music I would normally listen to but I surprisingly enjoyed it. He was a national treasure and he left a big hole when he passed away.

2. Summer’s End
3. Paradise-about a small town in KY along the Green River that was leveled for a TVA coal plant. Some of John Prine’s ashes were released on the Green River, just like he longs for in the song.
My favorite John Prine song is "Please Don't Bury Me". It's a strange one, then again, so was John.
John Prine wrote Angel from Montgomery one of the best and Bonnie Raits version is simply great.
I love John Prine. He and the late, great Steve Goodman, were pure gold together - both together and apart. I’ve always loved John’s song, “Let’s Talk Dirty in Hawaiian”. That would be a great song for you guys to react to.

RIP to this American treasure!
If you two had a cantankerous grandpa in the family you definitely should do "Grandpa Was A Carpenter" from John, 1973
Please include Iris Dement in your lists. Remarkably different voice and insightful writer but she has dueted with many singers. Try her "Our Town" with Emmy Lou Harris. She wrote it as the final song for the TV series "Northern Exposure", she also sang the theme song ending "True Grit".
He's drinkin' and smokin' now.
America's finest song writer...ever. IMO
One of the greatest songwriters ever. Ever.
John Prine did it all. Laughter, tears, and everything else. We’ll listen to you again one day Mr Prine 🙏

John Prine musts are “Illegal Smile”, “Angel From Montgomery”, and “Speed of the Sound of Loneliness”
Love, love, love. In Spite of Ourselves, Lets Talk Dirty in Hawaiian. He influenced so many artists. Like so many have any song just about. Love you guys, thanks for the smile.
Try his In Spite of Himself w/ Iris Dement, live version

John Prine is one of the great songwriters and performers ever. So is John Hiatt - Have A Little Faith In Me.
I love the message of the song-to him, Heaven is what he already had here.
John’s catalogue is very varied…he cannot be pidgeon holed. He was a songwriting genius. Check out Paradise, Lake Marie (live), Hello in There and That’s the Way the World Goes Round. By then, you’ll have a good idea what of what he was all about……a national treasure!

John Prine died of covid in 2020....I hope he's having fun in heaven just like he imagined it
This world is colder without John in it. Miss that guy like air.
John prine is one of my favorite artist!!
Seen them both once together both great songwriters and great friends. Phenomenal shows.
John is one of my favorite artists of all time. Blessed to have seen him several times live when I was in college and several times after I got married and introduced my wife to him and she became a huge fan. "Big old goofy world" is one of my favourite Prine songs.
Love John prine ❤❤❤
Glad you enjoyed this tune by one of the greatest story tellers of all time. It is pretty ironic that you have now done two John Prine songs that turn out to be his first and last songs recorded. John was taken from us way too early by Covid. He is missed dearly.
Thanks guys for respecting a definite master!
The songwriters songwriter 👍🏻🎸🇨🇦
It was sad to lose one of America's best singer, songwriters. R.I.P. John.
I love your reaction it's as genuine as mine was for every first time hearing a New song from him over 40 years of listening to him
I saw John live many times. It was always like you were sitting on the front porch with your best friend.
He was a total jewel!
RIP
John Prine is a Chicago gem. He’s an amazing storyteller. I can’t name a favorite song because I keep discovering mor but I love Angel from Montgomery and Bruised Orange(chain of sorrow). This was a true story. John would shovel the church steps in a Chicago neighborhood and is remembering an alter boy who had been hit by a metra train. Thanks, such fun. Anything from the Prime Prine album would be great. I'd suggest Dear Abby, Please don't Bury Me, and Donald and Lydia.
I got to see him at the Paramount in Austin. He was a gift to the world.
John Prine was my mother's favorite. And when she was dying from cancer, we would play his songs for her all day. I remember dancing around to them when I was a kid too. "Fish and Whistle", "Please Don't Bury Me" and "Dear Abby" - plus so many more!
John Prine is amazing from Angel from Montgomery to Dear Abbey you can't go wrong. I would recommend Paradise for the next Prine song!
Another vote for "In Spite of Ourselves" by John! 😊
Please Don’t Bury Me, Dear Abbey, and Christmas In Prison are 3 of his songs that you guys should check out! I’m sure you’ll love them all
Voice sounds deeper and rougher because this from late in his career after having survived throat cancer and having half a lung removed.
John Prine was a national treasure.
I Remember Everything was one of the last songs he recorded. It’s a great song
Love John Prine!
Love, love, love John Prine! 🙂
You would have made John smile and you brought a tear too my eye.
His "That's How Every Empire Falls" is a most powerful message in a song. John Prine was a beloved treasure, but sadly was one of the very earliest victims of covid. He created some great songs.
Well said my friend, well said
Prine had many friends and family in the studio when he recorded this song. On Kazoo's and yodeling is Brandi Carlile and Amanda Shires. The child's giggles were provided by his grandson.
Mr prine was a most prolific song writer/performer. He is sorely missed🤘❤️
Jay, you wanted to hear a HARP, that is the instrument being played at the VERY beginning of this song.
I first saw John Prine over 50 years ago in a bar in Chicago. I’ve seen him perform many times since. Unfortunately we list him to COVID a couple years ago. Miss him.
Love this song cant get it out of my.head
John Prine lyrics will never disappoint you!
I listen John every day. He is good for the soul.
John Prine is an American treasure.
Talk about a rabbit hole! There are too many greats to mention, but "Clay Pigeons", "Long Monday" and "Come on Home" are MUSTS
i cry with joy everytime i hear this song...john prine is sorely missed...another singer/songwriter you may enjoy is j j cale who wrote many a great song including cocaine, after midnight (both covered by eric clapton), call me the breeze (covered by lynyrd skynyrd) and my favorite, crazy mama...keep on keeping on
John is truly missed. JJ Cale has some great stuff. Good suggestions. Start with Crazy Mama.
You’ve got to hear his song Paradise.
Please react to "Hello in There"
Great song...❤️
My 1st time hearing this & it just made me laugh out loud! I loved Amber’s chair dance at each chorus! So much fun!
Great stuff, I love John Prine! He sounds older in this one because this song was from his last album "The Tree of Forgiveness" before he passed away. I'd love it if you did more of his songs, he was a songwriting genius!
John Prine is a great one.
