Harri, John was a great songwriter and a wonderful human being. His catalogue is deep and you would do well to react to more of his magic !!!!. Try: Blue Umbrella or Lake Marie .....
John was a brilliant songwriter. His serious tunes can be heart-breakingly beautiful and tragic. "Sam Stone" is as perfect an example of this as you can find, a true song for the ages.
John Prine songs make me laugh or cry or think deeply. He was one of the greatest songwriters of our lifetimes. Thank you for this great video. Have a great day everyone!
John Prine is one of the best musician/songwriters ever. Definitely check out more from him. He's got fun ones like this one, beautiful ones, sad ones, and everything in between. He writes in a way that is simple enough to sing along with and understand and still can convey a lot of emotion

John was special. Wonderful storyteller who could bring smiles and laughs or choke you up with tears. Before making it in music he was a mailman in suburban Chicagoland after serving in the military.
Oh dear ! You really need to jump in on this amazing Man ! You won’t regret it and you’ll never forget Him . He’s been an inspiration to me for 50 years . You should follow this with when I get to Heaven .
Life would have been less sweet without him. And the night he died the grief on social media was so thick. So many songs to rec, but might as well listen to the entire debut and then Bruised Orange..

Prine is an inspiration. I suggested that " Donate Life" use it as their National Anthem...and sang it to the a-capella at the NYS Fair at their donation booth. I was on a crusade...and when I am one one, I pull out all the stops.
Bob Dylan considered John prine one of his top six song writer's of all time. Coming from the greatest song writer that says a lot . I never really knew about John prine until his passing, but now am a huge fan . Thanks Hari !! Great stuff ✌️🎶
Same here, I hadn't heard of John until he became one of the first people to die of Covid 19 back in 2020... since then I've come to love (and miss) him.
John Prine’s music is the best example of Americana I can come up with. Storytelling at its best, he could literally make you cry with songs like Sam Stone and Hello In There and then laugh your ass off with tracks like Let’s Talk Dirty In Hawaiian and Dear Abbey ✨never forgotten
I’m surprised to find out that this is your first John Prine reaction. This guy is an amazing lyricist and songwriter. His lyrics can be funny, surprising, oddly absurd and deeply heartbreaking. I don’t think it’s going to far to say he’s a kind of genius and a poet.
This man was the ultimate songwriter \and when he passed the world lost such an awesome talent! I guarentee you anyone who ever seen him perform came away a fan for life! He left a wonderful catalog and if you don't think he was popular just ask anyone who performed with him. RIP John! You will be missed!
John Prine's music catalog is enormous. I would take years to discover is brilliance and musicianship. A poet for sure. He coves everything in life and beyond.
John prine Will be in a list of the greatest songwriters to ever live there's so many songs with a sense of humor some of the simplistic joy some to make you think he's unique and wonderful songwriter.
How a guy can satire himself and country music, yet still end up with such dang good song, over and over and over? I don't know but I am sure glad he did.
John can make make you laugh on one song and cry the next. Dear Abby and Grandpa was a carpenter for fun and Hello in there and Paradise for a sad one.
He is one of the greats of my lifetime. Prine, Dylan and Simon were .masters of fun and pathos . A d Dylan loved prine. I love John Prine! He was an amazing songwriter and an incredible guitarist. Some of his best most famous songs are Angel from Montgomery, Paradise, Sam Stone, and one of my favorites Dear Abby. But the first time i ever heard him was a song called Grandpa Was a Carpenter. His music could be classified as American Folk, country if you stretch the wrapper very thin. Angel from Montgomery was a big song for Bonnie Raitt. There have been a few who recorded Paradise but i only ever heard him do Dear Abby.
One of my favorite artists. Saw him multiple times. Fantastic songwriter. Very poignant and occasionally quite funny. Keep listening to him. You will find quite a few gems.
"Angel from Montgomery" "Hello in There" "Sam Stone" "Paradise" "Your Flag decal won't get you into heaven anymore" You are in for a treat. John Prine was an American treasure.
An amazing songwriter that to me was the everymans man. His sense of humor and the way he engaged audiences live always blew me away. Thankfully I got to see him a year or so before he checked out but he still had it. Probably saw him 7or8 times in total but I always walked out of his shows with a smile and feeling great...if you listen to his song Paradise it will give you a huge window into the soul of JP.
He was a warm funny man, always looking at the human condition with a sideways quirky smile. He could be sarcastic, but was never mean, and he could come up with the most amazing lyrics. Example - "Whiskey and pain/Both taste the same/During the time they go down," but there are so many other phrases he could turn that would stop you in your tracks. Saw him live about a half dozen times. Always a great heartwarming show.
John Prine was an amazing song writer, but he was also a very kind and humble man. He had a unique take on the human condition and wrote about what he saw in people's hearts and lives. Very few like him and he is sorely missed. Thank-you Hari, I don't think I've seen any other reactors do JP. Love the whole Sweet Revenge album, among others.
It's been said that at its heart, country music is 'three chords and the truth', and no musician embodies that more than John Prine. His songs can be catchy and funny like this one, or the purest expression of pain you've ever heard. For positive songs, I'd recommend "That's The Way The World Goes 'Round", "Other Side Of Town", or "Dear Abby" - for a more sentimental selection, either "Christmas In Prison", "Sam Stone", or "Far From Me".
'Paradise' is one of John's best known songs. It's about the destruction of the environment by mining. He sings about the Green River, part of John's ashes were scattered in the Green River. "Hello in There" is about the loneliness of old age. "Angel From Montgomery' is about finding the meaning of life. John, a brilliant songwriter, he can make you laugh, cry or both at the same time. I recommend you check out more Prine, you won't be disappointed.
As someone who loves music and storytelling, you owe it to yourself and your followers to react to more of John Prine, who was arguably America's greatest songwriter, in part because his deep compassion could allow him to imagine life through the eyes of others. Among his best of hundreds: * Hello in There (written in his 20s when he worked in a nursing home, one of the most profound songs ever about getting old) * Angel from Montgomery (written from the perspective of a neglected, middle-aged wife) * Sam Stone (story of a veteran returning from war) * Donald and Lydia (story of two lonely, socially awkward young people seeking love) * Sweet Revenge (His first look back at the surprising success of his first two albums) * Lets Talk Dirty in Hawaiian (light-hearted, fun, love)
@@debjorgo His second album charted 148th in the Billboard top 200 and the main criticism at the time was that it wasn't quite as brilliant as his debut album. His third album, Sweet Revenge, features as its cover image John in the car he bought with the earning from his first two albums. So while its true Diamonds in the Rough didn't receive the acclaim of his self-titles debut album, it charted about as well as his next five albums and better than the seven after those.
@@jonsher7682 I'm just quoting wiki on the Sweet Revenge song. The quote is on the page for the Sweet Revenge album. I loved the Prime Prine Greatest Hits album and listened to it for a long time, Sweet Revenge always being a favorite. I've since picked up the first album, Sweet Revenge and the Great Days Prine Anthology album. I remember reading somewhere that the lines from Sweet Revenge "Through rock and through stone, the black wind still moans" had to do with the railroad cutting through the old west and the 'black wind' taking revenge ever so often by killing a worker. I can't find the quote now. Do you know anything on that. The lines about "white meat and black meat" has me stumped too.
John was reportedly Bob Dylan's favorite songwriter. Both his self-titled debut and this album are fantastic. John tackled a combination of very dark and very lighthearted topics, and he could do either in both serious and comedic ways. Just one of the great American songwriters.
Im an old man who's seen a lot of my musical heroes pass away. When Covid took John I think that was the one that hit me the hardest. I cut my musical teeth picking and singing those songs. 3 chords and the truth. RIP.
🎉when hewas at SPAC more than 40 years back he was fun walking about,I was on the staff that watched the back of the stage for John and many more of his like. When I went to go home one night I started my 75 VEGA to find that it had a smoke bomb in the tail pipe😅 thanks for the memory John where ever you may be.Those times where priceless.
Bushy Prout, this was very entertaining! Perhaps it could be called the organ donor song 😂. But seriously, thanks to you for the request and to Harri for his input. 🌺✌️
Thanks so very much Harri for this reaction. John is one of my favorites and his songwriting is unbelievable. This is such a great song!! So many great songs by John Prine.
One of the greatest songwriters ever, Angel from Montgomery, Paradise, Sam Stone. Are some of the best but I could name 15 to 20 more off the top of my head.
I have been a John Prine fan 50 years, fortnate to see hm twice prior to his death. He was an incredible songwriter who wrote many songs till days bfore his death, covered by great artist including "Angel From Montgomery" for Bonnie Raitt. She and John were great freinds for life and played together often and shared many mutual feelings on imortant issues. This last year, Bonnie won the Grammy for "best song of the year" for her recently written tune called"Just in Time", one of several for her. She said in her acceptance speech she was thinking about John when she wrote it. When I heard her song, considered their relationship and the fact she was thinking of him and his unfortunate death when she wrote"Just In Time", "Please Don't Bury" me came to my mind immiedetely. Both songs are each artists rendition of important factor dear to both of their hearts: Before you die, become an organ donater. You should lsten to "Just in Time" and check out her version of the same task of donating your organs.
John Prine wrote so many great songs. He can make you belly laugh, and then turn around and make you cry. A treasure! 😊 Harri, you should listen to Hello In There, to Sam Stone, and also Dear Abby sometime if you get a chance. Thanks for this one!
John Prine and Iris Dement sing a song called In Spite of Ourselves, and it's hilarious, please do a reaction to this song, I'm pretty sure others will love it too
Fun guy to be sure but also very insightful. Hello in there, Hello written when he was in his early 20’s. Angel From Montgomery also, about an old woman. One of the last songs he recorded, I Remember Everything is a touching farewell.
I have been a fan of John's music for 48 years now. There is nobody else out there like he was. Nobody. He wrote and performed so many great songs, unique songs, songs you couldn't ever fully enjoy unless you listened to every word of them. His wit, compassion and passion came through on all of them. He was one of those rare songwriters who could make you laugh and cry on one song, sometimes on one line. He sang about people - people who were so dissimilar to himself but for whom he had great sympathy or empathy. When he was very young he wrote about lonely old folks (Hello in There), a disenchanted middle-aged woman (Angel from Montgomery) and the destruction and razing of his grandparents' home town for the sake of a strip mine (Paradise). He also wrote about love, lost love, troubled love, rejection and longing. And while some of those topics might sound depressing, he usually made you laugh in the middle of it. And he threw in some satirical songs reserved for his country, which had sometimes offended his left-leaning politics. He was a treasure, and is often referred to as a "National Treasure." I certainly think he was. And although I never met the man, I have read countless accounts from people who did - ordinary fans. He never failed to be kind and friendly to those who recognized him on the street, and sometimes would invite them to share a meal or a drink with him. He'd pose for a photo or share an autograph with fans, and I never read of anyone saying he was rushed or bothered by their request. And although he never was a huge star and never even had a "hit" record, that was just fine with him. He appreciated what he had. He even wrote a song about that as well. "How Lucky" (can one man get). I will miss him forever.
John was beloved in the music business. Everyone turned out to shore their respect. He wrote one of the most beautiful songs ever written -Angel From Montgomery - the Bonnie Raitt/Ruthie Foster version is a must hear.
love this love , I am huge John Prine fan and love this song. He is a genious song writer. I know John was cremated and half his ashes are buried with his Parents and other half was scattered innear Paradise , KY in the Green River near Rochester dam i belief
He and Arlo Guthrie were two artist I went to see any time they played somewhere not too far away. John live was like Arlo and have some talk between the songs that was just as good as the songs. Absolutely loved it!
I don't think "Kiss my ass goodbye" was directed at his detractors. It's just the expression. Try Sam Stone if you think John is all laughs. It's got some humor, but it is pretty dark humor.
John was funny and we lost him too soon, but he lived a good life, anyway. This album was the first one of his I bought. He was tender. Listen to "Souveniers" with Steve Goodman.
Whether one of his songs makes you laugh or cry, you feel better after you've heard it. If you gave Jesus a wallet, he'd have a picture of John in it in nothing flat!
I love John. Great singer songwriter. If you want a funny song, try mississippi squirrel revival by ray stevens or cow pattie by jim stafford. I think you'll enjoy both of them.

"Despite Of Ourselves" and "Let's Talk Dirty In Hawaiian" are other great choices from in John Prine.
"In Spite of Ourselves"
@@jamestaylor2920 oops, my mistake.
Both great choices. The live set Far From Me in 1986 has a great live cut of Let's Talk Dirty in Hawaiian with a classic Prine storytelling intro.
@@sallysharp3845 What da heck a-moka-moka dear. Twas but a typo.
BTW, great choices in Prine tunes!
One of my John Prine favourites. A brilliant songwriter. Other JP goodies;
Ain't Hurting No One
I Remember Everything
Let's Talk Dirty in Hawaiian
John got me through life
Loved him
Just obtain a copy of his first album and listen. Every song is perfection.
You got that right!
John was beloved in the music business. Everyone turned out to shore their respect. He wrote one of the most beautiful songs ever written -Angel From Montgomery - the Bonnie Raitt/Ruthie Foster version is a must hear.
"Jesus, The Missing Years" John Prine Live at Austin City Limits ....pull it up it's on You Tube,,,Ya gotta hear it....
love this love , I am huge John Prine fan and love this song. He is a genious song writer. I know John was cremated and half his ashes are buried with his Parents and other half was scattered innear Paradise , KY in the Green River near Rochester dam i belief
john is a very deep rabbit hole brother
Illegal Smile is one of my favorites!
“Give my love to rose” is a call out to a Johnny Cash song. He was an amazing song writer. The funniest and saddest song ever written.
"sounds like a free soul, to me" -- man, you have no idea. I don't think there was or will be anyone like him on the planet.
You could probably spend the next month doing nothing but John Prine songs and we'd all have a blast!
A real storyteller. RIP💖☯☮
He and Arlo Guthrie were two artist I went to see any time they played somewhere not too far away. John live was like Arlo and have some talk between the songs that was just as good as the songs. Absolutely loved it!
Another great John Prine song:- Lake Marie (def. his best song pls listen)
As I have always said, there are two types of people: those who love John Prine, and those who have never heard him.
"Give My Love To Rose" was a famous Johnny Cash song.
Good show. You really should hear Prine's 'Picture Show'. He did it on Letterman in '92. It's a beautiful tangle of words.
Whether one of his songs makes you laugh or cry, you feel better after you've heard it. If you gave Jesus a wallet, he'd have a picture of John in it in nothing flat!
Hey its Gospel
He is just a great lyricist. Most of the time it doesn't matter "why."
He loved humor. Gova listen to "In spite of Ourselves" with Ires DeMint or "Let's talk dirty in Hawaiian"
Johnny Cash had a wonderful song, Give My Love to Rose. I've always wondered if that line was an homage to Johnny Cash.
I love John. Great singer songwriter. If you want a funny song, try mississippi squirrel revival by ray stevens or cow pattie by jim stafford. I think you'll enjoy both of them.
