John Prine was a master of wrting a line that appears to be simple at first glance, but is actually incredibly profound.

For a laugh, check out John Prine’s Dear Abby song from 1973 where an unhappy guy writes to a famous advice columnist and gets her response. And I keep wondering about art imitating life.
Trivia: The real life Dear Abby newspaper column is half the story of the Friedman twins, Pauline Esther (Popo) and Esther Pauline (Eppie). We start when advice column Ask Ann Landers was created in 1943 by Chicago Sun-Times columnist Ruth Crowley. On Crowley’s death in 1955, Eppie Friedman Lederer took over the column. In 1956 Popo Friedman launched a competing column, Dear Abby, using the pen name Abigail Van Buren. The twins were estranged for nearly a decade after this. Go figure. They publicly reconciled in 1964. Daughter Jeanne Phillips began contributing to Dear Abby in 1987 and assumed all writing responsibility in 2000 as her Popo became incapacitated. Popo Friedman died in 2013 at age 94. The Ask Ann Landers column ended in 2002 with the death of Eppie Friedman Lederer (83).

"The Other Side of Town" is pure gold. Do give it a listen, you'll smile and think about it the rest of the day. John Prine made the world a better place with the souvenirs he left us.

Glad you're enjoying John Prine's music. Check out Bruised Orange (Chain of Sorrow). Has one of my favorite line of any song. "It ain't such a long drop, don't stammer, don't stutter. From the diamonds in the sidewalk to the dirt in the gutter. And you'll carry those bruises to remind you wherever you go".

Great song. This version was from a later album Prine did after he had throat surgery, so his voice was older and pretty different. He was wonderful young, old, live, studio... all the time. There are some videos of him performing a couple songs in somebody's kitchen, and it's such a cool piece of history.

I just listened to your 3 reactions of John Prine songs (after listening to your reaction to one of my favorite Carly Simon songs). As a teenager in the early 70s I listened to so many amazingly good singer/songwriters. John Prine, Carly Simon, Paul Simon, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, John Denver and I'm sure others that I'm forgetting. John Prine has a very special place. His lyrics are not only insightful and full of such rich imagery, but also are so rhythmically pleasing. Two of my favorites are "Come Back to Us Barbara Lewis Hare Krishna Beauregard " and "Quiet Man"
    Great reaction!

Thanks for doing more John Prine, Saeed. Great song. John often dedicated this one to his good friend Steve Goodman, a fellow Chicago singer/songwriter who died in 1984 of leukemia at the age of 36. There are videos of them singing Souvenirs together, which is pretty cool, They wrote a few songs together as well. I know your list must be getting really long by now, but Steve Goodman is another guy to check out someday. He's probably best known for writing The City Of New Orleans, which Arlo Guthrie had a hit with in the 70s.

For John Prine I recommend you always play the Live version first and have the studio version in the back pocket if the audio is bad. I say that because John Prine used to talk a bit about the song origins in a little story before singing them and most of the his live videos here on youtube have good audio as well.

John Prine was one of the greatest singer/songwriters of all time. This song, though, was writen by maybe a better song writer, Steve Goodman. He wrote a lot of great songs and he died in 1984.

@SaeedReacts. There are too many great songs to recommend here but you can't go wrong, really. His first LP, For the Sake of the Song, suffers from unsympathetic production, but every other album from 1969's Our Mother the Mountain to 1978's Flyin' Shoes, is close to flawless. The later studio albums (he only made two more, if you discount the posthumous stuff) all have amazing moments (the heartbreaking song Marie from his final album is the best song about homelessness I've ever heard) but they're not quite as consistent as his earlier ones. Decades of unhealthy living sadly diminished his creative output. I've been enjoying and admiring your analyses of song lyrics so I'm looking forward to hearing how you'll interpret Townes. More power to you, sir
