Fire Not a Drill Evacuation!! - 4/14/23

- Wow, this day was chaotic. At 8:40 am as the bell stopped ringing for 2nd period to begin, the alarm started to go off. We were really confused on what was going on. As you can tell from the way the video started and the announcement, this was not a drill. So after about 6 minutes or so, the fire department started showing up, so our first thought as students was that there was a fire. After about 25 minutes, we were ordered back into the building as there was no fire in the building, but instead the system was caused by a faulty smoke detector in carpentry (according to the fire alarm inspector and other sources). The strobe continued to flash for about two hours since the activation, and as you could tell at the end of the video, the teachers were tired of it and decided to break code violation temporarily, but at the end of the day, everything was back to normal(ish). This will go down as one of the craziest Fridays I’ve ever witnessed.

According to a couple people who were in carpentry, a machine overheat and caused black smoke, causing the alarm, but the fire alarm inspector at our school messaged me it was due to a faulty smoke detector, so I’m not too sure what caused the alarm
I remember one time back in December 2018, my high school school had an actual fire alarm, the cause was a busted hot water pipe that bursted on the 2nd floor. Everyone evacuated, fire department showed up, after investigation everyone was moved into the auditorium, some in the gym and cafeteria, The pipe was shut off but the fire alarm was still going off but in audible silence. 2 classrooms upstairs were closed and had to be relocated to the first floor.

The smoke detector in that carpentry room went into alarm or the smoke detector outside of the carpentry in the hallway went into alarm.
The Fire alarm control panel or the announciator would have shown the location of the smoke detector is in alarm

It’s a good thing that they have speaker strobes in the classroom that way they don’t scare the crap out of people
Unfortunately, not all is fortunate. Other classrooms in the building had horn strobes.

Oh my goodness! I’m so sorry this happened. It’s a good thing there was not a real fire!! My kids had a fire at their school at the beginning of the year, a light burst in their gymnasium, but it is all clear now.
Wow, they have speaker strobes? My first ever class, literally my FIRST ever school had these speaker strobes.

So I have not experienced a real fire in about a year. In September 2021, it was my second month at a new school (I moved from a large high school that had activations all the time), and it was during my lunch period. It was about 11:30 and the fire alarms went off. We were outside for a short period of time, similar to that of a fire drill, but it turns out a chemistry experiment went wrong which activated the system. Went off twice. Good Wednesday.

This happened at all 3 of my schools. One time the alarm activated during a pep rally at my middle school
wow, this same thing happened to me once to! same problem except ours went off 3 times because they kept trying to silence it.

The same thing happened to my high school in May of 2008. They ended up having to disable the system. Because they added up having to replace the faulty smoke detector. Because even they did clean it. It kept tripping thankfully it happened on the last hour of school and it was on a Friday. And it looks like they are upgrading the system because it’s been there since the late 70s. It has a simplex 4208 and 4100. With a mix of 4050s and 4903s and true alerts. The new system will most likely be Notifer. Because they have been installing L Series lately.
L series should have synchronized like wheelock or simplex or Edwards or also gentex too

I remember one time in February during high school, the fire alarm went off during the middle of my Algebra class. I first thought that it was a rare February fire drill cuz normally, my high school skips November and February due to them doing tornado drills. That was I started before noticing fire trucks arriving in which it turned out that a fire happened inside a bathroom.
That was 2 days after my fire alarms went off but no fire or no drill just smoke but it was during my lunch and i barely even ate lunch 😢 it went off April 12, 2023
At my old school they had no horns at all besides in the gyms everything was strobes and intercom system beeping instead

So does this count as one of your drills? Since the building was evacuated, I would imagine they might use this incident to fulfill one of their drills since there was no fire. At the hospital I worked at, an accidental alarm counted even though it was an unscheduled drill. Also is that the protocol to tell everyone to evacuate over the intercom if an unplanned alarm goes off? Thanks.
It does not, we are still doing a monthly drill, but it’s tornado instead of fire

Why did you say back to normal(ish)? Was the evacuation message recorded by a staff member of the school? I don't recognize that voice as being one of the typical Simplex voices.

October 4, 2023 at 10:57 AM I was working on an essay the fire alarm went off fire drill/false alarm. A girl with autism did not understand how to use it, so just probably decided to pull it. I think this alarm was activated in a portable or at the nearest exit to the portable. That’s all I heard. And I was in class when it happened.

that's the bell I had in my middle school for the 3 min reminder.
My high school had that bell. It replaced the old bell tone in 2008. But since then around 2018 or 2019 they got a whole new PA system. So that bell tone is no longer around.
Its one of the bogen mulitcom 2000 bell tones

We have done tornado drills in April and May, and did hold drills during the winter months

And I don’t think they shoulda sent you back in if the strobes are still flashing. They should have reset the alarm first. Flashing lights can disturb classes.
I guess the reason why was to reset/clear the smoke detector, since it caused the alarm in the first place

@@susiekazoku8665 That defeats the entire purpose of the visual signal on a fire alarm notification appliance which is to warn you of a fire in progress & to evacuate the building immediately.
