    Hi Barrett,
    I'm Geoffrey, Japanese mother Caucasian father born and raised in Sydney Australia and I did what you did but I'm still in Tokyo after more than 30 years and have experienced basically everything you mention. The name thing made me smile because it's a constant problem I face.
    Anyway, what I wanted to say is the best solution to your iPhone problems is have separate phones. I have an iPhone for Japan, one for Australia, and one for Singapore because I have family there and I used to visit before the pandemic. By doing this you have the required online security etc for the apps for that country without any problems related to being overseas. I pay bills in Australia with the Australian iPhone from Japan and shop on all the Japanese apps you mentioned (and pay online) when I visit my parents in Sydney. I pay Singapore bills from Tokyo every month as well. I have a local SIM card in each phone (Japanese for the Japanese iPhone, Singapore one for the Singapore phone, and Australian for the Australian phone) so I can receive SMS security codes etc when I need to. Most of the time I use wifi. I use the same apple account for each phone so iMessage appears on all of them, I use a group chat with WhatsApp so messages appear on all phones and I think you can do the same with LINE. Anyway, hope this helps you!

      That's an interesting solution. I think I'd still have a problem if I were to use the same Apple account on each though, particularly with app downloading/updating. I don't get some of the Japan apps I'd need with my US Apple account, so I switch to my Japan one to update. Thanks for sharing though!

    I know what your talking about!! I am Japanese and I always wonder why the paperwork and hanko and all the process has to be so rigid and incovenient... It really doesn't make sense. And all the IT infrastructure and apps that we use are terribly made(some are getting a little bit better), especially the ones made by the government. I am so jealous that you live in such a good place like hawaii!!! Hope you have a wonderful time living there:)

    Dang Barrett that is a lot of steps to sort through these issues. The banking for you and wife. Interesting no joint accounts in Japan. RUclips adsense will your stats transfer over from Japan to US - continunity? For Apple account or Japan exclusive apps issue is it possible to use a VPN?
    Basically when living in a another country you have to setup from the start. Any family from your wife side able to assist with any of the accounts? Or will Japan be strict and need the actual person to be there?
    Hopefully a success video for the next update.

    • @barrettish
      @barrettish  Год назад +1

      Yeah, luckily for RUclips, the channel itself remains the same. It’s just the financial part that needs to be completely switched if you move countries.
      I haven’t tried a VPN to switch Apple accounts but I don’t think it’d work. I’m pretty sure you have to be logged into an Apple JP account and have a payment linked to it (maybe).
      With the banking, I don’t think anyone but the actual person can sort out the issues unfortunately. I’ll have to do that the next time I’m in Japan. Fun trip lol

    What a hassle, painful to listen to but surely more painful to live through!
    Here in Sweden we have an electronic identification called BankID which you can apply for and connect to your Personal identity number/social security number. The BankID can then be used with banks, verification log-in for different apps and web sites, the tax agency and so on. I really hope Japan will step up their game as I am currently studying and hoping to work abroad in Japan for a few years afterwards. I am prepared mentally for a lot of paperwork..

    • @barrettish
      @barrettish  Год назад +1

      Sounds convenient! Japan is trying, I think, but they’re really slow at both the government level down to the consumer level at creating, implementing and using any kind of digital tech. Hopefully they make progress in the next few years!

    Wow…just hearing you telling us these issues is giving me headaches, so I can't imagine you have to go through them. Who would have thought that an advanced country like Japan would have such a backward banking infrastructure!!! Hope you get all these sorted out soon!

    Hey Barrett, for your Iphone region have you tried changing it in your General Settings>Language&Region? I had the same issue when I first got to Japan when trying to download the 711 Netprint app and when I changed my region to Japan I was able to find and download it from the App Store without having to make a separate Apple ID. You may have already tried this but I thought I'd point it out just in case.

    • @barrettish
      @barrettish  Год назад +1

      Hmm that’s interesting you were able to download it. I’ve done it for little things like calendar settings and what not, but maybe it could work? It said I’d have to cancel my Apple Music account for some reason but maybe if I didn’t have that, I’d be able to. In any case, I can switch back and forth now since I updated my phone number. Thanks for sharing though!

    Wow, what a drag. Sorry to hear that. Why didn't you close all your Japanese bank accounts? Are there still transactions going through? Or are you planning to return to Japan one day?

    • @barrettish

      We felt/feel there's a possibility, at least for us to be in Japan for periods of time. That'd be the ideal at least.

    Very helpful info. I just created Wise Card and Yuucho Ginkou as well (in debit form). My concern here is that should I transfer my savings from Yuucho account into Wise account before leaving Japan? Should I retain my Japan mobile number while travelling abroad for SMS code when withdrawing money?

    • @barrettish
      @barrettish  Год назад

      I can’t really say what you should do with your accounts, I just know what issues I ran into. Regarding your Japan number though, if you have the option to keep it then that’d be best, I think. You may not be able to register a foreign number at some accounts and others will likely require a fee to use your bank account from abroad.

    Great info, I'm sure lots of people didn't know how much trouble bank accounts would be. I wonder if using a international bank like Citi would help.

    • @barrettish

      Yeah lots of things to consider. I think that would be better but Citi and Bank of America are basically not in Japan anymore as far as I know.

    I'm definitely feeling a lot of this moving to Japan. I had so much trouble making a wire transfer for my apartment because of all the 2 factor authentication with my bank. So I had to ask my friend who happened to be traveling with a US number to help me out with that. It's such a tough transition because of laws and regulations of apps and banks beyond country borders. I do recall I had to change my Apple account's region for the app store to Japan though. I switched from US to Japan before, but I just recall it's quite a hassle to do it back and forth.
    About the RUclips channel though, I was hoping I could grow a US audience and also get paid in USD. Is that not gonna be the case if I set my channel to Japan?

    • @barrettish
      @barrettish  Год назад +1

      Yeah I hear ya, it’s basically having to think of everything as completely separate. I didn’t switch my Apple account and have 1 in each country but it’s a hassle as well.
      I’m. It 100% sure but I think for RUclips it’s fine. Your RUclips channel and Adsense account are separate things, so you can have a Japan channel while linking your US bank and info to your Adsense, then connecting them. My Adsense is still in Japan and haven’t actually completed the switch yet…

    • @barrettish

      Yeah I don’t think it works for those kinds of things. Anything to do with linking to a phone number, bank, etc, I think it requires a local account. It works for Netflix though lol

    I'm an American living in Japan. I have an account at SMBC bank for foreigners. If I move back to the USA, I am required to cancel this account. I think the easiest would be to do a wire transfer from your Japan bank to your USA bank account. I believe for wire transfers, that has to be done in person before you leave. Take care and continued good luck!!
