Love this! Thanks for making this one :)
Thank you, reverse culture shock is tough haha
Welcome back 🤙 Appreciate the insight.
Hey thanks! 🙌
Tipping is crazy in the USA. We stopped going to NYC every year from Scotland, as each year the cost of eating and drinking out was eye watering. We started resenting it. Better to not go anymore. There will always be pros and cons for each country. Hope it gets better for you.
Yeah, I'm not sure why the system in the US is designed like that. You have to really want it if you're going to eat at a restaurant these days! But yes, there's pros and cons everywhere, no place is perfect. Thank you!
This was interesting. Great video 👍
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching! 🙌
Yay Barrett getting back in the swing of things. The live bird sounds were nice. Can't wait to see the next video, I wish for the best for you and Mrs. Ishida adjusting to Hawaii.
Thanks! 🙌 I’m glad you liked the birds, I was worried they’re too distracting haha
Welcome back to the States, Barrett! Yeah, sorry for the hassles. There should be a checklist for internationals moving here. Would spare many a gray hair…🙃
Thanks! haha there really should be a checklist 😆
Totally with you on your “real dogs” comment - had more than a chuckle with that observation. Welcome back home!
haha you caught that 😅 Thank you!
I mean, there's a reason why the fruits are more expensive in Japan :) don't know about hawaii, espeicially as its an island that imports, but if you want good fruits only buy local and and in season to get the best tasting.
True lol. Yeah pretty much everything is imported in Hawaii, you can get good fruits that are grown locally like mangoes but harder to get those typical ones.
Macy’s will always be Liberty House (to me) 😂
haha yeah, for me Hawaii Macy’s are Macy’s* with an asterisk… not fully Macy’s
I don’t shop at Macy’s-that’s crazy that you have to look on an app to check a price🙄. Where I am located in California, we have 3 bins: trash, recycle & green waste. I visited Hawaii and my experience is some things are more expensive than Cali. Thank you for sharing.
I know right! Yeah, we have the same bins in Hawaii as well. I also think Hawaii is more expensive than Cali, from everyday items to home renovations. Everything has to be shipped, unfortunately :( Thank you for watching!
Hi Barrett! Curious as to how your wife is transitioning to living in the US.
I’ll probably cover a little about that here and there later. Right we’re still pretty new and she can’t do much until her green card arrives.
wow you are home! your house looks nice, so spacious…any chance of a house tour? have you gone surfing in Hawaii yet?
Compared to Japan, yes lol. Probably not anytime soon since it’s not my own place unfortunately. I’ve gone to the beach a few times but I can’t surf 😅
wow nice house and nice weather! Do you surf?
A little too nice weather, I like cooler fall weather actually lol. And I don't surf! 😅
Welcome back home!
Mask use in Hawaii is considerably higher than anyplace I've gone up on the mainland or Canada.
Fruits - just gotta buy local fruit so it's more ripe. The stuff in the stores from the mainland are way too green when picked. I mean I get why but if you've ever been to Cali and gotten fresh fruit from a roadside stand you know what's up.
As for Macy's. There's a reason they slowly going out of business sadly. Just like Sears...hopefully they can turn things around.
And sadly. That meal from Hawaiian is more than any other domestic carrier unless you're flying first class or pay for your meal. Glad to hear the Japanese carriers still provide.
Later on- maybe you can make a list of must have / most missed stuff from Japan. Like the bidet...which I definitely miss.
Thank you! Yeah I can imagine mask usage being higher in Hawaii.
I don't remember having good fruits in Cali either, but that's probably because I pretty much only went to the supermarket lol. I need to go to more farmers' markets and roadside stands.
I'm not enthusiastic about flying domestic in the US haha. Hawaiian's meal tasted fine, but it's less than what Delta gives on their international flights between Tokyo and Honolulu.
I'm sure I'll make one of those videos down the road! Thanks for the rec!
I would advise folks coming back or coming to the USA is the issue of MEDICAL INSURANCE. If you are not employed, you don't have medical coverage. About 12 years ago, a friend lost his job. One day he was rushed to the hospital with a serious medical problem. He ended up spending 2.5 months in the hospital and a $3.4 million dollar bill. Hell, if you went to the emergency room for any treatment via ambulance, and spent a few days there, tests, maybe a $17,000 bill. I would get coverage of some sort. Even though you're young, you never know.
Definitely, that was one of the first things I made sure I figured out. Medical costs in the US are insane. I'd also advise insurance when traveling abroad, even Japan. My mom had an emergency while visiting and was had a lot things done and was in the hospital for almost a month. Luckily they were able to get things figured out and their US insurance paid. That's also the time we realized that medical costs were pretty different... it wasn't cheap of course, but probably a lot cheaper than it would've been if the same things were done in the US.
@@barrettish Great that you have this solved. Another thing for retired americans, Medicare will NOT pay for any medical services/treatments or anything out of the USA. If you are employed, some company medical plans cover some treatments overseas, but many don't. Continued good luck to you and your family!!
You’re saying it’s challenging for yourself, how is it for your wife? It must be really really challenging
Yeah, there’s a lot of things to adjust to. I think she feels that the US is better for certain things such as work, but that the everyday quality of life is better in Japan. I don’t disagree with that.
Thanks for the update, Barrett! I agree that low quality food, tipping, and lack of consideration for others are the things that bother me most about the US (and don't get me started on guns!)
I definitely agree!
All the best. Has your wife ever been to Hawaii? Would she be able to find work there?
Thanks! Yeah, she's been so she's relatively familiar with things. There's a lot of work for Japanese people in Hawaii, it's just an issue of where and if it's good or not. She needs to get a green card though, so we're waiting on that.
When I moved to US from South Korea I was very surprised that you don’t respect someone who is older than you and I feel like English has more freedom speech since there are not much polite talking sentences compared to Korean and Japanese. 😅
Yeah, I think people respect elders but it’s based more on merit than just doing so because they were born first. It’s definitely not at the same level as Japan or South Korea.
Thanks for sharing your shocks!
WASS...SUP, MA Baddah🤙🤙
Ayy! 🙌
I feel like it was a good thing you left Japan, so many negatives of living in Japan.
I’m thinking (hoping) that as well, at least for the long term. There’s definitely positives and negatives to both places though.
