- A severe southerly gale creates these enormous storm waves crashing onto the rocks and low cliff of Portland Bill, Dorset. Chaotic disturbance in the sea here is caused by the notorious Portland Race, water rising and tumbling over gigantic undrsea ledges.
Last August (2015) I was sat with my legs dangling over the rock edge right next to that "hand crane", fishing for mini species as some younger people were practising their rock climbing (sod that for a game of soldiers!) in the gulley just to the right of the crane. Let's just say that I am glad I got to see this video AFTER me going there!
Excellent footage. Thanks for sharing, Stuart.
Great video thanks
Big scary waves! Portland Bill is the best place for watching stormy seas....so is Chesil beach as the noise of the cobbles being raked back and tossed back up the beach if incredible. I can't work out how sometimes the sea can be so lumpy in a storm, but other times not. I've seen the sea during 100mph winds and it has been blown almost flat by the wind....
Thanks Stuart, great storm footage. Visited Portland Bill last year and found it very atmospheric.
Amazing how that crane survives these storms ! Great video !
Absolutely terrifying for a sea kayaker in those conditions!
Terrifying for a huge tanker, container ship in those conditions, off portland.
one of the worst i ever seen was holyhead harbour . and that is supposed to be protected .
Very wild amazing footage
Was there in August my god windy but wat a place
Wow!
