For me Morning Phase is a top 10 album ever made. Absolutely stunning. Deep. Emotional. Gorgeous. Serene. Peaceful. He has such beautiful layers to every song. So happy that the grammys went with a true artist and not the popular picks.
Beck is far beyond any one trying to criticize him. He’s a Genius who is not looking to be an Icon. He just is.

Every so often I come back to this song in particular. I don't distract myself by scrolling on my phone or walking around the house...I just let it play, sit in silence and accept the way things are, and reevaluate future possibilities.
I lost my big blonde beautiful wife last year. I'd already purchased the album. when I saw the imagery for this song, I thought it was a message, except there is no comfort. Julie was 46. Not as young as the actress but the message is clear. Tomorrow is promised to no one. RIP my darling.

Thanks for proving the guy who said that the only people who know who Beck is are "white hipsters" wrong. Beck is pretty famous and has been making music for a long time. He became famous because he fused folk with a hip-hop style in many of his songs. It was very unique and creative. His style has changed much over the years, but his talent hasn't. Even though I don't listen to him much anymore, I can recognize that his talent hasn't waned. You don't have to be a "white hipster" (like that dude above said) to know this.

I totally agree. I was fortunate enough to see him perform many of the songs from Morning Phase at a concert in Kansas City, Missouri this past summer. Sounded incredible on stage. He engages the audience like no other performer of his generation that I know of. And he demonstrates grace and humility even as he stands at the pinnacle of his career. From the first time I heard him till now I have continued to be utterly amazed at his prolific talent

It's wrong to rain on someone else's parade. Beck has been putting out remarkable music for over 20 years and Morning Phase is no exception because it really is that good. Dude deserves it.
And for all the idiots and teenagers, keep in mind that he won Album of the year. An award that honors the artistry and technical excellence of the album. In comparison, Beck wrote, composed and produced all of the songs in Morning Phase outstandingly by himself while Beyonce needed other people to do it for her. This isn't an award for best-selling album or a fucking popularity contest.
Honestly I've realized that this is one of his best songs and videos. So deep.

Just reading about this album and I'm floored at how versatile Beck is as a musician. In addition to vocals he provided acoustic guitars, keyboards, piano, organ, ukulele, dulcimer, etc, and in addition to that all of the orchestral arrangements. The guy is amazing.
Beck is the shit. 20 years running, and the man is still going. LOVE this album. Early mornings walking to work in the dark, and this song kept me moving.

what I love about Beck as an artist is that he never stays in the box- never just cranks out formula music to sell albums. to me he is the songwriters songwriter . and On this album I feel that he nods to Brian Wilson several times with those distinctive Beach Boys harmonies. He also tips the hat to Paul McCartney with a bass hook that was a Beatles signature sound.Yes, he is an experimental genius !!

Reminds me of coming to terms with my Mother's death, as I'm sure Beck did with his Mom. Very poignant and brings a tear to my eye every time I see this. Beautiful song.

After watching this video, I have a theory: This song is not about a girl, but about Beck's career. The guy who appears at 0:32 is from "Loser". The "Girl" from 1:19 was killed by the Grimm reaper from "Loser". The Grimm reaper acts as Beck's Sea Change album, which was recorded after a breakup. The album is so good it officially "kills off" the relationship Beck had with that girl. When Beck saw that "Girl" walking with the "Loser", it's kinda like the loser telling Beck it's okay to be a loser(i put this because if you notice everything after "Mellow Gold" is different from his laid-back persona". at 2:00 you see the same guy, but this time instead of having long hair, he has a "Devils Haircut". The Grim reaper almost killed the guy holding the girl because he didn't believe in being a "Loser" and having a "Devils Haircut". Lastly, later in the video you see Beck walking with that girl who was revived because he now sees his mistakes and happily enjoys being a "Loser". it was a difficult change from mellow gold to morning phase, so that's why his "Heart is a Drum".

What amazes me with this song is the INCREDIBLE SOUND. Mastering by Bob Ludwig. Please note: there are no crash cymbals in the mix, not sure there's hi-hats at all. This idea is borrowed from Peter Gabriel, I think. Also: the guitar you hear at the top sounds just like... Joni Mitchell, the vocal harmonies sounds like that of Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues. Heck the music sounds like the Moody Blues. Always remember that in terms of sound, LESS IS MORE, and this is a glaring example of what a top production should be.

This is a remarkable example of making HUGE sounds with few elements, the guitar in the intro sounds so warm and clear is just beautiful, the same goes for the rest of the band and the song, do you know where recorded it?
