We're not worthy! We're not worthy! All we can do is look up into the sky and wait for the drops of wisdom to pull us into the light. Great job! Thank you so much!
Since entering the Fuji ecosystem, your videos have been tremendously helpful. Fuji's got a lot going for them but honestly their menu system isn't one of those things, so thanks for helping make sense of it all.
This is brilliant. So clear and relevant. And just what I needed as a former Sony user on day one of my XT4 ownership trying to get my head around the camera’s focus options. Thank you!
A content like this makes me even more interested in switching from Panasonic to Fujifilm. Been confused for few months and I think Imma bout to switch. See yah, X-T3 on december!
At last I now understand how to set up video on my X-T4. You are a true master. A billion thanks for all your hard work, extremely informative and eloquent videos. 👏👏👏🥂🍾
I am new to mirrorless cameras and coming from a gopro background where everything is always in focus, it's quite daunting to understand focusing. This video is really helpful. The xt3 is my first camera and each time I watch your videos, it makes me very happy I chose to go with fuji. Anyone new to fuji cameras, I think this is the best channel to truly understand their cameras. Thanks for the amazing videos. Cheers 🥂 And yes, plz make more tutorials about shooting videos with the xt3
I bought a XT-4 about 4 months ago and knew nothing about these modern cameras....80% of everything ive learnt to date is from my mate Pal2tech...watched him so much he now feels more like an old friend:)
Thanks for doing this I just purchased an XT-4 since I am going on vacation soon and during last year’s vacation I missed some great shots so it’s a whole new world for me.
Maybe you can also make a video about the best fuji lenses for shooting videos with regards to auto focus speed, low light performance, price and which lenses are generally better for shooting close ups b-roll. That would help us folks here tremendously.
Hi @Pal2Tech, My question is on autofocusing during shooting video when the subject is not human or say a human facing away from the camera. I have an XS 10. Also tried the XT3. Both have exactly the same settings and features available in terms of autofocus. Basically how to track a dynamic subject in video without face or eye detect working? Fixing the zone isn't a solution if the subject is too dynamic like a dog.
1 comment, 1 request (not related to this video). COMMENT: It is wonderful to see you have increased your subscriber base by 6 times (5k to 32k) over the past year. IMHO you are the best source for Fuji related functional information. Always well produced & very enjoyable to watch. Please keep it up. REQUEST for your input: My purchase decision is between the XT4 & XS10 (fortunately price difference is not a factor). In your opinion is the XT4 small enough for you to take with you most of the time (without a specific purpose). I am a hobbyist, taking pictures of my grandchildren, occasional travel & street, & enjoy taking my small Lumix GM5 with me most of the time (Very little video). The XS10 has enough functionality for my needs. The only thing missing are weather sealing & type II SD card capability (this is absolutely just a NICE TO HAVE). I am concerned that The XT4 will be too big, even with f2 primes (weight is not a factor). I know this is subjective, hence your input. With the exception of creating RUclips videos, I believe my photo activities would correspond to yours. Thank you in advance.
Hi Morrie, thank you! I think the XS10 would be better. Now keep in mind though that I've not yet received or tested one. So until that happens, I can't say for sure. Fuji is supposed to loan me one for a few weeks, so as soon as they do, I'll get a review up ASAP. However, from what I hear, that would be your best bet. Cheers to you and I hope you are staying safe!!
Thank you thank you thank you!! I was so frustrated with the autofocus on my X-T4… now I understand everything so much better and I have waaay much control! Not getting out of focus footage all the time anymore! 😃😃😃
Wow, again a hugely useful video. It’s great to have a summary of how to use focus in video. I have a lot of trouble working or the best way to focus, and seem to miss a bit. Thank you, Chris!
Thanks as always! My X100V is stuck in AF-C for video. I want to use touch area as you’ve described here, but the camera is constantly autofocusing on the box without my pushing the shutter halfway. And yes, the switch Is set to S.
Thank you so much for taking the time to produce these very instructive videos. I own a Fuji X-T2 that iI love but would love to purchase an X-T5 soon. I will always keep my X-T2 though. When it comes to Fuji gear and how to use it best, you are always my first reference.
The problem with XT3 and XT4 is that there are different AF settings for different lenses. Also differences if you are indoors in Studio environment or outdoors.
Wow! I will need to watch this only 6 more times! Question: Why do you recommend setting tracking at 0 (rather then 3,4,5?) Is it more stable here (i.e. to reduce "hunting"?)
The set ups were quite helpful. The next day I videotaped two speakers which would be a 15 minute video. When I downloaded the file from my card, I discovered 3 short videos. First one stopped, second picked up as if a “breath” was taken, continuing until the second break. Three videos intended as one. I can stitch the files together but not optimal. What would cause this? At no time did I touch the camera which was on a tripod.
Haha that intro! But I needed a shot of that whiskey to get through this big guy. Thanks to you, I think many of us have graduated well past this sort of stuff, a while ago. Maybe the problem is I keep returning back to my grade 5 teacher in hopes to learn grade 12 content lol. “in post” tips and tricks would be greatly appreciated. How about how to shoot and correctly expose for f log, hlg, then how to colour grade the 10 bit file, how to apply a lut. Any pro tips or operation hacks would be awesome too - you’re an insanely creative guy, we’d love to know. Bottoms up! 🥃
What is your recommendation while recording a place where you want pretty much everything in focus like a cityscape or place? Should I use manual focus for that scenario. Thank you
Hello there. Thank you for this video, very useful. I've two questions. Q1. Which AF setting do you recommend to focus a flying bird while the camera is panning and Q2. When a small bird is comparatively stable but perched in cluttered surroundings. Thank you very much!
Fantastic video! Puh! That was a lot to digest. But man, that was a good one and well explained. Keep up the good work! What would us new Fujufilm shooters do without you?? :-)
Can I ask please, if i want to shoot a football game. I want the whole pitch to be in focus, which is the whole camera screen. Which focus mode should I choose? I shot one game already, and the camera kept going out of focus sometimes. Also keeping in mind I don’t keep the camera stil, I move it to follow the action.
Thank you so much for this video! I was so confused by all of the different settings, and this totally helped clear everything up in a very succint way. 🙏
Hey pal2tec - great video! I recently puchased Fuji X-T200..when shooting movie you can change the focus area by using the touchscreen! However, this option is not available for the joystick. Once I hit the shutter button, the focus area can only be switched on the touchscreen but not by the stick...and yes, the stick is turned "ON". Any idea?
I just tried some (most) of these tips with my X-Pro3 and I think it's either not working the same way or I have some other settings messed up. But I got a good starting point for playing around with the differnt settings. Thanks. I really love my Pro3 but I wish Fuji had made it slightly more convinient to capture video. For example I remember my old E2 could switch to video via a function button. So far I did not manage to find something similar on the Pro3 and it annoys me to get into the drive menu every time I switch between stills and video. If you happen to have a Pro3 available that might be a t topic for another tutorial, workarounds for pro3-video-shooting. ;) Cheers.
Is the new firmware makes something different for the gimbal ronin sc talking about this video. I am following your previous video to setting my gimbal and its not working following your instructions. Hello from Sacramento.
why is it that when I'm in video mode and I go to menu the AFMF options are mostly greyed out? I have to switch back to S mode and then I can adjust these settings. Is this the case or is something wrong with my XT3? Thanks
How do I lock the exposure while shooting a video? I use to set my camera fixed on a tripod and then I shoot me or my Dogs or my jeep passing by, so the background remains the same for the clip while a subject is crossing the scene... Well the camera changes automatically the exposure while I shoot and that is very bad to see...
Hello, very useful video. Thanks. I’ve found in movie mode if you have focus mode set to af-s and touchscreen focus set to af and start recording a video, you can touch the screen focusing without locking the af. The difference with af-c mode is in af-s mode you tap and the camera doesn't focus continuously with focus hunting. It only works when the camera is recording.
I think I'm understanding you to say: If focus-hunting is a problem, set the camera Focus Mode to Touchscreen: AF, and be in AF-S mode. And then focus-hunting will be reduced. Is that this gist? Thank you for the tip!
Yes, thanks. Also if you start recording a clip, using touchscreen focus, the focus doesn’t lock and you can continue to focus taping the screen. It doesn’t lock only if you are recording.
Thank you for your excellent videos! It is always a pleasure watching them 🙂. A question: I just bought an xt3 and using the new firmware 4 update, when i use back button focus with my 56mm 1.2 lens in manual focus mode, the focus jumps. That is, after releasing the back af button having focused on something, I push the shutter and focus jumps to a few centimeters behind the spot I focused on, before the image is taken. This behavior is not present when using the xt20 with the 56. Have you experienced the same? I know of one other user who has, but I was afraid there was something wrong with my new xt3.
Great teacher!! In the movie mode, there is an illusive method that I can't see to get back to that combines touch screen focusing with the XT4, but lets you focus check with highlights and then fine tune focus in MANUAL then punch out. Can you tell me the settings to do this technique? Thanks
It took me some time (and a couple of videos) to get used to your teaching style, but wow you do a phenomenal job. Really excellent stuff! Thanks for all of the great content. 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Can I turn of the AF motor in the lens during manual mode? If I turn the focusring, the motor moves on. the "noise" will be at my footage. Im using the XT3 with the 23mm 1.4
Thank you, very helpful and informative. I am a video journalist using Fujifilm xt200 with Tamron 18-300 , planning to upgrade to Fujifilm xt3 , would it be helpful for my line of work , please advice.thanks
Hi, I got xt4 - 16-80 and it seems like changing AF speed does not affect the speed of the focusing at all. So nice slow focus pull are not possible. Am I missing something? Thx
Great video! Is there an option for video auto-focus tracking for moving subjects that are not people? (The one where you would mark the subject on screen and it would follow it around the screen if it's moving)🙂 It would be helpful, looking forward to your reply!
@@onicapopescu5342 i did not... I think there is no such an option on fuji cameras... ☹️ But still hoping for some feedback from @pal2tech on this topic🤞🏻
I have an X-S10 and it does not seem to be an option to 'track' moving objects when filming, unlike the tracking option when shooting stills. I noticed it today when trying to film and photograph wildlife.
bro, Does the face eye auto detect (on my XT3) not work for subjects or people which are a bit further to the camera? Like for example I was shooting a dance video and the subject was about middle of the frame with full body visible well and the little square was not moving around the eye
I really need a lie down after all that AF information! I appreciate all the effort you have put into this one; I notice there does not seem to be an option to 'track' objectswhilst filming in the same way you can when taking photographs. What setting would you recommend in movie mode when you want to track wildlife? (e.g. a bird moving across water etc). I have the X-S10 which seems to have the same menu options as the X-T4.
Hi, friend! I have a question, would you help me please? to be able to focus automatically do I have to have a lens that has the automatic aperture option? or simply with any lens that does not have that option and with the corresponding configuration could it be? thanks!
Nice video honestly few suggestion: 1. you could advise people in real life situation which mode would be better. Eg. Sometimes you want to lock the focus just a few seconds for a particular B-Roll, like following a walking human while panning, knowing there could be an obstacle in between from time to time, I always lock the focus with AF-S while keeping the same distance in filming the subject. While you can achieve the same with Manual Focus or AF-C Sensitivity tracking, but using AF-S with focus lock is much faster 2. What if the lens is fully manual, like the Mitakon 35mm 0.95, camera doesnt know the F stop in this case so the MF-distance bracket wont be seen in the LCD, anyway we can enter it manually? 3. the AF-C settings really depends on the lens as some are really old from Fuji. Have you tried using the AF-limiter for the 56mm f1.2 and used it for a talking head video shooting, is this good?
I have fujifilm x-s20 and when I record, every few seconds, it goes out of focus and everything gets blurred and destroys my videos, dont know how to fix this, please help meee😥😥
Hey @pal2tech, I have a question. I have an X-T5 now, and I programmed one of my function buttons to REC (Record video) in "Still Mode". So I can start recording a video from "Still Mode", but it seems I can't change the "Focus Area" setting when recording like this, it always seems to be "Multi" (I have set it to "Area" on "Movie Mode"). Also, the Focus Mode is always on AF-C when I start recording like that, even if the dial for that is on AF-S. Is there any chance you know how I can customize Focus Area and Focus Mode when recording from "Still Mode"?
Thanks for all your great Fujifilm instructional content! Really appreciate your teaching style.
You made my life as a Fuji Xt3 owner a little easier today. Thank you.

I cannot stress enough how useful this video was..THANK YOU. Your videos are the best and I cannot wait for more video shooting videos on the Fuji
You are a legend! This video answered every question I had about the focus settings. Thanks again!
Not often enough said but you really make me enjoy my Fuji so much more, Chris!

Thanks for the video. What's the best autofocus if vlogging?
was searching for this answer everywhere, thanks for mentioning it on 6:58, thanks!
Just wanna say thank you already :) adore your energy and videos
Thanks Sofia!!! You are most welcome!! 🙏 🙏
Great stuff. Concise with no mincing words. Appreciate the info.
I love my XT3and 4. They are amazing cameras.

Very well presented, thanks a lot!

Does focus check persist even if subject goes out of frame and comes back or will it hunt ?
Is the new firmware makes something different for the gimbal ronin sc talking about this video. I am following your previous video to setting my gimbal and its not working following your instructions. Hello from Sacramento.
You made my day
Thank you very much😄
Greetings from Austria
Thumb Zupped and Sub'd dude - that was really helpful and is much easier to relate to than the camera manual itself ! Cheers for that pal2tech.
why is it that when I'm in video mode and I go to menu the AFMF options are mostly greyed out? I have to switch back to S mode and then I can adjust these settings. Is this the case or is something wrong with my XT3? Thanks
Any reason why most of these setting are grayed out when I'm in the video AF/MF setting menu? I have the base lens kit 18-55 would that be the issue?
Dude, you rock man! Excellent video!!

I have an X-S10 and it does not seem to be an option to 'track' moving objects when filming, unlike the tracking option when shooting stills. I noticed it today when trying to film and photograph wildlife.
Brilliant stuff, keep up the great work.
Is there a setting for the blue DOF bar? I can't get it to torun on...
Master Fuji, thanks again. Always beneficial watching your guides!
Great and very helpful video! thank you

While you can achieve the same with Manual Focus or AF-C Sensitivity tracking, but using AF-S with focus lock is much faster
Thank you. I found Tip #1 really useful.
Thanks for the information. Great tutorial. 👍👍
At 4:46... Why does the focus indicator change from 10 to 8 ft (and back) while turning the aperture ring??? 🤔
Why dont fuji cameras have object tracking? Seems like a huge omission. Not that i use af much at all myself but still...
hi chris, is there any major diffeence 18-55mm lens and 16-80mm lens for shooting video, especially ois
Your dog is a beauty 🥰
Thank you so much! 🙏
This won’t work with manual lenses will it? I know the focus peak will work but I can’t seem to get the zoom in part to work
I have fujifilm x-s20 and when I record, every few seconds, it goes out of focus and everything gets blurred and destroys my videos, dont know how to fix this, please help meee😥😥
Great video! Thanks for this.
