Just last week I asked my husband if he was going to support me in my candle making adventure. He flat out told me no and his reason for that was " every swing d##k in the county is selling candles why will they buy yours". I agree with you 100% that people fail when they come into this looking for money instead of enjoying their passion. I have a vision of what my candle business is going to look like but the most important part of that vision right now is me and my daughter making candles side by side laughing at our mistakes as we live and learn our way through this adventure. Thanks for your videos
Hi Mechell, I was looking at certain sites to buy candle jars and they cost $30 per jar and those sites are wholesale. Not sure which sites cost lower. Getting a photographer not easy to find as I am in Toronto, Canada. Any advice how to get cheaper jars?
@@jessicacopper111 first I go to different craft stores that way I can touch and feel many different jars and lids and get I visual of how I want the candle to be presented. Then I start snapping pictures of prices and how they are labeled in the store that way when I go online I have an ideal of what to put into the search engine. For example if you're making a 4oz candle can you search for 4 oz glass cosmetic jars and lids, 4 oz food glass jars and lids, / 4 oz baby food jars and let's, from there whoever gives you the cheapest price then you look for that in bulk or wholesale. When you start shopping you will see it's all about the vocabulary and less about the jar. Just make sure the jar can "take the heat".

Genuinely enjoyed this video , it even more so kicked me into gear to keep myself motivated in order to continue to grow . Thank you for this amazing eye opening video 🍂
I think the idea of keeping expectations low is key. We are hoping for 6 figures maybe this year if not then next for sure. We are about to release 2 completely new brands/lines of candles along side our main one and are super excited and we literally started as a small hobby my wife wanted to try just a couple years ago. This was never even meant to be a significant source of side income but is now part of our main. I really enjoy your videos and would love to be able to ask a few questions and pick your brain sometime about the business side of things, specifically marketing/advertising. I feel we have a great product but we have pretty much been stuck on Etsy for 2 years never really being able to convert customers to an external site so we literally just shut down everything except Etsy but with current things happening on that platform have become increasingly worried about staying there.
Hey Evan. First, and I think I have told you before on FB groups.... but great work overall so far. Like you, I never intended my businesses to become what it has (at least at the onset). Heck, even including this channel to be honest. Ha. And, I'm sure we can set something up down the road to talk business. I just have to get caught up first. I am drowning. Being under the weather isn't helping either. Lol. Lastly, I completely understand your concern with Etsy. It has pros and cons like most platforms for sure.... but your reservations are 100% legit. It can be tough to migrate from one to the other. And it takes time for SEO to catch up as well.
As always. You deliver with yet another video that helps. Especially with the part about just being able to do what you live, while making a profit and enough to live off of. You're definitely inspiring me to also start my RUclips Journey, on top of everything else.
I love watching your videos very educational. I learning everyday from your videos. You motivate me to want to start tomorrow 😁but I'm testing my products right now.
Thank you for another great video. The amount of work you put into your video is epic. Being a new candle maker myself. Thus video helped a lot. Thank you

@@twochickscompany165 Yah that one definitely takes the longest to gain traction. Need to wait for SEO to catch up or speed it up with ads, influencers, etc.
1st off, why am I watching you at 3:24am?! Why...as if I don't have to be up at 7:30am. Anywho...great video as usual, and thanks for sharing like you always do.💜
Thank you for breaking down the candle biz with such precise details, I really appreciate it. Which way (s) is/ are, best for selling until you build a customer base, like say ok you have the 1st kitchen made (😁smh) batch ready , are family/ friends/farmers market- your grateful for but only "go to?"
Great question! My advice. Give a few away as testers to some family or friends. Get some honest feedback first. Then, if that goes well, make a small group on FB for example (friends family, whoever). Sell to them for a while at low cost. Basically, just cover your own cost plus a tad more for a while. At this point, you really want to make sure things are going well, and you are getting a good response. Plus it gives you time to build good internal processes with your record keeping, your recipes, etc. After this... Etsy or start a small shop and start doing local events. :)
I love watching your videos. Your passion and enthusiasm is very infectious. I only make candles for family and friends but do dream of maybe one day branching out. I will definitely sign up to your mailing list though I don't know if it makes a difference that I am in the UK?
Nope not at all (it's email mailing list). I know not all same materials are available in all places but most of what I talk about and share is pretty universal. Thanks for being here! :)
I plan on launching in the spring , what do you think about these scents to start? Cocoa butter cashmere Sea salt & orchid Oakmoss and Amber Sandlewood Vanilla Cashmere plum White sage and Lavendar Should I add a clean scent? Or would I be ok with these
I think those are great. I wish I got better throw out of oakmoss and amber as it's my favorite overall scent. I use it but it's less strong in candles compared to most my others. Where are you getting your oils from.
Laying down some serious knowledge! You leaned more into wholesale over time, would you say this is because it's easier than direct to consumer (saves time and money by making in bulk) or is it a good way to make more consistent money (avoids the social media algorithms and lowers required marketing)?
Thanks! I actually leaned more into it out demand more than anything else. I wouldn't really say I searched i tout. I like good old fashion DTC to be honest. But if you get some good repeatable WS business, it CERTAINLY adds more consistency and increases total revenue!
@@BlackTieBarn Wow that's really interesting actually! my DTC sales have been struggling lately :( even if I can get damn near 1m views on a vid it doesn't guarantee sales. Sometimes the lower viewed content can be the best for conversion haha
Thank you so much for this video. I am still in the researching/planning stages while learning to create with wax. My plan is to start with crafts shows/markets to get my name out there. My question is, should I have a website in place before doing markets so that ppl have a place to go to buy more products if they like what they bought at the craft show? Thank you so much for all your helpful videos 😊
It's good to have some other option for a place to buy more, yes. But if you don't want to deal with hassle of a full website you could use etsy, FB or IG as well
Would you possible be able to explain the best way you would go about getting wholesale accounts..? Like what places to pick and why? Should I approach businesses that want to use my products directly or businesses that would like to resell my products just not exactly sure.. Thank you for any feedback:)
I'd suggest making a wholesale kit first. List out your products, pricing, minimum orders etc. Recommended selling price and so on. Drop it off with a couple samples. Then follow up about a week later. Up to you on which ones you want to work with after that. :)
Hi Wade I am wanting to make candles and hopefully start a business.. I got on you tube and thus found you and others. @@marylouramos6353 No worries at all... I know with all the information outlets out there, it can get confusing. Especially if newer to any of the platforms. Glad you are here! :)
@@BlackTieBarn there is so much to learn about candle making. Not really sure where to start. I’m going to go to your supply list and continue to watch your teachings on candle making etc and then just do it as Niki says😃
I have not. At least yet. Not really my thing as they are time consuming and don't sell like regular candles. So just not part of my current business model (at least at this time). Sorry. :/ But may be something I do in the future. :)
Do you have a video where you talk about the wax you use for your candles I've been wondering I need a new wax mine has an amazing cold throw but a terrible hot throw and I'm always interested in what other candle makers use
Hey! I mention a few thst I Iike and show using them in various videos. I also have a video about a year ago comparing wax types. Will be doing another in the next month or so. If you go to my videos section here on the channel. There should be a search option. Search "wax" or making candles. I use a lot but there are a few I go into more detail on so far. :) You may look into pb600. I use that a lot. :)
Sorry to hear that. What are you doing in terms of marketing, engagement. Any ads? It takes one of two things to build up thr sales and revenue. Time or money. Money speeds things up a lot by running Google and Facebook ads.
@@BlackTieBarn Hi, thanks for replying. I have tried Instagram Adds and Google adds, plus a website I have, and also I do spiritual fayres and nothing. I don't understand why. 😕
I have been making lotion and candles for a couple of years but only for myself. I can not break that fear barrier to do what I really want to do and go public with my craft. I have never run a business and the thought of it scares me to death yet at the same time that is really what I want to be doing. I can't even bring myself to do a craft fair for fear of judgment or criticism from others. Do you have any suggestions or pointers on how to overcome that initial fear? I truly do love keeping my hands busy with lotion and candle-making. Thank you for taking time out of your day to help me and others learn and grow with our passions.
Center the wicks you mean? I use a couple tools or templates just because it's easier and sometimes quicker. But I don't have any issues doing it myself. It's just harder to be exact.
Just curious, have you not looked into Amazon Handmade? I checked if you were on there, but it "seems" to be more reasonable than a standard Amazon commerce account. Curious to hear your thoughts, because if I was making hand crafts, I almost feel like it would be easier to send them my product and let them sell it for the fee lol
Can definitely be done.... my advice would be to keep it simple though. Pick a niche or theme. Focus on select scents for that choice. Keep your options to a minimum. Like one jar style 8 scents focus on branded label. 😉
I make candles, but they look like real dessert candles, they look amazing & they smell so good. I need help on how to get out there, & promote myself...
At $40 a candle you have to sell roughly 100 candles per day to get to $1M in revenue. If you set up your business the right way it should be more than possible.
@hi surprisingly...... lots of people and companies. Whole market for it on the luxury candle side. Particularly those focusing on home decor more than just scented candle
I decided to leave nursing and start a small candle business. I truely enjoy making candles. I only started a few months ago with pouring and 6 month ago doing research. I have done college jewelry making and numerous arts since high school, painting, pottery, wood crafting, quilt making ect. Candle making is the only art that feels like the perfect fit for me. For the last 6 months my whole world is all about candles. I even started making my own vessels. I struggle with the business side of things so I'm taking a small business start up course in a cpl days. I came across your videos and want to thank you for being so transparent with everything! I'm not looking to make tons of money in candles. I truely love making people happy and bringing happiness to them with a candle. I would be honored if you'd review my candles. That way I can see what areas I can improve. Thank You Shelley
I need help so bad I mad 16 candles and have all the stuff to make more but y? I'm not selling any I dont know how to start selling, my labels wont print..huh
Labels and printing really take some patience and practice. As far as selling...... you have to be very proactive. People don't know your business or products exist otherwise. FB, Instagram, word of mouth, drop off samples. Give promos and get deals. You HAVE to be willing to give stuff away early on to drum up business. Drop samples at local businesses snd promote online. Patience and persistence. :)
@@karenssutphin5085 No problem. The biggest takeaway is to be patient and persistent. It can take some time to start moving product and getting noticed. It did for me as well. Do some local shows, host candle parties at your house, drop off samples, start a facebook group with friends and family (allow them to invite others) and give good deals in the group. All of those should help get you going. :)
Not sure what you mean? As a subscriber you may have seen the community questions and comments on other videos asking if I made millions making candles. This was a fun video response to that. Explaining that, while I don't make a million I make a few hundred thousand and then a breakdown of the ways in which I do it. It wasn't intended to be click bait at all. It was a fun response to the community here on my channel. You can even see the title and thumbnail were posed as a question. That was intentional. I never post click bait stuff. I'm here for educating or informative content and casual entertainment at the same time (at least try). Sorry you didn't appreciate or like it though
In not sure sure where I was being passive aggressive at all. I apologize if something came across that way. But it wasn't intentional and I'm not sure where. :/ I always try to answer every question and comment...which is difficult with everything else I do. So sometimes my replies are shorter just due to how much time I have. But never try to be passive aggressive at all.

Genuinely enjoyed this video , it even more so kicked me into gear to keep myself motivated in order to continue to grow . Thank you for this amazing eye opening video 🍂
Np Leah!
Really good video ... and most importantly ... sincere information and delivery ... SUBSCRIBED!!
Thanks so much!
Such an inspiration! This is exactly what I needed! I always appreciate all your videos!
❤ Thanks!
I get so much inspiration from your videos!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. :)
🥰
i have learn some much from ur videos thank u
As always. You deliver with yet another video that helps. Especially with the part about just being able to do what you live, while making a profit and enough to live off of.
You're definitely inspiring me to also start my RUclips Journey, on top of everything else.
Glad to hear that? Ty so much and good luck to you

Thank you for another great video. The amount of work you put into your video is epic. Being a new candle maker myself. Thus video helped a lot. Thank you

Thank you. Mine is mainly shows and events now.

@@BlackTieBarn I'm trying to increase our web orders. Not easy

Very informative, thank you!

1st off, why am I watching you at 3:24am?! Why...as if I don't have to be up at 7:30am. Anywho...great video as usual, and thanks for sharing like you always do.💜
Hahaha! If it makes you feel better that was the time k was finishing the video up the previous night. 🤣
You're Awesome bro !
Lol. Thanks man
Excellent video
Thanks so much
I would love this as a job I don't need millions but if I can replace my current income doing candles etc... would be amazing
Thank you for breaking down the candle
biz with such precise details, I really appreciate it.
I appreciate what you share, all the around! Thank you...I have to ask for wax melts which wax do you use?
Oh I've used several I like.
Pillar of bliss, problend 650, blend of 4625 and either 6006 or 464
@@BlackTieBarn I've tried 6006, but it seems to me that the aroma doesn't last long as a melt...
I wish we had more people like you! What a breath of fresh air. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge! Rockstar Status!!
🥰❤ ty!
Cocoa butter cashmere
Sea salt & orchid
Oakmoss and Amber
Sandlewood Vanilla
Cashmere plum
White sage and Lavendar
Should I add a clean scent? Or would I be ok with these
I think those are great. I wish I got better throw out of oakmoss and amber as it's my favorite overall scent. I use it but it's less strong in candles compared to most my others. Where are you getting your oils from.
Thank you! Which would you prefer over Oakmoss & amber because I love that scent too! & Candle science and flaming candle
But if you don't want to deal with hassle of a full website you could use etsy, FB or IG as well
Thank you 😊
Would you possible be able to explain the best way you would go about getting wholesale accounts..? Like what places to pick and why? Should I approach businesses that want to use my products directly or businesses that would like to resell my products just not exactly sure.. Thank you for any feedback:)
I'd suggest making a wholesale kit first. List out your products, pricing, minimum orders etc. Recommended selling price and so on. Drop it off with a couple samples. Then follow up about a week later. Up to you on which ones you want to work with after that. :)
@@BlackTieBarn Ok great I'll get started on my wholesale kit first then. Thank you so much Wade!:) It's nerve racking but I got this:)
Thanks for this helpful video! I’m building a blog based site and once I get enough content I would like to send you traffic as part of my opt- in

Hi Wade I am wanting to make candles and hopefully start a business.. I got on you tube and thus found you and others. I am finding out the right way and right way in other words doing researching before I even ordering supplies making and testing! So you keep taking about your channel. Where do I find it!! Might be a silly question. Also thank you for sharing your wisdom. I still have several questions and sure I will get them answered .. thanks again!!
Hey Mary. This is the channel. Lol This is the channel with all the videos. You are on it. :)
Unless I am misunderstanding your question.

@@marylouramos6353 I am working on some other resources as well to help making the learning process easier. :)
Have you ever made the shaped candles, and if so how do you do it?
@@BlackTieBarn thank youuuu!
@@bam7227 of Course!
How do you find time for all the different revenue streams?
Poorly. 🤣 Haha. In all honesty, baby steps. Don't try to do all at once
I'm so about to give up on my candle business. I'm not making anything. Can't get customers. Very sad.
Sounds very cliche... but honestly, just get started. It's hard at first and nothing really helps other than experience and time (or a partner)
How do you center your wholesale candles and
Regular ones ? Do you
Purchase centering devices ? Are you just good at it without the devices ? Thanks
Center the wicks you mean? I use a couple tools or templates just because it's easier and sometimes quicker. But I don't have any issues doing it myself. It's just harder to be exact.
@@BlackTieBarn thank you 😊. Awesome videos . You are a millionaire in my eyes 👀
❤ thanks!
Hey I actually haven't because I simply don't have time right now. Also, the margins are tight. :/
What do you think about that type of business as side hustle during studying on university?
Can definitely be done.... my advice would be to keep it simple though. Pick a niche or theme. Focus on select scents for that choice. Keep your options to a minimum. Like one jar style 8 scents focus on branded label. 😉
@@BlackTieBarn Thank you, greetings from Poland :)
During a gold rush, sell shovels.
Yes yes!
I make candles, but they look like real dessert candles, they look amazing & they smell so good. I need help on how to get out there, & promote myself...
💯
At $40 a candle you have to sell roughly 100 candles per day to get to $1M in revenue. If you set up your business the right way it should be more than possible.
It certainly is!
Thank You
Shelley
I need help so bad I mad 16 candles and have all the stuff to make more but y? I'm not selling any I dont know how to start selling, my labels wont print..huh
Labels and printing really take some patience and practice. As far as selling...... you have to be very proactive. People don't know your business or products exist otherwise. FB, Instagram, word of mouth, drop off samples. Give promos and get deals. You HAVE to be willing to give stuff away early on to drum up business. Drop samples at local businesses snd promote online. Patience and persistence. :)
@@BlackTieBarn thank you for answering me, that was very kind of you
@@karenssutphin5085 No problem. :)
@@BlackTieBarn I will ty for the boost of confidence , Deeply Appreciated

Hey Kim. Shoot me an email to youtube@blacktiebarn.com and we'll go from there!
How come you never mention AMAZON? I mean it is too big not to mention whether you sell there or not.
I don't mention it simply because I don't sell on the so I felt don't have much useful info to share
It must be able to make a million or more otherwise its a hobby.
❤️
Because of the click bait title I will no longer watch this channel.
Why do passive aggressive on the person asking the question cause hesitation for people who wants to ask just saying
Hey there! Not sure what what your referring to
In not sure sure where I was being passive aggressive at all. I apologize if something came across that way. But it wasn't intentional and I'm not sure where. :/
I always try to answer every question and comment...which is difficult with everything else I do. So sometimes my replies are shorter just due to how much time I have. But never try to be passive aggressive at all.
I did not see this video coming! Mind.Freaking.Blown. 🤯 Content I didn’t know I needed, but grateful for. Great timing and so thankful for you, all the videos and the work that you put in helping me (and sure others blah blah blah…😂😆.) 🖤
