    Hey team, apart from the knobs not matching the actual values, do the compressors 1) sound good? and 2) do they do a reasonable job of emulating the targeted models?

    The artifacts from the aliasing were -150dB! You are not going to hear that, and if you boosted an audio file until you could hear that then the signal would be ruined anyway. Every company should be held accountable for their products. If its good, they deserve credit, if its bad, let them know as well. TBTech has done some weird stuff with their Kirchhoff Eq with the ''analog'' eq emulations and on this one again. Regarding Fabfilter , I am an avid PRO-Q3 user but I do think FabFilter needs to step up by now and introduce new features. For instance I use Eventide's Spit EQ a lot as well these days because of the split functionality and usually wil keep using it on a track instead of Pro-Q3 when I need it and normal EQ as well.

    • @bigstewdio
      @bigstewdio 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@whitenoisestudio I wasn't really tempted by the Kirchoff tbh, the Pro Q3 does pretty much everything I need. I do have the split eq (but rarely use it) but the other eq that I use along with Pro Q3 is the Pulsar 8200. Perhaps it's because of the parallel processing but it does something different to the Pro Q3 and I find it better for shaping. It also has a great de-esser which I'm starting to use more and more (tip: hold the shift key when changing frequency on the de-esser to isolate the band).
      I'm not quite such a fanboy of the Pro C2 and think there are several obvious improvements that could be made. Firstly, the auto gain which doesn't really work well enough but mainly the documentation of the different styles. I know it's about ears not eyes but my eyes would like to see an explanation from FF about what the different styles do and how they are meant to affect the audio signal. I genuinely haven't found any proper explanation, even from Dan Worrall, and it shouldn't be a secret.

    • @whitenoisestudio
      @whitenoisestudio  8 месяцев назад

      Pulsar 8200 is excellent, no doubt about that. Parallel EQ is pretty sweet, the main difference is how each band influences or doesnt influence eachother. Your comment actually inspired me to do a video about that.
      Split EQ is great when you want to change sustain or transients on a specific area on an audio track. Great to reduce for instance reduce boominess without losing thump.
      I dont use Pro-C2 that often. I find that I can work better with other compressors, like the elysia mpressor plugin or adptr's sculpt. I often also grab the emulations of the wel known classic ( 1176, la2a etc.)

  • @DerekPower
    @DerekPower 8 месяцев назад +3

    Very good and very fair points. I was thinking during your review that this is a case where "gain compensation" could be a useful option when evaluating the different compressors if you want to audition characteristics and such. But yes, this does need to be ironed out in some kind of update.
    That aside, this does have the potential of being like an alternative Pro-C2 much like how the Kirchhoff EQ is an alternative Pro-Q3. Funny enough, that also has some issues as it creates the impression that they emulated the THD as well as the curves. (AFAIK, it was just the curves). I can appreciate ambitious ideas, but I've found that they have to work. And maybe this was a case of aiming too high and hitting the roof on the way.

      The biggest issue for me is the lack of clarity on what is actually happening and the wrong info on the plugin itself.
      If TBTech would have simply made that matching, there wouldn't be a real issue at all, but like this?
      And yeah, you're right on Kirchoff; how they handled those ''analog eqs'' made me somewhat suspicious for this plugin.

    I really think you are over-concentrating on the visuals/numbers. As you said yourself, a strength here is the ability to quickly survey through different compressor options; but when you find the one you like best that is when to start fine tuning. The fact a mastering compressor sounds odd with a 4:1 ratio isn't that surprising.

    • @whitenoisestudio
      @whitenoisestudio  7 месяцев назад

      No I’m not. The fact is that it’s implied that there are many differences between compressors while in reality it’s almost just different settings.
      It falls in the same category as making a plugin 0,5dB louder by default- it makes people think it sounds better.
      Why would you hide that and give false info, because that is what happens.
      The solution is really simple: just show what the real attack and release times are, ditto with thresholds and ratios.
      If they would have done that, all would be good.

    I want a nice (pref visual) compressor that doesn't click at the lower attack rates. I always seem to run into that issue, even when the compressor is dialed in at a 0.00 ms attack. This is the first one that actually has anti-click functionality built in, which is great. I hope the others are going to follow that trend, or I might just have to put aside some money for this one.

    • @whitenoisestudio

      My logic behind this is that you want the fastest attack and compressors arent build for that, they always leave a snap which is very much wanted by a lot of users. You seem to want to tame the transient completely and that's where a limiter will do exactly what you need. You can always use a compressor in combo with a limiter to sculpt the sound more - experiment with a limiter before or after that compressor.

      @@whitenoisestudio ok, i did see huge difference in mastering style between Cenozoix and Pro C2 in plugin doctor.
      Cenozoix starts compressing a little slower after touching -12.5db,that's weird.
      BTW,I also saw a lot weird things about compressors in plugin doctor long ago.
      Many do not show the true attack and release time at all. Many start compressing before the exact seting threshold number.
      I believe Cennozoix is not the only one.
      The oversampling part suprised me.Thanks for that.
      I payed for almost every product of TB Tech. And I did criticize TB Tech for a lot of years.

      But finally they fix them one by one.
      Cenozoix is the only one I did not complain,even now I know the oversampling problem and the mastering problem.

      I was using it for a few mixes, I like the analog curves for tonal shaping, but I really dislike what it does to a kick drum, completely destroys the low end and makes it sound too "clicky". Now you can compansate for the loss of low end by adding in the N style analog flavor which has a low end bump, but it begs to question why should I have to resort to that. Also, the 500ms maximum release is too short for practical purposses, especially when the tempo of the song is slower than 100bpm and I am using a coresponding long release to push something back in the mix, 500ms is too fast for that. Yes you do have a 1s release in the Fet model but it behaves completely different. Some people were claiming that the release timing is not what the numbers represent, meaning it has a much longer release than what is stated, but I haven't tested out that, nor will I, I'm just about given up on that comp. Their Model N channel strip however is something unbelievably good

    Truth is you can do everything you need to make your music sound good with the stock plugins in any daw, if it doesn't... your time and money is much better spent doing comprehensive courses in eq, compression and delay/reverb.
    If you still want a complete setup with both coloring and comfort options I would simply get the following:

    2. Soundtoys bundle for creative effects

      You know as I do. If you spend time grinding to really understand basic eq and compression in a way where you end up being able to utilize them to do actual conscious decisions that matters instead of just noodling about, that's how you get a good mix. Not these romanticized ideas.
      I'm getting "audiophile" community vibes. Buying speaker cables costing 5000$ per meter that are specially designed to go back in time into the head of the mixing engineer and change the properties of the mix so what YOU want to hear comes to the forefront... or you just spent insane amounts of money for nothing and now your brain has to compensate by actually bringing that sound forward in your mind.
