- Using free apps to 3d scan and mock up motor and transmission the easy way and using my Fastcut Cnc plasma table
In this video I use polycam app to 3d scan a Flathead Harley motor and a Triumph transmission to line them up to each other.
This is a trick I’ve been using to speed the process, there is no need to work with the heavy awkwardly shaped components that are difficult to move around and measure.
With this process I can line everything up in an easy to use cad program that I use on my iPad ( Shaper3d ) and transfer the dfx files to my Fastcut plasma table.
This is incredibly easy to learn and do. This technique has sped up production dramatically and has changed the way I do things . I didn’t want to spend the time showing how each app works as I feel that there are hundreds of videos out there that you can watch to learn that part. You’ll have to invest that time into yourself, but I couldn’t recommend it enough.
The apps I use in this video are Polycam for the 3d scans, Nomad sculpt to crop the scan (this is probably not necessary but I found it the easiest to use to crop and transfer to shaper3d) and Shaper3D to draw and design everything. All of these are free to use but are limited. I pay for shaper3d because I have found it extremely beneficial to my shop but the rest I use the free versions. My plasma Table is FASTCUT CNC i cannot say enough good things about this machine it has been a game changer.
All of this stuff takes some time to learn but once you learn it the amount of time you save is extremely worth the time you put into it.
