Karl has a conception of technology, that David Krakauer calls "competitive" cognitive artifacts in contrast to "complementary" ones. The former "compete" with regular (procedural) knowledge of our brain. So while acquiring and learning to use a technology can make you more effective in solving a specific problem, you are becoming more dependent on them as well and possibly lose/forget some of the capabilities that you had before to solve the same problem. Unfortunately complementary cognitive artifacts which expand your existing cognitive abilities rather than replacing them seem to be quite rare... So that's the wordy, theoretical version of what Karl knows intuitively.
Exactly. For example my spelling is worse now than it was when I was in highschool and this is due to spell check and autocorrect doing all the work for me now. I never have to think and work out spellings for myself. When I was young all my work was hand written and I made fewer grammatical or spelling errors than I would hand writing today. Because I'm so used to the work all being done for me now. Those parts of my brain aren't being used anymore. It's exactly the same if you have Google inside your head. You'll never have to think and work out a problem for yourself just see the solution flash before your eyes. Your own ability to think will diminish.

Thanks, I appreciate it! Well there's 13 episodes per season, so I split each season into 2 parts (6 episodes in one, 7 in another). Since this was Part 4, this was the second part of season 2, so there was 7 episodes with a total runtime of about 3 hours to cut down to 1 hour 45 minutes...so it takes about a day to cut it down that much, but that might just be because I have trouble deciding which bits are really the best bits - Karl is hard to condense.
I like how Karl always goes back to the frisbee as if it was a recent invention, it was invented back in the mid-late 1800s. Also it was invented by university students, so technically there were top minds working on it
Was this 2010 when he predicted VR glasses? And they're falling out laughing. VR glasses and helmets were in Marvel comics at least a decade (or 2) before whatever year this was and I never thought it would be a real thing. Karl conceptualize the whole thing there with no prior frame of reference. Knocked it out of the park. Reminds me of Michael Keaton's character in Ron Howard's Night Shift; an "Idea Man". He who laughs last, laughs best.
+BFKC it’s not being dense, it’s simply that despite him not being particularly articulate or book smart. He does often have a common sense about what he says that Ricky can’t always get his head around. Obviously most of the things he says sound ridiculous coming out of his mouth but can still be heavily related to on a human level. Also there are other times when Ricky takes the logical approach to far by saying something’s ridiculous, when years into the future turns out Karl has predicted something that actually happened. Just as one example look at when Ricky was asking Karl about his movie pitches and then keeps going on about everything he says being stupid and illogical without himself grasping the concept that movies are usually meant to be exactly that. That’s just one example of dozens.
Man, they have to get Karl on QI! And the thing about VR glasses is actually a good one. If Charlie Brooker came up with it, it would have made a good Black Mirror episode. And his ideas about the flotation tank were bang on.

It was such a good decision to subscribe to you. These compilations are really fucking awesome. How long do these take to make?
Thanks, I appreciate it! Well there's 13 episodes per season, so I split each season into 2 parts (6 episodes in one, 7 in another). Since this was Part 4, this was the second part of season 2, so there was 7 episodes with a total runtime of about 3 hours to cut down to 1 hour 45 minutes...so it takes about a day to cut it down that much, but that might just be because I have trouble deciding which bits are really the best bits - Karl is hard to condense.
It’s supposed to be relaxing,
But Karl is 100% correct in all his takes and Ricky/Steven, the rich bubble Londoners just laugh at him.
Clever the way they added the animation after they started with the podcasts... evolution is a wonderful thing
Karl empathizing with the slug
I feel asleep watching two of these and i didnt know til these morning, im glad i discovered this
I love these podcasts but I think it's even funnier wth the cartoons added to it.Who does these cartoons as they're so on point😂.
I like how Karl always goes back to the frisbee as if it was a recent invention, it was invented back in the mid-late 1800s. Also it was invented by university students, so technically there were top minds working on it
Right?! Weren't they tossing Frisbee brand pie tins about?
"Part 4 of 6" 4 years later still no part 6 or even 5
Your animations are honestly amazing! I watched the 4 parts in one stretch. Thanks a lot, keep on making them :D
Nationalmuse The animations were made by HBO, not the uploader.
Nationalmuse he just puts together the best bits from the show, it's 'The Ricky Gervais Show'
Karl is Britain's greatest treasure
Was this 2010 when he predicted VR glasses? And they're falling out laughing. VR glasses and helmets were in Marvel comics at least a decade (or 2) before whatever year this was and I never thought it would be a real thing. Karl conceptualize the whole thing there with no prior frame of reference. Knocked it out of the park. Reminds me of Michael Keaton's character in Ron Howard's Night Shift; an "Idea Man". He who laughs last, laughs best.
There are times when Ricky sounds more ignorant than Karl.
David Wood many times, and it's much worse because Ricky thinks himself a genius. Sounds like a pretentious drip.
Karl has a certain "innocence" to him that I think allows him to get away with saying some of the more dafter things he says. Not so much with Ricky
No
Those are the times you are too dense yourself.
This guy predicted VR goggles 🤯🤯🤯
Karl actually half predicted VR and Meal supplements 😂
The horse has been a regular at the bar for ages 🤣🤣
Smoothies. He said we’d blend food.....we do! Lol! 😂
17:00. Karl has a point; I'm watching this on my phone and my little finger isn't helping out.
I love Karl just building the animal he wants to be and live adapting it to survive every situation
Subbed.
Man, they have to get Karl on QI! And the thing about VR glasses is actually a good one. If Charlie Brooker came up with it, it would have made a good Black Mirror episode. And his ideas about the flotation tank were bang on.
The A-Z petrol station part is perfect
This video helped me understand that UK healthcare is absolute rubbish.
Why is it so easy for me to imagine Ricky Gervais as a child, pulling the legs off an ant, Steve Merchant cheering him on, while they both laugh maniacally?
He loves animals. What are u on about??
Karl Predicted the Apple Vision Pro 12 years before it was invented. Man is a genius
"How's his breath"
"Fuckin lovely but he's been sick all over the cuntin place"
Why’s everyone complaining about the audio. Seems fine to me
SmellsLikeKet bit quiet
Me too - no problem. Ricky’s laugh is as loud as usual.
His prefiction about the glasses aged perfectly considering how good v.r is now
🤔"I've always wanted to kick a duck up de arse !! " 😂😂😂😂😂😂
#karlforpresident 😍
Karl predicting augmented reality and Ricky shooting is down is hilarious
