I played with Chuck when I was in college. That horn, my friends, is a flugelhorn, and Chuck is the acknowledged master of it. He has had a helluva career, with this being his biggest hit, but some other tracks of his that stand out are "Land Of Make Believe," "Hill Where The Lord Hides" (the live version!), and one that he recorded for the ABC network coverage of the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid, NY, called "Give It All You Got." He's really brilliant, and just a super nice guy.

Chuck came to play "Hill Where The Lord Hides" with our marching band at Western Michigan University, and he peeked in on my applied music lesson with our high brass TA, whose name escapes me at the moment. If you love this, you MUST listen to another great from that era, George Benson (jazz guitarist). He's had many hits since on the pop charts, but the song "Breezin'" put him on the map. "This Masquerade " is a standard jazz classic, that everybody who listened to the radio back then, knows 💜💜💜

His "On Broadway," a remake of the old Drifters hit from the 1950s, is a standout as well. He's got a few great ones: "Give Me The Night," "Turn Your Love Around," "Breezin'"... just so many good tracks!
Another in this groove would be Al Jarreau. He has a live version of "Take Five" that is just plain awesome, but "Mornin'," "We're In This Love Together," "Boogie Down," and "Moonlighting" are all great, too.

Around 1983, I was working in the buying office of a big department store chain that had a great record department. One day we were all sitting there in our cubicles in this big open room, when the record buyers walked in accompanied by this guy in a hat, holding a flugelhorn. I immediately recognized who it was -- he was making a personal appearance in one of the nearby stores that day. They walked over to their department's cubicles, and the next thing we knew Chuck stood up and started playing this song. What a treat that was for the office!

A few years ago, I took my older kids to Jazz Alley in Seattle. Chuck Mangione was the headliner. That venue is famous for being intimate, and for giving ticket holders access for autographs between shows. Chuck was a fantastically generous artist. My kids had NO IDEA they were trading lame kid jokes with a massive artist. He signed CDs for our nieces. I was starstruck. Our kids were clueless. Oh, wow! You just sparked a ton of old memories for me, too, LoRita! I took every vocal music class I could in high school. I remember sitting with classmates discussing Alpert's albums and how cool we all thought that he started his own label, A&M Records. That was something unheard of in those days; a musician starting his own label. Great days for me, 'cause every time The Beatles put out a new album, my best friend and I spent every cent we had buying the LP and heading to his bedroom to use his little stereo system. We spent whole Saturday afternoons dissecting every tune, trying decide what they were trying to tell us and to articulate why these songs were magic.

Chuck Mangione is a Jazz musician. He has played the flugelhorn and trumpet. Mangione started out his music career in 1960. He also played, recorded, and toured with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers during the 1960s. Then he branched out on his own, and recorded numerous albums, and won two Grammy Awards for his recordings. Chuck Mangione did some voiceover work for the animated FOX television series, "King Of The Hill". Mangione retired from the music industry in 2010, after a 50-year career. Chuck Mangione is 81 years old.
"Feels So Good" was a HUGE hit for Chuck Mangione in 1977, during the Disco Era. It got A LOT of airplay on Rock, Pop, and Jazz/Classical music radio stations at that time. This Jazz instrumental appealed to music fans of all ages, races, and genders. I believe that this recording was the last instrumental recording with a horn instrument to have a major impact on the music charts in the United States.

As far as other songs, hoo-boy, there's a lot! Bellavia, Hill Where The Lord Hides, Chase the Clouds Away, and much, much more! I've listened to this song a whole lot while I was a teenager in the later mid 70's!
    Great musician!

“Cliffs of Dover” by Eric Johnson is the next instrumental you should do. Jay will probably put him in his top 5 immediately.

Yes, back in the day, instrumentals charted and some of them were big hits. FEELS SO GOOD/Chuck Mangione charted at #4 (Billboard Hot 100) in 1978. Also check out his 1980 hit, GIVE IT ALL YOU GOT/Chuck Mangione. He is an awesome flugelhorn player. Other great instrumentals are RISE/Herb Alpert, MORNING DANCE/Spyro Gyra, MIAMI VICE THEME/Jan Hammer. There are many more.

He is an amazing jazz musician. I first heard his music song when I was very young, and it really sparked my interest in jazz. He has a huge catalog of great hits. The best Flugehorn player on the planet.

I am so glad you got to this one! Instrumental pieces were still popular in the 70's and 80's. Love the lyrics and the singers, but these kind of jams were special.

    It's a Flugelhorn.
If you're going to be getting into Smooth Jazz, PLEASE do some Grover Washington Jr. Anything from the Albums "Winelight", or ""Come Morning". LOVE being a part of the RSR Family. ♥️💞💝💖

Performed to this (baton twirling/dancing) with my high school marching band back in the day. Our director was a big fan of Chuck M's. Thx for the memories. ... Class of '80!

Wow, glad to see you guys give this one a listen. This played constantly on the radio all the time back in the day! It always makes me feel so good! You also must listen to the longer version where it starts of really peaceful and slow before it picks up where you started listening to it in this version.

I love this sound! Takes me back to being a kid in the 70's. Call me a TV theme nerd, but I love alot of the musical TV themes from that era, especially the American TV programs.

Those years had the best tv themes! WKRP In Cincinnati and Mary Tyler Moore were two of my favorites.
This song takes me back to spending summers at Six Flags.

@@amyk9175 Yes they were great weren't they?! I'm a Kiwi & we used to have alot of the American sitcoms shown on TV here (we only had 2 channels back then). Mary Tyler Moore, WKRP, Three's Company, The Love Boat, Eight is Enough, Fantasty Island, The Greatest American Hero & lots of others I've probably forgotten but would likely remember as soon as I heard the theme music! Oh, those were the days (sigh)...
