Establishing residency in Florida for asset protection purposes requires an intent by an individual to establish permanent residency in a Florida home. For most purposes, only Florida residents can take advantage of Florida asset protection laws. For tax purposes, the state from which the person lived previously may impose requirements on whether the person is free from taxation of the former state.

I've recently moved to Florida, my dad passed away in Louisiana. It's been almost 5 years. I hadn't tried to take things from my stepmother because I thought she'd distribute stuff to my half bros and I. Will those assets be protected when I get my driver's license, I really don't know what to do in this situation. Should have taken her to court when I was in Louisiana.
What exactly is meant by asset protection? I think of insurance...its not clear to me how being a Florida resident protects assets? Inheritance taxes? What am I missing?
