If you were gonna retouch all the photos before uploading, the better phones probably have the advantage. But uploading straight from the camera and this is what happens.

Don't blame the compression cause poco's and blackberry's image are compressed too. So that just can't be it. Color variation is more viable.

So in other words: if you are posting your photos on social media, the quality of your camera means nothing.
Wasn't it clear the whole time?
It may seem like an obscure technicality but what this is really pointing out more than anything is that Exposure Metering is one of the most important aspects of the camera, and really this is THE most fundamental skill in Photography. Get the exposure right for the photo.
It's almost like we're seeing Smartphones just start to learn what it means to be a "good photographer".
Apple got a good "Landscape" photo, but a bad "Portrait". The other cameras are probably stuck using Portrait type processing on all photos, not good overall, but they fit the content of the contest.
The most surprising thing here is you'd expect Apple and Samsung to have more "content aware" processing, this should not have been an issue.
The cheaper phones legitimately took "The Best Photo" because their style of processing matched the content.
like he said an older Samsung would have probably won because they take social media read photos with the high level of colour saturation back then enthusiast have bashed samsung for this and it turns out that this is what your average person like a bright colorful photo omitting all the finer details enthusiast normally go for .. the results make a whole lot of sense because at the end of the day if you are a heavy social media person you look at these types of photo on a daily basis mostly with filters anyway..
It means nothing IF you don't edit them later. The advantage of "better" cameras are that they are able to capture much more detailed that can be used later in the editing process.

I prefer the look of the camera quality on the iPhone. Will I EVER get an iPhone? NEVER in my life. I can't justify that I can build up to 2 desktop PCs for the cost of an iPhone XS. I also like the GS9's camera and the Pixel. I won't even spend that much on a phone either. I am almost positive that most people prefer a phone that doesn't do RAW style photos. I, like a lot of people like natural looking images and I don't even edit photos. You are probably glad the Pocaphone and Mate 20 did well because they are cheap phones "sticking it to the men" (Apple and Samsung being the men). That is not the case here. Nobody stuck it to Apple or Samsung. People just prefer the post processing that occur in lower end cameras stock settings. Had Marcus turned on some of the enhancement settings on the iPhone or the Galaxy or the Pixel or the V40 that are not found on some of the other phones, the story would be different.

If you judge the final photos between Pocofone and Mate 20 Pro, I think the Pocofone had a way better detailed image, just look at grass, the hay, the rust on the truck rims, the sky and the tress near the wall.

I have a bb and back camera is really good but then picture processing sucks and front camera as well.. Physical keyboard is really outstanding all u do is press 1 key to open a app so convenient and battery lasts for 2 days atleast .. Still don't buy it they are like 10 years behind when it comes to OS and processing .. They need to focus on software end but instead they are focusing on design.. 😑 its almost 2019 and my phone still crashes and just hangs I mean this issue was fixed in 2014 ..

I think what we can take away from this test is that if you're just going to be sharing your photos on social media, it really doesn't matter what phone camera you have.

I have to agree!! Triggered people would think that its ‘because she’s a girl’ but no.... she is just ‘basic’ when it comes to actual important in depth information. I like Lisa Gade from Mobile Tech Reviews, she has amazing detailed reviews. I recently subscribed to iJustine cause of Dave 2D’s recommendation but unsubscribed immediately cause she added absolutely nothing in terms of meaningful info! Now there are people who like her content and that’s completely okay.. imo No!

Pocophone was made for Indian market by Xiaomi where fair skin is considered more beautiful and skin whitening creams fly of supermarket shelves faster than bread or milk. So Xiaomi must have put algorithm in camera to make dark people look brighter and beautiful......

Meh, not much effort really. Could've been done in a much better way with more hard work. This is just placing pictures side by side, releasing on the internet, and letting your fans do the voting. It's a very inaccurate way to do it and gets you quick results but awful accuracy, even when you consider twitter compression. I expected a lot more thorough comparison spanning over several weeks with a completely different format and then put into a pivot table and released to the public. This video should've instead been a summary of the table. This is a completely unprofessional way of doing it but I guess the general public won't care as long as they can get a result that's less than 20% accurate. The best way I'd have done it is made short google form surveys released every day slowly accumulating the data and adding it to a pivot table. Not just taking popular vote, but amount of votes in total, and doing tests of the same phone's photo with different phones, like I with J and E and K, taking into account the total votes of each phone on which comparison and finding out which phone won against the most amount of other phones and by how much, why people chose that picture and do that on every different location of the photo taken.

And the outright crushing of the so called 'big boys' phones. However, when he mentioned contrast, especially as a Black man, I knew exactly what he meant. Those phones which took the brightest pictures always look better on Insta or Twitter because the detail means nothing on a small screen, only if you can see the image clearly.

Yeah but I think the Pixel's photos are objectively better than the F1's due to high-end processing on Google's part. This camera comparison doesn't really help either case because, as Marques explained, the better overall image did not always win.

Haha especially Instagram they need to overhaul the whole photo system. phone cameras are getting so good and will only get better .. id suggest an option while uploading a photo to upload it in full detail or the down sampled version .cause data restrictions, also in app when scrolling through the time line u would see the down sampled version but with a small water mark on the side if it was uploaded in HD so that u can open it and see it in full resolution ... Personally they should perfect the photo game before venturing into insta tv cause nobody uses that, well I don't id prefer seeing and uploading HD images seeing as its an image app

Look best on social media, because of shitty instagram photo processing. Comparing photos on such a platform makes really good cameras a disservice. And generally people like seeing more saturated and blown out photos. More difficult is to make a photo that is actually close to the original scene.

i bought my poco 2 weeks ago and i never had any illusions about its cam capabilities but HOLY CRAP i wasnt expecting that!!!!! basically, the compression of soc apps makes cam quality secondary at best from what it seems.. excellent idea to do this test tho!!

I loved this test. I almost always picked the one with less votes (better phone according to this test) and I still love this result. It shows that people don’t really know what they want out of a phone and that how they use it is actually what determines which they should get (and price).

Zack Vogel well, darker skin tones exist so..... these are the results. Had it been someone of a lighter skin tone, would you take a contrarian stance for the lack of a darker skin toned subject?
Yeah kinda disapointed in this test because I owned most of these phones (I work in Telecom) and the iPhone XS take much better pictures than lot of these craps especially the poco.

Entertaining on so many levels, as well as informative and also somewhat eye-opening towards the hypes, the 1000$ phones and all the self-proclaimed 'experts'... You can tell how much work went into this one, but as always with you it does pay out to the latter, if such a video is the outcome! Love it!
