In 22 years Jason has NEVER shit on his former band. Solid man right there.
Even if he wanted to, which he seems genuine and don't think that's the case, it's still in his best interest to promote Metallica since he still gets checks from them
@@steelisreal4313 no he doesn't. Bad words can't take away his song writing credits.
@@steelisreal4313 🙄
Video of the San Francisco reunion was cool. It proves Jason was THEE BASS PLAYER for Metallica. It will never be the same without him.
1:33:55 "we are business partners for life (...) and I'm only gonna ever say good things about them".
Not saying that Jason is not a good guy, it seems he is. But this part is just business.
Jason used to get his haircut at a barber shop in walnut creek that my family friend owned. Family friend told Jason that I was a huge fan, so Jason gave him a signed Echobrain demo along with the new Voivod cd that he was on at the time. This was over 20 years ago and I still have it. Super cool gesture he went out of his way for someone he didnt even know.. Jason is the man!
Jason is beyond keep that’s for sure
😅8
Yea ok
Which barber shop?
@@stefanosoderi4152 regardless Jason is a real dude who doesn’t let his fame get to his head.
I've seen Metallica live with Cliff, with Jason, and with Robert. Each bring something unique to the band. But to me, Metallica will always be James, Lars, Kirk, and Jason.
Trujillo doesn't fit the band. Period
@@maccatavares I've seen him live with them several times, and I'd have to say I agree. Not knocking him as a bass player, but he seems like he belongs in a different band when I see them peform together onstage. It's not as cohesive. There's no chemistry between him and the rest of the band. I didn't see that with Cliff and Jason. And I remember the bass tryouts when they released video of the open auditions. I was surprised by the choice.
@@laurettelaliberte8864 You're right. Sad but true
Yup
@@maccatavares Bands are often finding a person they get a long with instead of persons that fit in.
Same for vocalists, but also because they need a vocal that doesn't lose his voice or breath after only 30 minutes live. *cough*Axl Rose*cough*.
Dean and Jason absolutely demolishing Lars haters was gold.
Thank you
finally someone competent did it👍👍👍
absolutely loved it!!
People who at least have some basic understanding of music know that lars is a great musician.
lars sucks 😂
28:10 “I don’t know him as a sober person” line hits hard and is relatable
“It took me 15 years to come down from 15 years.” Wild stuff
Loved that quite
Coming down is the hardest thing, let us always be free in what we choose or not to choose.
In 1993 my brother graduated high school and got into a HUGE drunken fight with our dad. The next day he joined the Navy and left without telling our folks goodbye. He was gone for over a year without even a phone call until one day in June of '94 he shows up with 2 tickets to see Metallica; me and him. He was 19. I was 11. He kept asking random girls to flash me. It was an awesome night and I've been a fan ever since.
Of Metallica? Or breasts?

There was girls at a Metallica show?
Jason is 60! I would never guess that. I hope I’m as vibrant and filled with energy he is when I’m at that age. 🤘
Maybe because he quit Metallica? Haha
Hair dye too
@@whitebread940James has a lot of demons, for good reason too. But those demons took their toll. Jason nowadays looks and sounds 15 years younger than Hetfield.
Money does that……
You're acting like people are geriatric at that age or something. 60 isn't even old.
I love all era of metallica but my favorite is with jason. His energy was awesome
Me too
Its crazy because Jason was able to be just as amazing as James during what many consider James's peak years.
It's hard to pick a favorite era for me. Different albums, different kinds of live performances, different attitudes.
Metallica always had killer bassists.
The best Metallica was Jason Era.. No one could ever beat those live shows, the energy was crazy.. Never mind the Bass playing, Jason Vocals put an edge on Metallica that they never had before and never will again.. I am actually surprised that James, Lars and Kirk have not begged him to come back because they clearly need him to top anything that they have ever done before
I totally agree..especially for us 40 somethings the jason Era was metallica. I don't think they would ever beg him to rejoin though..they're fine with Rob and far too proud.. they have absolutely no reason to do that. What they always needed was a bass to follow and comply with their vision..
Jason brought it. Every damn time. I saw them in 97, 2000 with Jason. Ferocious. Saw them twice with Rob. Yeah. He’s amazing playing wise… but god damn… Jason brought a presence. Lived it. Was there for us. Would make eye contact with the fans and smile and point. Made you feel important. And the band CRUSHED.
Dean goes deep. Knows the gear. Better than any guitar interviewer.
He’s a pick player tho that sux
@@kickingxri , So is Geddy Lee, Paul McCartneyand loads of other top name bassists. To me the pick has more attack and sounds better with Metal
“I don’t know him as a sober person”- Jason about Hetfield. Mind blowing!
I’ve seen probably every Metallica interview over the years and this one has to be one of the best. Phenomenal.
thank you
check out my Hammett interview also
Agree. Great interview!
@Duty and Accountability Media 👍
THIS IS NEWSTED
I stopped being a hardcore fan of Metallica when Jason was no longer in the Band.
Jason Newsted musical legend.
Dido
They started to suck after 90s anyway.
Jason is such an important part of Metallica. He had the most insanely large shoes to fill and somehow did it on his own and in his own way and ultimately became a perfect fit for Metallica. In particular live. I really love his era of the band. Thanks Dean this is almost too good to be true!!!!!!!
thank you
@@deandelray no problem. Been following these for a long time now!!
@@RichardFriendartist I became a fan of Jason's when they headlined Lollapalooza. My GF had an asthma attack at the end of Soundgarden's set, & the EMT's brough us backstage because it was the closest area to treat her. We watched Metallica from backstage/sides & Jason was like a freakin' Tasmanian Devil! As I was watching him, I was like, "These people came to see Metallica as a whole, but Jason IS the show & energy that's keeping that crowd fired up!" Plus, he's got such a MEATY tone that just makes everything HEAVY!
Jason was the least important part of Metallica
@@Gcssdvnkloiutesc not for real fans
Jason getting that old look back! go full circle and get the undercut too! bad ass!
Jason taking all the Lars haters to school was so awesome to hear. I've always been a fan and have continued to be a fan of his long after Metallica. 🤘🏽😎🤘🏽
Jason is pure gold. I don’t think that he knows how much we all love and miss him. Thanks for this awesome interview, Dean. So great to hear his perspective on the history of Metallica. ❤
Very true!
He definitely knows how much we love him. That's why whatever he does, he has actual intention behind it. His love for us is shown in his art, both musically and otherwise,
Dude, i'm only half an hour in as i write this, but thank you so much for this interview! Even 20 years later, Jason is still my favorite member of Metallica. Nothing has replaced his backing vocals, lead vocals, energy, and style of playing. I will forever miss him up on stage with those dudes and they are still my favorite band without question, but man... they did Jason so wrong.
10,000% agree.
I really enjoyed Jason as a live performer, but that's really where it started and stopped for him in the band. He was a talented hired gun... if he could do it all over, i bet he stays in the band.
Absolutely! They went too far with the hazing.
@@CPAJayhawk sadly, you're right. He never got the respect he deserved 😔
I totally agree, Jason’s energy was something they can never replace and it shows majorly in Metallica live shows and the sound of the past few years desperately needs that crunchy bass thumping sound that different than Robert
Metallica fans miss you Jason. I still love and support the band to this day, but for me it was never the same after Newstead left.

Im 49 now, First big show Damage Justice tour 89, Jason was / is great. Thanks Dean!

They lost something truly magical when Jason left. Wish he was still there.
Jason is awesome. I was 10 when Cliff died and was really into Master. Jason came on the scene and I had my hair cut like him. He is a killer player and super nice guy!
#Newstallica forever!
By hair cut like him, do you mean you had long hair and no hair cut at all?
Jason's reaction to just the mention of Bob Rock playing bass on stage with Metallica 🤣🤣🤣
Haha he really wasn’t having it
I was hoping they would come back to that! Rare to see Jason so vividly opposed to someone in the role
@@shareninja416I would have liked to hear more too. Particularly having seen SKOM where it was obvious that Bob was just filling in and helping out, I wonder why Jason was so opposed.
Much respect to Jason! The best bassist Metallica has ever had, the energy he displayed on stage was impressive
Jason would agree with me, there was no one better than Cliff!
Jason was awesome...but Cliff was outstanding
His vocals live on Creeping Death are LEGENDARY
Don’t get me wrong if we can’t have Jason in the band. I’m glad we have Rob, I think Rob is a phenomenal bass player. Probably easily in the top five greatest active bass players in any genre of music right now but when I got into Metallica in the early 90s, Jason was already there and built into it. That era of Metallica is my era and it broke my heart early in 2001 to hear he was leaving my favorite band because he’s such a cool motherfucker.
If you really listen to Rob play, you'll find that you're incorrect. He is very sloppy. He hides behind turning up the bass(frequency, not instrument). When you hear him play classical guitar that really comes out. You could find over a hundred players on RUclips that can easily destroy him. Steve DiGiorgio is one, and Charles Berthoud pretty much destroys everyone.
Furthermore, his voice is god awful.
I remember EXACTLY where I was & what I was doing when it came across MTV news....that was one of the worst days for me. Like everyone, Metallica got me through some shit. I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
The way Jason handled Lars' haters, with a smile, omg👍👍👍
Newsted. What an absolute monster. He is a huge part of my childhood. Even though im a drummer he is still my favorite member of Metallica. Damn I miss that era. Thanks bro for all the great memories that are forever burned in my mind.
thanks for tuning in
Jason was ferocious in stage, miss him
He is still rocking! :D
I started to play bass because of Jason. Metallica played in Porto Alegre/Brasil in May 99’ and I was 12 years old. To see this guy playing is something that i’d never forget. What a great chat, Dean!
thanks for tuning in my friend
Grew up with the Jason era and as good as Rob is, there's always a Jason sized hole in my heart. Dude is bad to the bone and is good to the fans. Huge love and respect. 🤟
I grew up with Jason and will always want him in Metallica.
Jason Newsted is the real deal. Mad respect and love.
Pretty heavy stuff. He never knew James as a sober person. Someone he looked up to and loved working with so much. That's sad.
I met Jason backstage at a Milwaukee concert in 97'. We talked about mountain biking for about 15 min while he was signing autographs. He was quite passionate about it, he signed my backstage pass and thanked me for not talking about the same old crap lol. Great guy
1:43:47 facts! Lars is a big reason Metallica is what is it, he arranges a lot of the riffs even when they made alot of these classics
You don’t realise what a great interviewer you are Dean. Your depth of knowledge and experience is authentic and puts people at ease almost immediately. Stellar discussion as usual!

I had the honor of meeting Newsted on 1.19.23 at his and his wife's art show opening. It was by far one of the best days of my life, since I have been a fan of his since age 13. He truly is a wonderful human with genuine integrity. I'm going to see him with the Newsted band this Sat 5.20 in Ft. Lauderdale. Fan for life in all endeavors 🤘🎸

I love listening to Jason. He's insightful, and very, very intense to listen to.
Fuck dude, this isn't just an interview its an education in being a musician. Jason has an incredible mentality, so glad to see he's looking back with wisdom. Fuckin legend 🤘
Jason rocks. He's still just a good ol' hardworking Michigan boy who practiced his Bass and got the gig of a lifetime.

It always amazes me how he remembers the exact place and date of a show, even when he played hundreds of them. Always a pleasure to listen to Jason, by far my favorite bass player.
Jason was the man in my eyes back when he was with Metallica, his live performance were insane, that is the energy he gave.Great interview Dean,so good that Jason is bring back his own band, loved the Newsted stuff also,u rock keep it going brother.👊🏻🤘🏻🎙️🎸

My band Stone Crow opened up both nights of the Phoenix Shows. Best time of my life :) I was the front man for Stone Crow. I now own an audio store called Lone Crow Audio in Sonoma County.
When I was younger, I used to think Jason was James's younger brother lol. They looked so alike.
So I can definitely see why he talks about the chemistry they shared on and off stage.
Ever since I got into Metallica from the age of 13,for more than 15 years I would have my hair with the undercut cause of Jason. To me he was the heart of Metallica and my favourite member.Be well,be blessed you all ✌🏻
Dean. FUCKING AMAZING INTERVIEW. !!!
Finally an interview that asks real questions with a guy who’s very educated on what he’s asking. You ROCK BROTHER!!!
thank you my friend
Jason is and has taken the high road and just a solid person
Robert is a great player - and by all accounts seems like a great fella, I’m sure he is. So I certainly have no ill will or even negative comment to say about him - he is there and he is good. On the other hand, Jason is more inclined towards metal and was a great fit in Metallica - they got it right, and I wish he would not have left. I am always “rooting” for Jason and definitely enjoyed his Newsted metal music…I am hoping for more. Jason is one of the REAL human beings whether it is in music or not and I respect and appreciate that a great deal. Great interview and thank you - and God Bless Jason in health and all musical endeavors!
This is a great interview, but it's a shame that Dean didn't pause to question at 39:16 when Jason said "sorry, that's a no from me" regarding Bob Rock as bassist. I would love to have heard Jason's thoughts on that.
Yeah well, when Jason offered to come back, Bob Rock was the one who basically said to James and Lars "Don't do it". Soooo fuck Bob Rock.
Dean is one of the best interviewers. Jason is always great to listen to, has a ton of stories and seems like such a cool dude. Great work man
Thank you brother
Still my personal favorite bassist for Metallica. Jason was such an amazing fit for the band in the wake of Cliffs death. RIP Cliff Burton
I admire Jason so much that I would love the opportunity to meet him someday, he is such a nice person and such a great bass player that he deserves the best of the best, thank you Jason for good memories with Metallica, Echobrain, Newsted...
I seriously doubt James and Lars ever told Jason he could do his own thing on bass. James insists he tried to encourage Jason to “do his own thing” and turned away so Jason couldn’t see his playing, but I think the memo never got sent. Everyone knows the Metallica writing process is Lars and James locked in a room together, a lot of the outtakes of “Year and Half” shows James telling Jason what to play… From the Flotsom stuff, Jason tends to play right along with the main riff. I think James didn’t like his bass player being able to keep up with his own down picking. Shame too, because Jason is a beast. Blackened is a prime example that the dudes got chops.
Amen. I feel the same way exactly. It just fits Het’s MO
Jason will always and forever be my all time favorite metal bassist.
Thank you, Jason. For everything!
Much Love & Respect, always.
I love Jason's ability to clearly describe events. The way he tells a story and paint a picture. A great speaker.
Jason is the best 🙌🏼 nothing but respect for him
This makes me hope Jason goes on to do his own interviews/podcast. His insight, as well his ability to just “call a spade a spade” (without bravado or judgement) is unbelievable. Dean I really hope you read these, and can possibly pass the idea along. We need more Jason Newsted. We love Jason Newsted. What a phenomenal episode!!

That is the kind of interview I'd like to hear from Metallica. No script to promote a new album, but a frank talk giving space for Jason to share his history. Thanks a lot for making it!
Thank you so much for this interview! As a kid growing up in the 90's I idolized Jason and eventually became a bass player myself. This interview made me feel as if I was in the room with him. You covered everything I would have asked him about in this interview. So glad to see that he is doing well and is just as energetic and charismatic as ever.

Cool interview! Love ya Jason. Thanks for all the years and all the shows.
This is by far the best interview of Jason I've seen on RUclips, kudos on the quality questions and leaving no stones unturned.

Love Jason so much, what a real brother.
Still love Jason and what he brought to the band! I mean, who would stay through all the shit storm he went through with the band going through the grieving process of losing Cliff, and the hazing the guys put him through? I mean, back then they were still pretty much just kids, and I'm sure the guys were happy to have someone to fill his shoes, but when you are using booze and whatever else as your grieving tool it had to get ugly. I enjoyed every record he was on. Great musician and dedicated as hell. I like Trujillo too, but he doesn't fit in Metallica as good as Jason did IMO. I would love to hear what they would have created in the last 20 years with Jason had he not left.
