Absolutely best reviewer on RUclips. Many so called "Reviewers" on YT, just play with an electronics device few hours at most and they give their opinions. But unless, you really use it for a bit and do actual work with the device that you start seeing the difference. And you are one of those few reviewers who actually do your homework. It is incredibly detailed analysis. I wish you can do similar reviews for other products as well.
And I don't blame him. He's scrutinising the cutting edge of paper realistic computers. This is the direction in which a lot of people in the future may be prompted to go due to its applications in business, industry and education, if it turns out to be reliable, like Macs are preferred in many office environments today because they don't cater to gamers. What other e-paper tablets do is indeed fascinating. But it's hard to ignore the significance of achieving a 21ms input delay in terms of making a tool that is actually comfortably useful and reliable. And I'm a sucker for ebook/PDF readers, but it's been done before. It works, and is a software optimisation issue. I think reMarkable is trying to lead a revolution in pushing the envelope. So much so that, even though colour e-paper displays are being rolled out now, I imagine that reMarkable are gonna pull an Apple stunt, and not upgrade their devices to colour unless they can achieve a comparable improvement to their pen input, preserving the relatability with physical paper. Even if 90% of their other reader and navigation functionality continue to be crap, they will deserve recognition for their bold ambition, that seems to be casually ignored for similar all-rounder products. Say, even if they went bankrupt in a few months, I think it's safe to say they would be remembered with sadness for the quality they delivered and goal they tried to achieve. They gotta hire someone to fix that poor excuse for reader already, though. Gosh.
I totally agree and I would support them ignoring the color aspect until it can replicate the 21ms latency. However I think the ball is now completely in the software development department court and it really depends how they handle it. They have the potential to knock it out of the park with the rM2, but software side of things has to be taken way more seriously.
@@MyDeepGuide Afaik a source told me they got a computing wiz to do algorithms and a custom pen driver on xochitl, the main system. Whether or not that is true, it is one arguably small thing that they really got working. But unless there's something I'm missing, they don't get interface design at all, and have no idea what they're doing with the readers.
Thank you so much for this. Happily keeping my Rm1 after watching this comparison. I honestly really felt like going for the 2 because of the eraser... I love that the one is actually thicker... because it feels like a real paper notebook... and I love the click on the Rm1 pen... it helps with my anxiety... I don't write for an hour non stop... I write songs and the click on the back of the rm1 is super soothing like a clicker box... either way... good job! Thanks for this.
Ordered RM1 as I was not interested in waiting around for three months. Love the device it saves me so much time in terms of nkte taking for business meetings.
So much better than the Good E Reader video. Thank you for putting all the work in regarding videos of this device! rM2 is so much better for comfort. The edges you described, the no buttons, the extra space on the left. Only the weight is worse. I think rM2 sounded harder and rM1 sounded softer. I would like to know if rM2 is more like a ballpoint pen than rM1. Could you tell me please? WTH, how the hell is rM1 faster than 2 in booting?! Has the same OS and rM2 has higher specs... And moving the cutout is straight up broken... Wanted to see the speed of picking all the tools, that I think is faster on rM2. But hard to test. Damn, screen is worse in the sun too... But like you said, hopefully it's fixable with software updates too. But then again... they are slow with that. Seems that the nibs will wear down slower on rM2, that's good. Looking forward to another video after you'e used it for longer.
@@ioioio13 It's not all bad though, their sheer worthlessness is what led me here, ages ago, before it was my deep guide even. Also, goodereaders' sony vs remarkable 2 "review" laughable. Especially after they have shown bias in an earlier video. Can't give it any credence at all.
Excellent review, I love that you even share what writing on each sounds like and really give a full review, it's amazing for products that people might hesitate to buy without being able to touch/test it in person. Thank you!
I hardly ever subscribe to channels. Made an exception here because I found myself checking regularly for new videos. This is amazingly informative. Great job, thank you so much.
Thanks for the detailed review! Appreciate the attention to detail and the 1 hr test on each device! Happy to hear that writing near the edges is much better than on the RM1.
Wow, the speed difference really surprised me! I really hope that it's due to the rM2 being a pre production unit, would love some follow-up once you receive your batch-2 device!
No promises, but usually on an ARM device, there are always a lot of issues with software and driver optimization that can slow down an early-release unit, which *COULD* get faster with software updates.
I've just ordered a supernote. Originally I was tempted by RM2 and considered RM1. However, while I think these are great devices and many will prefer them, it's the size and future updates that the A6x offer that suits my needs better. One of the other things that persuaded me (apart from all your reviews, Voja, which are extremely helpful) is how quickly and honestly SN seem to respond to queries, whereas, ReMarkable don't appear to be addressing customers requests or concerns or even keep them in the loop about current issues and/or future improvements. Still it looks like an amazing device and I hope anyone who has either will get lots of use and enjoyment out of them
I was set on ordering the RM2 but my ended up ordering the Supernote A6X. RM seems to have focused on the hardware and left the software behind. Supernote emailed me back quickly when I asked a question, I see them on the chat boards working with users, and it integrates with Dropbox. For me, it seemed like better bang for buck plus the form factor works for me personally. RM2 is a beautiful product there is no doubt about that fact but they could focus a bit more on software. None of them are breaking barriers at this point but Supernote just edges out RM to me - right now!
@@MarkLennard there are two sizes. The newer model A6X is 7.8". Yes, I ordered from their website and it ships from China. Please be careful as there are extra fees and VAT to take into account when comparing prices
I noticed on your speed test at ~33:00, the RM2 was still doing a sync in the background. I know my RM1 is slower while the sync is going on. Turn off the syncing before doing the test again.
That was an awesome review and so much detailed as usual. Whereas Good ereader has been taking these reviews so for-granted. They must have sent that unit to Morning Coach instead.
So basically, rM1&2 are like two notebooks with different kinds of paper. rM1 awkwardly framed hardcover sketchbook with rougher paper and protruding edges that sometimes curl when you move your arm around. rM2 glue bound slim note with thin, finer grit paper that quickly absorbs your ink (also you're allowed to bring a mechanical pencil with an eraser). Somehow opening and moving stuff around is more efficient on the rough papered rM1, but it may be because the manufacturers of rM2 haven't quite gotten used to pressing out fine grit paper yet.
Wow! Another excellent, informative video. Your reviews and comparisons are second to none. When I receive my rM2 sometime later this year, it will be the first reMarkable device that I will have ever used. I will not notice any speed differences compared to rM1. The device will be the device and the speed will be the speed. Still a software update is sorely needed fix some worrisome issues that your comparison exposed in the rM2.
I still chose the 1 over 2 because of the price difference - 299 for the bundle VS 448 for the 2. Also the availability - next stock for 2 is available only in Jan 2021. Great Video :)
Awesome comparison review, very professional, without bias. I think I will keep going on my RM1 for sometimes ... to me, it look as though the pros of RM2 which are mainly on the confort side do not justify the investment. Thanks for your very comprehensive videos on eInk devices. Erick
It's very common that pre-production units are slower. Performance are typically the last thing focused on (functionality is usually first). It should be better when released, but they should have prepared for this for review units (and they may have, there may be other reasons for it being a bit slow I guess).
I'm consider buying this for notes taking. I am curious though if you can reference another note. Ideally a certain region in different document you may have written at a different time. Sort of like you do on Microsoft OneNote
Another amazing review. I have had the RM1 for about 6 months and think it’s great. But I have ordered the RM2 now. In your reviews that the RM2 looks to have a better contrast with the black looking to be more blacker. Although I was shocked at how much slower the RM2 was. That’s a bit of a worry. I’m hoping that now they have released an amazing bit of hardware that they will now focus on the software. Ive been following you since before you changed to “My Deep Guide” and I still get amazed at your videos. You should 7m subscribers!!!
Another great comparison. I think all your points need to be sent to rM - and my hope is that they take it to heart and make corrections asap - else, a lot of returns; major business loos and a brand-name degradation. Other thing I have to comment on is your English. For a non native speaker - you are unbelievable! The social nuances that you are able to express makes you that much more relatable and effective. Congratulations !
With the increased battery life that we see on the Remarkable 2 that does makes sense that processing could be slower even with improved hardware. If the processing engine in Remarkable 2 has been optimized for battery life then processing time could be compromised... just like a vehicle tuned for gas mileage won’t win races against a vehicle tuned for performance. Might have been an intentional compromise. If the unit is still usable without annoyance under normal circumstances, (not side by side comparison), then for many people that’s a worthwhile trade. That’s totally just my own analysis of the speed differences, I could be wrong. If that is the case it could be cool if Remarkable team offers different performance settings via os updates in the future for those who would prefer speed over battery.
First: Congrats for the reviews. Very well done!. Although just seems a little viased to rM2, which I may understand when somebody has a lot of expectation to a very good looking device for long time ;-) Second: After these magnific reviews, I really hope rM team contact with you to clarify all the extrange things that happen with rM2 specially in the ones which is worse than rM1 (shall be none!!). And after that, contact with all people that are waiting for months to get the device to calm us down by promissing a new SW that solves the issues, and avoid us cancelling the order.
My rM2 arrived today! I will surely compare it to my rM1 and see if the speed differences still exist. Edit: Some tests. rM1 and rM2 both 100% charged; rM1 version 2.3.0.16 (latest version), rM2 version 2.3.1.27 (as delivered; latest version) rM2 start-up was definitely slower. Both have exactly the same files (synced through the cloud). rM1shows 0.67 GB of 6.53 GB used, but rM2 shows only 0.56 GB of 6.41 GB used. And yes, I checked the trashcan: empty on both systems. It seems rM2 is more frugal with its storage. Better file compression? Different filesystem? Moving a selection was OK. I could not see a difference between rM1 and rM2, except that rM2 had no "ghosting" and the selection moved crisply and clearly. Definitely an improvement. Building thumbnails: no difference in speed. Page switching: no difference in speed. Duplicating a large file: same speed. Conclusion: Except for the start-up time, the speed is at least the same between rM1 and rM2. rM2 seems more frugal with its storage. The problems with the selection (select, move, copy, paste) have been solved.
@@SusheePerumal no. I'm sure he means he terminated cloud sync on the RM 1, connected in cloud synced the rm2, and compared the storage. You absolutely cannot keep the two in automatic sync. It is possible that the RM one has a series of temporary cache files, however, taking up the incremental space. Seems more likely than the unit moving to a new file system with a compression layer.
I read it again... Sorry if it bothered you the first time ! I appreciate the passion you put in your reviews so as you said you could expect the same from your viewers :-) ! Safe travel for the geese !
Many thanks for all your efforts creating these reviews. You have helped me hugely! The writing experience is always going to be inferior to my fountain pens, so I'm more interested in the additional features a digital device offers, which, sadly with reMarkable aren't good enough right now. I'm going to wait and see if RM get their act together software wise, and am very much looking forward to your future Supernote A6X review which may tip me towards the A5X when it is released. Good job, keep it up, and you deserve funding!
Sterling review, as always 👍. Very surprised at some of the results, but as you said, let’s see if the actual production units are the same. As per another comment from Ted Manasa, you should definitely consider Patreon. You put so much time and effort in all the reviews for the many devices, Patreon (we) can help support your work.
55:00 I had the same issue on my rM1 two days ago ! I freaked out ! I also noticed that the surface became wobbly. I won't expose it to direct sunlight anymore
@@MyDeepGuide hahaha! Sea-level for me! But the dots appeared not while it was under direct sunlight but 5 min later when I was inside. So I was surprised with your explanation. I thought it was maybe the heat... Hopefully it came back to normal afterward
The reMarkable 2 is connected to the cloud, the reMarkable 1 is not. Maybe this is the reason for the different boot times. And thanks for your wonderful reviews! :)
Not surprised to see the differences in speed. It appears as if they didn't manage to finish their optimised software for the updated spec of RM2 (i.e. second core, memory managenent, etc), and simply shipped the review units with the same OS that runs perfectly on RM1. The 120MB size difference in the two OSs seem to be new drivers (e.g.to support the new stylus functionality). Let's hope they're working on their updated OS to have it ready when the first production units ship. Otherwise, I see droves of units going back for refund...
Totally agree. It can most definitely be the case of pre-beta version where just functionality was implemented and zero optimizations. But I do think that it's absolutely imperative that the consumer devices ship with an OS version that is much more optimized than this one is.
@@MyDeepGuide Couldn't agree more. It's the reason I've delayed my order. Will forfeit the early order bonus for info on the OS that ships with the actual consumer units. That's worth €157 to me. Customers are absolutely right to expect the weaknesses of RM1 to be addressed in the generation change. They've missed enough tricks already by not developing the "not so loved" areas of their OS on RM1, it seems, making it a much weaker product than it needs to be. Looking forward to one of your excellent reviews of the "real thing" once you have it...
Thank you for submitting the ticket, and talking about the sun spots. I wouldn't have known that was a software issue. Also, I live in Texas... There's always sun here.
Because of your reviews of the RM2, I decided to cancel my order (batch 6) and order the Quirklogic Papyr. Remarkable has had 3 years to perfect their software and , in certain major areas according to you, they haven't. The hardware improvements are stellar as it is a great looking unit. The problem is, for me, looks are great, but, they are essentially irrelevent. I wasn't buying it for its looks, I was going to buy it for its software performance. Software can always be improved with updates. The problem is the software deficiencies that you detail should not have been there after 3 years of development. What I would have expected was a state of the art e-ink notetaker and reader with software updates in the future to further enhance the unit and not play catch up by fixing prior deficiencies that should have been corrected, but, were not. Combine that with the less than adequate customer service and delivery details and I felt that I needed an alternative. At this moment, I don't think anyone readlly knows if there will be another delay or not and even if it will be delivered this year or not. Personally, I found Quirklogic's customer service excellent and the Papyr product, which is still in its infancy, to be very promising. I wish the best for the RM2, but, they need to make large improvements to their sales and product production processes. Finally, I want to thank you for all of the time you put in on your RM2 reviews. They were extremely well done and, in my humble opinion, were the most informative and unbiased of all of the RM2 reviews I have seen.
I'm still deciding between one or both, leaning towards the RM2. Between the two, the feature set of the Papyr speaks to me more intellectually, the RM2 speaks to me more emotionally. The pressure and angle sensitivity can contribute a lot to expressing nuance in writing, and so the RM2 is likely the device I would grab if I wanted to write down my dreams before it fades, or a journal entry or something. The Papyr with its infinite canvas and ability to change templates each page sounds a lot better for planning and mind mapping and organizing and all that. Both devices are servicable in any of those use cases, and I'd probably be fine with just one, but if I had both that's how I'd use them. (I don't really draw or plan to use it much for reading PDFs or other books.) My big fear of the Papyr and all the Sony DPT hardware devices is that the micro usb charging port is the very clear break point of the device. I've worn out too many of those in other phones and gadgets to be comfortable having that. And because it's not Quirklogic's hardware, there is no guarantee there will ever be a second revision. It is nice the software is cross platform so at least there's no chance of losing all your work and you can access it in other ways. I'm new to learning about this category of device so please correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like the remarkable team has the hardware in their own control, and so now there's a 2, and if it does well there will be a 3. Will there ever be a Papyr 2? Is Sony developing another interation of the harware for other people to put their software on? If not for the micro usb port I would have bought a Papyr already for sure. As it is, I still might get one. It does offer a lot. But I'm in no rush and am still going to think about it
@@gerrya2133 Dear Gerry - I was going to get a magnetic adapter to the port. In this way, if something is plugged in and pulled by accident while recharging, the cord will just come apart magnetically. No damage - Best regards, Rick
Good looking out on the sunspot thing. Hopefully the team takes your service ticket seriously and it becomes a non-issue for new users receiving their units.
great vids .. Nearly bought R1 when it came out, but just too many negs, R2 looks a lot better, but now there is colour E-Ink, I expect a R3 at some point .. that will be a killer as I read and review a lot of pdf material - so being able to comment on colour is rather more important
Appreciate the in depth comparison. You might want to do the OS response comparison while measuring the battery utilization. I have a strong suspension some of the add latency of RM2 is due to the manufacturer's power management implementation using multiple processors, which actually cut the power usage in 1/2 in your writing test.
Do you believe rM is going to invest in software? I’m in batch 4 but I’m anticipating the Ratta Supernote A5X because my rM1 is frustratingly limited as far as basic features.
I hope they do. They really should, but it also depends on which direction that investment is directed. If it's all poured into a subscription model of some sort before basics are fixed and improved, then that would be a damn shame.
@@MyDeepGuide Just seen on Reddit today Remarkable are hiring software developers. It seems they are looking to make improvements. Hopefully over the next 6 months - year we see nice improvements. I am considering pre ordering
Canceled my rM2 pre-order because of the lack of software improvements, particular those that would capitalize on the new processor and RAM. I will watch what rM does over the next couple of months, but passively. Hope you get that Patreon up soon because you saved me $500!
9:32 Was kind of hoping to see the same footage for full-screen writing in RM2.. For RM2, can you add new page while writing in full screen mode? In RM1 I remember being able to add new pages by simply pressing the physical button. But since RM2 got rid of the buttons, I wonder if swiping to the right while writing can add new pages (without having to call the menu every time).
They are the exact same systems. So everything that works on rM1 works on rM2. Adding a page is a "next page" command when you reach the end of a notebook. On rM1 "next page" command can be executed by using the physical button or by swiping right, on rM2 it's executed by swiping right. As for RM2 footage, well there's really a lot of that (and the same footage as well during the battery testing segment) and a wholly dedicated video for writing experience alone, so I recommend that you watch my 4 part video which is the in-depth review of the remarkable 2, or if you're only interested in writing, then part 3.
I'm guessing the Software is tuned for single core. Dual cores could then be an overhead and in fact be slower. The software needs tuning/rewriting for multiple cores, but of course that would mean problems, or a slow down for RM1.
The overall speed-difference can also come from the differences of data amount. As the rm2 has more pressure Levels it also have to load/Copy/Switch more Data than rm1
Great review. Just one comment: when copying notebooks, the size of the file should be related to the number of strokes rather than number of pages. On the RM2 you had a much tighter writing, so, probably, many more strokes per page, and a much larger file.
Wow another amazing detailed video. By the looks of it Remarkable decided to initially focus most of their resources on the hardware and completely neglected the software, since the weaker hardware on RM1 is outperforming the RM2 which is suppose to be at least twice as powerful. This most definitely means that little to optimization was done on the software to utilize the RM2 new hardware. Remarkable probably hoped that people would buy their device and in the coming months/years they can focus on the software and fix the issues raised. Kind of disappointed they're shipping an unfinished product.
Can the used storage have an impact on boot time? I noticed the RM2 had a lot more of its storage used, so maybe if they perform some operations on whatever is stored on them during boot may impact boot time?
Great detailed comparison. Although the very fast writing/response time experience of RM2 seduced me a lot, the overall product still gives that prototype feel… (had that feeling with RM1 as well but it was OK for a totally new concept/device)… following this review, I decided to upgrade my RM1 when RM3 is out :) thank you.
Thanks for the video. I find it hard to make my own decision based on what you're telling me because you use ever-changing adjectives to describe the experience. For instance, when you compare the writing experience you use fairly mild adjectives but in the end you claim that the writing experience difference is "massive/huge" or some such. What changed? Further, how is it a catastrophe that the RM2 boots up slower? Who cares? The new hardware is for making the latency quicker, I would assume.
I have the RM1 and while new pen interest me and sure rm2 looks nicer... I think I'm going to stay with RM1 and not rush to get rm2 till maybe another year.
I have a reMarkable 1 and a reMarkable 2 coming. Thanks for this video. It will help me decide which to keep. It sure seems like the performance is functionally identical between the two. I will likely fall victim to the superficial, sexier design of the 2 (and that USB-C). I ordered the 1 b/c I was impatient with the shipping time of the 2. Now they're both getting here within 1 day of one another. #FML!
@@jvital09 Returned both. The 2 hardware is beautiful and the device was responsive. It just wasn't for me. I was looking for a bullet journal solution and this wasn't it. Not reMarkable's fault. What was their fault was the HORRIBLE customer service. It took from a few days to a few weeks to get a response. It took me 6 full weeks to get a refund and that only came after I gave up on them and called my credit card company directly. Two days after getting Morgan Stanley involved (Apple Card), they came back to me with a "your refund is being processed" or some-such. Never buying a high-dollar item from a small company again. reMarkable poisoned the well. The whole ordeal left me knowing that if I'd kept my reMarkable 2 and had a problem down the road, they definitely wouldn't have stood behind it and made things right.
For future writing sound it would be great if you pause the music for this section. Great comparision, hope remakable sill listen software vise. My batch is late so I probably have until the end of the year to see if any updates arrive.
thank you and i laughed a lot when you tested for the software performance!! it is a huge prob yet it is not since it is just a software. hope they fix and launch.
I already cancel my pre-order last month because I can't keep waiting my RM2 and also I have my RM1, and right now I'm so thanks for this video , I don't regret cancel my pre-order for my RM2, because I think the RM1 is really enough to me , I'm really looking forward the next generation RM3 with better software update depend open operate system and better hardware with colorful eink display and UI design , there a lots of new Eink products release now , also there a lots of choice for Eink notebook .
Something that puts me off is the bias pricing against the UK. I know there are different taxes and duties, but why do other countries get bigger discount percentages on the pen and folio. Also, the prices are conveniently $399, €399 and £399, or 3990kr, which doesn't make any sense other than choosing a nice number. £359 would be a fairer price for the UK, even taking taxes and VAT etc into consideration. Norway pays more VAT than the UK and still are charged less at £351 at today's rate.
@@BaronSamedi1959 Missing the point somewhat. But anyway, there have been many cases for 'maybes' over the last 100+ years, but converting to the Euro seems the least likely to have benefited the UK.
Is there any updates about the software performance on the RM2? I'm looking into buying one and wonder if the much cheaper RM1 might be the better choice.
Just a note from someone who has a device with a button on the pen. I don't know if you've used a pen with buttons, but I will say, from my own experience, it's incredibly frustrating and distracting. I ended up getting a sleeve for my pen which solves my problem. But before that, I didn't use it, but instead used a different writing stylus I have, which doesn't have the button. I constantly pushed the button by accident, activating features assigned to the button, and I'd have to stop writing and close the feature. You're much better off with the top having the eraser, or selecting it from the menu if you prefer that (i like having the eraser on my pen personally).
Batch 8. Great review/comparison. Hope they fix the software issues. I see a bunch of guitars. Have you tested this with sheet music? Is the page flip fast enough?
that's astonishing! well gonna check prices on the RM 1 now I guess. Because one thing you forgot to mention: you have a delivery on the RM 1 without "further delays because of the pandemic situation".
I doubt the software has been optimized for the dual core processor. Aside from the Linux kernel, the code is likely optimized for the single processor. However, the power savings more than justifies its improvements.
Now that you have your personal unit. Are the performnce issues still there, such as the zoom speed, and the issue with moving the text around in a notebook?
About starting time. Have seen that the RM2 was quite loaded with (storage). And you said that RM1 was not connected to internet. Maybe that's the reason ? RM2 has to establish connection first ?
First of all. Thank you for the AMAZING, detailed, non-biased, quite nerdy and humorous reviews you create. You rock! As the recipient of one of this pre-production RM2 units. Do you have a faster communication channel with RM to address these questions? Booting on RM1 faster than RM2, ridiculous. The sunlight issue on the screen. Etccc By the way, can't wait to get my hands on mine (batch 7)....
I don't have a direct line, but I have sent them some of my findings and am waiting for a response to know where to send issues related to the rM2, so yeah, I'm letting them know, but I also know that they watch my videos and are actually quite supportive of it, despite me being transparent, so I give them definitely kudos for that :)
I don't get the "overall comfort" part. You say you prefer the feel of the RM1 screen, but you like the in-hand feel of the RM2 pen, which, in net, I guess produced the overall better comfort for you on RM2. However, that is not the default RM2 pen. It's a pen upgrade that also works on RM1 (eraser aside). You could have purchased and used that pen for RM1 to have the screen you prefer and the in-hand pen feel that you prefer.
Yes it is, it is the rM2 marker plus that I used here. That is not the same pen as the "upgrade" pen for rM1. What don't you get about the comfort? I thought I made it quite clear by explaining each of the elements that have an effect on that aspect.
Also, just a hypothesis, but, based on similar specs (4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity, EMR) and having had similar issue in the sun, I think the Remarkable 2 and the Onyx Boox Note 2 are using the same Wacom digitizer layer solution, so what accounts for the difference in response time? One way would be lower level software, since Boox Note 2 has a heavier OS in Android. However, couldn't another be to dedicate a core to monitoring and responding to pen input? That could explain why they didn't multithread to optimize for the multiple cores (or this isn't it at all and they just didn't do it).
@@MyDeepGuide The default pen for RM2 does not have the eraser. A pen upgrade is required to get the eraser, so you weren't using the default pen for RM2. Reference: cdn.sanity.io/images/0e4kwcjv/production/4e21b4f35fd8d1b260f93cd5b3e8adbd4888fd1c-1000x707.jpg
I was looking for my first digital notepad and after watching your video I decided to order the Remarkable 1. I don't see improvements of RM2 justifies $100 difference. Many pros on RM2 as you described are only apparent when compared to RM1 but for a person who never used either devices I don't really see them as big of a deal. Also, I couldn't see difference in latency when you wrote on both devices, even with 0.5x slow down. You claimed that it's a huge difference but I just couldn't see it.
We are talking about a huge difference in writing feel and experience. This is not something you can see @30fps, since we're talking about a difference of 30ms in latency between the two devices. 1 frame is 33ms at 30fps, so no, you can't see it in this format, but when used, you most definitely feel and see it. That being said,if you've never used an rM2 or an rM1 before, Gen 1 will provide for an amazing writing experience just as well :)
Excellent review -After this review I am having second thoughts if I should cancel my order -second batch- Lack of imagination from the company - Making the hardware look good but lack of any any improvement on the software shows ignorance from the reMarkable team-what a shame!!
excellent review ... good with the bad ... obviously they need better programmers to take advantage of the faster cpu ... more storage probably would not work due to the very slow access times to load and save ... i am not a fan of subscriptions and off device storage ... i have my doubts but will not withdraw my pre order ... remarkable is luck to have you reviewing their product, at least their customers can go in with our eyes open ...
Great work, love the detailed reviews! Do you know if it's possible to convert to text and then save that digital text in the same document as the hand written file? I thought it would be useful to be able to search by keyword through my notes.
Some of the responsiveness regarding copy documents and booting differences might be directly related to the cloud sync feature with some bad coding practices. Oddly enough larger and more CPUs but also longer battery life makes believe that some of the issues might be in fact an energy saving issue which they might patch in a later release
Great comparison. Could you do a comparison of remarkable 2 with onyx boox note 2 or max 3? I think having Android on Software side is great to also learn languages, have flashcards apps, browse chrome for reading and to install different readers. I wonder if the hardware from remarkable 2 is superior enough to justify not having all those functionalities on the software side.
I no longer have either Note 2 or Max 3, but you can find in-depth reviews of both devices on my channel and then make the comparison yourself and decide what works best for you :)
This man is a detective
Gosh.
This is just basic testing. There's even more stuff he didn't do that I would do.
@@Nekotaku_TV I prefer the way he did it over the way you didn't do it.
so much effort you have put into this comparison. The best so far ! Thank you, sir !
Yes, their “review” feels like an ad.
@@jamerican347 Yeah, that guys videos are all useless and devoid of substance.

Probably the software isnt optimized yet for rm2

Excellent review, I love that you even share what writing on each sounds like and really give a full review, it's amazing for products that people might hesitate to buy without being able to touch/test it in person. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!

Thank you very much for the support and for watching :)
When he was doing the speed test the rm2 was syncing in the back ground of he had turned off the sync during the test it would have been much faster
I hope the reMarkable software team watches this video in full and takes notes.
I guess they never tested or experienced their own software in any way similar. even the developers.

Thank you, Mr. Voja!
Really, it is a deep and objective comparison as we are always used to.
What size is the supernote? Is it available in the UK?

I love the sound of the pen snapping into place on the rm2 @18:47
I noticed on your speed test at ~33:00, the RM2 was still doing a sync in the background. I know my RM1 is slower while the sync is going on. Turn off the syncing before doing the test again.
Thank you as always Voja.
Awesome review! I love how in depth you go.
Kids are back at school but I’m still WFH. A cup of tea and an hour of Voija. How lovely :)
Love your idea for the two buttons on the marker instead of the eraser. Just bought mine a week ago! Happy to find this vid
Probably the first video over 15 min I ever watched
Yupps, that's why I kept stressing it in the video, because it's not a production unit, so hopefully some of the issues have been ironed out :)
Nice. Awaiting this comparison. Loved the rM2 review series. Please continue that format. :)

I was going to buy a 1 but watched your video and just got a 2 today, thank you Voya 👍🏼
Sir.... YOUR REVIEWS ARE MIND-BLOWING! I am a brand-new subscriber.
Thank you very much and welcome to the channel :)
First: Congrats for the reviews. Very well done!. Although just seems a little viased to rM2, which I may understand when somebody has a lot of expectation to a very good looking device for long time ;-)
Second: After these magnific reviews, I really hope rM team contact with you to clarify all the extrange things that happen with rM2 specially in the ones which is worse than rM1 (shall be none!!). And after that, contact with all people that are waiting for months to get the device to calm us down by promissing a new SW that solves the issues, and avoid us cancelling the order.
Love your videos! You made the best reviews for e-readers. Thank you!
Great comparison. Thank you for the effort you put in. RM2 seems more ergonomical but the software needs to be addressed immediately.
I am impressed by your review, I hope you have all the success you deserve. Great job!
Thank you very much! :)
My rM2 arrived today! I will surely compare it to my rM1 and see if the speed differences still exist.
Edit:
Some tests. rM1 and rM2 both 100% charged; rM1 version 2.3.0.16 (latest version), rM2 version 2.3.1.27 (as delivered; latest version)
rM2 start-up was definitely slower.
Are you able to sync the two - using them interchangeably?
@@SusheePerumal no. I'm sure he means he terminated cloud sync on the RM 1, connected in cloud synced the rm2, and compared the storage. You absolutely cannot keep the two in automatic sync.
It is possible that the RM one has a series of temporary cache files, however, taking up the incremental space. Seems more likely than the unit moving to a new file system with a compression layer.

Many thanks for all your efforts creating these reviews. You have helped me hugely! The writing experience is always going to be inferior to my fountain pens, so I'm more interested in the additional features a digital device offers, which, sadly with reMarkable aren't good enough right now. 55:00 I had the same issue on my rM1 two days ago ! I freaked out ! I also noticed that the surface became wobbly. I won't expose it to direct sunlight anymore
Wobblies would scare me, but the dots I never experienced on my rM1. Were you too close to the sun? :D
@@MyDeepGuide hahaha! Sea-level for me! But the dots appeared not while it was under direct sunlight but 5 min later when I was inside. So I was surprised with your explanation. I thought it was maybe the heat... Hopefully it came back to normal afterward
Hmmmm, that's quite strange. Usually it's the sun hitting the screen with certain intensity that does it. A refresh gets rid of those always :)
Thank you very much for this review! So detailed and accurate😍I want to buy one as gift for a special person and you were really helpful!
The reMarkable 2 is connected to the cloud, the reMarkable 1 is not. Maybe this is the reason for the different boot times. And thanks for your wonderful reviews! :)
I'll test and see if that makes a difference :)
Amazing detailed review!
(I don't really draw or plan to use it much for reading PDFs or other books.)
My big fear of the Papyr and all the Sony DPT hardware devices is that the micro usb charging port is the very clear break point of the device.

Appreciate the in depth comparison. You might want to do the OS response comparison while measuring the battery utilization. I have a strong suspension some of the add latency of RM2 is due to the manufacturer's power management implementation using multiple processors, which actually cut the power usage in 1/2 in your writing test.
Thanks for all your thoughtful reviews. Hoping you can soon get your hands on an Supernote A6X to compare with RM2.

@@MyDeepGuide Thanks a lot! Just gave thumbs up for all videos :)
Oh my goodness, this is a great review. Thanks!
No, the OS has it's own reserved portion of storage. That's why we don't get the full 8GB.
#FML!
Any Updates?

Maybe the UK should have converted to the EURO and stayed in the EU?
@@BaronSamedi1959 Missing the point somewhat. But anyway, there have been many cases for 'maybes' over the last 100+ years, but converting to the Euro seems the least likely to have benefited the UK.
May I have a device with the dimensions and software of Onyx Boox Max 3, the build quality of RM2 and the writing feel of RM1? Thank you!
Coming right up!

And the handwriting to text conversion of the RM2
Maybe it's a habit thing. I've used Wacom pens and drawing tablets for decades, so I am used to buttons :)
12:25 Wouldn't the levels of sensitivity be a function of the device's digitizer, and not the pen itself?
Batch 8. Great review/comparison. Hope they fix the software issues.
I see a bunch of guitars.
Have you tested this with sheet music? Is the page flip fast enough?
They have music related templates and side flip is rather fast. Search for other RM1 or RM 2 videos to see this in more detail.
I wonder if they were able to fix the transform feature yet...
that's astonishing! well gonna check prices on the RM 1 now I guess.
Are the performnce issues still there, such as the zoom speed, and the issue with moving the text around in a notebook?
thanks for the in deep comparison
About starting time. Have seen that the RM2 was quite loaded with (storage). And you said that RM1 was not connected to internet. Maybe that's the reason ? RM2 has to establish connection first ?
No to storage (it has a reserved area for OS only) and I don't think so for wifi, as it connects to wifi after it boots, but I'll check.
Etccc
By the way, can't wait to get my hands on mine (batch 7)....
@@MyDeepGuide cool deal. Once again. Congrats on the amazing work you deliver.

Excellent review -After this review I am having second thoughts if I should cancel my order -second batch- Lack of imagination from the company - Making the hardware look good but lack of any any improvement on the software shows ignorance from the reMarkable team-what a shame!!
excellent review ... good with the bad ... obviously they need better programmers to take advantage of the faster cpu ... more storage probably would not work due to the very slow access times to load and save ... i am not a fan of subscriptions and off device storage ... i have my doubts but will not withdraw my pre order ... remarkable is luck to have you reviewing their product, at least their customers can go in with our eyes open ...
maybe the lower battery of the rm2 is a factor? If the latency is caused by the software, can be fixed with software udpdates?
Great work, love the detailed reviews! Do you know if it's possible to convert to text and then save that digital text in the same document as the hand written file? I thought it would be useful to be able to search by keyword through my notes.
Nope, unfortunately not possible at the moment.
@@MyDeepGuide Ah that's a shame, thanks for all your good work though.
I like his voice
There is something very ASMR-like in saying what you are about to write down as you are writing it down.
