  • Two questions to answer today.
    1. Now that there are such great productivity devices, in full colour e-ink, is the remarkable outdated and obsolete?
    2. And well, I am not quite happy with my HP spectre, on paper there is lots to love, but, I don't know I've never quite clicked with it. Should my next laptop be the framework 16?

Many people mistakenly compare an ink tablet to an iPad or other tablets. However, there is a significant difference between them, and the ink tablet is not intended to fully replace an iPad. In fact, those who purchase an ink tablet typically do not desire an iPad. They may already own one or simply have no interest in owning one at all.
One of the key distinctions between an ink tablet and an iPad is the primary purpose they serve. While an iPad is designed to be a versatile device that can handle a wide range of tasks, an ink tablet is specifically designed for handwriting and sketching purposes. This makes it a preferred choice for individuals who prioritize a seamless and natural writing experience.
Moreover, the ink tablet offers a unique set of features that cater to the needs of artists, designers, and creative professionals. With advanced pressure sensitivity and precision, it allows users to create detailed and intricate drawings or illustrations. This specialized functionality sets it apart from the iPad, which may not provide the same level of precision and accuracy for artistic endeavors.
Furthermore, the ink tablet provides a distraction-free environment for those who solely want to focus on their writing or drawing. Unlike an iPad, which often offers various applications and internet connectivity, the ink tablet eliminates these potential distractions and allows users to concentrate solely on their creative work. This feature appeals to individuals who value simplicity and minimalism in their creative process.
When I first discovered ink tablets, I was primarily interested in using them for note-taking and reading PDF files. I specifically wanted a tablet that didn't have the distractions of an iPad or a regular tablet. The first ink tablet I came across was the remarkable 2, which I purchased, tried out, and enjoyed. However, I ultimately returned it due to the absence of a backlight and the requirement of a subscription for certain features to be functional. Instead, I opted for the supernote a5x. I used the supernote a5x for several months and was quite pleased with it. It had a backlight and didn't require any additional payments. However, I found that writing and taking notes on the supernote screen didn't quite match the experience of using the remarkable tablet.
I wasn't satisfied with it, so I decided to sell it and try the Onyx Boox Tab Ultra C. It was exciting during the first week with its "color screen" and the ability to download Android apps. However, I quickly grew tired of it when I downloaded Outlook, Teams, Notion, and other apps. The constant notifications from these apps became overwhelming, and I found myself constantly exploring new apps on the tablet. I realized that I wasn't being productive with it.
That's when I started questioning why I even needed an ink tablet in the first place. What was my actual need for searching for the perfect ink tablet? Then, it dawned on me. I initially looked for an ink tablet because I wanted a distraction-free device without blue light that I could use for taking notes at work. I was tired of staring at screens all day, so I needed an ink tablet where I could take notes and read PDF files.
In the end, I went back to the Remarkable 2, which was the perfect ink tablet for my specific needs.
Apologies for any mistakes in my English writing. It is not my native language.

E ink tablets look amazing and I plan on getting one... I tried out a remarkable 2 in stores. To say it offers better art tools than an iPad is simply not true, wven for sketching, unless you are specifically talking about drawing outside under direct sun. The ipad is used as a professional art tool for a reason, and it's extremely good. I do professional level art, and often use an iPad.
The e ink tablet pens are good (they use wacom tech, after all), but the tools are for behind something like an iPad. The display isnalso limited in shades of grey. Still... e ink tablets serve a purpose and are quite cool, and can be used as a simple sketchbook to great effect.
In a way, I'd think of an e ink tablet more like paper and pencil... more limited, whereas an iPad can do fully finished pieces (of any style, size, and medium).

As a writer, the RM2 makes me want to write. Similar to a really nice fountain pen. That type-folio is a marvel and every time I handle one I am blown away by its design and it feels like a class act. That seems to help the writing process, or the motivation to get into the writing process, and that's a good thing.

great video folks. I sold my remarkable, but I missed it so much I bought another lol. I was going to try the Boox Ultra C, even placed my order on Amazon, but, when I learnt that it connects back to severs in China for no obvious reason, I could not have my information on it. Not that my stuff is so special and needing protection, rather that I worry when privacy and security are opaque.

There is something to writing with hand. All of my brainstorming happens when I write with hand. I then move over to my computer when I get solid ideas. I have templates to do my journaling, prayer journal, notebook and project proposals.

I was initially interested in the remarkable 2, but when they introduced a monthly subscription for basic functionality I'd need out of it, that was just a dealbreaker for me.
My next target was the Supernote A5, but it was simply too expensive for me.
But then the Kindle Scribe came out, and by the time I discovered it had gotten several updates to add the functionality I needed, and I got a refurbished one at an excellent price, and absolutely love it.
But it really is a shame about the remarkable subscription.

I've slid between platforms for so long - Mac - Windows - still use both. The M Series Macs have been well and truly the most impressive laptops I have ever owned. I bought a M1 Macbook Air at the end of 2020 and it still outperforms a 2024 Surface Laptop we just bought for my school executive. The biggest difference was the lack of heat. Sitting in the warm summer of Sydney with a laptop on one's knee is unpleasant. This Macbook Air produces hardly any heat.
On another topic, thanks for your video; I will purchase a Boox Note Air 3C based on your recommendations. I have dabbled and been an iPad advocate for so long, but I can't justify their use anymore. This will be my first e-ink markup tablet, so we'll see how it goes.

Thanks, I'll look forward to your thoughts on the NA3C! I've been considering a Mac laptop since the M1, but still not sure it's worth switching operating systems.

@@KitBetts-Masters, I don't think you'll have to. Very soon, we'll see the first Snapdragon X Elite-based laptops running ARM Windows. They have all the speed and power efficiencies of the M series Mac processors but run Windows. Maybe eventually, we'll see an e-ink device running one. This should massively increase speed and battery life.

I guess there is a case of All Purpose Eink versus Specialized einks. I am still in the specialized eink camp as most of the apps on the all purpose version doesn't provide all the basic functions in one place. For example Boox is the leader in the all purpose category but the apps available are not as good as those on an Ipad (Apple has attracted some good quality apps). The Boox native app is still far from perfect. While I am a RM 2 owner, if I had to buy a new eink today, the Supernote with new hardware would top the list. They provide some really cool use cases as a more of a specialized eink platform. Boox could do well for consumption in color, but still not there yet compared with an IPad. So good for flexibility but lacks character.

For me the most important thing is that it should be possible to have content around devices. As I use a fold4 and a surface go3 I went for the Boox as I can use OneNote. I do run into issues from time to time. The new beta firmware in the Ultra C (v3.4) does fix a lot of the issues.

    • @Snoogle2

I use tags on the reMarkable to organize Folders, PDFs, Notebooks, eBooks and even single Pages. Using the Tags view on my reMarkable I have an overview about my content, no matter if it is a single page of an eBook or a handwritten note - this is awesome and unique to the reMarkable system!

    • @KitBetts-Masters

at least on the Boox I‘m not able to use Tags on eBooks or on PDFs and not on folders. Don‘t get me wrong, the Boox is a power machine. The reMarkable is so easy to use, unified file storage (all type of files in a single folder), almost identical tool bars and capabilities for all types of files. It‘s really not so easy to decide: focus on easy to use or an all-can-do device with cumbersome handling…

we just need a reMarkable 3 (more RAM, more CPU power, a fingerprint sensor) and Version 4 of their SW (a REAL major release upgrade) incl. global text search, more tools e. g. mirroring of a selection, more shapes, more pens available in the toolbar without sub-menu). To have still a flat and lightweight reMarkable: no backlight, no speakers, no microphones, no Bluetooth, etc.

    • @VladimirKostek
      @VladimirKostek 4 месяца назад

Agree with shapes and more pen tools, I made an rM3 wishlist video with Kit where we discuss a lot of these. Btw mirroring is available with the lasso tool, just drag your selection from one corner past the opposite corner and it will invert or mirror 🪞

Boox should come up with a shortcut to cut all the functionalities off and leave there only the bare minimum for you:D
Every time you reset it (or maybe boot) it'd ask whether you want "distraction free" environment, and bumm! There you have it:D It would be even better, if it would lock you out of the full experience by creating a password if you want to switch between Full and DistractionFree environments, that you can claim and would be sent to your email.. the next day:D Or week.
The other thing is that ppl should be taught how to handle their problems with distractions, because life is tough, and maybe you have an RM2 to write and read, but you won't have an RM2 to deal with your kids, go to the shopping mall or whatever. Mental strategies are more important to have than always relying on gadgets for your needs. (Also this is the way you can flourish as a person in my opinion.. Be your own DistractionGuard!!)
