In 2012 I lunched/dined 3 or 4 times at La Coupole in the course a month's sojourn in the City of Lights. (I have known & loved this iconic brasserie since Sept of 1973, and have more than 30 or 40 subsequent visits under my belt). I noticed a downward trend when the brasserie was taken over by a group-chain in the late 1980s or early 90s. The 3 disasters of June 2012 have now consigned La Coupole to my backlist until further notice. On one of my visits, I arrived on time for my reservation only to be shown to the bar to the left. We were confined there for the next 45 minutes, waiting for "my" table to become available. I should have been "comped" the aperitifs. Semi-skilled service, one EU waiter from Eastern Europe speaking broken French, so we conversed in English when I asked for information on daily specials. I found many of front-of-house staff to be ill-informed and surly beyond the "norm" for Paris. One argued with me over the condition of a bottle of white wine - it was heavily oxidised, it's uninviting brown-hue a red flag even before smelling/tasting it. It should have been relisted as Chateau Ascertone! He tried to tell me that this was the winemaker's style of winemaking. Complete piffle on his part! The man was not a sommelier but a huckster who thought he could get away with bamboozling the customer. The half-lobster on my assiette de fruits de mer was "old" and well past its sell-by date; it smelled of ammonia. The sauce of my steak au poivre had split which must have been obvious to any visual inspection as it came out of the kitchen-pass. La Coupole has become a tourist trap. Caveat emptor.
