- My old buddy, Bamboo Ben, was able to finally make time to swing by the Breezeway. We've been trying to film an episode since the creation of this show, but he's seriously ALWAYS on the road building tiki bars.
Somebody recently said, 'I don't watch Spike's show because I don't drink.' That person is a big figure in the tiki scene... and I think this episode is a great example of a reason TO watch, even if you don't drink. Besides the spectacle of Ben and I getting loopy off of ONE cocktail (and some free-poured rum), there's a ton of tiki history discussed in this episode. Good stuff if you're into this world.

To make the the drink in the video you will need:

3/4 oz fresh squeezed lime juice
1/2 oz Don's Mix (two parts white grapefruit juice to one part cinnamon-infused sugar syrup)
1/2 oz falernum
1/4 oz grenadine
1 dash St George absinthe
1 dash Angostura bitters
2 oz Ron Zacapa 23
1 oz Worthy Park 108
1 oz Lemonhart 151

Mix for 8 seconds and pour into a 14oz zombie glass.
Garnish with mint and Luxardo cherry

I’ve been to Hugman’s Oasis a few times. There are a lot of skulls there. It’s one of my favorite places on the Riverwalk.
Been to Tiki Tom's a few times before it was 'fixed'. Sounds like I'll have to make a trip back to Walnut Creek. (which, by the way is 10 minutes north of Danville, Ca, up highway 680.)

Really interesting video, Spike! I've heard Bamboo Ben's name a bizillion times, and of course know his work, but have never seen what he looks like. Please have him on again to talk more about his grandfather! I sort of miss your hanging foliage getting in your tall guest's way.
I think the first time I saw Ben's name was at the Jan & Dean’s Tiki Lounge in the Ruby's on the Huntington Beach pier. Wonder what happened or will happen to all the stuff there.

Ben is the best. Got 2 of the tiki farm anniversary shelves he made for that gallery show and a mini bar by him. Ben is like the Ramones of tiki, solid all the way through.

A bunch of years ago Ben had a contest to name a bar in his shop. I entered Hale 'Ohe (House of Bamboo in Hawaiian) and won! Got a Bamboo Ben t-shirt and sticker, which was pretty cool, as well as coupon for a free beer at the bar, but never got around to visiting before he closed it down.
We had some good times at his Shop!
If I had the ready cash, I'd definitely have a home tiki bar!!!!!

Having been to tiki bars in both San Diego and Hawaii, classic and modern, what I find lacking in many is the connection to "Polynesian culture" in both food and decor. Tiki aficionados play fast-n-loose with an ancient RELIGION they know nothing about, and nobody is providing any education. Old-school Tiki bars were America's first serious adventure into Chinese and South-Asian cuisine.....half the bars I've been-to don't even serve food, and the ones that do offer things like wings and french-fries. Pathetic. Drink-craft is VERY robust, more bars should partner with mug-makers.
