- In the 100+ videos that I've made about vintage tiki cocktails, there have been a few that have left me scratching my head. This recipe is by far the king of the bizarre. I dare you to make this along with the video.
In this episode, I also tell the legend of the mighty Kahiki in Columbus, Ohio. Some of these midcentury tiki palaces were just above and beyond the rest and the Kahiki is certainly one of those.
I hope you dig the show. Aloha!
To make the the drink in the video you will need:
--------------------------------------
1/2 oz fresh squeezed lime juice
1/2 oz fresh squeezed lemon juice
1 oz fresh squeezed orange juice
1/2 oz papaya juice
1 1/2 oz coconut milk
1 1/2 oz Lemonhart 151
2 oz spiced rum
2oz lager beer
--------------------------------------
Shake and pour into a Kahiki Headhunter mug.
Garnish with pineapple cube skewered to a maraschino cherry

Best show on youtube. How are only 12k people subscribed? If you like tiki you need to be watching Spike.
Thank you so much, Alison.
Let’s flashback about 40 years to any given Sunday. It’s wintertime in cold bleak Ohio and my dad is driving us 50 miles to the west, as we did every Sunday for as long as I can remember, to spend the evening at the Kahiki.
It was one of those family traditions that you loved at the time, but you didn’t realize how impactful those nights out with the family were. I think my dad was secretly looking for celebrities.
Every Sunday, like clockwork, we would cross the little river at the entrance of the Kahiki and be transported to another place. The smell of the food, the fiery drinks, the rain wall, the aquariums, the massive Moai fireplace, and the mystery girl 😍. It never got old, and the entire family got to pause life for a bit and share some pu-pu’s.
What a wonderful memory
When I was a kid my family would go to Kahiki at least once a week. My grandfather made sure we sat at the table in front of that moai fireplace. That moai always freaked me out staring down at me. To this day, I vividly remember how incredibly themed that place was.
Ah cool, I love hearing the stories about this place.
Lol. Birding around with his birds
Grew up at the Kahiki. My Mom would sing there on the weekends, I was able to feed the fish, play behind the bar and run around down stairs. We celebrated birthdays and ate at the Sunday brunch all the time. Definitely sad it’s gone.
Thanks for sharing
We've been collecting Kahiki food & drink recipes for years -- ever since we first walked the bridge into the place. Some of them are real zingers, and all of them have some kind of "special" ingredient like this one.
Must be so many people that worked there and regular customers that have good memories.
A new drink: The Ice Bucket! "In the bucket it was served in!" (And, yes, it's a great show.)
Big Mahalo! Couldn’t agree more about the Kahiki! Thanks for showing our books! It really means a great deal to us to keep the spirit and memory of the Kahiki alive! 🗿❤️🗿
maybe it was an initiation drink? haha
love the coors yellow bellies!
As a sailor in the Pacific, trips to tropical paradise were SOP. Whether it was Oahu, Guam, Singapore, The Philippines, or elsewhere, I went to many. I can't tell you how great some of the old bars were before modernization ruined them.
But I bring that up because of the drink glasses and mugs that were so prominently featured on Tiki bar menus.
As a sailor, there was no way I was getting a drink served in a coconut shell with a flower in it. They seemed like such a tourist thing to order, and the furthest thing from my desire. But I did like rum (of course - sailor), and the Mai Tai was a go to for my first drink. Though after that it was beer, as sailors don't have much money.
Now I sort of wish I had ordered the drinks and bought the mugs from all those places which have been swallowed up by the modern world. Imagine the collection I could have!
Wow I can't believe you're only at 20K subscribers a year later. You deserve better Spike! I'm doing my part to spread the word man.
I appreciate that 🙏
Sounds like something for the midwest tastes demanding beer.
The bird’s name was Sam. I worked for the avian veterinarian that took care of him. One time he boarded with us for a month and it was like having a celebrity in the building. Everyone knew who he was!!
Haha.... that's amazing
Oh Kahiki, how we central Ohioans miss it! It was closed in 2000 so the frozen foods side of the business could be concentrated on, and a Walgreens could be built on the site (which itself has recently closed IIRC). Plans were to reopen the Kahiki in some fashion, but they never came to fruition. Great vid and tribute to the old bygone girl! Another Kahiki drink that makes me scratch my head is the Polynesian Spell.
Cleveland had the Kon Tiki (before my time) and my understanding is that much of their glassware is now at the tiki bar Porco in Cleveland. It is nice enough, but I have to say that the best tiki bar I have been to is Psycho Suzi’s in Minneapolis. Large bar, great decor for inside seating, large outside patio with tiki hut seating next to the river. It’s a pretty big place. They have a great neon sign over the bar that says “Mender of Broken Dreams”. That is a very cool place and a must-visit anytime we’re up there.
I had a feeling this drink was going to be weird! Great show, a throwback to the early days! Proving once again that you don’t always need a guest to have a good episode 🤙
A very odd cocktail!! But love the storytelling and Tiki education Spike!
My dad was known as 'the bird guy' every time he was stuck in traffic. Sorry everyone
Great episode as usual Spike!!!!
😂
I have one of those mugs and love it. One of my favorite vintage designs.👍🗿
Back then you couldn't legally get Coors in the Midwest. My grandpa used to bring cases home to Iowa in the 70s.
Loved the history lesson. As always another entertaining show Spike!
Glad you enjoyed it
This is great! I just did a video featuring the Port Light and I included a distilled history of the Kahiki. Wish I was able to visit before it shuttered. Cheers!! 🤙🏽🍹🗿
Amazing as usual! Such a great show and with such and interesting story line every time, you rock and i love all the Tiki history and can't wait till i have my own Tiki bar soon Mahalo spikes breezeway.
Another great episode and solo! Had to share this episode with friends on F.B. Cheeky and adorable!
This is one of your most entertaining videos. If I was playing around with this recipe, I'd start out by eliminating the beer and the lemon juice. Papaya juice would be next on the hit list, and coconut milk after that (maybe replace with a smaller amount of cream of coconut?)
Totally agree
I think Dave could handle a trip, no problem.
Yeah, I've tried to make tiki drinks using coconut milk, but Coco Lopez "Cream of Coconut" (which is pretty much just coconut fat mixed with sugar) always tastes 20x better!
Congrats on 12k! Love the tiki lore and the scene you painted with the Kahiki, cheers!
Thank you very much!
Interesting drink !
Another amazing video.
Thanks so much!
As someone from ohio I absolutely loved this,my go to is porco in Cleveland
Oh! Ohio Tiki is missing one! The Erie Kai!! The woman who owns it doesn't care about tiki which makes me weep!! There's imported furniture from Bali! It could really be something amazing! OMG, first time watcher, thought you were a master tiki drink maker but using that coconut milk (which is crap and then kraken) Whoah! Love you tho toots!! You braved this drink!!
Haha... the recipe is the recipe 🤷🏻♂️
We saw the Erie Kai in the first weeks it opened, and everything about it was incredible ... except for the country music, the bright lighting, and the Budweiser menu. There's too little tiki in that lovely bit of Ohio's Vacationland, and the Erie Kai gave us hope ... since even most of the fantastic nautical places on the lake have long shuttered. But alas, the people there seem to want it to be a biker bar. They took the sign down recently and renamed it, so we're not sure how much 'tiki' is left inside...
Spoke, just talked to mom -she and my dad had an anniversary dinner there in 1969. As the story goes, mom had ordered some meatballs - one fell off the plate and game mom a scar on her arm!
First time viewer. So far, so good. I'll keep watching.... and I did subscribe.
Thanks, Jose!!
You asked Siri if Ohio was in the midwest and my Siri answered. Scare the sh%t out me. Haha.
Hahahaha... that happened like six times while I was editing the video.
Thanks for doing a Kahiki episode, Spike! Such a fascinating place. I would’ve loved this place, but this drink - not so sure! 😄
I share your pain - I was about the same age when I heard about the Kahiki closing party, but lacked the means to go at the time. I really wish I had gotten to see it. Don’t wait - visit these places while you have the ability!
I gagged when you said beer!
It's a novelty drink and some menus need those drinks. It's a head scratcher that grows on you it's a pillar of a complete menu. Thanks for the killer vid spike. I wouldn't choose kraken but kraken is way over vanilla in my book(and tons of sugar that's given me one of the worst hangovers ever) but who cares if what you like is in the drink, it's correct.
Old monk is a great spised rum. Give that a try maybe.....
Nuts!! Yeah, that sounds gross. Thanks for taking one for the team 😁
Hahahaha... yuck.
I've seen enough. I'm moving back to 1962.
"This drink tastes like nonsense!" 🤣🤣🤣
You’re a Coors man, Spike? I recommend Vermont’s own Switchback Ale, or any Switchback variety.
Hey, Spike. Have you tried the Kirkland spiced rum from Costco? We prefer it to Kraken, which is definitely our preference over Capt. Morgan. It's inexpensive, too. 🙂
Sparky stole the show.
I tend to run away from beer cocktails
Me too
Was the Mexican food place you’re talking about Kalaveras by any chance? I miss the Chili Pepper
Coconut milk. As you read, can says it separates.. you poured separated coconut milk. Should have dumped the glass and started over with proper prepared coconut milk
texas tiki bars next, hugmans and tiki tatsuya
try making it with coconut cream and mango syrup instead of coconut milk and papaya juice next time. Also use Captain Morgan Private Stock instead of Kraken.
No thanks. I'm done with this drink.
More Bird guys!
😂
Haha, this made me lol, as a non born in Ohio Ohioan and Columbusite (?) . Especially outtakes 😂.
So they leveled it to make way for Walgreens, not rite aid, which has also closed now.
Please do another Kahiki episode.
Also, I was about the same age, and I was a broke college student so I couldn't afford going in general before they closed, and also the ticket price for final night was $$, so I never made it!!! I was so close 😭😭.
Coors wasn't available in Ohio in the 60s.
Your recipe isn't even close! That is crazy!😂
Isn't even close to what? It's a recipe that the Kahiki posted on their FB page.
Linda, your name sounds familiar. Did you work at the Kahiki?
Who would have thought tiki would be popular in Ohio.
If you think of Tiki as escapism, Ohio makes the MOST sense… California is already semi tropical, ya know?
Coors isn’t a real lager. It’s watered down American mass market beer. The cocktail drink is like my attempt at being a bartender. Usually a massive mistake. The only time I gotten plastered at Hawaii is at Germain’s luau. I never gotten into tiki bars, but I can appreciate the effort, which is overwhelming. The decor is over the top. I went to a tiki bar just outside Honolulu International Airport a few decades ago. Pretty interesting.
Was TikiCat but sadly is no more
Yeah Page 52 of the Grog Log by Jeffy Berry, has the right recipe...the spiced rum probably ruined it
I'm guessing that this recipe must've been from the 70s or 80s. Sounds like an opportunity for a redemption video!
@@BreezewayCocktailHour
Yeah probably! Still enjoyed the video as usual
Updated breezeway tour?
When it’s finished of course
I think someone was pulling your leg online. Then again Skyline Chili is a thing in Ohio so who knows
The Kahiki official Facebook page posted it. 🤷🏻♂️
Dude. The recipe seems insane. The kraken Is bad. Make your own spiced rum.
Gonna sell glassware again?
coming soon.
@@BreezewayCocktailHour Yessss!
If you would appreciate a little feedback. I love your channel, i'm subscribed, I like all your shows. I'm not so keen on the Spike and The Camera segment at the end. I usually end watching. Personally i'd cut it out. It makes the video too long and your editing is great, so why bother showing it? Just be maybe one of the reason the channel isn't as successful as it could be.
Interesting thoughts. Thanks for your feedback.
You failed to bring fresh ingredients
Are you referring to the papaya and coconut milk? Everything else was fresh squeezed on camera.
You clearly don't know how many Tiki bars there were in Chicago in the heyday.
Beachbum Barry's Recipe:
- Lime juice
- Papaya nectar
- Peach nectar
- Honey Mix
- Demerara rum
- 151 rum
- Gold P.R. rum
- Crushed ice
You did it wrong.
Enjoy the mug.
Tommy thank god you didn’t put yourself out and list the quantities 🤦♀️
That’s a recipe from the Hawaii Kai in NY according to the BBTT app
You listed a recipe from the wrong bar, YOU did it wrong. 😏
I saw this recipe on their Facebook page while looking for Kahiki Cocktails, and I have my doubts about it being legitimate. It matches up perfectly with a generic "Headhunter" recipe I saw elsewhere online, and having asked their Facebook and Instagram if they still had access to their cocktail recipes, they told me that they did not. There's a ramen place in Columbus that's owned by the son of the Kahiki's final owner, and they're currently serving the Kahiki Mai Tai. Knowing that, I assume that the recipes stayed in the family, and the cocktails shared on their Facebook were pulled from the web and not the archives.
Maybe 🤷🏻♂️
