Love your humour Bruce. I'm only a pretend Aussie but been in Perth more than half my 73 years. Just found your site, and keen on making a pulse jet. Wish me luck...
Got my HK Pulse Jet and the welds are very good. I'll try to take some pictures. As a machinist the price of $99.00 USD is a no brainer to buy this. And with your post on how to make reeds, Well I have just put a order in for .006" spring steel and a SS at .050" thick. I then ordered another one jet. My 13 year old son is all jazzed up about this. We are checking out control line PJ flying. Now we just need to find a club and field in South eastern Washington State to fly at. Man dose this bring back fun memories when I was 13 years old. Sounds like HK listen to your comments on the welds.
Despite everything people might say about HK - they are commercially aware. Bet we see improved welding in the next batch plus reed valves as spares. Only happens when you get a decent up front review. Well done Bruce.
If the grumpy old men ever found out how much damage my trusty Raleigh 20 did to me then they would have banned it as being a weapon of mass destruction. Crushed me nuts everytime the chain came of, crushed fingers getting it back on. Broke a wrist, cracked a knee and skinned me back arsing off down the gorge at 75 clicks. Knocked off it by a car and run over. On the other hand, I only ever got a few prop scars from model planes that didn't require hospitalisation or surgery....
Like your observations on the grinding, Bruce. 'course, the main problem with that is when you 'smooth' the material, you can't help but thin out the parent metal. I can guarantee it's thinner in places around that seam. How thin is anyone's guess. Top review, mate.
As noted just a few videos ago, it was a prototype, not a production model. HK sent it to Bruce to evaluate, not review. I never miss one of Bruce's videos, because I've subscribed to his channels, and set up Chrome/Gmail to notify me every time my subscribed channels put out a new video. It's that easy.
The main reason clubs in the UK ban pulse jets isn't because they're dangerous. It's because they're so noisy they're a really effective way of losing a flying site. They're used for control line models at the UK Nationals at RAF Barkston Heath. We camp about 400n away from the speed circle and there's no doubt when a pulse jet starts, Great fun, I admit, but very, very neighbour hostile.
great video bruce. i was thinking, it would be nice if scaled composites made their own line of scale or otherwise model planes, so that the public could learn what real airplanes are supposed to fly like. love that long ez, although i would prob go with electric, but love to watch the pulsejet action. glad you point out the legitimate safety concerns. so much of safety this days is about hype, and paranoia. it's so illogical. thaks for a continuous reality check. cheers!
I got a bit excited when I first saw this product, but was skeptical of the quality. Thanks for reviewing it so quickly. Like you said, for $99, what the hell? Looking forward to seeing this thing run on your channel!
Your knowledge of electronics and and planes in general is amazing. Your bench is set up a lot like mine. Yes I am a retired electronic engineer. I have just entered the RC plane hobby and love it. I do create my own Tx and Rx long range equipment Keep the info coming. Again thank you. PS don't tell the FCC hahaha
I have an Hobbico Avistar trainer, and i have to say that it´s TONS of fun!!! a really great plane, it has a semi-symmetric aerofoil that lets you do more aerobatics than a regular trainer, but still very stable and easy to fly. Back to pulse jets, flight time depends on the fuel tank capacity, but usually no more than 4 minutes of flight. Pulse jets aren´t very fuel efficent.
Hi Bruce :), If Google's changed your RUclips and merged it with Google+ then you can revert back to having your RUclips page without all of the confusing stuff. All you need to do is click the icon in the top right corner, then click "RUclips settings" and you should see a blue link on the page you are directed to saying, "Temporarily disconnect RUclips from Google+" or something like that, so just click it and well the rest is safe explanatory :) :) Hope this helps :)
Maybe the workers are getting paid .69 US cents per hour to make these things, like on 20/20 here in the USA when they showed Chinese factories making ladies nylons. The gal was getting 69 cents an hour and had to make something like 4,000 pairs in a 8hr shift. Don't think quality control goes with a $100 price tag.
yay! another part 1! I love your videos bruce, they're informative and entertaining, but please PLEASE finish some of your other "part ones" before starting anything new?
Bruce - helpful and informative review - many thanks. However I don't believe model aircraft clubs and governing bodies around the world dislike pulse jets because they are significantly more dangerous than other model engines, but because they are so noisy. I would like to operate a pulse jet myself someday, but would not be very welcome at any of our local flying sites, as the resulting noise complaints would inevitably lead to loss of those sites for model flying. Keep up the good work. PD
Maybe pulse jets sound awesome to you. And yes, they are awesome, but they also have some issues: They have a very narrow thrust range. Basically they cant be throttled. Its full power or nothing. They get EXTREMELY hot, and are VERY loud, so they are banned in some places. And finally, most pulsejet models fly really fast, so they are not adequate for learning to fly. You have to start with a glow or electric plane anyways and have a lot of practice before flying a pulsejet equipped plane.
I have seen a big fire ball come out of the end of a Plus jet to Mach fuel I think. plus jets are really cool I what to build one one day out of a can.
These pulse jets are nothing but rubbish. The welded seam along the exhaust tube will open up. It's like ripping up $99. It's really weird, so many people showing this toy yet very few people actually starting them.
Last time I saw/heard a pulse jet was at the LMA Cosford a few years ago. The noise was heard several miles away so I don't think they are going to help with public relations unless you fly a looooooong way away from the neighbours.
Gonna need that part 2, proper setup. I suck fuel but I just don't have the air going right. Managed to get a couple pops but nothing solid, I think I'm flooding it. I am using an air compressor but I don't have a good hookup for it. do you still sell your ebook on pulsejetts?
Ok I'm up for it. Gonna try to mount o e on my sig wonder.... How much flight time can I expect. Of course I know that depends on tank size... But what tank do you run and how long us it good for. Also you mentioned.. Tank level compared to engine level... Doesn't that change in flight? Would it be better if you used a small fuel pump to keep the supply constant? Thanks anjs
We used to glue babies to the reactor housing on all of our nuclear reactors to detect hotspots. It took 256 babies to get a decent reading. Cost a fortune in hot glue though... (Note for overly literal idiots. This was a joke.)
Gosh Bruce you make me laugh. Safety vest. Now you can leave that to me. I spent my 30% of my life doing film work and now I find myself in a sand pit/ limestone quarry to make a living. If it weren't for RC and incidentally, your tutalage I would have lost my sense of humour by now. How exciting. I always wanted to do the build along with you to make a pulse jet and this will do nicely friend. BTW are you shooting against a spare wall?
this looks so much more affordable than electric jets or nitro and especially turbine. If I got an rc plane, it would have to be a pulse jet! Question: Can you fix the weld joints and bent tube with a dremel and vice? Do you think my parents will let me have one? lol
@RCModelReviews G'day Bruce... Yay Team ! Ecking Fuxellent Video, mate. I thoroughly enjoyificated every bit...; & I agree with your advice to Googoyle, regards YT... Ciao !
Bet there was some fool watching trying to unscrew a hex with a Philips screwdriver going 'oh yeah maybe this wont work, im a grumpy old man and im stupid' hahah, cheers for the unboxing
I love your channel. Too bad about NZ rules, regulations, they need to allow fly-at-your own risk, on other insurance options for the individual flyer. I just fly alone ....
that is cool! I want something a bit better than a trainer but not a 3d plane. now I really dont want a pulse jet given the 4 minutes of flight! I am also very interested in fpv and automatic flight control. I was thinking of a high wing airplane but not sure if that is very capable or not......
My great uncle was almost hit by one, if they hadnt evacuated the theatre to a shelter, they would have been gonners. Nevertheless, no harm done, so you have my permission! 😂
@mick7sp Done the mod - followed by "dscacheutil -flushcache" to save a reboot. No obvious difference to Facebook irritation levels yet.Good idea though. Alan
okay. I guess ill have to go get myself a trainer and start practicing. I don't have a flying field club or a personal trainer but I think I have watched enough youtube videos now. I have experience with 3d helicopters but no airplane experience. what would be a good trainer that I could do fpv with with and is fun to fly? back to pulse jets.... what sort of flight time do you get? is it very fuel efficient? is there an electronic inflight re starter in case of emergency? Thanks, Matthew
Perhaps the reason they are 'banned' is not because they are 'dangerous'....but because they make so much noise that they bring aero-modeling into disrepute.......?? unless you fly in a VERY remote location
(ran out of characters) There are not in-flight starters for pulse jets because you would need compressed air, and considering the fligh time it´s just not worth the additional weight.
Well... RC simulator helps but nothing replaces real life practice. What i mean is that pulse jet planes are VERY fast, hard to control and you always have to land with the engine stopped, so you don't have second chance. If you want to start with RC planes i suggest you to go to your local arc flying field, where you can get help in buying a plane, and finding someone to teach you how to fly it. I don't wanna be a jerk but a pulse jet plane is not a good idea if you never flew RC before.
Pity they did not copy a Bailey or Jet Bill Pulse Jet.Much better. The flowjector in this one is a bit basic. If you use a Bailey or Jet Bill sport jet flowjector with Methanol fuel your reeds will last much longer.Spark plug is to big also.Small is best
So true, Just think If there had been a Cave Owners Association. COA: Knock off that racket, what heck are you making anyways? Caveman: I going to call it a wheel. COA: Looks stupid and will never work. Knock off the noise.
Bruce, You need some of your own RCMR Warning stickers. "** WARNING ** Having fun while using a remote control aircraft may tick off MFNZ." "** WARNING ** MFNZ Rule 23 - Never place anything smaller than your elbow inside your ear while cleaning your RC aircraft." "** WARNING ** Use of Sicks, Stones, Sling Shots, Lawn Darts, Carbonated drinks or RC Aircraft may result in dead babies."
Yes good video,I share your irreverance for over enthusiastic elf and safety warnings, what happened to common sense. Soon we will buy a carving knife it will caution,"Sharp edges can cause cuts". And my all time favourite, the bag of nuts on an airline, with the the caution "Warning may contain nuts". I should bloody well hope so.
Love your humour Bruce. I'm only a pretend Aussie but been in Perth more than half my 73 years. Just found your site, and keen on making a pulse jet. Wish me luck...
You sense of humor is spot on today my friend, kracking me up big time. Keep up the good work.
Hi Bruce,
Great video, have been looking at these but have never used one so very keen to see your next 'part' videos on this pulse jet.

Do love that packaging. It's certainly a throwback box, back to the days of control line models and really expensive radios.
I have one of these from the 1960s !! Always wanted to strap it to a rc airplane with fpv.
The main reason clubs in the UK ban pulse jets isn't because they're dangerous. It's because they're so noisy they're a really effective way of losing a flying site.

Please post pulse jet review #2.
I own one and won't do anything until I see your next review, hopefully seeing it powered up.
Thank you
I love your attitude mate, more people should view the world as simply as that. :)
Big Bruce, I knew you'd end up reviewing this turbine!! Excellent!!
bear in mined hk have only started production on this product so the quality is likely to improve on each engine
Bruce: Please show us an easy way to build a remote shut off valve. That is a must on this or any other pulse jet project..
You the man for online dyi PJ,
Keep rattling the cage!!
Love the way Bruce's face lights up when he gets his hands on a jet! Where's the HK Turbine? I recon an explanation is needed...
haha i have to say you are very funny, love watching your videos! this was very helpful as well as all your pulse jet videos!
Kids don't try this at home. You could kill your neighbors baby. That's the best line I've heard in months!
LOL, I have to disagree ;-p the line, "It could kill you to death... and any baby you were holding at the time" had me in stitches!!
LOVE IT MY FRIEND,I COULDNT STOP LAUGHING,GREAT REVIEW AS WELL
Hahaha! You're a scream! Very interesting and broad knowledge too! Subscribed! Thank you! Rob
Since that video clip was taken in the distant past, that would be hard to argue.

I love your channel. Too bad about NZ rules, regulations, they need to allow fly-at-your own risk, on other insurance options for the individual flyer. I just fly alone ....
how about using this as a base and "improve it" round the inside and such :P
buy the screwdriver form factor allen keys from hobbyking, they are brilliant!
that is cool! I want something a bit better than a trainer but not a 3d plane. now I really dont want a pulse jet given the 4 minutes of flight! I am also very interested in fpv and automatic flight control. I was thinking of a high wing airplane but not sure if that is very capable or not......
Very interesting Bruce. I want to make a model V1 but I'm wondering if that may be a bit insensitive on account they killed people during the war.
My great uncle was almost hit by one, if they hadnt evacuated the theatre to a shelter, they would have been gonners. Nevertheless, no harm done, so you have my permission! 😂
Can you strap it to a base plate and use it as a static engine?
where can we find plans from that old rc delta plane they used to put pulsejets on them...??? cant find anything... plz help...
@mick7sp
Done the mod - followed by "dscacheutil -flushcache" to save a reboot. No obvious difference to Facebook irritation levels yet.Good idea though.
Alan
I'd want to re-weld the casing before I even test-ran the engine.
We went through months of QC samples before putting this to market. You can trust the welds on these
when's part 2 coming? need to see this running?
okay. I guess ill have to go get myself a trainer and start practicing. I don't have a flying field club or a personal trainer but I think I have watched enough youtube videos now.

would it possible to cnc the tube? If so, could it be alot more accurate?
possibly flitetest cracken wing for pulse jet to be irresponsible but would be awesome
So is it worth it just for the valve body?
Cheap is Bro LOL !
Might be a good idea to test run it at a distance Bruce
I'm scared. Did the engine come with plans for a reenforced concrete bunker to operate this death trap from?
Thanks for the info .
Perhaps the reason they are 'banned' is not because they are 'dangerous'....but because they make so much noise that they bring aero-modeling into disrepute.......?? unless you fly in a VERY remote location
Models - I'm thinking V2 - or is it too soon?
Interesting. I have many hours of experiance on rc simulator but no real life. Only problem I see is the narrow thrust range :(
I new a old timer that bolted a Dyna jet to the close line & didnt the nabours know it.
what ever happened to that hobby king turbine? did you ever get it running?
(ran out of characters)
There are not in-flight starters for pulse jets because you would need compressed air, and considering the fligh time it´s just not worth the additional weight.
You need more danger stickers for yourself Bruce, you can never have enough lol.
Great video. I am very tempted by one of these but was worried about killing babies. Your video has calmed my fears.
Well... RC simulator helps but nothing replaces real life practice.

Bruce, did you manage to run the Hobbyking turbine?
Fuel used x thrust fpt?
Bruce, You need some of your own RCMR Warning stickers.
"** WARNING ** Having fun while using a remote control aircraft may tick off MFNZ."
"** WARNING ** MFNZ Rule 23 - Never place anything smaller than your elbow inside your ear while cleaning your RC aircraft."
"** WARNING ** Use of Sicks, Stones, Sling Shots, Lawn Darts, Carbonated drinks or RC Aircraft may result in dead babies."
Anyone recommend a good first model?
I see you really like those warning stickers. :D
they just should've used a piece of pipe there?
Where are you auctioning the warning stickers? I am willing to pay a high price.
(cont.) Besides, what else can MFNZ do to Bruce that it already hasn't?
Exactly!
Nice one Bruce :)
This guy is badass

O.M.G world is full of dangers!!! I,m staying home...
Flying in the face of common sense, I'm holding my 6 week old daughter while watching this vid. So far so good though...
Agree, Google don't mess RUclips up.
10:15. WATCH OUT!! There's a whole bunch of air in that box!!!
A new law from Brussels in Europe has legislated that pulse jet engines must not exceed 45Db (decibels)
Normal office noise is generally 50 Dbs, I don't think something is correct in your info
I fart louder than 45Db.
After hearing you say that looking at a pulsejet would kill 1000 babies, americas family planning department bought 50 of them. One for each state.
Fire it up!!!
