The clouds rush by, the oaks roar,
The maiden rests on the green by the shore
as wave breaks with force, with force
And she sighs into the gloomy night.
eyes blurred with tears.
"My heart has died, the world is empty,
no wishes left to me in this life,
oh, gods take your child back,
I have relished earthly bliss,
I have lived and loved."
The tears run down to no end,
Mourning will not bring back the dead,
Tell me what eases the ache
For sweet love's lost passion.
I, the heavenly, will not deny it.

Who rides, so late, through night and wind?
It is the father with his child.
He has the boy well in his arm
He holds him safely, he keeps him warm.
"My son, why do you hide your face so anxiously?"
"Father, do you not see the Erl king?
The Erl king with crown and tail?"
"My son, it's a wisp of fog."
"You dear child, come, go with me!
Very lovely games I'll play with you;
Many colourful flowers are on the shore,
My mother has many golden robes."
"My father, my father, and don't you hear
What Erl king quietly promises me?"
"Be calm, stay calm, my child;
The wind is rustling through withered leaves."
"Do you want to come with me, pretty boy?
My daughters shall wait on you finely;
My daughters will lead the nightly dance,
And rock and dance and sing you to sleep."

Erl king's daughters in the gloomy place?"
"My son, my son, I see it clearly:
There shimmer the old willows so grey."
"I love you, your beautiful form entices me;
And if you're not willing, then I will use force."

Erl king has done me some harm!"
It horrifies the father; he swiftly rides on,
He holds the moaning child in his arms,
Reaches the farm with trouble and hardship;
In his arms, the child was dead.

Practice?? I didnt see any practicing. I just saw and heard a flawless performance!
The grace of your hands is a rare beauty - they are ballet at the highest level. You were so correct in ignoring your teachers' that wanted to "correct" your technique. I believe ultimately, "If you meet Budah in the middle of the road, kill him." In other words, follow your heart and let your hands "sing." There is tremendous feeling and emotion within the hands and it must be embraced and let out to run free. Valentina, you are amazing - I'm giving you a big internet hug!

I am a great fan of "huge" piano players like Richter, Horowitz, Backhaus and so on, but Mrs. Valentina Lisitsa is beyond category, pure nature, freedom, beauty, I am very impressed!

Absolutely love your rendition of this piece . Hard to imagine a better interpretation, the perfect balance of passion and control and power, yet *delicate* even in the forte and fortissimo passages. Your soul has the many layers needed to play the music like you do, you read every bit of beauty and bring it forward. And is mesmerizing (lucky us) to be able to see you while you play -the motion of your hands and arms is art on itself. Thank you ! And you are so young ! Time will bring even more

This is beautiful! I love your interpretation, using the complex "periphery" in a very sustaining manner. It is worthy of Liszt, as always! You're my favorite Liszt interpreter :)
Extraordinary performance! Your playing of Erlkönig really depicts the image of a swift bike riding in the wind! With the tension rising and falling, this is breathtaking! One of my favourite choral works! Thank you! The elf bits were nice too, the mystical feeling can be just slightly more hyperbolic if you like!

You make me simultaneously want to never play piano again, and keep playing until I can play such pieces are you are playing. You have such an ease of playing that it seems like you merely caress and it sings the song for you. (perhaps this is true). Also, Erlkönig is one of my favorite songs, and you did it wondrously. And, the music itself is simply divine showcasing the full spectrum of emotion and passion. This music also showcases the fantastic range of abilities Valentina showcases - like no one else today.

Published in 1782 by Goethe, this poem was off the chart and captured the imagination of many of the world's greatest composers and performers. It is still chilling today. _Can you imagine how shocking it was back then???_
