    My Illusion wizard is a singer, and he summons 3 smaller versions of himself on his shoulder to make a barbershop quartet. That's his favourite use of minor illusion (I love the both visual and sound part, it makes it so much better).

      Nice, Mirror image could work too. For a big show you don't want to disappoint those adoring fans if your booked for a show and have to go adventuring instead, Programmed Illusion, D&D's equivalent of the music video :)

      I don’t think you can use minor illusion to do this. Minor illusion does not allow for movement, so while according to RAW you could have three versions of yourself, and sounds they wouldn’t actually appear to be singing. You would probably want major image for what you’re trying to achieve.

    • @haukness
      @haukness 28 дней назад

      @@mf5220 It doesnt but most DM's will allow you to do things like this in situations where it has no effect in the game outside of flavor. We one time used minor illusion to help "Weekend at Bernies" a corpse. Totally outside of the realm of allowability but it was creative enough that the DM rolled with it.

    The problem I have with illusions is players and sometimes a DM will behave as if they or npc have batman levels of reasoning and do an hours worth of thinking and prodding in a split second to instantly see through or handwave the illusion so it does nothing.
    Like hell i know the barbarian charges enemies head first, but its meta gaming to position him in a way that he runs through the illusion, show no kind of surprise, and continues at a target beyond, the barb had no reason to belive it to be an illusion and should have stopped adjacent to it and spent an action, like swipe his weapon into thin air.

      Make them use "their action" to discern if something is an illusion. (Especially if the spell says so.) To me metagaming would ruin the deployment of such tactics in a game. Unless the barbarian is aware of the illusion....require him to use "agency" to pay for the privilege's of discovery. I'm sure someone will argue about using "interactions" as not costing "an action". But some degree of believable results need to be adjudicated. No person runs through a brick wall (except a firefighter) to chase down the goblin in a nearby tunnel. Realistically.....the barrier would mentally deter the action. But if the Barbarian has a 4 INT.....go for it.

      I think illusions (as well as spells like darkness) suffer from the combat being played on a map. It let's players and GM metagame.
      If it was theatre of the mind and you had described something appearing in front of you etc the reaction would be much appropriate in most cases.

    Hello, my favourite Bard! I'm gonna create a illusionist bard. This character concept seems amazing to me because it's all about deception, performance, illusions and enchantments. First I was gonna create an arcane trickster but it was trying to be too many things at the same time. Then I started to think about making an absolute arcane bardstard :D Half elf College of Lore bard with the actor feat at level 4 is gonna be so much fun, I can't wait. My character has been on a run from his foster home for couple of years because of they tried to sell him to slavery instead giving him shelter. That's why my character has a lot of trust issues and always tries to look and sound like someone else and because of the betrayal is very paranoid. He will gradually trust people but it's hard. My bard is more of an actor than a singer. Because of the charlatan background he has proficiency in disguise kit and forgery kit. He can create very good disguises both magically and non-magically. Depending on the occasion he will disguise himself from seducting Femme Fatale to smelly street bum. I'm really excited for this type of character because the DM is going to give us the players creative freedom, so basically sandbox. Anyways, thanks for your excellent videos and greetings from Finland. Keep up the good work! :)

  • @goose6752

    There's no mention of the phantasmal force spell, which you don't even need illusionist abilities to make better. You can do the cage a flyer trick to make it fall w/o needing to make it real because the target believes its real. You can entomb a target, the ground opens up swallows them 50' under and closes about them crushing them for psychic damage, rendering them blind and deafened to everything around them, and restrained, and any damage your allies do to them will be believed to be resulting from the crushing rock.
    Simple Illusion: you can create a small fog cloud (heavy concealment) that you can move about the battlefield as needed, that you and your allies can easily see through (you should have advantage on the investigate check because you'll know its an illusion) and its immune to the touch test because of course you can walk through fog or smoke. And since the spell solid fog from 3.5 didn't make it into 5th, there's got to be some way to use make it real to make it solid.

    • @DrowBard
      @DrowBard  6 лет назад +1

      Well though out , I miss solid fog.

      Not sure as dm I’d set the precedent that some illusions are immune to being detected when interacted with. Illusions are already powerful enough.

    • @colinsmith1495
      @colinsmith1495 5 лет назад +1

      Per the spell description, they can use their ACTION to make an Investigation check against the spell DC. That seems to be bog standard for 5E illusions, except this one is much more easy to justify them failing the investigation check.
      I mean, an illusory wall that they can stick their hands through, it's easy for a DM to say that was the action and it's an auto-succeed. But in this case, the illusion is in their own minds. They 'push their hand into it' and they actually feel it and perceive their hand stopping, not because Illusion, but because *delusion*.
      Learn a little about psychology and you can realize just how horrifying Phantasmal Force can legitimately be.

    If you use a 6th level spell slot to cast Major Image you don't have to concentrate on the illusion and instead of a 10 minute duration it lasts until dispelled. Think of how this would combo with the 6th level Illusionist's feature Malleable Illusions.
    A forever illusion (basically) that you can change pretty much at will (1 action) to do almost anything (limited only by imagination and the constraints of the spell).

    Illusion, abjuration, and conjuration are my favorite schools for a reason.
    Illusion: promotes creativity and dickery
    Conjuration: make tools for people to use like a key or lock pick tools. Plus with plenty of teleportation and summoning spells for dickery. And at level 14 your find familiar could arguably win a fight with a guard. +30 temp hp FTW. Oh and lots of my favorite spells like Galder tower exist
    Abjuration: loxodon wizard put all points into CON and INT. You are going to be aggravating to kill.

    Mirage Arcane. Turn everything within a mile into a zero gravity zone. Cover it in thorns or lava, then make it real. If the DM won't let it cause damage, just make the viscosity real. A mile of difficult terrain goes a long way (pun intended)!

    • @gisaku33
      @gisaku33 6 лет назад +7

      Gravity isn't something that Mirage Arcane can effect, it can create structures/terrain with smells/sounds/taste etc, but not affect the laws of physics. Besides that, illusory reality only can make objects real, not phenomena.

    Illusion warlock and bard both with phantasmal force. Exploring a ruined temple wrecked by a dragon recently that was home to a bunch of orcs. Welp huge group of orcs was between us and the boss so we both used phantasmal force to make a dragon to scare the orcs while the cleric and paladin rattled their armor. We rolled a natural 20 and the orcs rolled a 1, and the bard who was a dragonborn used her breath weapon once we were close enough to the cowering group of orcs. 13 orcs met their electrified end at the hands of a warlock, a bard, a cleric, and a paladin with nothing more than two spell slots, a breath weapon, and good use of noisy armor

  • @Froggie1337
    @Froggie1337 4 года назад +2

    I had a question about using minor illusion and illusory reality, so here's the picture, you see a spell caster of some sort, you cast minor illusion as your action to create let's say plate armor on your enemy then use your your bonus action with illusory reality to make it real, the idea is most spell casters lack the proficiency with heavy armors, so with that they would get the disadvantages of wearing plate armor, disadvantage on ability checks, saving throws, attack rolls that involve str and dex, oh yeah and can't cast spells. Would this work in D&D 5E AL?

      a little bland, but it gets the job done ;)

    • @funyarinpa336
      @funyarinpa336 6 лет назад +5

      That would still be your illusory cube directly harming the person underneath. It doesn't say the object shouldn't harm someone right as it materializes (e.g. impaling an enemy with an illusory spear, then making the spear real as it's in their body) but that it can not directly harm someone else. period. this would rule out any and all "I create object x above them and drop it." idea since contact with the illusory object is what you're intending them to get hurt by.
      Or in simpler terms (and obviously a very lenient DM could rule otherwise): If you make an illusory bow real and use it to shoot a real arrow, then the arrow can hurt someone since it's a real object being acceletared by an illusion. If you instead have a real bow and use it to fire an illusory arrow at someone, then the arrow will disappear or simply pass through, when it touches the enemy since it can not hurt directly.
      Thus the examples Drow Bard used are actually pretty good to take as inspiration. Cover someone in illusory oil and burn that oil? Your oil is not hurting people, it's merely transporting the fire which is hurting people. Cage a flying creature? The cage is not hurting the creature directly, but simply keeping it from flying. It's that lack of flight that causes the fall and the damage.

    • @cdgonepotatoes4219
      @cdgonepotatoes4219 6 лет назад

      that could cause some really freaky reactions and even kill some enemies out of shock alone, but it can only be a distraction as the object isn't actually material. I find a really good way to see how illusions work by taking the episode in Hellsing Ultimate where a vampire is able to convince that they just chopped a castle in half alon with some guy's arm, their brain is firing off in terror, but as soon as they snap out of it they're able to get back on their feet and keep on unscathed if not for the mental trauma.
      Seeing illusions as, well, illusions, can also help solve the bridge issue where you create the illusion of a bridge, have someone levitate you to convince the enemy the bridge is real and then have the first dozen of pursuers fall to their deaths as they "phase trough the floor", when the back rows notice the error and figure out that the bridge is fake their numbers have been slightly reduced and they'll take a while to find out another pursue route, specially as they're now wary of other possible traps, making them slow down significantly.

    • @yaroaram7237
      @yaroaram7237 5 лет назад

      Yea but even if the cube cant hurt you the ground under your feet will definitely do that when you are pushed into it.
      So if you drop a "real illusion" that's very heavy onto somebody they will still take indirect damage or simply suffocate under its weight.

    • @kevinbarber2795

The idea I had was to make an illusory door in a wall and make it real. but the wall is still there just as the floor is still there if you made a pit. It's 100% a GM call, w.o.t.c has been really nebulous this time around and a lot of their rules don't make sense. I don't think you can take away something real. Whats even worse is if it did work then you could dismiss the spell potentially trapping the creatures beneath the earth.

    "all the enemies think a bunch of sticks is their weapons"
    "the golem attempts to walk the non-existing stone bridge only to fall in the lava"
    "you convince the demon king to become your personal pet, barking and cuddling"
    Anyway, I usually go with a realistic way of casting illusions so you can give people only images in their head that they already had, for example you can create a trap in a room an enemy already explored and cloak the trap by giving the guy a mental illusion of how the room was beforehand, the tricky part of illusion, only master illusionists can successfully insert images of an unknown place or object to a person as that opens the path to godlike illusions that can terrorize even the greatest of opponent provided they don't have a strong mind or they're so dumb their brains can't create fake mental images as all they can process is what they see and they have no imagination, this allows you to deter predators like mammals but you can't do the same on insects.
    (also, the illusionist needs to study a certain creature for long enough in order to successfully cast illusions on them, with this you can end up with quite the stories from a ranger illusionist that's able to also act as really good beast tamer, a charming street performer that knows very well how to create illusions on people or a scholar in illusions that only read about certain beasts months ago and finds out only in the heat of battle that some of the information in the books was incorrect)

    • @fhuber7507
      @fhuber7507 5 лет назад

      You have the issue of lip syncing the silent image with the sound.
      You can't do it perfectly, trying t control 2 spells at once, so you gave the observers a + to detect the discrepancy.

    I feel like Illusion kinda falls apart when you actually pay attention to the limitations of the actual spells (something every group I've ever seen ever has been horrible at, lol).
    For example, the Minor Illusion cantrip upgrade is great, but you can still only affect a single 5ft cube, it only lasts a minute (sometimes enough, sometimes nowhere near enough), and most importantly, you can only have one in effect at a time (this is the real killer).
    Suddenly, the possibilities are heavily reigned in, mostly because you can only have one active at a time.

      The bonus of doing sound and image at the same time does help with the 5ft cube bit, at least. Because nowhere does it say that your sound has that 5 ft cube limit - it can originate from anywhere else.
      Set up a boulder to hide in while sounds of you running come from the opposite direction - lots of flexibility here

  • @xthebumpx

    I don't think dispelling an illusion while it's in its real state is the intended rule. You make the object actually real, not just seem real. A real physical object can't be dispelled or dismissed. Treating real objects as if they still have the properties of an illusion might make the ability less OP though since the objects could be dispelled or disintegrated.
    edit: apparently there was a sage advice that ruled the real objects cannot be dispelled.

    Wait, if you could make a car real (theoretically), does that mean you make sayy, I don't know, a Elephant Construct/ Robot real? It's inanimate and if something with the strength of a mechanical elephant used it's strength to say lift a log of lumber and drop it on someone, or maybe used a large weapon and swing it? *It's* not doing the damage the Log/Big weapon is, not to mention the thing it's holding is real and a DM can turn around and say that just because the Illusion is holding that the real, substantial object just loses it'a normal properties. (If I made an illusion of a toaster real and stuck a knife in there and tried to spring it, you couldn't say it does no damage because the toaster wasn't real.)

    • @DrowBard
      @DrowBard  6 лет назад +1

      The specifics of the ability state the illusion made real does no damage, but as with our catapult example damage is still possible.

    • @lizzy532
      @lizzy532 6 лет назад

      I know, I'm just giving more examples like the catapult. Just cause no damage is applied doesn't mean that physics isn't. So if an illusion with a force of a mega ton elephant smacks you with a real palm tree, that shit is going to hurt. I have never played an illusionist before, but I've always wanted to and this video was cool.

    • @onemisterfranko
      @onemisterfranko 6 лет назад

      How do wizards play now, I started in 5th and so far none of us have done that class. I've run a barbarian, fighter and cleric so far. But most classes seem to be able to do something, although casters do seem to struggle at low levels from what I've seen so far mainly because they run out of slots and components make them have issues.

    • @DrowBard
      @DrowBard  6 лет назад +1

      Components are not the issue the used to be. in many cases you are assumed to have them as long as you have you s.c.p, and as long as it has no monetary value in the description. also in this edition a component is only consumed if it specifically says so in the description.
      Don't worry to much about components, it's more for flavour in most cases. you don't need to be pedantic about components so just assume you have them.
      A wizard is a utility king. concentrate your spell slots on utility spells and if you do need to do any attacking then that's what cantrips are for.
      Wizards have an answer for almost anything. I never have as much fun as when i'm playing a wizard.

    • @onemisterfranko
      @onemisterfranko 6 лет назад

      Cool I will bring the components thing up to my DM, I assume by monetary value you are referring to something like say a Diamond or actual gold pieces or a focuser that is work some fairly large sum even for say a 9th level spell?
      You make a wizard sound like a rouge, or at least how I like to look at them, proficiency with many skills lots of options, a person who can do a lot of interparty stuff fighting is almost secondary.
      We have a Teifling Sorcerer and a lot of his spells are things like thumagaly minor illusion and thunderstep from xanithars guide to everything. A fair number of them are for avoiding trouble but he still has chaos bolt also from xnathars guide to everything, and lighting bolt and fireball for a bit of punch beside his cantrips. Though I think a sorcerer is a bit more focused?

    • @DrowBard
      @DrowBard  6 лет назад

      You only really need to provide a component when there is a cost in the description. e.g. 500gp worth of diamond dust or 5000gp jade statue, that kind of thing.
      Sorcerers are really mobile artillery platforms. they specialise in damage. Wizards are problem solvers. Wizards have a much more varied spell list than sorcerers and their special abilities are better suited to utility.

      "you can choose one inanimate, nonmagical object that is part of the illusion and make that object real" I don't think that's really part of how the spell is intended to work. When they step into the hole, the ground is still there, so they would realize the hole is fake.
