- I've always wanted to try out Beavercrafts Comfort Bird Wood Carving Kit and decided to whittle one myself! It was a fun, but challenging project.
If you get this kit, I suggest starting with the basswood block, the cherry was a little harder to cut than I thought it would be!

If you are looking for the kit for yourself, I need to let you know that Beavercraft is currently unable to fulfil orders at this moment since they are based out of Ukraine. Please send well wishes to the Beavercraft team as well as the citizens of Ukraine as they go through this upsetting situation.
Amazon does have some stock left so if anyone wants any beavercraft products they can get them there before they run out.
@@TheLittlehopeful are they able to send out the stock that's left though?
Amazon will be the only sorce at the moment.
@@antix527 Yes! My comfort Bird kit is coming in today! I may or may not have impulse bought the chip carving set that came in yesterday....
@@TheLittlehopeful that's awesome! Enjoy your kit haha
I'm not 100% sure what a comfort bird is but I look at that lil guy and my immediate thought is that it's perfectly hand shaped. It's meant to be held!
@JackalopeJunkie 😂
I just played the video because I was like .. "what on earth is a comfort bird?"
@@TheAllMightyGodofCod A comfortable bird! Like, literally I guess haha. I looked it up and they named it that because it fits comfy in the hand
i think it could have to do with the smoothness of the wood in the end, i remember there being some kind of thing close to "comfort rocks" where their smooth surface felt good in your hands and eased anxiety, maybe this is the case here too
what about a dog version of comfort bird for people who like dogs? is there such a thing as comfort dog lol
Forgot to mention in the video, but fun fact about me! I fractured the bone in my hand that connects to my pinky finger when I was a kid, and it hurts when I carve for too long. So I'm a bit limited in what I can do with my carvings at times and have to literally "cut corners" and just let the carvings be the way they are.
Also, thank you for everyone who has educated me on the saw! I love how much y'all teach me :)
Awww...You do a great job despite being "limited"
**pat pat** **pat pat**
Nothing wrong with cutting corners, why do it the hard way when you can do it the smart way :) Glad to see even experts face a brick to carve sometimes lol So its not all me!
Here we call the this type of saw a "Japanese saw". It has two sides with different teeth.
Don't worry; it's not wrong to cut corners ;)
I also have health/hands issues (but related to a genetic disorder), so it's good to know what kind of wood to avoid in these cases.
I now know that, when I start, I will have to look for basswood. Thank you for the tips (and commitment) =)
In one of your videos, I believe you talked about wetting the work to make it softer (correct me if I'm wrong). Would it have worked with this one, or is it too dense?
Yes it would have worked... if I had remembered ro do it!! I rarely soften my wood so it slips my mind on these occasions.
OUCH! 😅
Good on Beavercraft for including band-aids in their beginner kit lol
It's like they know what is gonna happen....
Yeap, that's exactly what happened to me with this exact set today 😢, they should include boundages as well
@@alebado8664A styptic pencil and some superglue is what I keep in my little IFAK for woodcarving. 🤣
this was my first kit! it looks like you grabbed the cherry wood block first, it comes with a block of bass and a cherry, and i noticed the cherry was really dense. i just finished my second bird today :)
Ha, didn't realize there were two different blocks of wood in it! Was wondering why it was so hard :) I'll have to update the title to reflect that.
@@CarvingisFun Hi, I'm a new subscriber and I really like making wooden dolls. I'm from Mexico.
If it's not too much to ask can you link me to what I'd need to keep the knives properly sharp as I'm looking into placing an order for everything I'd need and am uncertain as a new comer
@@nedarbthegod Carving is Fun has a great video about sharpening and honing your knives, that's where I learned how to keep mine nice and sharp! ruclips.net/video/FF6SiW-QjMY/видео.html
Also if it helps, I use a cheap 1000 grit stone off of Amazon and Beavercraft's paddle strop for honing. It comes with compound too and is easier to hold for me.
Toxic no. Let it air out outside, yes.
I think they put something in it to help dry faster is all.
Seeing you have a bit more trouble with the wood makes me feel a lot better about how mine has been going these past two weeks. I was worried the knife they sent just wasn't sharpened properly or something (stopped thinking that as soon as I accidentally sliced myself, though). Can't wait to see mine come together like that!
that bird looks like it would be really comforting to hold, the urge to order this kit is growing very powerful in my soul
I've been wood carving on an off over the years making spoons and rough looking cups, my wife and i had out first baby 7months ago and she wanted wooden toys for him. I found your channel and recently started up again, I bout myself a cheap whittling knife from amazon and have carved him the owl, the dog and the horse head chess piece, next the bunny.. all following your tutorials. I've really surprised myself cos they turned out brilliantly. Manly thanks to your great step by step instructions. I just wanted to say thank you. Looking forward to future videos. All the best from the UK.
Is there a way to use a homemade knife or just a normal knife for carving? I cant really buy the kits n stuff
@@quandaledingle7092 I wouldn't recommend it. For safety reasons.
It depends on what type of knife you have access to.
Woodcarving knives tend to be made from harder steel, so it can keep an edge better.
A couple things things that the knife needs:
Good handle/grip for comfort and control
Tough blade, it must not bend easily
Hard enough steel that is can hold an edge well (comfort, control) but not too hard so that the blade is brittle.
Short blade (long blade usually means less control, long blade blocks view, more risk when you lose control).
What is good enough depends on your goals (rough end result requires less).
Softer wood is easier to cut and arguably safer. But it is harder to get a nice smooth result with soft woods.
If you want to try anyway. Lovely carvings have been made with a decent pocket knife.
But use common sense, be careful.
@@quandaledingle7092probably a Swiss Army knife, for a smaller blade. You probably need a sharpening kit + cut resistant gloves and finger tape to protect your hand. Maybe even a first aid kit for good measure lol
"We're not machines or anything like that" hit hard for me and I was not expecting that emotional reaction from myself??? Love the bird
Sometimes we all just hear something at the right time and it hits us hard. We may have even heard it before but something makes it sink in deeper than expected and is worth investigating why one ends up feeling the way they do.
THE FACT THEY HAVE BANDAIDS PREPARED FOR YOU IS SO WHOLESOME FOR SOME REASON
i love that it's called a "comfort bird"
i mean it looks very friend shaped so im sure holding it would bring a feeling of comfort
Literally, it’s the most adorable thing ever 🥺
What a dumb looking pfp
Wow! I had no idea of the origin of this bird.
My wife's mother was given one of these when she was in her last days. When it was handed to her, I didn't think it was going to "work." It literally took seconds when she was feeling overwhelmed. My wife still has it.
Thanks for sharing.
LOL I love how the kit comes with complimentary bandaids.
props for the hand stretching reminders! any crafter or artist MUST take care of their hands
Great class for us beginners
Thanks Bryan
you know its a good kit when it comes with bandaids
In school we had woodcrafting, among the topics also wood carving. I never really liked it because our teacher wasn't that good or nice, but now I want to pick it up again and carve a little bird. Thanks :)
wow what a good school i am a highschool student and the music theachers were making us sing elementary school musics without theaching anything i learned everything from RUclips even the talking English and mats
@@godabandonedmesoibecameaba8984 I mean Im also still in highschool and there really are some shitty classes (our music teacher is the worst- we went from singing children's songs to imo really complicated theory without even learning the basics). However, my school is very arts orientated and we have lots of special topics such as sewing, drama, gardening and stuff from a young age. Im really grateful cause we learned many actually useful things we can integrate in our daily lives, at least the basics (except of music haha)
@@godabandonedmesoibecameaba8984 cool tho that you're interested in teaching yourself! idk if I could handle that, especially maths, my respect :) I hope your teachers are good enough to appreciate your work and grade it decently
@@schminne9540 i also think that you are cool because you are learning arts by random boring classes but you still love them i guess i would leave if art was something i can see in exam papers
My boyfriend is doing a lot of woodwork lately, I can't believe that me wanting to understand woodwork terms ended up with me watching a bunch of your videos
Sounds like you are being a good partner :)
I love Bird carving, I did a woodpecker on Christmas for my dad, and when I painted it, I was absolutely fascinated of the amazing colours they have!
I stretched my hand too when he reminded us lol. As a digital artist, I tend to forget to stretch, so that was an actual reminder for me😂
Stretch and rest to let the tendons get their fluid back
I just found you bud and i have a lot of respect and gratitude for what are you doing and the way you think. It really was a blast from the past to hear the line "carving is about unique not perfection" these were my words of my carving teacher when i was a small lad. Also, the strugle with the hard wood maaan:))) he used to punish us with this kind of wood. Keep up the good work!🤗🤗🦅
Ha! I actually find it hilarious that a carving teacher punishes their students by making them carve harder woods :)
This was my first set I ever carved a week ago - good to see you did struggle as well with the density, thought it was just me :-) Looking at the color of your bird, I was a bit shy on the wax it seems, will give it another layer. Keep up the great videos, they got me into the carving thing 🙂
Yep, Im gonna add a layer of the wax I like to use on my stuff, kinda like it a bit better.
I’ve been considering getting this kit for a while, and after this video I think I’m going to go through with it! So cute!
The company is based in Ukraine and they're no longer taking or shipping orders due to the war. I hope they'll be all right...these are crazy times.
I hope everything over there settles soon and any harm done is kept to a minimum. It is a very unfortunate situation.
Love the bird carving! Also, thanks for the reminder to stop and stretch. Given this is all new to me, I get a bit carried away with my excitement and forget to stop and rest my hands :)
I love how the result looks so nice and smooth that it's hard to believe it was cut out of a rough square piece of wood even if you've seen the entire process from the beginning to the end. Amazing work, the artist's skill is like real life magic.
Hi Brian. Nice little kit. Cherry is tough wood to carve with a knife - I've done some small birds in cherry, but the one you did was definitely some hand exercise! Great video!!! 👍✌
Thanks!! My hand is still a lil sore, but nuch has been gained!
I never did wood carving before, Im an artist but I work with canvas, paint and pencils. I always had hard time with hand craft (carving, clay statues, all 3d art) but your videos really inspired me! I will definetly try it soon! It looks very enjoyable ^^
😆 Makes my carpal tunnel ache just watching. I'll just watch you carve, and stick to painting.
The saw is a Ryoba and they're super handy for someone who doesn't want too many different tools due to the different teeth per inch on each side. A good but affordable brand for those is Gyokucho. :)
I use poplar for my carving. It's slightly harder than basswood but wildly more accessible where I live. It carves nicely and paints well! Beavercraft and Ramelson are my go to tools! I mostly carve hummingbirds
Poplar is a great choice!! Great alternative option to basswood
Poplar is a great whittling wood. It's sometimes called Tulipwood too, used a lot in instrument making. 👍
Wonderful video. Not a woodcarver myself but my grandfathers are. Stumbled upon this video on accident, but loved it. Incredible to see people sharing their passions with others!
my dad used to whittle cute birds and paint them, and they were super adorable.
Well, I got what I wanted from my recommendations, lmao. Props to the creator for no clickbait whatsoever.
Looks like a new hobby I can enjoy
Oh my God it's so Small and Friend Shaped I love it
I have a quick question as a wannabe-whittler: Have you ever designed/whittled you're own knife handle? Is it feasible? Is it even remotely do-able?
Yep it is! There are many who reshape or make their own handles around the blades they like.
=////======> Sure, just carve away that what doesn't look like the handle You want.? Har,! 😀
very doable, just make sure you have good strong glue to keep the blade in place afterwards :)
I never knew how much I wanted to carve a comfort bird before today 😅
Damn, the effect of the Bee's Wax is astonishing.
The YT algorithm lead me here and let me say, I was not disappointed. Truly the de-stressor I was looking for
Man ! Very very nice woodden SEA LION !
The RUclips algorithm has blessed me with this video. Hope some other fortunate soul gets to see this relaxing video.
This video randomly popped up in my recommendations, very nice! It's so calming, I like that you don't have any music. Just chilling
There's something wholesome and funny yet ominously foreshadowing about them packaging in band aids lol
*quickly adds it to my wishlist*
It's a fun lil project!
I dont even do wood carving. RUclips just decided to recommend this to me so here I am watching. Looks like lots of fun
this was a great video to wind down from a panic attack, thank you 😊
I'm so happy others are finding these videos calming. Honestly, never imagined these videos would have this effect on othets but am happy it does :)
2:10 I have one of those as well! I believe thats called a ryoba saw, from Japan. It makes extremely clean cuts and I love it.
I know nothing about carving but this whole video is absolutely amazing and makes me feel so happy for some reason:3
AW THIS IS JUST ADORABLE
This was really wholesome not gonna lie
Looks like a seal or walrus. I dig it. Nice work.
Just found the Bob Ross of wood carving, so far, having a good day
I need to make one of these ASAP! They look so cute, and it would be a fun little project! When i do make it, im probably gonna carry it around everywhere lol.
I’ve recently started to want to get into whittling. I’ve tried many hobbies over my life, but never in this creative way, I’m excited. Good walk through videos.
I bought this kit after watching one of your video where you said you are gonna give it a try!
Glad to hear that the wood is really hard cause I'm having such hard time whittling it and I just thought I was really horrible at it.
Thank you for saying you don't have to be perfect with the cuts. It really helped!
Thank you for your contents! It's fun to have a new hobby though I'm really bad at it.
There are 2 blocks in the kit, cherry and basswood. The basswood is lighter in color and much easier to carve than the cherry.
I felt so relieved when you decided to "cheat" and got a saw.
The fact that they give you bandaids 👏
Idk how I got here but this is satisfying. Also the bandaids made me laugh 😂
I’m working on this exact kit right now and man, is it painful. I can only work on it an hour at most and it’s been about 2 days. I can’t saw off the pieces like you did but it’s taking so long. I’m excited to finish this bird and then move onto your beginner ideas! I might also need to find a better wood that’s easier to cut too haha. Thanks for this video!
Give your hands a rest every 20 minutes to let the tendons recover themselves. You can damage them if you don't keep them lubricated inside the tendon sheaths
@@dshe8637 this is true.
@@dshe8637any idea for how long?
@@sammy_sand_utubeyt6901 I try and give it 5 minutes if the room is warm.
I really enjoyed watching you carve out the seemingly harder than basswood block and you had me laughing at "It looks like a Manatee!" - I have a very small block of pine I drew the pattern on to and thought to myself: "That looks like a Manatee." then you said it! LOL! Funny! Thanks for the fun video, :)
I just found this channel and wow I'm hooked! I love how soft spoken and gentle you are about your explanations. Makes me want to pick up carving myself besides just watching videos about it lol!
its 2am i have a bio test at 7:30 am... i havent studied. ive never carved anything before. i have no idea what im doing here but i very much enjoyed watching funny bird come into existence
It reminds me of a canary. Long time ago my grandfather used to raise canaries
I did a lot of carving when I was a kid. I need to do that again I'm the summer. I'll just take a knife and a random peace of wood and start. It's really soothing to do.
I'm not sure why this was recommended to me...but i'm not complaining. I enjoy him making the Comfort Bird
I just got this kit ^-^
Imma start my carving journey 😌
This is great video, makes me wanna start doing this! To be honest around 2:03 when you talked about cheating and quickly transitioned to the next part I just barked out in laughter.
RUclips reccomened me your Beginners Guide to Whittling and I've been hooked since, may get this kit myself when I next have the cash to spare! I love the cute little bird (also appreciate the comments on making it your own little bird and not how the box is as I know my perfectionist self wouldn't even take time to process that it being my own unique bird is just as good as being like the box art :))
I have to tell myself this quite often. Just remember it's your carving, not someone eles :)
@@CarvingisFun It's a good philosophy to have
This was super relaxing to watch tbh. I tend to overthink and watching this helped calm my thoughts.
The idea of it coming with bandaid is hilarious to me😂
Thats the most comforting manatee I've ever seen
I know!! Jyst wish I put some flippers on it now :)
Thanks for another great video! Watching you helped me decide to give carving a try. I still suck, but it is fun learning.
I actually just received this kit a week or so ago and am looking forward to getting the time to try it out.
Don't make the mistake I did an pick up the cherry wood first! Grab the basswood (lighter colored wood) first.
This is cool to see you do. It was my first one also. I am glad that I wasn't the only one that was having trouble with the wood.
Cute birb
I gotta start getting into wood carving. Mum bought me some chisels a few Christmases ago which are intimidating as hell to sharpen. I definitely messed up the edge of one of them even after all the pre-reading and videos. Also the main problem is not having a workbench and clamp because it's the kind that needs a hammer, rather than just knives.
Such a cute seal 🦭
I just bought this kit around 2 days ago. Gonna be my first witheling project!
Nice! I do highly recommend cutting away the larger sections with a saw or something like that. It will save you lots of time.
Best hobby ever! Keep on doing it, I also recommend Doug Linker, he absolutely hooked me in to carving, he has a lot of lovely beginner Carvings too.
This honestly looks fun.
I like knifes and I like making/doing art. So this might be something I will be looking into.
I've never carved anything before but this was recommended to me by RUclips and it was really comforting to watch lol. Nice video!
Your bird is very friend shaped! I love him!
I've never watched this channel or whittling videos at all, but i thought this was super entertaining and interesting! New sub
I just finished the seal this video inspired me to whittle by simply leaving flippers and a head on the bird shape.
Turned our very comfy. It's now my comfort seal :D
Thank you for your videos, they allways keep me whittling. Keep up the good work.
Yay!! More comfort seals!!
This bird is indeed very comforting
what?? I had no idea they made kits for this...or that this could be a hobby of mine. this is so cooooollll!
very cool cute comfort birdie :D
I picked up the cherry block first as well and was surprised at how dense it was
Going to gift to someone when it's all said and done, thanks for the video!
I received my kit today 1 day after ordering it
Everything was in order
My Japanese Ruitool saw arrived today too
When i get my next paycheck i will try it. I want to hold it. 🙌
i hope this doesn’t come off as weird but i’m in love with your voice
I know nothing about wood carving, I just clicked cause the bird looked super cute haha but I loved this!! So relaxing, your voice is very nice! Thank you for the cute little birdie carving video ☺️
The fact that the beak is less defined makes it a little cuter then the picture on the book lol
Awesome video, definitely going to binge your content later. I like how you are very positive with the carving process and accept imperfections!
The inc plaster or bandaid made me smile
The kit includes, Bandaid, tourniquet, blood plasma, needle and thread and priority hospital treatment lol
These are some wonderful videos you’re putting out, making woodcrafting more accessible. Kudos!
Hey!! This right here is a genuine hallelujah! It’s so good to see that you still are doing videos!!😁
I saw the comment saying you had the cherry by mistake so watching you perplexed at how hard the wood was at the beginning made me chuckle ruefully on your behalf.
Loved the bird and I prefer the beak you did to the one on the box.
Also, thank you for helping to calm my anxious mind. I’m very grateful :)
I knew it wasn't like the basswood I normally use but now that I knoe its cherry it completely makes sense!
@@CarvingisFun I really felt for you, but, it was interesting to see how different the woods are, I’m new to all this so I didn’t really know if you were just super strong or the wood was really soft.
Turns out it’s both?! Lol
This guy is like the wood carving Bob Ross
i have never carved b4 but this is cute i luv this :3
Thanks for your videos- you’re great! Re the saw sides: cross-cut fine teeth, rip-cut coarse teeth.
Am I the only one here that just watched this for the satisfaction?
