Yeah, cows are the biggest danger you'll face on walks. But you did all right, keep fairly calm, didn't run (brisk walk is good) and a quick loud yell from time to time when they get closer than you're comfy with. The main danger is how you react to them. Panic and run and that's really when things go bad. They were just curious, it's just the type of curiosity you might have with spiders. Maybe you'll shoo them out, maybe smash em flat when they run and scare you. Only you're the spider to them, avoid having em smash you.

Well we certainly have raised the ire of the RUclips know-it-alls with this video.
We've been accused of being 'city dwellers' and 'townies' in a pejorative way as if that is a crime. These are the facts.
    1) According to the Farmers Weekly website, cows have killed an average of 4 people per year since 2000. We don't want to be included in those statistics.
    2) We were walking on a designated public footpath as is our entitled right.
    3) The cows were not visible until we were halfway across the field.
    4) Neither of us have lived in a city for 30 years, but we do love walking in the country.
    5) The official advice regarding dogs when being threatened by cows is to let them off their lead. Hopefully this would mean they wouldn't be shot as has been suggested.
    6) I (Fran) am scared of 50 cows running at me showing the whites of their eyes, I can't help that. I am not however scared of spiders!!
Thanks for watching and please keep it respectful.

I realise this is getting to be a sore spot now. But as a professional dog trainer and former sheepdog trainer that has some experience with cows as well. My opinion is that if you let your dogs off lead when you are being attacked it helps. In the immediate situation. Dogs being faster than you. In this situation they are much better at saving themselves than you would be. They would get shot here in the US if they were chasing livestock. Running wieght off the animal. Weight = money. But not sure how that would go over in the UK. And since I don't know your dogs. I'm not sure what they would do. My professional guess... They would run. They would perceive your fear and act in kind. But who knows.
Example would be my doberman would run from the cows. My border collie would take thier nose (bite it hard). Then gather them to me. Who gets shot in that scenario?
Sorry wasn't trying to pile on. Didn't realise so many people commented like I did. I don't think people expect you to know. Its more like helpful future advice from people that do. Don't know what you did for a living but watch me use power tools. You will get a couple of laughs. And hopefully I will keep my fingers!

Very enjoyable while I'm stuck in lock down, being older (65 not too old) but with a bad heart, here in California. Fran and Rich, Barbara and I love your vlogs. Barbara grew up in the city and I grew up on a farm (with cows). Neither of us would suggest a “gung ho” approach to dealing with cows. Having a respect or fear for something in no way should be belittled by others as we all have things that make us uneasy. Some only arrive when we are older. So, that being said we encourage you to continue the enjoyment of walking, foraging and sharing the joy via you vlogs. Two committed supporters.

Hi Fran and Rich. Tiller handle Dave here. Wow, that Load of "Bullocks" looked a bit scary. Those Bullocks/Cows were young Heffers( Young female cows).Probable age about 6 months. So just like kids they wanted some fun. Then you came along and made their day. And they would not have harmed you. But you wouldn't be expected to know that eh.
Sorry to say your reactions to them, made the situation worse. They meant you no harm. It was your dogs that they were intrigued about. The obvious reaction would be to shout. It is illegal for a Farmer to put a dangerous beast,(Farmer speak). In a field that a footpath goes through. I'm from a livestock farming background of over forty years. So trust me on that one. Anyway. A very entertaining vlog. Keep me updated on that Tiller handle.
    Love Dave and Diane x

Hi Dave. A few months ago in Yorkshire an elderly gentleman walking across a field in Yorkshire with his brother was surrounded by cows who then knocked him to the ground and tramp!ed him to death. This happens to an average of walkers each year in the UK alone. I will never assume the cows just want a riendly pat on the nose. We have also been told by other people who think they know about cattle that we should shout at them or wave sticks at them. Everyone seems to know best.

John Sharman is right I do believe. I grew up on a farm and had many cows run towards me. They run towards humans because they think there may be some food spread on the ground. That excites them--that is why they kick and run. There can be a few rogues who are aggressive. It is always good to be cautious when you are around cows who are not familiar with you. We love your series. Send a few more on that fabulous new boat!!!

In my view rich and Fran , I would just ignore the minority , you put out interesting and fun vlogs , you’ll always get pond life in what ever you do , don’t let them win , you have worked hard and produced a good subs base , patrons and merchandise , 2 fingers to um
Good luck in what ever you decide 👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧

Great vlog as usual, I got cornered by a about 40 cows whilst camping on on a farm in Wiltshire, quite scary at the time , i was later insured they are normally just inquisitive!!!!

I thought of you two when I saw the news report about the chap in Yorkshire then started listening to your blog this afternoon, was shocked although I shouldn't be I guess at the hateful comments on here. I defy anyone not to be shaken when a herd of cattle come polling over curious or not. I have several friends who are farmers and they all have an assortment of cattle... With character shall we say... I'd not want to be in a field with any of them. I'm sorry you have had such bad feedback, I enjoy both your vlog and now your podcast is an added bonus. And anyone with a stock of Elder Rob has to be alright in my book 🙂🙂. 🤗🤗To you both, looking forward to your next vlog x

OMG I was so scared for you. We were chased by a loan bull once ..a farmer had deliberately put him in a field to stop walkers. 😞 It's a terrifying experience. Thank goodness you survived.

When I read the title of your vlog I thought "This can't be good" knowing your fear Fran. That would have been scary. We walked through a pasture like this with lots of cows. They were very curious and caught up with us just as we got to a stile. Think they were expecting food as one pushed her nose into my jacket pocket to see what was on offer. All the comments I read were about the cows but what about the shooting!! Then I can attest to the danger of low flying golf balls, being a golfer myself. Never stand in front of me. Loved the foraged goodies. Best vlog ever!

Scarey , fun and informative vlog. Love yoos two and your vlogs don't let the crap out there get you down. If you like a nice tipple and there are enough Damsons out there try making Damson Wine it's gorgeous. We had a glut of them many years ago so I made several gallons of wine which I enjoyed for years after *hic*

Many years ago when I had my first rescue dog I had a similar experience with a herd of cows so I let him off the lead and he did no more than round them up, I was super impressed and got the feeling he had done it before. Thanks for a great vlog in Dan Brown countryside it looks such a lovely place. Cheers guys take care. Alan x
