  • Headphones are required to appreciate the approaching sound of 40013 as it hammers away from Crewe and drowns out the dawn chorus at Chorlton.

    It would lessen the load a bit if they had a generator van so they didn't need to hang a 47 on the back; though I suppose it may be needed for shunting at Kingswear

      Personally don't mind the 47 on the back , more dead weight meaning the 40 has to work that little bit harder .

      Reminds me of when I used to photograph 50’s on the Berks & Hants in the early ‘80’s; you’d hear them approaching a good 3 minutes before they arrived!
