    Peter Jackson took a lot of liberties with Tolkien's story, but the scene where the Fellowship passes through the Argonath is extremely moving and goes a long way to illustrating the power that was Gondor and only hints at the immesurable power of Numenor that preceeded it.

    • @saberhamlinconmaverickknud4821
      @saberhamlinconmaverickknud4821 3 года назад +1

      That is not true. I loved that Howard Shore's Female Choir sang at first, but yet again, he then plays the Ring's Theme, (Chance Thomas's Argonath Theme is a lot more gorgeous because it is Anglo-Saxon). The CGI in this scene is also bad because Jackson and the filmmakers tried too hard to be the best adaptation. One of the most important scenes in the book, and in the entire trilogy, is when the four Hobbits are afraid of the Argonath, and they see Aragorn as one of the Kings of Old.

    • @USN1985dos
      @USN1985dos 3 года назад

      @@saberhamlinconmaverickknud4821 Nah, it was definitely a great scene done well. The hobbits being afraid of a large statue would have been irrational in the movie. A lot of times the emotions and thoughts that Tolkien put into the characters wouldn't seem realistic to modern audiences, so it was better for Jackson to have them inspire awe rather than fear.

      Agreed. Imagine the hollowness of the movie without the ruins and massive statues and towers, but instead, close ups and paintings, like its the 1950s trying to do it on a shoestring budget...

    Despite any changes that PJ had to make for the movies, they still blew me away with so many scenes appearing just how I'd imagined them when first reading the books as a teenager in the late 70's.
    I'm sure a lot was also due to Tolkien's descriptive power, but the Argonath scene was just perfect, and the realism even exceeded my imagination.

    Ancient alien theorists contend that the Argonath would've been impossible to build by their much more primitive ancestors. Is it possible they had some (possibly otherworldly) assistance??

    • @mevb
      @mevb 3 года назад +40

      The Numénoreans had knowledge and possibly "technology" that was lost over time as Numénor have been destoryed and the Kingdom of Gondor declined, similiar to how the dwarves of Erebor once did the best type of armours but once Smaug occupied The Lonely Mountain and the dwarves fled, they lost the old knowledge on how to make such armour as these weren't been documented or all documents most likely were destoryed when the dragon attacked. Gloín tells in The Council of Elrond that when dwarves resettled Erebor after The Battle of Five Armies, their mining and craftmanship of making jewellery were at its high peak, they couldn't make armors as great as before Smaug's attack, as the knowledge and probably the means of making them were lost, so the same must be said about the Numénoreans ability to build statues too.
      Also, this reflects on the mystery of how the ancient egyptians built the pyramids. Maybe Tolkien got the inspiration of The Argonath came from the ancient pyramids of Egypt, as they were both were wonders of their own worlds.

    Boromir attacked Frodo only hours after passing trough the Argonath. Maybe traveling trough the monuments together with the true heir of Gondor, took the last faith out of him, now realizing that Gondor may not survive, and if it should prevail, the man on his left will be the new ruler of the kingdom and not himself.

      @@ppvk2610 it always made sense to me. Passing trough the monument guarding your kingdom while cowering, while at the same time aragorn, reacting in a polar oposite way. "gondor need No king", are you still sure about that boromir? And it is not a shot at boromir eighter, any situation like this in close proximity of the ring would probably twist a persons mind. Him instingtively trying to steal the ring as a last resort to save his kingdom makes sense in this context.

    In the movie the statues were changed from Anarion to Elendil. While this is a speculation, it is very likely that since Elendil was an important character, being the leader of Arnor and Gondorean army of The Last Alliance and the fact that Anarion was slain early in the battle and wasn't present at the final stage when Sauron came to fight off, killed Elendil and almost killed Isildur (Gil-Galad's death was to be shown according to early storyboards but cut for time and pacing, it's not known werever it was filmed or not, a lot of stuff were filmed that wasn't even in the Extended Edition, so until official statements from Peter Jackson or New Line comes out, who knows) and therefore almost defeated the Last Alliance, that's why he wasn't shown.
    Anarion is mentioned in The Return of the King in the dialouge by Denethor "I am the servant of the house of Anarion. Thus I have walked... thus now I will asleep." so he could still been in battle, just not shown. Same about Thorin's brother Frerin who wasn't seen in The Hobbit: An Unexcepted Journey (or even mentioned), he also died at The Battle of Azanulbizar in the book, similiar to Anarion, but still could be canon in the movies even if hasn't seen (like with Dol-Amroth as his flag is shown in the crowd in The Battle of Morannon, even if wasn't featured).

    • @terrywest111

      Is it possible that there was some Dwarven contribution to these monuments?

    • @MountainFisher
      @MountainFisher 3 года назад +2

      @@terrywest111 Doubtful as the Numenoreans, people of Gondor were from Numenor, were superb builders even surpassing Dwarven accomplishments. The Tower of Orthanc at Isengard was indestructible by any known means and same for the walls of Minas Tirith.
      Have you read the books or just watched the movies? The movies never mentioned what I just told you. It is possible the Argonath monuments were made from the same material as they barely showed any deterioration.

    Since Halloween is right around the corner, how about we talk about one of the darkest places in all of Arda? What if Utumno was rebuilt and became Morgoths stronghold again for the 1st age? How would the war of beleriand play out if Udun had risen once again? Could Morgoth have won? A theory video idea in honor of the season of fright 😱

    A nitpick -why is the likeness of Anarion on the eastern shore, while Isildur is on the western shore? Shouldn't it be the other way around since Isildur ruled Minas Ithil and Ithilien which lay on the eastern side of the River Anduin, while his brother Anarion ruled Minas Anor (which later became Minas Tirith after the fall of Minas Ithil, and its subsequent morphing into Minas Morgul)) and the all the lands west of the Anduin? Seems a bit of an oversight to me.

    There is a very large statue of a woman wielding a sword and beckoning others to follow her into battle. I think it represents Mother Russia and stands on Mamayev Kurgan in Volgograd (aka Stalingrad). It certainly evokes an emotional response just like the Argonath. I was moved by it, and I am not Russian. If the Argonath were real, it would be just as moving.

      @@Paulafan5 It was more than a suggestion, Cirdan (the oldest elf in Middle Earth btw) and Elrond implored Isildur to throw it into the Cracks of Doom near at hand, but Isildur said he was going to keep it as a weregild for his father and brother who died in the war.
      Elrond said at the Council of Elrond that when Isildur was killed it was better than maybe what else would have happened to him. If Isildur had kept the Ring he would have become a wraith himself is what Elrond meant.

    • @MountainFisher
      @MountainFisher 3 года назад +2

      @@JohnnyWalkerKat No, they killed Sauron's body on the slopes of mount Doom, Cirdan and Elrond were the only ones left besides Isildur. Isildur's father lay dead there along with the High King Gil Galad and Anarion had already died earlier in the battle. Cirdan and Elrond begged Isildur to throw the ring into the fires "near at hand". This story can be found in the Appendix at the end of The Return Of The King book, plus I'm not sure where, but parts of it are in the Silmarillion.
      Isildur also left an account of his last struggle in Minas Tirith where he copies down the fire writing on the ring. Gandalf read that account and went to the Shire and threw the Ring into Frodo's fire.
