      @GeorgeBPryor 2 года назад

      Nobody ever mentions the "fourth" layout. My favourite thing about this controller was that it was ambidextrous; you could hold the joystick in your right hand and 'sling' your left hand over the top to access the A/B/C buttons. You can even press the L and R buttons comfortably this way.
      This is actually why I skipped the Gamecube for its console generation. It wasn't until the Wii that Nintendo reintroduce ambidextrous controls.

And when I say I've used every controller under the sun, I'm talking Color TV Game 15 Paddles, Visteon GBA Controller, aka the Dorito, and the Pokemon Mini, aka Baby's First Gameboy, the device the size of the palm of your hand, the DPad the size of a penny, and A and B buttons each the size of a pencil eraser, and a power button a literal millimeter in diameter. Somehow Baby's First Gameboy, the Pokemon Mini, is more comfortable than the N64 Controller for anyone who has hand's larger than that of a 9 year old.

    • @RetrOrigin
      @RetrOrigin 5 лет назад +6

      @@atherdos4431 Well, in the N64's controller case, the most obvious thing is the "analog" (optical) thumbstick. It seems most people praise the N64 controller for being the 1st to have one or at least the 1st to standarize it. I would actually argue that the standardization of the D-Pad ended up hurting the development of analog controllers in the market. Reason being, analog controllers of all kinds, including Analog thumbsticks, exist since the early 80's. All Paddle controllers are potentiometer based analog controllers for example, but more importantly, the Vectrex is the 1st console to ever have an Analog thumbstick standard as its main input device and quite a good one at that. Not only that but it is potentiometer based (remember how Nintendrew mentions in this video how modern Analog thumbsticks are potentiometer based?)
      There's also the XE-1 AP controller for the Sega Megadrive (Genesis) and Japanese computers in 1989, which looks more closely to a gamepad if the Vectrex controller is not convincing to you. It has a left potentiometer based analog stick, another stick on the right side which is mostly used for throttle controls since it only moves up/down OR left/right (You turn the based in order to switch modes)
      This is also the 1st controller to ever have bumper/shoulder buttons (the SNES controller is often wrongly credited as being the 1st at that)
      Besides that there's also the Force Feedback being mentioned in this video, but Haptic interfaces did also exist before the N64 controller (one notable instance is the Aura Interactor)
      I don't know if you really want to consider the 3 prong design as innovative, I personally feel they didn't playtest this design enough and the fact that this is a very polarizing subject kind of proves it wasn't exactly a great design.
      I don't really care too much about people blindly crediting Nintendo for everything but the same people tend to hate on other companies that sometimes ironically actually created many of these things.
      Nintendo is an awesome company, specially in the software department (at least to me) but many people just get way to fanatical about them.
      Sorry for the wall of text, don't know how I could have compressed all that.

    Since the joystick is actually digital instead of analog, it has 0 issues with drift. Had they used better materials (or redesigned the stick and bowl) and eliminated the break-in wobble, this could have and would have been a highly praised joystick design.

  • @justinkeena6617
    @justinkeena6617 5 лет назад +12

    This could be a 99% Invisible mini-episode. It’s excellent work. The way you explain the design as innovative, though restricted by the materials of production, highlights what is so interesting about this controller. I had never thought about how, without the middle handle, it’s a SNES controller, but with the middle handle it gives not two but three control options. It let Nintendo ease developers into the 3D era elegantly.
    I knew growing up that Tetrisphere, for example, required the outer handles mode, and SM64 was best with the 3D mode, but never noticed FPS mode. And I never would have understood true analog without your explanation. Thanks for the deep dive into this under-appreciated artifact!

    I agree. It's a good controller. I still use it when playing classic games on my PC using a simple adapter. And using my middle finger, the Z button is actually still perfectly accessible to me in 2D mode, so I use it for Select. In fact, I can hit it extremely quickly compared to a normal Select button. I would bet that Nintendo thought about dual analogue, but wanted to avoid the very recent failure of the Virtual Boy, which had Dual D-Pads.

    I still remember the first time I held an N64 controller in my hands. It was sensational. A friend from school had Mario Kart 64 and the first time I tried the analog stick I couldn't believe it. It was just amazing.
    I think this controller was totally revolutionary and groundbreaking for its time. It was a pioneer in many things, such as the stick for 360º movements in 3D games, or vibration, things that were later copied by other consoles and companies.
    The fact that the controller offers different options to grab it ("M" shape), far from being a negative point or something to criticize, seems to me something amazing and that to this day remains unique. The design is completely avant-garde and I find it very, very comfortable, even today that there are other options and recreations with two grips like modern controls. Personally, I find the central grip of the original controller more comfortable for games that require the use of the analog stick, than modern designs with the stick relocated above and with two handles. And the fact that it offers three options to hold it, contemplating righties and lefties, seems great to me.
    I just don't understand the people criticizing this controller. Today in 2022, more than a quarter of a century after its release, I still find it amazing, comfortable and groundbreaking, and totally accurate to the console games it was designed to play. And if we add to that the fact that it came out in 1996 when none of these concepts existed, its value is even greater.

    • @backup_account_1

    • @backup_account_1

      Something I forgot to mention is that the standard grip on the center handle has something unique which is the Z button behind it. That is completely lost on two-handle controllers. And I think the Z trigger on the back is something unique to the N64 that can't be missed. Games aren't the same without that, no matter how comfortable the two-grip control is.
      It is no coincidence that many years later the Wii Nunchuk Controller had the same design. It was clearly a good idea.

    When playing n64 games with a modern controller it can be a bit clunky. When I played star fox 64 with a switch controller it was pretty messy because with emulating old games with new controllers you try to use the same layout (example A, B analog stick and C-stick stay the same). 3:22 "this position was rarely used at all." That's not correct. several games actually had the "2D mode" (especially fighters, puzzle, and racing games) as an option or used exclusively for movement (the analog stick would be completely disabled). Also, a lot of people - including my friend - used to only hold the outer edge handles when playing, and he'd move just his thumb over the control stick. It wasn't the recommended way of holding the controller, but he said it was more comfortable for him.

    For me, what I always loved about the N64 controller is how lightweight and COMFY it feels in the hand. For me, that's the most important aspect of a controller: good ergonomics! The 3-prong layout is weird NOW, but games on the console were designed around it, so it isn't like you ever need to access all the buttons at once. The D-pad is super rarely used in any N64 game, really. I always found it funny though that Nintendo "hid" a conventional 2D SNES style controller in the N64's controller... then developers almost never made use of it. Oh well, that's progress.
    And people sucking off the DualShock 1 controller, while it was influential, very few if any PS1 games made use of the dual control sticks, and almost every game was designed with a digital input in mind - so the analog feature of the control stick were wasted regardless.

    You know, growing up nobody I know hated this controller so I'm just going to assume that it's the internet being the internet and the reality is that more people liked it than gaming forums portrayed... because back in the day only the most hardcore of nerds were on the internet at that time. These days kids form their opinions based on the people they look up to, in this case it's pretty much always youtubers... and there are thousands out there who have never even held the controller who would say it's bad.. even though it isn't.
    The controller never felt awkward in my hands and my hands are pretty big now. The one thing I will agree with people on is the analog stick as you pointed out was a bit of a drag but other than that... the n64 controller is the pinnacle of bizarre yet cool controller design.. it was different and I think the industry needed that alongside the shift to 3D. These days things are pretty uniform and the most we see for change is a trackpad or a homebutton. I don't think reverting back to bizarre designs these days is the way to go but Nintendo definitely had the right idea when it comes to breathing life into consumer interest for games.
    It just REEKS of the 90's where everything was weird and gross but everyone was cool with it. The decade of YTV and stringy shoes and mushroom cuts. It was a great time to be alive I tell you.

    I find Nintendo's controller design history to be pretty fascinating. Especially when you see how one system influenced the ones to come afterward. Did you know a version of the N64 controller used in the LodgeNet Nintendo Gateway System used an analog stick design almost identical to the GameCube's, before the GameCube was launched? The thumb pad was the same as the standard N64's but the actual analog unit was the same as GameCube's. Presumably this was to address the fact that N64 controllers had a tendency to get very loose analog sticks over time due to excessive wear, but the high cost of LodgeNet probably meant not a whole lot of people were using it during a time when the GBC was almost ubiquitous among school-age children.

    I still see some 'RUclipsrs' try to use the N64 controller, and see then try to use the analog stick while there left hand is gripping the d-pad handle, and their right hand is gripping the c-button handle. Its like the idea of using your left hand on the middle (or right if your game supports it) just goes over peoples head. That being said, that analog stick just doesn't last too long, I've seen quite a few 'limp' analog sticks in the day, especially when playing 4 player games at my friends houses and everybody brings their own controllers. I also got a few blisters on my thumb in the day as well, but I feel like the N64 controller wasn't the only controller to give me a blistered thumb. The rumble pack and the memory card on the controller was a god-send back in the day, for the games that supported it at any rate. Also, as a fun fact, if you power on the N64 with the analog stick out of the neutral position, the position it is held in will become the neutral position. For example, if you hold the stick all the way down and turn on your console, your character will move forward if you let go of the stick and let it go to the center.
