4:00 Pressing L, R and Start all at once resets the 3D stick axis to the neutral position. Do not touch the 3D stick when you press those three buttons together.
I found the same controller with usb, different brand, 20 dollars for two. I like the sound of it, I only ever use the one stick on games, it has the 4 triggers, and I can repurpose the C buttons for a 6 button pad for fighting.
I was watching this entire review and went i went to like and sub i was shocked how low the viewcount is. This is a extremely high quality video and i hope it gets the attention it deserves
Unfortunately as much as I love the N64 controller the analog stick basically turns to dust after not too long. I’ve gone through a couple during my speedrunning days
Bro I love n64 controllers and I played smash religiously for over 10 years with my friends taking up. All My controllers joysticks are about as floppy as they can get. All the fake controllers suck though!
personally I dont think the brawler 64 is that good and I would never recommend it, for around $35-$40 you don't get anything better than the $25 Tribute64 controller. My brawler 64 has seen BARELY any use and my analog stick is already spazzing out when I push it in the forward direction. Also why does the brawler64 have analog style triggers for the Z button? I imagine it just makes the controller cost even more, it doesn't need those fake triggers at all
People always recommend the Brawler, and I'm always warning people about it. It's just cheaply made and it feels cheap in the worst way. The face buttons get stuck, the stick is not great, the shoulder buttons are bad, the slot for the rumble pack isn't sized right, it was making my N64 glitch out. Please people just buy a Tribute 64 instead or a used OEM with a tight stick and clean that thing out after every session. If you're really serious you can invest in a Hori or Steelstick, but don't waste money on the Brawler. That's my warning.
One note on the Brawler 64 - it is NOT compatible with the Transfer Pak so no Pokemon Stadium transfers from your OG Gameboy cartridge. I know the Hori mini pad is compatible with it, and of course original Nintendo brand controllers are too.
After returning to the n64 after a 24 year break and jumping back into Mario Kart 64 I wanted the original feel. I can attest to the controller similar to the Hori Mini mentioned which is blue. The brand is called iNNEXT n64 gamepad. I do have large hands and it is more comfortable to play with. The sensitivity does take getting used to as it has little to no dead zone. As I do speedrun mk64 now the iNNEXT is my daily go to when racing time trials. I favor comfort over long sessions as compared to an original which can be a pain after 2 hours.
I had the iNNEXT blue controller for almost four years. The control stick Broke off, but I managed to put it back on. I sold my iNNEXT USB version. I even bought a third party jungle green controller. I have a retrobit controller (two grips, gray)
Something tells me you didn't test the precision when playing goldeneye. Many third party controllers have joysticks so sensitive that goldeneye is borderline unplayable.
Lost interest when at the 1:40 mark when he talks about how the original controllers have a crazy lifespan and fantastic durability lol. They were notorious for having the worst joystick on the market and still rated today as having the worst joysticks. Those things wore out super fast even for the most casual players. Even the new re-release of the official N64 controller got a ton of bad press for keeping the same joystick tech from the original.
I'd probably use the shell from one of the 3rd party controllers to replace a ratty old OEM shell, also if I wanted to kinda make a switch to a different color that may not have been officially released by ninty themselves; Old Skool makes a pink and red one for example (Peach themed) that looks pretty cool.
I have original, Brawler64 and the Hori and I'd put them as follows 'S' tier - Hori, 'A' tier - Original & Brawler64. I'm currently trying to get a Switch N64 controller to pair with a bluetooth receiver I've just got
Thank you for making this video! I thought this was a multi-million sub-channel! Awesome job! I subscribed too I love this video and I will share it with some friends!
You mentioned goldeneye 007 and never showed how they perform there. This game requires unparalleled sensitivity for aiming. And these GameCube style sticks suck for that. So i was disappointed when your video ended and i could not see if any of the other controllers are good for goldeneye
The OEM with a replacement analog stick is a better S-rank than the stock analog stick. Stock analog stick on the OEM breaks down, rendering it useless...
About the analog stick. It's a been a long time but I saw someone who made a 3D printed analog stick with thumb dips for this controller so your thumb doesn't slip. He replaced the stick. Unforntunately, I can't find it.
The inext is my go to. I have 4 oem's and a hyperkin gathering dust. You still can't use the sniper rifle in goldeneye but oh well. I even love using it in turok rage wars, least you can adjust the sensitivity in that game.
How good are those amazon knock offs of the orihinal Hori controller compared to the tribute 64? I honestly like the original one shape more but i'm not sure about the quality.
Thank you so much bro! I'm actually going to reupload this to another channel and maybe converting this into my Shorts channel. EVERYTHING IS COMING TOGETHER 🔥
video feels based on opinions. with speedrunner in the title, you should have attempted the same speed run segment with every controller to see how really viable they are
I’m only looking to play WWF No Mercy where the analog stick is not used for anything accept hitting a special similar to activating an ultimate so every once in a while in a match and it being pressed any direction once activates your special move so I’m saying this to say the analog is not a factor at all. What is a factor is the D Pad because thats what you use to move around. So what is the best controller where I’ll be using the d pad and face buttons mostly A and B then sometimes c buttons. I ask because one of those controllers the d pad seems to be an after thought being placed a very short distance from the face buttons.
Does the controller pak actually work on your Admiral? Because I have had two and neither have worked. Which sucks since all of my favourite N64 games use the controller pak.
I would say that an official horipad is on par if not better than the original, I use mine all the time and I've had zero problems and much prefer the thumbstick over the official nintendo one which is stiff and makes my thumb hurt after a while.
Depends on what you play, it's still too sensitive and the d-pad is obviously pretty useless. I'd say it's good for most platformers but basically unusable for shooters.
Alguien sabe donde conseguir repuestos de acero para remplazar la palanca y accesorios internos del joystick de n64, me refiero a todos los empaques e incluyendo la palanca y base en acero, se que un tipo los fábrica, alguie sabe?
I didn't grow up with the N64 (had a PS1 that generation) and have only played N64 at friends' houses or after the fact and I really don't like the OEM controller. Like...at all. To the point I bought a Brawler64 for my Switch.
I just recently got an N64 controller and opted for an OEM that had its stick replaced with a Hori/Gamecube-ish style one. Gotta say: The stick is my only complaint. It's got a pretty big dead zone and an abrupt sensitivity curve. I was worried about the wear and tear on an original stick but now I'm wondering if that would have been preferable. Also one thing that bothers me about all of the two-grip designs except for the Hori Mini is the D-Pad is placed for the left hand only, meaning you can't really replicate a left-and-middle grip style. Could be a problem, depending on the games you're playing; that control style is rare but not unheard of.
I got a oldskool controller. It had the same problem as that other 3rd party controller of just moving down. Wgen it did that i just unplugged and blew into both the controller port and the plug on the controller itself and problem solved. Also its a step above the one shown in this vid. The problem with it is the analog stick is on meth with sensitivity.
What I do with most 3rd party N64 pads is turn them into arcade sticks if I happen to have leftover arcade stick parts. I typically use Sanwa Denshi levers and buttons, so I trust their quality. Speaking of N64 games that can be played with arcade sticks, you should probably give Killer Instinct Gold, RakugaKids, NBA Hangtime and Puyo Puyo Sun 64 a shot.
Yeah that third party classic controller is HORRIBLE, I bought one and to play goldeneye with it was more or less impossible when it comes to precision aiming and so on, its all or nothing when turning 😅 Recommend people to stay as far away from it as you can the joystick is only a plastic cover smacked on to a cheaper type of controllstick inside the controller and yes a have opened it up just to have a look at what the hell was going on 😄 Just stay away from it.
This isn't the first video I've seen where someone claims to have their original N64 controller and says it works great. I'm beginning to believe one of the following is true. 1) It's a conspiracy amongst Nintendo fans to rewrite history within the public consciousness. 2) The QC of the original N64 controller varied dramatically by region. While some people complain about the N64 controller for its odd design, I never had a big issue with it at the time. What I had an issue with was the shockingly bad durability of the analogue sticks. With every (first party) N64 controller I bought, within a month the analogue stick was loose around centre and it felt like absolute crap because it was grinding plastic on plastic. While it was technically usable, as time went on it would become a chore to use because the wear wasn't uniform, so the resistance would vary depending on direction and travel of the stick. Eventually it would not register the full travel and that's when you gave it to your friend to use as player 2 while you enjoyed the short-lived experience of an N64 controller in good condition. I see in a comment below that you've responded to that you acknowledge "the analog stick basically turns to dust after not too long", yet you didn't mention this in the video. You slipped up! I know you're a part of the Nintendo fanboy illuminati who are pushing the false narrative that the analogue stick of the N64 wasn't a poorly designed piece of crap!
Wait so you didn't even bother testing a genuine HORI pad? And you don't even mention the Tribute 64, imo the best option available on Amazon? Do you even speedrun N64 games?
4:00 Pressing L, R and Start all at once resets the 3D stick axis to the neutral position. Do not touch the 3D stick when you press those three buttons together.
I'm gonna presume he already tried that in the hex gate controller and it didn't work, since he doesn't seem to be an N64 noob.
Holy crap, I think value wise the chonky miadore makes it S tier. $15 for a two pack is insanely cheap.
I found the same controller with usb, different brand, 20 dollars for two. I like the sound of it, I only ever use the one stick on games, it has the 4 triggers, and I can repurpose the C buttons for a 6 button pad for fighting.

Thanks so much!! Hope it helps! 😄
Idk got my n64 watching habits to see. Also the captain besides Perfect Dark and Goldeneye is also a great choice
Same, I also am quite disappointed with how few options I have controller wise.
Unfortunately as much as I love the N64 controller the analog stick basically turns to dust after not too long. I’ve gone through a couple during my speedrunning days
It's hard not to! Now I understand why so many runners invest in Steelsticks 😅
@@trooperspeedruns5152 yeah mate steelsticks are definitely the way to go, I’d get one but they are hard to come by
@Crowmander FACTS 😖
Grabbed an 8bitdo hall effect Gamecube style N64 replacement stick. It is amazing. Hopefully they will come back in stock.
Bro I love n64 controllers and I played smash religiously for over 10 years with my friends taking up. All My controllers joysticks are about as floppy as they can get. All the fake controllers suck though!
Thanks for recommending the Hyperkin adapter. I was in search of a good adapter for my N64 controllers
I have all these controllers. The only one I use is that no name transparent blue one. It is the best N64 controller on the market.
Did we play on the same OEM controller? Everyone of my N64 controllers stick is busted and I was gentle on my stuff.
personally I dont think the brawler 64 is that good and I would never recommend it, for around $35-$40 you don't get anything better than the $25 Tribute64 controller. Thank you so much for doing this! I absolutely hate having to do this myself until finding a GOOD controller that won't cost me 90 bucks.

I'd love to see where an actual hori controller would do place on this tier list
I have a Retro-Bit Tribute 64 wireless, it's the only wireless option so far to feature rumble built-in, so far I haven't had any problems with it!
Something tells me you didn't test the precision when playing goldeneye. Many third party controllers have joysticks so sensitive that goldeneye is borderline unplayable.
What is the purpose of a tier if 4 controllers are tied for an A rank?
true argument u have sir. Good day sir!

You didn't speak about how the original 64 controller analog stick get mess up overtime with used
The OG Nintendo 64 controller looks weird, but works amazing well for those games. It's one of my favorite controllers honestly.
Bro is glazing about how "good" the n64 stick apparently is 😂
I have original, Brawler64 and the Hori and I'd put them as follows 'S' tier - Hori, 'A' tier - Original & Brawler64. I'm currently trying to get a Switch N64 controller to pair with a bluetooth receiver I've just got
What about the Nintendo Switch Online N64 controller?
You should have put the switch online controller in there as well. It’s literally a Bluetooth OG controller.
Thank you for making this video!
I thought this was a multi-million sub-channel! Awesome job!

i have no issues with my F rated controller using them on mayflash adapter and retroarch

TROOOOOOPER!!! This is awesome!!! More videos like this, please!!!
Thank you so much bro! I'm actually going to reupload this to another channel and maybe converting this into my Shorts channel.
EVERYTHING IS COMING TOGETHER 🔥
Really well done video. Very clear, and some of the controllers I was thinking about buying. I might just stick with the OG.
Well... Looks like I'll be picking up a used OG controller on ebay.
video feels based on opinions. with speedrunner in the title, you should have attempted the same speed run segment with every controller to see how really viable they are
Great Video, you deserve way more views thx

Love the review!
Does the Hyperkin adapter support rumble on Retroarch?
Where can I buy that adapter? And can I use the original N64 controller with it if I'm gonna use it on PC?
brawler64 or tribute64? looking to replace my used n64 controller because the thumbstick is STIFF!!!
lol knew this guy didn't know what he was talking about the second he said the oem stick is "flawless" are you shitting me
I didn't grow up with the N64 (had a PS1 that generation) and have only played N64 at friends' houses or after the fact and I really don't like the OEM controller. Like...at all. To the point I bought a Brawler64 for my Switch.
What is that ram pack cover on the N64??
It's a third party one from Amazon. Sold for people who are missing the original, since originals are hard to come by separately.
🤔 - I need to come back and watch this video in depth...
> 🎮 /🕹️ - That is to determine which is the best N64 controller...

So that's what's wrong with my usb controller
I now I have 4 wireless original controller 👌

don't put the 3rd party in f tier if your didn't get the right analog stick.
I changed the n64 joystick for the gamecube joystick..hehehe
No review if they rumble or not 😢
the third party f tier controller is still better than joycon drift
Yeah that third party classic controller is HORRIBLE, I bought one and to play goldeneye with it was more or less impossible when it comes to precision aiming and so on, its all or nothing when turning 😅 Recommend people to stay as far away from it as you can the joystick is only a plastic cover smacked on to a cheaper type of controllstick inside the controller and yes a have opened it up just to have a look at what the hell was going on 😄 Just stay away from it.
Steelstick?
I love and hate the original n64 controller
Look at it. LOOK at it.
Now stay far away from it.

1:58 The statement he just made is soooooo WRONG that I should not even have to say what's wrong with it.
I really don't like the Brawler 64.
Is it true only real controllers work with the transfer pac 🫠
