Mahlkonig E80s Grind By Weight could be the best grinder but could it also make baristas lazy?

  • I look up to Ross. No literally, he's like 6'9" so I really have to look up to him, but also, I envy him because he gets to play with one of the best brands of grinders on the market all day. Hemro group own Ditting, Anfim and of course their flagship brand, Mahlkonig!
You can't look past the King of Grinders' new addition the E80s GBW (grind by weight) without doing the double take. The 80mm diameter burrs make it one of the biggest and fastest on the market enabling it to pump out 100 x 20g doses in under 12 minutes.
Not only is it pumping out the speedy spros, it's grinding to an accuracy of 0.1g (in the field). This means, no more weighing the portafilter, dosing, weighing it again, fixing the dose, fixing it again then extracting. It's just one single movement. It can also detect all the different portafilters you have and recognises that you might have different recipes for each one and adjusting accordingly. It's so easy grandma will be a specialty barista in no time.
While it may be too big for home baristas right now, if you make enough noise, Hemro will hear you and make a version for home. So what do you think? Will it be the saviour of cafes? Or will it just make baristas lazy?

I am super passionate about coffee and educating people on all aspects of this amazing drink. I love bringing the stories back from the other side of the world about how they grow and process the coffee differently on each farm, in each region, and in each country. I also love helping baristas around the world make better coffee for themselves, whether they're at home, professional, competitors and or even just venturing out into the wide world of coffee.

I have the e65 gbw and it's fantastic but to be honest, they're a bit late to the party because the Sette 270wi has been out for ages and works really well. Lots of home setups involve weighing beans, grinding, and weighing the ground coffee. If Mahlkonig is waiting for customer demand, they're not looking hard enough. There were two things I thought could be improved on the e65 and e80 which is that you can't assign one portafilter to multiple recipes, and two, closing the hopper leaves a lot of beans between the steel plate and the burrs. That's a lot of waste that then has to go through the grinder when cleaning up.

Thanks for sharing! Yeh, I reckon they are going to ride with the x54 for a long time before making an eXX GBW for home baristas. They seem to be slow to the home market. I agree, they missed an opportunity to have at least 3 recipes per portafilter. On my 3 group Synesso there's no way to visibly tell which portafilter is which and so we'd have a lot of confusion if we tried to run the three recipes across them. It's almost not a selling feature at all.

Here is my 2c. If Mahlkonig is waiting to hear from the consumer, then they are going to be left behind, in terms of sales. I am very new to all of this but from my perspective, the Italians have dropped the ball, and now the Chinese are taking over. The Germans represent everything we want but they are going to lose the market to innovations from Asia. We are just on the cusp of that now. Mahlkonig needs to forget about its reputation and its history; that is going to be an anchor for it now. Waiting to see what the market demands is a strategy from a past era. Today you have to offer consumers things they didn't know they wanted. You have to give them a reason to replace their current grinder. Doing the same thing better won't increase sales because the products on offer are good enough. It's new features and new designs and new ideas that will create sales now.

I'd use it in the cafe for sure! Although, I really want the San Remo X1 now as it replaces all three of my grinders.
