I have a Bravo tamper. It is AMAZING. I can change the tamping force only by turning a small piece which makes the spring change from 8 up to 15kg (of tamping force). When I changed my Breville to a Flair 58, I was able to keep the tamper. All I had to change was the stainless steel bottom piece (it unscrews easily). The breville is 53mm and the Flair 58mm. To me, it's a stunning piece of handcraft.

Hi there, yes, we would strongly recommend having two fingers on the sides of the leveling collar as it will occasionally tilt if you hand is pressing with a sligh angle 🤍☕️👌
Understood… yes it does, so does the bravo that I have,,, the spring that levels the outer larger diameter plate needs to be stiffer…. The decent tamper which you didn’t review has this feature, and gives more perpendicular tamps
I have pullman 876 baskets and I'm looking at the Happy tamper. should I just go with the 58.55mm big foot version or custom it to 58.58mm to match the Pullman Big step?
Hi there, definitely custom it to 58.58mm as it will work with either Pullman or the VST 18g Ridgless which we usually prefer. An alternative option is to consider the new Pulm Tamper by Normcore, we are extremely happy with it and with the way you are able to adjust tamping pressure, less than 2 seconds to do so. Hi there, it is not a huge deal, but that is why we personally prefer relatively wide tampers. Try using dosing funnel + WDT, they after removing the dosing funnel, hit the portafitler on the table slightly to ensure the ground coffee bed lower abit, then tamp. It is better than tamping the ground coffee while it is at the top level of the basket. 🤍☕️

I already knew most of this stuff at this point but understanding start directions to go is where I'm getting stumped. I would have really been excited to have found this video a couple weeks when i started this research haha. Keep up the good work. On a more specific note, I have the 54 mm version of that stock Breville tamper and even in the stock basket that doesn't have perfectly straight sides. I struggle to get a full tamp without a bunch of coffee around the edges. Otherwise I have no complaint with that tamper other than the edges are a bit short since I use my fingertips on the edge of the basket anyway as a levelness guide... wish the base was a little thicker. This is why I want to upgrade anyway because it's kind of hard to tell if you're perfectly level unless you spin it to polish the puck at least halfway around, for me at least.

Why do people still use normal tamps like a Pullman when there’s self leveling and pressure controlled tampers out there. I’d assume everyone wants to control variables by having a repeatable controlled tamp.
We personally love calibrated tampers, but we understand why some people prefer manual ones. The Pullman is super easy to get a flat tamped surface with it and it is very precise, so we can understand why some still prefer it ☕️🤍
