I just started going to CoDA meetings and in one group they played a clip of The Shame That Binds You and it landed like Luke Skywalker blowing up the Death Star- I've been watching everything I can get my hands on.
What's crazy is I've been through a clinical master's program and I've been in therapy for many years and not once have I heard this man's name mentioned.
His ideas are sprinkled throughout the therapy world, but nothing I've experienced or been taught comes close to the potency and conviction and wisdom of this man.
I'm not religious at all, but do believe in a higher power and I feel a loving God or Holy Spirit or something sacred speaking through him.
May we all find the courage and the strength to heal the generations of pain and dysfunction that have rolled through time like a tsunami.
I don't know any of you but I feel lots of love for you and myself born out of the hope I now have. I wish i could give you all a hug.

I wish I knew of him in my teens it would’ve saved me a lot of heartache. Why is his videos not going viral? Why is his work not being taught in schools. I’ve been on a personal development journey and have been following some great people by John Bradshaw by far is the greatest wisest of them- his book Homecoming and the series on that has been a Godsend. The whole world needs to see his videos Especially pregnant women, people who are having children. They should be made aware of the inner child within them and made aware of the consequences of being raised in a dysfunctional family. I love Johns work, I feel like God is speaking to me when I listen to him talking.

Why is his work not being taught in schools? - Not yet, but it will be, like some schools teach mindfulness, however, it is not compulsory. An excellent book about the school system is "Dumbing Us Down: The Hidden Curriculum of Compulsory Schooling" by J.T. Gatto.

Incredible work this man has done. His seminars have helped me heal from family trauma and my codependency. Thank you John!

He was a great teacher, so much wisdom to share. His descriptions have proven timeless as today's psychologists are pretty much quoting his ideas word for word nearly 40 years later. Excellent series - I've been binge listening to them back to back this morning. Highly recommended. It's funny though how his voice reminds me of poet/spoken word performer Jello Biafra. Classic

I was thinking the same thing. Most of these self help books coming out today and word for word quoting this material. It seems like he was ahead of his time because clearly the audience is not getting it. I seriously wonder what would happen if they took this material and taught it to kids.

@@steftacular I think it could be integrated into family planning and post natal education

Thanks so much for sharing this. Utterly refreshing, right on. As retired psychotherapist I am grateful to be reminded of his excellent, compassionate work with shame, addictions and dysfunctional family systems He wouldn't believe what's happening today!

the things he says are so mind blowing to me... and then seem obvious... they're like an epiphany. i'm like "of course, how didn't i realize that before?"

The more things change the more they stay the same.
I first saw JB in 1988.
I think our society has short attention spans for the truth.

whoa. shame based eating is not just a physiological thing. it is an adoption of the mindset of the individual who relates to the abusive element that beats the behaviour into them/// ew. disgusting discovery.
