CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When the arrogant new doctor, Dr. Vinton (Andrew Robinson), explains the test results for Rocky (Eric Stoltz), Rusty (Cher) tears him a new one.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
This is the true story of Rocky Dennis (Eric Stoltz), a personable young man suffering from "lionitis," a fatal disease which causes hideous facial disfigurement. The son of freewheeling biker Rusty Dennis (Cher), Rocky is accepted without question by his mom's boyfriends and cycle buddies, but treated with pity, condescension, and disgust by much of the outside world. The local high school principal tries to get Rocky classified as brain-damaged so he won't have to enroll the boy in his school, but Rusty fights for her son's rights with the ferocity of a mother lioness. Rocky makes friends easily both at school and at summer camp. He also falls in love with Diana (Laura Dern), a blind girl who cannot see his deformed countenance and is entranced by the boy's kindness and compassion. Now that he's got his own life in order, Rocky sets about to wean his chronically depressed mother from her drug habit. Mask is the sort of story that might have ending up wallowing in its own pathos had the acting, direction and scriptwriting (by Anna Hamilton Phelan) been anything less than very good. The film proved a much-needed financial success for director Peter Bogdanovich, though unfortunately it didn't come soon enough to stave off his declaring personal bankruptcy.

What Cher says here is what my mom told me too. When I was diagnosed, doctors thought I would never be able to walk, speak and I could never go to school. I'll be 22 in one month, I can walk (just not too long), I know more words than most of people of my age and I just got a diploma in musicology.

There's no actress anywhere on earth that could have done a better acting job at portraying Rocky's mom, than Cher did. She was absolutely phenomenal in this movie !!

Sure he knew. Rare .People suffering from craniodiaphyseal displasia never reach the age of 20. They live as Kids and teenagers no more..life expectancy is very short ..sad but True.. And Rocky dennis didnt escape this rule.he died in his teenage years even if he graduated.🥲😢😭😭😭.

Cher was straight up gangsta in this movie yo lol. She was a real one for her son. The way she handled herself in such a difficult situation with her baby being bullied and dying before her eyes without crippling or coddling her son at the same time, that's a strong woman/mother right there. So inspiring.
Rusty wasn't in the mood for bullshit. She kept it real and told the doctor like it was.
That doctor deserved it. He was treating Rocky like a scientific experiment instead of a human being.
@@tmmastonRocky even tried being friendly with the doctor asking him if he was new and he just replied with a dismissive “yes I am”. No intention of having any relationship with his patient or any friendly chit chat. Only a pediatrician by occupation, nothing else.
'Dame' Rusty Dennis was a real person with not one but two sons. Rocky's older brother not even being acknowledge is complete BS. And BTW, Cher interpreted a real woman who actually was even fiercer in life than the movie portrays. There's the full interview on YT too. She and her first son both are there. Articles from Rocky's teachers also confirm that Cher made her much more low tone than she was. She truly fought for her son's right and she was the one who realized he was in fact intellectually gifted. The poem they read in the movie is actually Rocky's.

They didn't lie. Medicine isn't an exact science. Doctors still deserve respect for the good they do.
@@TheDooDooRanger Plus, there had only been about 20 recorded cases of Rocky's illness in all history. Knowledge of illnesses is obtained from cases, and you just can't make an accurate prognosis with so little knowledge. All the doctors really knew was that Rocky was going to die at a young age.

Not really “underrated” at all imo. She won an Oscar for this role & was an acclaimed actress in the 80’s along with carrying a successful music career before/during then. I wouldn’t call Cher underrated at all. Her acting career was well recognized.

that's so true. nothing like a mother's love. i'm not a smart person but my mother thought i was. it's why i am now a post graduate professional. i would have never had the guts to do any of what i do now if it hadn't been for her encouragement.
Idk if it's just me but he wasn't really "messing" with anyone. He was simply telling them what the doctors expected to happen.

I’d like to think there was at least some reality to this scene. Rusty and Rocky were a real mother and son. So I’m sure she was fiercely protective of him.

You recall that the other doctors sent him in there to talk to her with a snicker. They already knew whom they were dealing with.
They had probably made the same exact mistake a decade earlier and had their asses handed to them by Rusty and knew that was how he'd learn some proper bedside manners lol

Cher played an awesome biker chick in this and she would have made a great Gemma Teller if SONS of Anarchy was made back in the 80's and Cher Killed it with this role and I got to see her in Concert she was awesome.

So, having to deal with a son who haves a strange disorder or something else, while the mother is addicted to drugs must be hard to inter-face with each other. Cher plays a good role in this movie and haves it pact with avoiding the issue. Both actors are magnificent.

It is strange when Rocky's mother mentions that the doctors said that he will lose his sight. maybe I'm remembering incorrectly, but in the movie I don't remember Rocky having much problems with his vision. I may be dead wrong here, but in reality he was legally blind at the age of 6.
