CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When Mr. Simms (Ben Piazza) tries to prevent Rocky (Eric Stoltz) from registering at his school, Rusty (Cher) plays hardball.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
This is the true story of Rocky Dennis (Eric Stoltz), a personable young man suffering from "lionitis," a fatal disease which causes hideous facial disfigurement. The son of freewheeling biker Rusty Dennis (Cher), Rocky is accepted without question by his mom's boyfriends and cycle buddies, but treated with pity, condescension, and disgust by much of the outside world. The local high school principal tries to get Rocky classified as brain-damaged so he won't have to enroll the boy in his school, but Rusty fights for her son's rights with the ferocity of a mother lioness. Rocky makes friends easily both at school and at summer camp. He also falls in love with Diana (Laura Dern), a blind girl who cannot see his deformed countenance and is entranced by the boy's kindness and compassion. Now that he's got his own life in order, Rocky sets about to wean his chronically depressed mother from her drug habit. Mask is the sort of story that might have ending up wallowing in its own pathos had the acting, direction and scriptwriting (by Anna Hamilton Phelan) been anything less than very good. The film proved a much-needed financial success for director Peter Bogdanovich, though unfortunately it didn't come soon enough to stave off his declaring personal bankruptcy.

+Julie Herms - that’s not really a fair description. She had a pretty wild life but was a fiercely defensive mother when it came to Rocky, ensuring he had as normal a life as possible.

I remember years ago, I saw a man in a truck in the passenger seat looking at me. When I looked up and saw his face, it was burnt beyond recognition. My first responce was...to smile at him. And...he smiled back, a smile so beautiful, you swore you were looking at an angel. Outward appearence means nothin. Heck, Ive known pretty people who sucked at being human...totally hidious radiates to the outside and covers up any beauty that is there, just as a good soul, covers up anything others may feel is not attractive.

Yeah there is many amazing looking people out there but my god they are so ugly when you get to know them.
Physical beauty has been a curse for so many. They are treated with favor not for their choices but for something that has little to do with them...their surface. The desire for acceptance and status draws them into the shallows where they are in real danger of getting stuck. I think they hate themselves for it but can't help it so they hate others instead.

Mask was based on a true story. This movie is definitely a forgotten classic and was overlooked. This scene is both funny and satisfying at the same time. How many people have dealt with a pinhead in a beaurocracy setting they would love to tell off?

I don't know if I have this right or not, but I read somewhere back when this movie was first released into theaters, that Cher and Eric went to a fast food restaurant for lunch during a break in filming. Eric, in full prosthetic makeup, was being made fun of by some girl who obviously did not recognize Cher either. Cher, true to her character here, jumped right on the kid.

I doubt the story is real. Cast and crew never leave while "on location" to eat at a fast food. They have catering services 24/7. And Cher? I don't think so... She was already a diva back then.

If we all could've been THIS BRAVE in school! Rocky owned his appearance which eased other's discomfort. An amazing human being and beautiful soul.
Cher was straight up gangsta in this movie yo lol. She was a real one for her son. The way she handled herself in such a difficult situation with her baby being bullied and dying before her eyes without crippling or coddling her son at the same time, that's a strong woman/mother right there. So inspiring.

I could never imagine being in Rockys shoes where he was constantly stared and judged by looking differen't from the rest. Before the movie was over he finally found someone who loved him but they couldn't be together bc her parents wouldn't allow it. His personality was already gold if he looked 'normal' to the rest he would have had girls chasing him.

No he's clearly uncomfortable with Rocky's appearance and trying to hide his discontent with a fake sense of concern for his wellbeing. He even tries to ask for more info and to speak with Rocky's father, which has nothing to do with enrolling a teen into high school.

When Sam Elliott pulls up first scene OMG! He and Cher had so much chemistry in this movie!
Cher related a story that she was in a theater just before Mask came out. A trailer for it showed in the theater. When Cher's name showed on screen, the audience laughed. Cher was still known as a singer, and her glory days were thought to be over. She started crying as she sat. When Mask did come out, she blew everyone away with her performance, and it started her second career as a respected actress.
Sorry but you got the movie wrong. The trailer everyone laughed at was the one for Silkwood, not Mask. Silkwood was made before Mask, and apart from Cher it starred Meryl Streep and Kurt Russel. People cheered at their named but laughed at Cher's name.😎
Cher had already more than proven herself with the movie Silkwood, in 1983. To the point of being nominated for an Oscar. Nobody was laughing at her by the time Mask came out. So you've got your stories mixed up.

I saw this movie and cried when he passed away. That was devastating. But the courage and the big heart he had was just so inspiring. People can be so judgmental. He and his mother went through so much. So sad.

R.I.P To the real Roy "Rocky" Dennis. When I seen this movie as a kid it made me change how I looked at people that were different.
The funny thing is that the bikers are there most real and genuine people that Rocky had as friends

I wish they woulda done his story while he was alive tho. that way more truth would have been said
