Mark Knopfler wrote this about the Falklands war between Britain and Argentina.
It's a dying soldier talking to the soldiers around him, his comrades in arms.
    Heartbreaking.

Wow, Brothers In Arms song got me through some dark times during my teen years. I had no family and was being raised in group homes and youth institutions. It was tough trying to be the good kid who goes to school and is supposed to be happy like everyone else. This song kept me grounded and reminded that I am still human, and somewhere out there someone must care. In the end, I cared for me when nobody else did. This song helped me deal with that anger of rejection and abandonment and reminded me that the freedoms I enjoyed were bought by the blood of those who won those hard earned battles so long ago. The calming nature of the song never failed to help me relax as well. I still love this song and enjoy the bittersweet memories it stirs deep inside of me.

I just read your comment and it was like reading my own story of rejection and abandonment. Can I just say that if I had known you,,, I would have cared,,, and do now. - Not that it seems you need it as you have learned greatest skill , to love yourself. Something I have not yet worked out.
      Take care. ☺️

@@misswarda78 ❣️awe, I am so sorry that u walked a road similar to mine. My heart goes out to, as does my love. Please know that u are not alone and I hope that in time u will be able to come to terms with your past. I know it’s not and easy thing and it will be a lifelong process. I have been able to turn my experiences into my greatest strength over the years by lending my expertise in helping todays generation of homeless children and teens. I am a court mandated child advocate. As well I have volunteered my expertise working with the addicted and homeless in my city over the years which has been most rewarding. I have played a role in our highlighting the breaks in our Provincial system here in Canada and have spearheaded vital change in how we view and deal with such issues. It has been bittersweet being an adult with absolutely no family to this day however. But I do have great neighbours who are like family to me and I keep few friends who have been like brothers and sisters to me. I have made the most of my situation and have been greatly blessed over the years and have no want for anything material wise. The government who took me from my family and placed me in this horrid situation has formally apologized and I have even received substantial monetary compensation which has allowed me to capitalize in my adult life. Please work your past out, I know it’s not easy. It’s been said that time heals all wounds. That is completely false, but time can however ease that hurt as it does create distance from our childhood allowing us breathing room to take into account everything we experienced where we can begin the healing process. U are in my thoughts and prayers and yes, I would of loved and cared for u should we had known each other in another time, and u have that from me now. U are not alone, u are vital, u are loved 🥰. God bless u dear one! ❣️

@@elvinwhitebuffalo2849 wow, such an inspiring and wonderfully sincere and beautiful comment. Thank you dear soul for taking the time to reach out. Whilst I was not in institutionalised childcare (maybe it would have been better in my situation) I suffered terrible abuse from a narcissistic father who created a terribly dysfunctional family whilst hiding behind the respectability of being a ‘doctor’. I am now completely estranged from my family of origin who denied the abuse and gaslighted me for years. Whether I fly (I’m currently trying to complete my legal training) or fall (suffer with crippling depression) It was/is never enough and all just serves to feed their smear campaigns, scapegoating and ostracism. Of course it has knocked my confidence and I have blamed myself and felt rejected and repulsive for years even though there is a little voice somewhere deep down that always tries to be heard, telling me it’s not ‘just’ and something was terribly wrong.
You are right I need to disentangle my narrative, self differentiate and deal with my past. (Although the abuse has continued until very recently and I have finally made the decision to go ‘no contact’.
I am trying so hard and the music, free counselling, insights, advice and hypnosis on RUclips is a great start. Not to mention the beautiful souls I randomly come across such as yourself. ☺️💕
However, I am terribly isolated as a single mum with three kids and trying to make a new life for myself is so tough in isolation. The Uk doses not offer much in terms of community and English neighbours rarely know each other’s names. The trade off for privacy and nuclear family units is total isolation when the nuclear family breaks down. I firmly believe it takes a community to raise a child and right now,,, it’s me and the dog. 🙂
It also feels like it is all going to the wall over here. The UK is on its knees. Everything I voted against is happening. The economy, our human rights, our tolerance, our union, all under threat and I am surrounded by increasingly nationalistic and right wing morons who think it matters if they have a blue or red passport.
I keep trying, but it would be lovely to enjoy life again. I know that starts with me. I have been looking into Margaret Paul, ‘re-parenting/ self parenting’.
I will keep trying and will keep your inspirational success story in mind.
Thanks again. - Messages like yours restore my faith in humanity. 💕☮️🎶

@@misswarda78 I too am a product of various abuses, including sexual abuse by a so called uncle of a family I was placed with. Justice was never served to this man snd I had to fight in order that my abuse be recognized and acknowledged for what it was. Over the years I have learned the value of forgiving those who have hurt us, blessing those who have cursed us and loving those who despise us. Love overcomes all things, and through love and forgiveness can we find that inner joy that has eluded us. I too have had the privilege of raising three kids myself, albeit cut short to my ex wife’s unfaithfulness but u have had a taste of agape love and am forever grateful. Indeed, take advantage of the system as I did, where I received a full education, counselling and roads to prosper by. In Canada we too are experiencing the dismantlement of our society snd the situation worsens daily. It’s not easy but not entirely impossible either. I am on Facebook and should u like to exchange messages, my name on Facebook and Messenger is Vin White Buffalo. I would love to chat with u for the propose of encouragement and friendship. In the meanwhile, please take care of yourself and your children, God bless and keep u.

Great reactions! Absolute respects to Dire Straights. After hearing this song for the very first time, I went out and immediately purchased the CD. Once back in my car, I put it into my stereo and was magically stunned! I then removed all other CDs and had only the Brothers in Arms one for at least a month!
If I may, I respectfully suggest you listen to Home Free's rendition of this beautiful song. I believe you will be amazed when you also discover they are an A Capella group! It is hard to comprehend what the human voice is capable of... It is truly wonderful how the human spirit can create such beauty (Mark Knofpler) and also those who can continue giving life to it. Scottish actually. He references his home as the Lowlands and in an expanded story about the song, he knows he is near death and is telling his comrades that he will get home before them ....according to celtic mythology the souls of the dead take the low road back home, ahead of the survivors who travel the 'high roads'.
Look up the traditional Scottish ballad - Loch Lomond for further reference.

For me it's up there with Cavatina (also known as the Theme from The Deer Hunter) by John Williams and a song called Tir N´a Noir by a Norwegian band named Vamp (though that one has Norwegian lyrics, so would be difficult for anyone not Norwegian to understand).

    "These mist covered mountains

It’s a great song but it has a very important message - some people have mentioned the Falklands, Iraq and Afghanistan - all of which in my opinion were worthless wars where poor boys died for rich men’s glory - that said - the sad part (once again in my personal opinion) is that this song was written about the Battle of the Somme- one of the greatest injustices against all humanity - boys were sent over the trench - they were told to walk and unload their rifles because it was going to be a walk over - hmmmm anything but 60,000 human beings were either killed or maimed in the first hour of the battle - yeah - lions lead by donkeys- shame on them and let’s remember - poor people do not deserve to die to make rich men more wealthy 👍

Sorry folks, but Mark Knopfler was raised in a jewish agnostic family and is by his own words not religious. So no reference to a bible or jesus there.
Unreligious people also are empathic without needing a god.

Well sorry bud, I’m a hard core Christian (of conviction) here, and I’ve just heard this song for the first time tonight here and listened to it Multiple times (and cried a few times while doing so) and NOTHING - let me repeat NOTHING has convinced me that it has ANYTHING WHATSOEVER to do with faith, religion or Christianity. AT ALL.
I can usually sense the sentiment and sometimes meaning behind a song, and this seems to me to simply be Mark’s tribute to those who have fallen in battle (in the Great, and/or 2nd, World War) first & foremost, and then a gentle reminder to not start civil wars in our own countries, with our neighbouring civilians. I could go on somewhat about my feelings regarding the writing - and TONE, of the song, but suffice to say, I did not detect A SHRED of religious sentiments in this piece.. and trust me: if I did I’d be the FIRST to say so!
Anyways have a great day. Just wanted to share my thoughts on this incredible tribute brilliant piece of music by such a legendary band. 👍
