Kate Bush - And Dream of Sheep (Live) - Official Video

  • This is a special piece of film to accompany the release of the live single ‘And Dream Of Sheep’. The vocal was performed live while filming Kate lying in the huge water tank at Pinewood Studios. This was to create a sense of realism, as the character in the song is lost at sea. However it became more realistic than Kate had imagined. She spent so long in the water during the first day of filming that she contracted mild hypothermia. She recovered after a day off and carried on filming. Everyone agreed it had added to the authenticity of the performance. This film was then projected onto a large oval screen which hung above the stage during the performances of her live show.

This song might have saved my life. It was early September last year and I reached the lowest point in my life, shocked and dismayed by events reaching back to May that year. I almost did something life threatening to myself but this song kind of pulled me back from the brink, from the edge of the cliff. I love Kate Bush with every last drop of my heart, as a woman and as a great artist ever since I discovered her music as a 12 year old boy. All the love Kate ❤

So many Kate songs can have me reduced to an emotional mess, sobbing uncontrollably, I have to take care when I choose to play them. They touch me so deeply. I love listening to them, but if I'm a little stressed, overtired, feeling a little vulnerable, I can easily collapse in gut-wrenching emotional sorrow/regret/turmoil. Sometimes I do it to myself on purpose, an incredible emotional release. A Woman's Work is an example of one that gets me every time.

I needed to drift away from the experience i was encountering at the moment just so i could survive. I wore the hell out of my Hounds Of Love cassette tape just in the first two years after it's release. I didn't revisit the album until decades later when emi released it as a special booklet with a bonus cd. But I was able to put away those horrible experiences and found joy and love and laughter and because I had survived and I was stronger now, than I was at that time. Thank you, Kate Bush.

I quote from the book: "She later said she smoked her first cigarette at the age of nine, and has maintained a love affair with smoking throughout most of her adult life. And although she was never particularly keen on alcohol, she was well aware of drugs and their impact. In one of her unreleased songs, ‘Cussi Cussi’, she sings of getting “really stoned, really amazingly”, and in an 1978 interview in Record Mirror with the novelist-to-be Tim Lott, she was uncharacteristically direct, if not exactly open, about her experiences: ‘She experimented,’ wrote Lott, but “I’ve never taken acid,” said Bush. I don’t think I’m into things like that. I’ve seen a lot of people screwed up through it. The idea of it is really fascinating, though - to be able to see the room breathe, and stuff like that.”"

I discovered Kate Bush through the Hounds of Love album when I was 11 in 1984. It was the year my father died suddenly and Cloudbusting helped me through. Seeing Kate play live at the Hammersmith Apollo in 2014 from the middle of the 4th row was so emotional. I thought she wouldn't play Cloudbusting when the concert ended ..but she came back and sung it for the encore...an experience I will never forget.
Hounds of Love was released in the days well before Spotify when we would listen to whole albums. I always imagined the story she was telling on the Hounds of Love from start to finish and her live performance was exactly how I imagined - "And Dream of Sheep" was so powerful live- in fact, many powerful moments in that show that I will always feel privileged to have experienced.

Kate Bush, in my mind, and lots of other minds, I guess 😊, is a true musical genius, a true legend.
A couple years ago I watched a documentary about her and I was glad to learn that she has always been a big star in the UK, pretty much from the very beginning of her career. I wish it would have been the same for her here in the US, not just for her own success, but for all of those who never got the chance to fall in love with her like I did back in 1985 when I first heard Running Up That Hill on mtv I went out and got the Hounds of Love right away and I was totally captivated by the imagery that music created in my mind. Even at the youngish age of 15 I was totally gripped by the emotivenes of her voice and the melodies she sang, im still moved when the sweet tenderness of The Morning Fog kinda comes skipping and hoping in after the dark and scary ride we've just been on during the ninth wave. Not long after getting hounds I picked up the Dreaming, (one of the greatest album covers of all time, btw ❤❤❤😊 such an incredibly beautiful woman), and these two albums are two of my favorites of all time by any artist. I can never decide which one i would take if i could only have one. I don't think enough people appreciate The Dreaming, at least thats the impression i got from the aforementioned documentary I watched, perhaps they do now but not when it was released. But i guess I get how it was so very unique and ahead of its time when it was released. Anyway, I wish I could have been there it must have been amazing. Although I probably would have gotten thrown out by screaming " KATE, I LOOOOOOOOVVVVVVVE YOU!" at the top of my lungs during the first time the music became quiet.😊

Surely this will be buried but I was once lost at sea, several kilometres off the coast of Western Australia, kitesurfing when the wind turned and I was stuck drifting further and further out to sea.
When I was about 15 kilometres from the shore (a guess because the shore was no longer visible to me), I made the very hard decision to jettison my kite, my only means of floatation but also wrapping me in lines and being pulled by the wind further out to sea.
I floated in the ocean, no idea which way to start swimming, no life vest, only a light wetsuit and a kitesurfing harness around my waist. I decided to swim in the direction where the wind was coming from, since it was strong enough to be spitting off the tops of the chop at me.
I alternated strokes between freestyle, breast stroke, backstroke, sculling and resting but after a few hours of this I was absolutely exhausted. I had made good progress from being scared and land was now visible but I was still a good 5 hours swim from the shore.
I laid my head back in the water, my ears under the water, it was starting to get dark now, I drifted off to sleep, I needed to rest my muscles. I couldn't keep my eyes open.
I wasn't worried about sharks or drowning, I love the ocean, I was here now and this was just a part of my life I had to experience.
I was resting for only a moment but I heard bells ringing. Actual bells. Dingly Dingly ding.
    Dingly Dingly ding.
    Dingly Dingly - - what?!
I fell asleep! I drifted back out to sea. I had lost sight of land, I had lost my bearings and the sun was setting now.
I was starting to panic now. I wasn't going to be overdue for a while as I was on a surfing holiday, no one knew I was out today. It would be morning before I was overdue.
I started swimming aimlessly on my back. Sculling water past me as I stared at Sirius and Canopus appearing in the night sky.
Wait. Sirius and Canopus are in the West at this time of year!
I had a bearing now. I kept swimming as I lay on my back, the wind had died down now. I was buoyant enough to not sink, probably aided by the kitesurfing harness.
Soon enough, Sigma Octanis was visible, as well as Rigel Kentauris, so I had a true south bearing now too.
I maintained my pace for several hours, just watching the stars and slowly swimming back to shore, until my head hit something.
    Bonk.
    A crayfish pot float.
I looked towards shore and I could see lights now. Flashing lights. It looked like a car on the beach maybe, not unheard of for some of the local beaches with offroad vehicle access.
I resumed my pace and continued to swim until it was shallow enough for me to stand, where I slowly trudged up the sand and collapsed on the wet sand in a heap.
I woke up to the sound of a 4 wheel drive on the beach, it was still night. Just some people partying on the beach, they had a bonfire going. I crawled towards the fire and fell asleep next to them and their fire.
They must have been absolutely amazed at what they were seeing.
They saw that I had been through an ordeal and was suffering from hypothermia. They put a blanket on me and moved me a bit further away from the fire and gave me some water and this woman, she must have been a mother because she held me close and I felt so comfortable. She held me close as I fell back to sleep.
I had been "lost" at sea for 18 hours.
Those people who saved me and kept me warm with their fire?
Now you can choose whether you want to believe this part or not. But for me it's what happened.
When I woke again, the sun was rising, I was on the dry sand. I was still freezing cold but the sun was warming me up quickly.
There was no sign of any people, no 4 wheel drive tracks. No bonfire. No blankets, no people at all.
I am sure that I would have died multiple times over if not for several, unexplainable situations. The bells, the lights on the beach, spotting Sirius and Canopus, the bonfire and the people comforting me on the shore.
Spirits? Angels? Very tidy and clean good Samaritans who were also on the run from the Law?
I go back to that beach once a year and just sit there and watch the sunset over the ocean and think about my life.
I am a strong swimmer. I now teach my daughter to be a strong swimmer.

Then I randomly click on this video, out of morbid curiosity of not having seen Kate or her work in 15+ years. Not even a minute in and tears are welling up. I'm not even consciously thinking about the damn song! No prior exposure to it. Take it from a 'non'-Kate fan: This woman has something otherworldly emoting powerfully from her soul.

Hey, if you want, this song (and the entirety of The Ninth Wave, the concept suite this song is from that the rest of which was performed live at the Hammersmith Apollo in 2014) is taken from side B of the album Hounds of Love. If you want to listen to the whole thing maybe you'd want to check it out.
One note though - It's from the mid-80s, back when Kate Bush was much younger, and so her voice is brighter there. So you mightn't like it as much as this version here.

You need to look at her music from Hounds of Love forward. The sing-songiness is at its worst on her second album. I can’t stand that album because of it. The first has some, the third a bit, and the fourth a bit. The fifth onward doesn’t really have that and it comes across as a lot more mature. The fifth album is where this specific song comes from actually. It’s part of the second side of that album, which is a narrative of a woman lost at sea. This is the first song of that side of the album.

This song personifies my brave, beautiful and strong mother. She had just been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer before I attended this extraordinary concert in London. I'll never forget it as I wept through the whole thing and I played this stunning song at her funeral. I think of her asking 'let me be weak, let me sleep and dream of sheep' ❤️ She was absolutely exhausted by the cancer but fought it every single day until the end.

Concerts - as in you went more than once? Oh you lucky lucky person, I'm heartbroken, I live in Shepherds Bush but was in hospital at the time - I so wish Kate would release a dvd *sob*

The only woman whom I have never met that I was always madly in love with.
And this was just shockingly good, I remember it well, putting it on for the first time. And listening in silence to the absolute perfection of 'like poppys, heavy with seed'.

Total dedication to her craft. Total Pro. Found her faint breathing frightening. Kudoes, Kate.

Maybe because it works at two levels? The obvious one - a story of someone shipwrecked struggling to keep awake and afloat but also just wanting to give up the struggle and drift off - and the metaphorical subtext: human suffering more generally and our human instinct to overcome it whilst also wanting blessed relief from it by drifting into eternal sleep.
