Paul Greyrat and his relationship with Rudeus is one of the most interesting things in Mushoku Tensei (Jobless Reincarnation) and now the Mushoku Tensei anime has started to show some of the best Paul and Rudeus scenes from the light novels. With the reunion of Paul and Rudy in Mushoku Tensei episode 16 Family Squabble, we see a fight between Rudeus and Paul based on both characters failing to understand each other's situation. But what can we say about Paul Greyrat as a character in the anime so far? This video is a character analysis of Paul Greyrat up to the events of episode 16, and while it does contain some minor information from the Light novels and web novel, it has no spoilers for later plot points, storylines or characters. How did Paul cheating on Zenith with Lilia affect how we and Rudeus see him? Is Paul Greyrat a good father? Has Paul changed since the teleportation incident?

I like Paul as a character. He's portrayed as an actual parent who makes actual parenting mistakes. You don't see a whole lot of that in anime. Usually if a parent is flawed in anime it's in some over the top way.

I never hated Paul. I certainly don't think he is trash but he was wrong here. Regardless of why he treated a Rudy the way he did, he did it. His child was teleported to a dangerous faraway continent and his first response was deprioritize Rudy's emotional well-being and attack him. Paul didn't pause to think of Rudy's side when the bullying incident happened. Rudy had to call Paul out on it. I guess you could say he did listen to Rudy this time but did he truly listen or did he just hear him? Rudy embellished the story which Paul should've immediately known was being done. If everything was peaches and cream, Rudy would've made it to Millis long ago. Rudy bringing up Paul's womanizing was Rudy lashing out and not necessarily indicative of how Rudy views Paul. I think Rudy loves and respects Paul. He even mentions how he respects him. We know that Rudy is older mentally but no one else does. They know that he was rather self sufficient and clever but they still see him as a child. Honestly he is. He needs the connections that are formed in childhood. It's kind of the whole point of reincarnation. Paul did kind of do him a disservice by sending him away with no contact at 7 years old. A lot of bonding occurs during those years and he was not present for it.

I believe that the situation with the Funi subs regarding his first words to Rudy in the table suggests that he sarcastically saying that he is amazed that Rudy is doing well while in Muse subs, it was suggested instead that Paul is at least really glad that Rudy survived the incident before their emotional outbursts kinda twisted people's impressions about Paul's character in a more negative light especially that it shows that Paul genuinely cared Rudy's well-being but his joy was getting overshadowed by what it seems to be like Rudy just undermining the incident like it's not a big deal..

Episode 16 is the classic lost in translation argument. People not knowing truly how to communicate with each other.
This was highlighted in the early episodes as the communication between Paul and Rudy was always more of bro conversation rather than a fother and son talk.
There are times when fathers and sons have trouble saying what needs to be said because they don't want to lose the status they have in the eyes of the other. Leading to assumptions about the other and never really understanding each other's feelings.
Truly, both are correct and wrong at the same time but seriously this is how they established their relationship and in real life is almost insurmountable to recover from.

It's kind of inevitable that Rudy and Paul can't have a natural father-son dynamic, especially on Rudy's side; in his inner monologue, Rudy only ever refers to his isekai-parents by their first names, so it's clear that he can only ever see them as nice older people that take care of them, instead of a mother and father.

Thinking about it realistically, that port town was perhaps the only time Rudy could have seen Paul's messages. Rudy was transported the literal farthest point away from the incident, any news from the Feiorra region would take the longest to reach him. 2nd, Paul didnt set up the search organization the instant offer and probably would have taken a few months to set up to get info out, which is fast as a person can walk. Lastly, Rudy was stuck in the beast village until recently waiting months for the rains to let up. For the first few months Rudy couldnt get the information because it wouldnt have reached him yet so far from the incident. and Rudy couldnt see any info for the last few months because he was isolated in the Beast village. The only realistic time to actually get the messages and info was to go to that Port town's guild but he never went due all the incidents, Hitogami getting him his foresight, thinking about Reuijid, and the smugglers. But, the gang seemed to have stayed a few weeks in the town since he mastered his eyes. Rudy didnt have a year and a half to get info and learn about the incident and visit a guild while trying to survive, he had only a few days to weeks realistically obtain the info. Also, theres te idea that maybe they didnt talk to people or hang around with them because they took on the name Dead End, an ominous name so no one wanted to be around them and/or having Reuijid in the party where people avoid the Superd or the gang avoid people to prevent problem if they learned about Reuijid. And, maybe Rudy said Sylphies name because she was that was the most vulnerable to him since Zenith and the maid were previous adventurers and could take care of themselves. Its like yelling out your pets name name when you realized a disaster at home happened.

The teleportation incident showed the admirable side of paul. In a way, by basically being a single dad, he became a good father but also became a broken man. Furthermore, in light light novels, especially when they were about to save zenith from the time Rudeus received the letter up until the fight with the hydra paul was full of self-loathing. This actually made me sad, knowing that he did try his best, yet he felt as if it was not enough.

Great MT episode, great Natalie analysis.. :)
I really like this reunion of Paul and Rudy, both had faults and good arguments on their side, and it is so typical for them to misunderstand each other basically in the same way.
My one thing about the Sylphie comment though.. While this also is a misunderstanding, Rudy thought his mom was safe, I don't think that Paul would have any standing to be angry over it anyhow.
The reason: the way he sent Rudy off to Eris. It was done by force, and communication was cut between them by design - Paul's design.
We know that Rudy took it well, but Paul only had faith to go on for that to be the case. Zenith obviously hadn't stopped this either, so if Rudy had taken great issue with this and started prioritizing his other relationships ahead of his family, then the fault of that would lie with Paul.
I still agree that it was a good decision to send Rudy off, but its execution left some glaring flaws.
The message Paul left Rudy in adventuring guilds has the same problem. One way of reading it shows how much trust he puts in Rudy. Another way of reading it could easily indicate that he doesn't care that much about Rudy, only about the female (/real) members of his family.

  • @zkeletonz001
    @zkeletonz001 2 года назад +9

To me this confrontation was mostly about Paul taking his feelings of guilt and frustration, over not being able to find his family, and transferring them onto Rudy. Up to this point he's obviously dealt with how he's feeling by getting drunk and hoping that Rudy was out there somewhere doing what he hadn't been able to accomplish, finding his family. So when Rudy shows up and dashes Paul's hopes he also became a convenient target for him with the way he told his story. Making it sound like he was off doing nothing particularly important while there was an emergency going on made it oh so easy for Paul to take all the anger he'd been feeling toward himself and direct it onto Rudy instead.
I also think Paul has no business getting upset about Rudy asking about Sylphie instead of his mom when he never even once tells Rudy, his own son, that he's happy to see him again, or even that he's glad he's alive.

Rudy knows how to push Paul's buttons and Paul knows how to push Rudy's buttons and they see themselves in each other, warts and all. They both have issues with monogamy and they hate themselves for this weakness but will sacrifice everything for their families. Paul thinks more with his little head, though, and that gets him into problems. OK, so I dont remember the whole story, but the no sex during pregnancy thing harken back to what the demon empress said about twins that died in the womb. Basically, the soul and mana determined at birth is a certain amount (and can increase through training) but if you had a twin who died in womb, the soul and mana get absorbed by the other one growing life, giving them more mana. But this massive amount of mana is in part linked to Laplace, the demon emperor and the legend of his reincarnation.(And also because a certain cursedly unlikeable individual would go around killing those of such high mana potential over the past few centuries) So having sex risk the chance of adding a 2nd child that can either die or kill the first child, causing what is likely a very bad outcome.

I really liked Paul's character. He makes mistakes but he really is trying to be a better father and role model to Rudeus. I remember him encouraging Rudy to practice fencing numerous times and it was the excitement of him training his son to become a swordsman like himself. There was something very affectionate about that. He also gradually accepted that Rudy is a mage and he hired Roxy to train him in magic. If he was really stubborn he would've refused to let Rudy train in magic and continued forcing swordplay on him. But Paul is a smart person, he continued to train Rudy about how to face a swordsman opponent head on, this practice would serve him in the future when he was met with smugglers in the beastman village. Alot of Paul's actions seem self-serving when looked at through Rudy's pov but when you think about it through a parent's pov, then it all makes sense. I tend to take Paul's side in the argument, that Rudy had been on vacation for over a year and he didn't bother contacting or asking about his family. In that respect Rudy is seen as being childish and inconsiderate.

Weird flex but I've read the light novel as it was being translated, Paul was never someone I could bring myself to dislike, when we are children we tend to see our parents as heroes that can do anything but as we grow up we begin to understand that their human too and have just as little clue of what their doing in life as the next person, and Paul stood out to me as being a prime example of that. his a good man who is capable of doing great things but also just as capable of making stupid mistakes, his only human, and I really can't bring myself to dislike him for it.

Dang, I gotta say Ms. Hunter I really do love the content of your videos, I'm Subbed, but still hate having to take ALL the bass(not the fish) out of my speakers to listen to them. J Aubrey has the same problem, and then Chibi has the opposite problem. You CAN get decent quality near-field monitor speakers for 100 now, Proteus makes the best for that price, and then you would know... though maybe that is just the sound you are going for, but having a good natural sounding balance of lows, mids, and highs really does make it easier on your listeners who have anything better than the cheapest sound set up. Keep it up though, either way you love much of what we love and your insights on those things are very enjoyable.

It's probably already been said down there somewhere but I wanted to share my two cents also, lol! As far as Paul, I think for the most part with the exception of cheating on his wife and how he treated Rudeus after he lied about Paul forcing himself on the other woman (I get it, but he could have handled it a lot better), he isn't truly a horrible father. As far as I can tell he did his best to raise Rudeus with the skills and knowhow necessary to survive the world HOW HE KNOWS IT whether its antiquated for the current times or not. Kind of like how I raise my son, I have always taught him to be kind, courteous and respectful of people, if he is approaching a door and someone, male or female or whatever is following close behind, I taught him to hold open the door and allow them to enter first. Antiquated? Yes. Was I raised that way? Yes. Would I ever teach my son otherwise? No, because I would rather my child be respectful of people and kind than to end up a disgusting little shit that cant be bothered to be a decent human being and what I mean by that is raising children is a slippery and often times disastrous slope and certain behaviors are hard to break, so I see Paul as trying to "undo" so to speak, the disgusting and strange behaviors he is aware his son possesses but struggles to adequately deal with them in a more proper way. Because as a warrior everything is a dragon, like how a hammer thinks everything is a nail, lol! That's just what I get from the context of the anime, I haven't read any of the manga so there's probably lots of character development I'm unaware of.

I try to be amused by all the people (mostly in other videos comment sections) taking Paul's side in the fight, or saying Rudy is also at fault because mentioning Sylphy means he does not care about his isekai family. Of dysfunctions that get carried over to his new life, family is not one of them. In episode 4 Rudy takes action to keep family together. In the recent fight with Paul, Paul buries the headline about missing mother for 20 minutes. Paul can't bring himself to tell Rudy that mother is missing until it will win points off of Rudy's concern for Sylphy.
Rudy never meets anyone other than Eris that was teleported until the day he reunites with Paul. Paul doesn't mention missing family, only missing people. Once it comes to blows, Norn shows up, suggesting the possibility that other family is around. Rudy has no reason to not think that Zenith is somewhere nearby, or else Paul would have said something. People can't expect Rudy to worry about Zenith when he has no idea that she could be in the realm of danger. When he is finally told that Buena village was hit, his mind naturally goes to the vulnerable child he protected from bullies for 2 years. A thing that breeds a sense of responsibility. I will agree that Rudy looks at Paul different than a normal child would, but he still cares deeply for him and the rest of his family. Evidence being that the conflict with Paul causes him to vomit in the next scene. Not getting along with Paul devastated Rudy more than being falsely imprisoned, naked and splashed. So much more than any other event that Eris is ready to do murder to the person that affected him so.

Good analysis , i agree in many points and is reliving to see someone else thinking that Paul is just taking his frustration on Rudeus , he did not found the ones he care the most and have to keep rescuing other people around, he was hoping that his genius son would be more successful than him and when the story he hears , rudeus is a bad storyteller , is about adventuring than the desperate search as he does , he got even more upset and frustrated .
It is kind of funny how the two times rudeus was send in a journey they are so alike , both time he was training when someone arrives and soon after he is knocked out and awake in a strange place with strange people .
Paul made some great mistakes , some can be understood, like the cheating was a moment of weakness because he was backed up, anime dont tell but he wasnt having activity with zenith preg and ended up doing it, and also as anime dont tell, his relationship wasnt the same after it, he still had the responsibility as a father to both child, but lost all privileges as a husband , but one thing i cant forgive him , but anime dont even touch, is that letter telling rudeus to cut contact , paul just took from rudeus the chance to see his sisters growing up, something that can never be given back , also his mother , lilia with selphie as aggravating .
This episode put a heavy responsibility for the next one as i know what the next big arc is about, if things arent settled right, it will be weird to go from despair to "fun" times.

I also took Part of Paul's annoyance was Greyrat politics. Thinking after a few years Rudy with that side of the Family in their internal hierarchy he forgot about his real direct family. I'm not sure about the exact timeline, but I think Rudy has probably spent more time with Eris than Paul, especially as a father would consider toddler years unaware/retained.
Like you have to think about it, Rudy was all set to Graduate Eris the day of the calamity. He was supposed to be finished with that family. And it was getting dangerous to play house politics, as we saw what happened to Grandpa last episode or two.

    • @NatalieXHunter

Yeah, I didn't really want to talk about Greyrat politics too much because it would lead to talking about things that haven't really been introduced in the anime yet (like the Notos Greyrat line, and characters like Philemon and Luke), but you're definitely not wrong.

It pretty much needs to because there are important scenes for Paul that Rudy isn't there for before their next conversation. Wonderful video, thank you.
I have a theory I would like to hear your thoughts on regarding why Rudy never bothered to ask around about the Disaster. I've seen multiple ones that sound interesting but this one thing I have not seen mentioned. Before Rudy even woke up from the disaster, he was already told it's name and was given a task by a certain entity. I've heard someone mention that in the LN/WN? he mentioned he forgot because he was to busy with surviving, taking care of Eris and the Supard/Superd's reputation. And anime shows us this, it's all that's on his mind.
From my point of view the reasons he did not think about it are many and all help to cloud his judgement:
    - he was acting like this was an event for him, even though earlier in the series he realized he could die at any time (proof of this is him mentioning events on the boat he is looking forward to)
    - while the entity told him to "help the man", he chose to distrust it but still help the man, yet I feel he subconsciously accepted the information he was given about the event, so from the entity side of things he was still doing something that Rudy, might have done? wants him to do anyway, the entity is also responsible for him being involved with the smugglers and missing the letter? it's a two point thing that depends on how much the entity knows but it seemed to know of future events, ergo it would know that Rudy meets the smuggler and so forth, don't see why it would want this though
    - people tend to believe what they want to believe or what is more convenient for them (I believe the author understands this and can only praise his writing)
    - I doubt Rudy and Eris were the only ones TP-ed to the demon continent, so I believe that if he did not have tunnel vision we would have seen other humans in the cities he passed
So I for one love Paul, he's a wonderful father, but a flawed human and bad husband due to him cheating. So I am on his side of things, because if Rudy was thinking clearly he had many chances to realize. Word of the disaster must have spread to port towns so if he just did what a true adventurer does and kept an ear to the ground he would have found out.

It’s more complicated than just Paul cheated, don’t forget that he’s from a society of polygamy while his wife is from a society of monogamy so him not cheating would be harder since there’s less of a concept of that unless you sleep with someone else’s wife. It’s like that kids toy analogy people use of trying to push a square into the circle hole but it’s actually in this case you pushing the circle piece through the square hole, sure it fits but it’s not a perfect fit.

    • @NatalieXHunter

I can't really talk about that entity given I've read the whole series so I know too much about what the deal is with that to really talk about it in anime only terms, but really the entity only gives him advice twice during his time on the demon continent - when he is first teleported it tells him to help Ruijerd, and it also tells him to buy food and walk where Kishirika will be.
I think it would have been very hard for him to run into other survivors unless he knew to look for them. The demon continent is the most dangerous place in terms of monsters, so a lot of people teleported there would have been killed, and as we saw with Paul's group, it was also the case that a lot of people ended up being captured and enslaved after wandering into the wrong places. Seeing slaves around isn't unusual, so Rudy wouldn't question it, and it's not like everybody in the whole region who was teleported was human, or that there were no humans already on the demon continent, so even seeing humans wouldn't really make him wonder if they were people like him who'd been teleported. I think he genuinely just assumed given he, Eris and Ghislaine were at basically ground zero of the event, and that they'd had that peculiar interaction with Arumanfi right before it happened, where they were accused of having something to do with what was happening, that they were the only people affected.

There were no other survivors on the Demon Continent, or at least not many. Most were transported to the wilderness and died there.

I mean pual promising to be faithful to zenith and he did alright. but she basically told a a drug addict to stop doing drugs and he did for 4-6years? Im not saying he wasn’t an ass but its like giving a crack addict keys your house and saying don’t steal.
Honestly i saw a video about Rudy’s perception.and how the anime captures his actions and he’s basically a kid in action and thought but his perception of him self is a dirty old man which he hates himself in multiple ways.
Honestly I don’t understand why people hate rudy I mean at most pity him but people seem to ether hate great story telling or they don’t see how shitty his previous life was the dude was beaten and what would be public humiliation and pyc torture because they left him tied up and he was previously just a kid that got way to into computers and let his school work slip.
His parents should have at least sent him to therapy get him into another school or home school him something so he didn’t slide into that depression and didn’t have a fear of the outside world like he had. ( i am assuming that they kinda slid him under a rug because they didn’t want other people to see that they had a son with a mental illness) so they didn’t like that he was a shut-in but it was was a better alternative than others seeing him.)
Back to current: they both made assumptions about how each other’s time was used. And that being a huge wedge between rudy and paul . I mean he had to worry about helping rujard, hittogommy (man god), money, eris. He was told that it was a huge teleport event but he could have thought it was on the scale of just the city he was in . thinking it would be larger would be a stretch because he didn’t believe that someone split the continent in two .

I think it's funny people who trash talk a person oblivious to their own flaws in todays society everyone looks outward but never inward a dying practice that needs to be reborn in society. No one is perfect even better the person who got raped ends up seducing him and bearing his child yeah paul had a weak moment I might be ignorant of that info I wonder how many women and men out there who wasn't a 100 percent sure being with someone when they bust their cherries they were ready and planned out most of the people I know haven't and the few that have are rare that's realism. A fantasy world that's not always fantasy and that's what I like about it

I really hated Paul during the episode that they reunited. If we remove that we know Rudius has been reincarnated then what Paul did was not just horrible as a person but down right awful as a Father. He berated his 11 year old Son that made it back home alive from being Teleported to another Continent for not doing "better". Then when his Son get upset for being treated that way and verbally lashes out at him he PUNCHES him. The Father who just found his missing 11 year old Son berates and physically assaults him shortly after seeing him. If it had been me I would have never wanted anything to due with him again, just as Geese said to him later. Paul was lucky to have a friend like Geese who was willing to speak the truth to him when obviously the people with him where not. The next episode has let me forgive Paul for this, since Rudius is willing to, but I still think he has been a bad Father to Rudius.

Meh, I am sure that maid was in the wrong too along with Paul. I was a skeptic that they would allow multi marriages in that universe. But whatever. It is like Paul never heard of it. I think I may have found a plot hole...

People do have multiple wives in this setting sometimes, but for Paul that wouldn't be an option he would have considered because of Zenith's religion - she wouldn't normally allow it.
