Who is Laplace? Mushoku Tensei Explained

Demon God Laplace is one of the most intriguing Mushoku Tensei characters, especially if you have also read the prequel web novel Old Dragon's Tale (or listened to my audiobook style readings of it here on my RUclips channel!). In this video I look at what happened to Laplace after Old Dragon's Tale, why he became so hated and feared by characters like Perugius and Ruijerd, and how he is connected to Orsted, along with discussion of other things from Mushoku Tensei lore such as Fighting God armor, Technique God, and of course, Hitogami. This video contains spoilers for all of the Mushoku Tensei light novel and web novel series.

Some little side notes:
"Whoever wears the Fighting God armor becomes the Fighting God". That's incorect, the armor itself when on autopilot is the Fighting God (unclear if it has to be worn by Badi or others while being sentient but I would assume the Fighting God that's 3rd ranked in the 7GWP is the sentient armor with Badi as the wearer)
Technique God apparently uses magic stones to create a pseudo touki.
Demon God probably has multiple demon eyes (he slowed Ruijerd's movement with a demon eye). Although he can't wear touki, his Laplace factors still give him immense physical strenght (manages to beat Ruijerd at close range, crushing his bones with a punch). He also remembers the "Hito" part of Hitogami's name.
Badigadi drank the potion that made him invisible to demon eyes and then equiped the armor. We have no idea what that potion was but when paired with the armor it drove Badi mad and made him impossible to reason with. It could be related to Necrolia (the demon king Laplace fought in ODT, where he couldn't detect him with his demon eye). Badi also recognised Laplace as the Demon Dragon God which his father Necross told him he should never fight. Rifujin also said in a Q&A that during the 2nd HD war when Badi called himself the Wise Demon King that he used to wear glasses and only had 2 arms (I used to think it was just a joke but looking at Badi's nerdy personnality in his backstory I think it could be true).
Thank you for this (and for your other comments expanding on the details of this stuff) - I'm not sure how much of this information is stuff that was elaborated on in the light novel volumes that haven't been translated yet (so stuff I didn't know at all) or how much was me not remembering where various details of this aspect of the story were to re-read them and clarify stuff while I was writing this video, but it's really helpful that you have this knowledge to hand to add in! I'm actually going to pin this comment!

The fighting god armor is inert unless equipped, and slowly drains the health of its wearer. It also is extremely difficult to be unequipped. So it's more likely that Badi is the only one who is even capable of using the armor to its full potential given his immortality, meaning he's one of the few "possible" Fighting Gods in the first place. Given that Orsted very easily disposes of Alex III (North God wearing the armor), I'd assume Badi is the only "true" Fighting God.

author said in a q and a that neither the armor or badi itself is the fighting god, only when badi wears the armor is he the fighting god, but if someone else wears the armor they wont be
So from what I've understood, the gods played amongus and Hitogami was the imposter but Laplace was the one that got voted?

I think it would be great to see Orsted be the one to redeem Laplace.
We know Hitogami lies and has used his knowledge of the future to his advantage to suppress opposition. I wouldn't put it past him to spread prophecy that is contrary to Orsted's goal... Even going as far as to lead them to think they should kill the instrument of their victory... Something like unifying and restoring Laplace to his original form.
I just finished reading all of the web series and the redundancy chapters along with listening to your readings. There are so many characters and scenes I can't wait to see animated. Hopefully we will get a sequel series. There are so many characters I have to know how things go for and many other hinted at characters I want to see brought to life.

Haha! Laplace doesn't really play a part in Rudy's story though, he's just a kind of, feature of the world. And could Laplace get it up? We don't know. He is my go to example of why Rifujin is just as good at writing protagonists that don't ever think about sex at all as he is at writing pervy ones (for Old Dragon's Tale, where Laplace is the protagonist).
@@NatalieXHunter that's a very fair point. I've listened to the whole light novel and odt so I get how big of a part the first part of season 2 is in the grand scheme of things I guess it just low key hurt to see Rudy go through his ed phase lol
I think its way more likely that Laplace will be Sieg‘s son and Sieg would oppose Lara and Orsted in order to protect him. It would parallel Rudeus proclaiming he would protect Sieg and the place of Laplace‘s reincarnation would also be similar to the original timeline (Republic created by Pax and kingdom created by Pax Jr). Its also been forshadowed that Sieg will become Lara‘s and Rudeus’ enemy and Laplace factor seems somewhat genetic.

We do see Sieg up to middle age though in Oblige and there's no mention of him having any kids, let alone notable ones...
I wonder if he might be born in Lucy and Clive's line - think how much Elinalise is in that bloodline where she's Lucy's great grandmother and Clive's mom, and of course, Sylphy and Rudeus are her parents as well as Sieg's.
@@NatalieXHunter i dont think him being 30-40 (in human years) means he cant settle down and have kids. It could also be pax‘s grandchild and thats why he protects Laplace. I‘m pretty convinced Sieg will somehow oppose Lara and Orsted and him protecting Laplace seems the most likely way for that to happen considering the parallel to Rudeus at Sieg‘s birth.
Well, Sieg is only 1/8th elf, and if Sylphy as a quarter elf ages only slightly slower than a human (she looks like she's in her 40s when Rudeus is in his 70s) then I don't think there would be that much difference between Sieg and a human in terms of aging. Not saying he couldn't still have kids, given men can still have kids into old age, I just don't think that seems to be where the author is going with Sieg. It's a bit too on the nose, and he tends to do more surprising things. I saw one theory I thought was pretty interesting that Laplace is actually the person Lara is talking about looking for at the end of Redundancy, rather than Akihito. It would be much more surprising and also interesting if Lara is the one to actually side with Laplace, perhaps her divination indicating a way that she could help him and get him onside, but other characters refusing to accept it...
Laplace is a very well made character. I like him a lot.

@20:12 I agree. I think the objects are keys for a teleportation circle to open a gateway to the void world where Hitogami is at.
I don't think it was originally the condition that you have to kill the dragon kings to obtain the treasures in order to reach Hitogami. Laplace was thriving over the idea of Orsted and Perugias fighting side by side, so I suspect Hitogami's involvement as it would be inconvenient to him for Orsted to have allies.
9.9/10 times if something appears to be convenient for Hitogami, it is definitely his own machinations.
This could be. Like yeah this actually makes sense. Could also be something that happened in past loop. That orsted doesn't like very much and that's why he decided to work seperately without technique god or perguise help
@@Learner-qw1ee According Old Dragon's Tale, Laplace embedded fragments of the First Dragon God within the Dragon Generals or their successor. Which is why Rudeus believes Orsted needs to kill them in order to retrieve the fragments and access Hitogami. If you know you're going to kill someone in the future. Working with them, potentially developing a friendship with them, and growing to care for them. Might make it harder for you to do what is needed to be done when the time comes.

Well done as always alot of this I already knew from reading but, you're very insightful I didn't think to put two and two together and realize Rudy could be wrong about the gems it seems that he is.
It is an aspect of the story I definitely think will have some kind of surprise element to it when it all plays out, but until then it's all speculation really.

A: It may be possible to wear something like a pseudo-fighting spirit using a fist-sized magic crystal.
Technique God is even more misterious than his original self, i can't wait to meet him. I hope he kept the wings and scale. It would be nice to have a full dragon race in the main story.
I assume he hides due to the curse, in my headcanon he is the one who trained Orsted in the previous loops since they wouldn't fear each other.
But i wonder why Orsted refused to ask for his help. Does he feel horrible to ask one half to kill the other?
Does he have the jewel while his demon half has the treasure? Does Orsted need the jewel or the treasure from the demon half? So many questions.

One idea if I just ran into today while looking for the mushoku OSTs was maybe covering how they relate to the story
I think it be worth commenting on all them in one video or mentioning them in other videos, especially the 5th (?) one bc it seems like its lyrics are about (probably) a young Orsted
As someone who's only finished the main story and have yet to come around to the other ones, the elinalise reveal here was a "holy sht" moment for me. I had an inkling she had more to her past, but I was not expecting that.
i believe taking the treasure kills them based on on of Orsted's later POVs. He said something along the lines of he would consider putting off collecting the Mad dragon king Chaos' treasure next loop. it was around the time zanoba/rudy/cliff were working on one of their projects. I cant remember if this was main story or redundancy chapters but the way he said it implied he was the reason Chaos wasn't alive.
Yeah, that's true. Maybe it's not so much that it's their life force but that they need the parts of the God Ball (teehee) to survive in the human world or something...

Laplace can be easily presented as "The Fighting God f++ked up bigtime."
Also, I've read somewhere in the wiki that Demon Dragon Laplace was the one who gave Perugius his name.
And finally, I've also read that the Reincarnation technique that Laplace uses is not exclusive to him. It's a technique of the Dragon Clan.
Is it only demon-king Laplace the one who needs to reincarnate? This is just a silly speculation of mine, but maybe Laplace will only be able to reincarnate when his divided parts die as well. Unless that happens, his reincarnation will never be fully realized, is what I believe.

I think Laplace is a reference to the term 'Laplace's demon' which originated from a mathematical physicist named Pierre-simon Laplace. In his theory he said more ore less that if an intellect (demon) knows all forces set in motion, and all positions of all items in nature, it can almost accurately predict what they will do in future and where they will end up. It's not exactly what he said but I'm heavily paraphrasing.
I think, the literal significance is that, people judge others based on what they did in the past. They think that others will behave in those predetermined notions. But the whole point of the show is that people change and they should not be judged based on their past behavior or actions.
I think based on other elements of the plot (relating especially to Orsted and Hitogami, with both trying to predict the future based on different incomplete observations) there is a more literal theme of determinism in the story. But yes, the author did name him after that Laplace - he named quite a few characters after physicists.

Yeah, as well as Orsted, Laplace, and various other dragon tribe characters, Fitts was also chosen as a name because of a mathematician/scientist (which is why Fitts rather than Fitz is the correct spelling). There could actually be lots of them, I just don't know all the famous scientists haha! It seems like that was a way he looked for inspiration for names, though, it's quite common for authors.
Another interesting one is Norn and Aisha who are named after characters from a game he liked. I had always wondered why the name 'Norn' comes up so often in Japanese fantasy stories... I wish someone would explain to me why there are characters called 'Melty' in so many Japanese series though, that just sounds like a silly name in English!

Hey I want to ask if you can do a reading series on mushoku tensei
No, a lot of people ask me that but there are two reasons why not. First, copyright (it is officially licensed in English, unlike Old Dragon's Tale which is an unlicensed, free web novel), and secondly, it is about 2.5 million words long, and I don't really want to do nothing but readings for the rest of time! Unless I was hired to do the official audiobooks or something there isn't really a way (and that would be very unlikely too, given it's in the first person and has a male MC, and I'm a woman!). I will do more side stories though.
in which source material is the explanation of how/why laplace was split? i remember brief acknowledgement but never a real story, did i miss something?
Something intresting I thought of is does Kishirka know where laplace is imprisoned and acts kind of like a gaurdion or something considering she states her inabiliaty to follow Badi and the others when the leave the Demon continental their could be many reasons but I thought it interesting.
Laplace isn't really imprisoned. It's never stated why Kishirika can't leave the Demon Continent but I would assume she can't reincarnate if she dies in a different continent. Pretty silly but that's the only explanation I can think of.

I use a lot of different tracks in these videos but they are all from Streambeats by Harris Heller (you can find his playlists on RUclips if you look that up - he makes a lot of music that RUclipsrs and streamers are allowed to use. I use mostly his lofi stuff but he has a lot of music in other genres too).

@@NatalieXHunter orsted hatred for the human God has never been truly explained and LaPlace memories were removed but not by the human God but just because one's memories have been altered doesn't mean their subconscious has been affected AKA orsted has a secret and I guaranteed it involves his mother's death

The sequel will almost certainly happen, and it would be very weird if it didn't have Laplace's reincarnation in it after all the build up! I just hope we start getting it soon!
The end story of the girl who relives her life again and again. The country She was in was invaded by Demons and I think that this was Laplace.
Yes, most likely, but that was in a timeline that was then messed with by her causing the mass teleportation event so Laplace's reincarnation could be different to what happened there.
Rifujin busy writing orc fanfic. We might never get sequel until MT reached TP 4 and that orc fanfic got adaptation.

What if one of Rudy's descendants has a child with Orsted at some point, who ends up being a human demon dragon hybrid that and is his return? Maybe Orsted finds the books Laplace had of the old dragon era and Similar to his father names the child restoring both him and his honor as a dragon general

Great video as always. I am looking forward to the sequal, as you said, it can't be that simple, there are just too many interconnected factors. I also think Rudeus misunderstood what exactly is needed to get to Hitogami.
Maybe there is more to Laplace and the original story that Rudeus first heard from his parents reading to him seems to be only told at one side.
Not sure if I would ever see the anime adaptation of Laplace arc, but it will be an interesting ride.

With kingdoms united again under 1 banner, and also Rudy's influence on demon race I doubt next Laplace reincarnation would be terrifying.

So half of him (Demon god) with knowledge of 20000+ years of magic and a very high knowledge of war(possibly highest in the series)is not an easy opponent at all lol 💀. This part of the story always confused the hell out of me but I'm glad it's not necessary material to understand. Seems like it will come more into play in the sequel series since at the end of the day, the real bad guy is and will always be hitogami.

He is the protagonist of Old Dragon's Tales
In mushoku tensei, Orsted mentions the need for a certain individual to survive because their lineage produces Laplace and knowledge of that allows Orsted to kill the child before becoming a powerful adult. It wouldn't make sense for the treasures to be physical objects in this case because he should already know its locations from previous loops. Why wait for him to reincarnate? If the treasure is a physical object than Orsted probobly already has it and wants to kill demon Laplace because he interferes with his more knowledgeable fight (because of looping) with hitogomi.
It's probably related to the soul of dragon generals. Tbh there is so much vague stuff. Either LN later volumes or sequel will fix the problem.

The sacred treasure is probably the God cores Dragon God gets from killing the other God's maybe even the pieces of Dragon God core.

here is my theory... we know that rudy and roxys daughter needs to find a man... they think a husband but what if its the other half of laplace and when she finds this half is when the demon king laplace comes back to life. and orsted stops demon laplace from being killed and re connects the 2 halfs together. this could also be a way for orsted to find out about the mana crystal ability to be able to use his magic and that is the treasure... the ability to use his magic without fail... the crystals will prob be the way he can teleport to the in-between so the last crystal is prob hidden with his old dragon back in that house somewhere and we get our final battle.. this is just a idea i had....

Yeah I'm not going to read out Overlord or any light novel series due to both copyright issues and length. I will be making videos about Overlord and could potentially read any side stories that aren't officially translated, but I can't read the light novels as that would be basically providing an alternative to a paid product (as in, people could listen to them instead of buying the official books), and that's not legal.

This video wasn't as enjoyable as usual, Nat, though you did make some great points towards the end. I can't say what the problem was, though, it just wasn't as interesting. @@NatalieXHunter That's probably part of it, but I"ve enjoyed videos with content I knew before. It starts ok, gets kinda boring for most of it, then it gets really interesting in the last five minutes or so. I'd need to watch again to be sure, but it isn't the end of the wordl.

I think I also had to explain a lot of stuff that I've already talked about before (basically the plot of Old Dragon's Tale) in this one for completeness because not everyone finding this video because they're interested in Laplace will know the story, and naturally recapping a story isn't the most interesting thing you can do as a creator (which is why I don't make episode reviews of anything anymore, half the video ends up being recapping the episode and I sorta hate doing that).

Multiple worlds into one world is a trope I have seen in some other series especially isekai. ODT looks like it would be a multiple movie series like Lord of the Rings. Also if Rostalina is Elinalise, I hope she does remember her past at some point. Maybe Elinalise could talk Laplace out of destroying the world and fix Elinalise

Hitogami is just Japanese for 'man' 'god'. I don't think it has anything to do with Akito's name.

Along with the tens of thousands of years of experience to draw from + him having a piece of the god gem given to him by the 1st dragon god I figured he'd be unbeatable. How did badigadi actually defeat such a person?

Yes, she has it, that's why she has green hair. Rudeus also has it, as does their son Sieg. But the Laplace factor normally doesn't do anything except mean someone has certain traits associated with Laplace that they wouldn't genetically have (such as Sylphy's green hair and Rudy's large mana capacity), it just means that one day someone with it will be the vessel for Laplace to reincarnate.

Laplace was an irl French philosopher/physicist who came up with a thought experiment called 'Laplace's daemon', so his name gets used a lot in fiction because it kinda inspires people when they want to have demons in stuff. A lot of the characters in MT are named after real life scientists. So, although I don't know the vtuber in question, I would guess they're named from the real Laplace rather than being related to MT.

Yeah, that doesn't make much sense tbh lol... Elinalise is an elf and Technique God retains the Dragon race part of Laplace's knowledge of techniques. And he didn't really have a mother, the two (Technique God and Demon God Laplace) split of from Demon Dragon Laplace, who never knew his parents and was born a long time before Rostelina in a different world. Technique God is still alive but reclusive. So Elinalise could be the mother of the reincarnated Demon God Laplace, but not really anything to do with Technique God.
