As a mechanic, I've gotta say thanks for giving people properly correct information, staying on point and wrenching. AEM makes a Failsafe AFR Gauge that'll cut ignition in dangerously lean conditions automatically, set by the user through gauge presets it's the best option if you tend to melt things lol. Subscribed because of good information and good graphics:)
QUESTION: You never mentioned anything about ring gap. From past experience, on boosted engines with stock ring gap, the rings can bind and cause catastrophic stresses in the upper LANs. I figured that would be a main focus in this video from the thumbnail.
Ring gap is super important but like I said, covering every possible engine failure is a lengthy discussion. I just wanted to touch on 2 for this video. Ring gap was specifically set up for the amount of boost I was running on the engines the pistons came out of. They were both purpose built boost engines. The failure occurred because of the tune causing pre-ignition and/or detonation.
mixing by fuel would require a perfectly made or monitored ( ie programmed flex fuel sensor ) ratio in order to meter at injectors. run risk of fouling fuel system as hygroscopic settling and perhaps mismatched viscosity and pressure specs of pump and injectors.... diesel however doesnt play as nice as a secondary fuel injection or water meth injection which are tried and true in many team cars...
Detonation and preignition are generally the same thing as they both occur before the ideal time for ignition, However detonation or Knocking after the spark is usually due to the fuel air mix actually exploding all at once instead of burning in a controlled fashion out from the spark. Knocking is usually caused by poor fuel quality or too high a compression ratio for the fuel or not enough fuel in the mixture and also carbon build up and hot spots, usually a bit of carbon or a defect in the combustion chamber like a nick from a scraper used to clean off carbon buildup. Knocking can also be caused by water injection systems that dump in too much water either in total or poorly distributed causing one cylinder to get too much. Water injection is generally used to allow increased boost on low quality fuel. A mixture of 50% methanol 49% water and 1 % soluble oil is best for high boost on pump gas.
Thank you for providing easy to understand and practical Mod Videos. Since your C43 was a $200 purchase, this mod makes cents (intentionally misspelled) since you have had fun installing the mod and will make up the cost of the Benz and the parts from the income you will receive from RUclips for this Vlog.
Winnipeg Car Life I completely agree it's worth a shot for the amount of money that is already in it. But, God only knows what the other owners have done with it.
Awesome vid. Do you know the standard ring gap. If I were adding a big shot of N2O, that would be my concern. Those failed pistons look like the rings pinched. Good luck, love this channel! 😎👍🏼
speedingtube dude I thought exactly the same thing. I've seen murders where that was a problem and it looks exactly like that. Motor Trend even did an engine Masters challenge where they did that.
David Hawkins Yea, I’ve seen so many dyno fails with stripdowns showing a scored wall due to a pinched ring. A standard M113k piston is 97.25mm, so that’s 305.37mm total ring length, bit of extra heat to close the gap and that’s it, lol. He’s running a wet kit and wmi from memory so I’m sure he’s got it covered 😎👍🏼
I see you use Lambda. Maybe you should make a video on the differences between AFR calculations and Lambda and why Lambda is the way to go when tuning your car. This is something i always have to explain and would be great for others that are trying to learn,,, to know!
Mount it on the top of the steering wheel with some kind of quick release. You can mount it in the drag strip and just dismount and preserve the clean look of c63
Alex i love your channel man. Im your platinum member always asking you questions about my 98 and 99 c43 amg. I love what you do man, please dont ever stop making videos!
On my 3.8 super charged fiero I run two step colder NGK plugs as well. And it runs a liquid intercooler. I run a 3.4 pulley for the super charger and a 180 degree thermostat. I get 0 knock and I’m torn between adding a 50 shot of nitrous for hard launches or simply add a smaller pulley for more boosts. I also have a hot wire mod for the fuel pump to allow maximum voltage on full throttle. It’s also good to 500 hp. I have bigger injectors and a northstar throttle body adapter. I’m gonna have to send the pcm out to be reprogrammed. I have a nitrous kit already on hand and I can’t afford to turbo charge it yet. So in all I’m a cheap bastard. Lol. I seen plenty of cars blow up with nitrous oxide. And I don’t fill like picking up engine pieces. That fuel pump gonna need new hoses. And I never knew there’s a inline fuel pump is available for fuel injection. It could’ve save me time not to have to drop the fuel tank. As for reading the fuel ratio I use a 2 dual function scan gauge. I look at short term fuel trim and long term fuel trim. But the gauge will read o2 sensors knock sensor ect.
I say mount the Wide-Band to the dash covering that spot. I never mount accessories to places like that because I don't want holes in random parts of the car if I ever remove parts. But having a $200.00 do whatever you want toy, frees up so many options! I would go buck wild just because I could.
from what i understand, anytime you can raise cylinder pressures substantially over OEM levels, that is considered BOOST, so that can include nitrous. 💪
A few new gauges with an A-pillar cluster maybe? looks clean and in sight, or the important older guages with the new one in the a-pillar, but then again Black vs white back gauges doesn't really looks symmetrical xD
Good informative video, Alex! I've seen waaaay too many people just strap a nitrous kit without supporting mods and think it'll be OK. Even with the support mods, I've had a really close call on my old T/A once... got lucky on that one thanks to the wideband! PS: The Paxton reference cracked me up, I saw him at the MSI when I was a lot younger shortly after that game and got his autograph... still have that around here somewhere!
Those salty winters are BAAAAAAAAAAAD ! That's thing it's Ghetto AF, lmao. Looking forward to the results, w/e ends up happening I'm sure it'll be very entertaining. Good work, Mr Alex, keep it up.
Yes more maintenance incorporated videos! My 97 C280 has a fuel leak when I pump gas... I think the tank is leaking from the top because it happens more when I fill all the way... any advice?
Great vid Alex. Hey, what's your take on the M113K and concerns about the oil pick up tube gasket failing? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this and have you considered doing a video to see if yours on the E55 is in need of replacement? Thanks, keep up the great work.
I didn't notice the "this's" until you pointed them out. Haha. I think the pod should go in the ugly spot on the dash. Two birds with one stone and you can still use your vent.
Thanks for the super awesome content! This is proving to be a great series! Have you thought about doing a leak down test to check for wear on the rings. I’m starting to think your ring gap might end up being the killer on this engine, if it’s like the compression test results it may be almost factory spec. Maybe that will wait, it would be super sweet to see this thing run in the 11s, but that is going to take a fair amount of nitrous. How strong is the transmission in this car?
Jack Eagan I didn't do a leak down but the compression checked out perfectly. The stock trans is very strong and this one is in great shape. Hopefully it holds up
LegitStreetCars, yeah I remember that, I’m actually concerned that the rings are barely worn. When people boost LS motors the ones that hold up the best are high mileage ones because the ring end gap is greater than stock. Looks like the m113 has forged connecting rods and a short stroke (for the 4.3). So I’m betting when something breaks it’s going to be your rings, as they will but up from thermal expansion due to the additional heat and damage the ring lands. But this should only be a real concern when you’re running a huge shot of nitrous ( like trying to double the stock power output or more) and want to do it repeatedly.
Hey. Thanks for the informative videos! I've been curious to know if it's possible to convert a 4th generation TA's rear end to an independent rear suspension? Would there even be any gains to make it worthwhile?
Colder spark plugs are "better" at any given engine speed or specifically at high RPMs? I mean, because as the engine is working faster, the spark ignites more times per second, therefore less heat is able to dissipate before it ignites again, compared to a low RPM range where the plug has greater amount of time to "cool down". Just wondering.
Apex Seal too cold and they foul up and cause misfires. You need to get them in the correct range for you cylinder temps and pressures and I wouldn't change the stock heat range without advice from my tuner.
Hey Alex, I am running the same car, but I have one question for you - why wouldn't you first do the 55 AMG swap on the old beater? $800 from LKQ and that is a solid and simple 65hp/75tq upgrade? At the same time... I get it... it's a $200 car. But the 55 AMG swap is a wicked one!
I totally hear ya. In this case I just want to try the nitrous out on the original engine. I could always do a 55 swap later. The nitrous kit would swap right over too!!
Alex, I hope your working with a TV producer by now, your delivery is excellent and content and production superb! You should definitely quit your day job!!
Doesn't the car already have a wideband O2 sensor installed? My 2003 Sentra came with one. Or is that car so old it's running an old skool narrow band?
OK. HOW THE HELL DID YOU PAY 200 BUX FOR AMG MERCEDES?!?!?!?!?!?!? MORE INFO PLEASE!? LOVE THIS STUFF AND HOW MUCH DID YOUR NITROUS KIT COST??? PLZ LET US KNOW
3:00 this is false, the fuel air mixture becomes easier to ignite as it gets closer to TDC because gasses get hotter as they are compressed. The reason for high output ignition is that air is an electrical insulator, and the more dense air fuel mix requires more voltage to jump the gap.
I'm telling you, better open up the ring gaps or a lot of cylinder pressure will take a chunk out of the edge your piston..... And it looks like that might actually be what happened to your other Pistons, if that happened near the ring gaps.
Hey David. I have no intentions of doing that kind of work on this car. It was just too cheap to invest that kind of time. A 100 shot shouldn't be too bad on this engine. My other engines were gapped for boost.
LegitStreetCars my bad, I'm accustomed to working on older cars where that would be just a weekend job. I should know that it would take longer since I have an 06 E500 4matic myself.
3:30 'pre-ignition does not get detected by the knock sensor' Are you for real?! So what exactly does the knock sensor detect then? How is knock different to pre-ignition?
Sorry, was a bit hasty in making this comment.. I guess when it comes to pre-ignition, by the time the ECU wants to do anything about it, it's likely too late. I'm sure the knock sensor will see it though
Saying “THIS” a lot is not as bad as saying...WITH THAT BEEING SAID...a lot...some channels do it a lot. And you might take a closer look at the diff in the back...looks like the gasket had gone
No, used LS engines (crate engines) are not that expensive. The thing is if he had it heavily tuned and the engine blows up, almost every "extra" components are lost, and these can easily double the price of the stock engine.
Why don't you have 250k subs?

Gamma Light Thanks! I do like the fail safe option too, I'll add it in the description box.
Production value and content are always 11/10! And of course the garage is out of this world!
The cylinder cutaway animations are awesome on this Alex. Makes it so much easier to understand. Production values through the roof! Keep it up!
I followed for your trans am but I find myself watching all of your videos. You do a great job and I always learn a lot!
Tony from RaceIQ is a beast. He tuned my CLS 63 S AMG and it rips. Good people over there 👍🏼
Feel free to add the entire install of the fuel pump along with the new hoses/brackets. Small details like that make your channel much better.

Everytime I watch your videos I'm so jealous of the garage space!
James Alexander Its really not that big. Only 600 sqft. But for Chicago that's pretty good
I don’t know much about Nitrous. So this was informative.
This was a very informative video. Helped me understand knock and pre-detonation ALOT better. Time to have the timing on my 3800 impala reduced haha
Joshua Brownlee what about a little bit of diesel fuel in the gas to prevent detonation?
mixing by fuel would require a perfectly made or monitored ( ie programmed flex fuel sensor ) ratio in order to meter at injectors. run risk of fouling fuel system as hygroscopic settling and perhaps mismatched viscosity and pressure specs of pump and injectors.... diesel however doesnt play as nice as a secondary fuel injection or water meth injection which are tried and true in many team cars...

LegitStreetCars yep😱
Unfortunately, I think it probably will.
For $200, does it really matter? Lol. But no, i don't think it will
I don't think it will, I'm happy you went with a wet nitrous kit, there way safer!

I'm actually hoping the 179,000 miles have opened them up a bit.
LegitStreetCars if only it worked like that lol

C43 hype. I love this car
Alex, another great and informative video! I really like that 'live time' mapping with the computer which I would luv 2 have on my V12 Merc!
What about Ring Gap? You might want to open up the gap on your piston rings or it will kill a motor quick with a lot of cylinder pressure.
super informative video like always Alex , keep it up with BIG BODY BENZ !
Leonit Hasani Thanks brother

Good job on your videos. 👍👍

Great Basketball intervideo bit!
Very informative!
great video , very informative ,
Its a Left Side and Right of the motor.. should you have two air-fuel sensors?
very good educational video, Thank You
very underraded site you need more folowers
Your production is not bad. I'm surprised you are under 200K subscribers. Something must be wrong with you. * I kid, I kid.

ain't nobody got time for pre-detonation
What brand and price is the fuel air gauge? Want to run one on my trans am.
Dont need to worry about spark plugs ignition coils getting spoit in a diesel engine
Ain’t nobody got time for that !
Mount it on the sun visor and keep it flipped down.
You should have changed into Mr.Warden style shorts for that spark plug b ball!!

Paxon for 3!
You should try adding a cheap water and methanol injection along with the nitrous.... That should help prevent detonation, wouldn't it?
Yea that could help for sure.
LegitStreetCars I have heard of people doing it on the cheap just using their windshield wiper reservoir. Not sure how that would work though.
What’s your IAT on your e55 after the cooling mods ?
8:12
damn that's one leaky diff. lol
Mount the pod on the blemish on the dash.
very good video
Alex, I hope your working with a TV producer by now, your delivery is excellent and content and production superb! You should definitely quit your day job!!
Luke Gilbert I wish I could but I'm still very far from that
Can I do the same thing to my E500 W211?
Say Alex, what is pinging? Is this similar to Pre detonation, And I have heard it on my truck when accelerating hard sometimes
jfalatre Pinging is just another work for knock or detonation.
Man, look at that leaky diff cover!
dude I wish I live near you, I would buy an AMG E55 in a heartbeat...I cant fix car for shit
Doesn't the car already have a wideband O2 sensor installed? My 2003 Sentra came with one. Or is that car so old it's running an old skool narrow band?
Maurice Searcy Oh yea it's old school narrow bands
Knocks on table when whole garage is paneled in wood. 😂
Butterffinger5678 Haha, very good point
You gonna reseal and inspect that diff?
Anthony Krieger Probably not. The level is fine just an oil leak I really don't care to fix.
Does that nitrous kit fit on the w210 e55
Pls do a mod on external automatic transmission cooler and tell us if it has good efforts,
Boby
OK. HOW THE HELL DID YOU PAY 200 BUX FOR AMG MERCEDES?!?!?!?!?!?!? MORE INFO PLEASE!? LOVE THIS STUFF AND HOW MUCH DID YOUR NITROUS KIT COST??? PLZ LET US KNOW
Google Account Check out the C43 playlist. The first video tells the story of how I found it
What’s up with the T/A? I miss something? Haven’t seen any clips of it lately
2001pontiacta Just made a video with the TA and another White turbo WS6. Check it out
What is with the leaking rear diff?
pre-detonation seems like something that would happen if the cylinder walls or piston parts get too hot... too much rpm.
3:00 this is false, the fuel air mixture becomes easier to ignite as it gets closer to TDC because gasses get hotter as they are compressed. The reason for high output ignition is that air is an electrical insulator, and the more dense air fuel mix requires more voltage to jump the gap.
Why not use diesel fuel in off-road engines?
Lord, I hope I'm not the only one who gets the Paxton reference.... p. S. I have an oil painting of that shot
Yes of John Paxton....
Making the shot..
Haha, what a game man. Big Bulls fan over here.
on the busted dash obviously
Dbn Poldermans doesn't block anything, stays in your peripheral vision, covers up a mess
I'm telling you, better open up the ring gaps or a lot of cylinder pressure will take a chunk out of the edge your piston..... And it looks like that might actually be what happened to your other Pistons, if that happened near the ring gaps.

LegitStreetCars but honestly, I hope you do it in progressions, slowly, until the engine does actually go to bits, LOL.
What's the dimensions on that garage wanting to build one similar for my lift
20 Wide, 30 deep, 12 foot walls, 18 feet to the peak of the roof.
Mount in left pilar
why dont u have 2mil subs?
The pump and filter are awful close to the exhaust aren't they?
That diff leaking a bit lol ?
3:30 'pre-ignition does not get detected by the knock sensor'
Are you for real?! So what exactly does the knock sensor detect then? How is knock different to pre-ignition?
jackal575 I explained the difference in this video. Keep watching. But the knock sensors detect knock which is another term for detonation
Sorry, was a bit hasty in making this comment.. I guess when it comes to pre-ignition, by the time the ECU wants to do anything about it, it's likely too late.
I'm sure the knock sensor will see it though
Nitrous open the gap in those piston rings
I’m not a big fan of spray
Suprised it did that mileage without exploding, without nitrous...lol
Saying “THIS” a lot is not as bad as saying...WITH THAT BEEING SAID...a lot...some channels do it a lot. And you might take a closer look at the diff in the back...looks like the gasket had gone
Differential leak?
Dan Ahn oh yea
Used engines ain't so bad in price if it's a common engine.
No, used LS engines (crate engines) are not that expensive. The thing is if he had it heavily tuned and the engine blows up, almost every "extra" components are lost, and these can easily double the price of the stock engine.
