Moe Howard once said, Dudley was as much of a part of the Stooge Family as any of the other fine actors and actresses that frequented each and every show,, he was a friend and will be sorely missed.
Dudley Dickerson is one of the most magnificent actors in history who unfortunately never given much credit. R.I.P.
A very underrated comedian. And...he was never made to look stupid for being black. He screamed, ran, panicked....just like Moe, Larry, Curley and Shemp did. They were all equal. A very funny man.

When I was a kid I watched The Three Stooges every morning while I ate breakfast. I got excited every time Mr. Dickerson was on. He was sooo funny. A truly talented man! Wish he would have been on more.
That scene with the lion and his reaction after realizing that his shoe brush is actually the lion’s tail is one of the funniest things that I have ever seen. The lion’s reaction to having his tail used as a shoe brush is hilarious too!! 🤣🤣
One of my favorites too. I can see why it had everyone including him laughing so hard. You can hear it in the final release of the film. XD
Not only that, but it was supposed to be Moe, but Dudley did a better job and was more funny.

The Jewish were certainly the victims of plenty of it in that era too. Luckily it didn't rob us of the Stooges, or the Marx Brothers.
I remember reading Moe's autobiography that he and the other stooges refused to perform to segregated venues.

It's amazing how expressive he can be with just a slight turn of his head or movement of his eyes. The more exaggerated reactions, etc., are top-notch as well, but those subtle things that he incorporated into his reactions are what made Dudley Dickerson a truly great comedian.

This fellow was a perfect accompaniment to the Stooges. As masterful performer of slapstick comedy who was underutilized in their films. Each one of the Stooge's films in which he appeared are among the funniest they made. They still make me laugh to this day even though I have seen them dozens of times. Thank you for sharing this compilation of his work.
I will always remember that scene with Curly in wax and Dudley "you sho is ugly" gets me every time

I liked how he turns around, sees Curly covered in paste (or something, I can't remember), flinches, then goes "You sho is ugly". But I just love seeing him on the screen. He's hilarious 😂

Man, Dudley is just too funny. Despite discrimination being present back in those days, I'm really happy to see this comedian (Dudley Dickerson) be part of the Stooge's life in these shorts! He's just too hilarious and funny.
Dudley Dickerson did have "what the hell?" moments.
In fact in those days it was very rare to have a black person in episodes like these.
Not so rare, but they were playing stereotypical roles like cook, porter, security guard, etc., like Dudley played in these shorts. Dudley appeared in something like 134 films (mostly shorts).

When the lion ripped the seat of Dudley's pants, and he screams the line "I'm losing my mind", that's about 7:02, listen carefully, you can hear the crew laughing in the background. They couldn't control themselves.

IMO one of the most hilarious and greatest lines in any Stooges film, "Help, Help I'm loosing my mind!" Still brings down tears of joy!
In the background a director had a laugh if you listen closely!😀

Dudley was just as funny as the Stooges in the parts he played.....sometimes even more funny. The studio execs should have used him a lot more than they did. A great actor and comedian!!!

Dudley Dickerson was one of my most favorite of additional cast members. His double takes were things of beauty, and he brought wonderful physicality to his gags.
A talented man who knew his craft and was blessed by the gods of comedy with the great gift of timing. You either had it or you didn't and Mr. Dickerson had it with his body, his expressions and his comebacks. Very difficult to pull off but he was a pro and it's great to see him honored with tributes like these.

This, to me, is the funniest of all the Three Stooges' skits. I've watched it multiple hundreds of times, and I still can't stop the belly laughs!

I didn't realize that this gentleman was in a lot of different stooges episodes. I've watched The three stooges for decades and wow I didn't know he was in that many shorts . After all these years these episodes still make me laugh never gets old.
From start to finish this had me laughing with tears. Great post about a fantastic talent. The Dudley Dickerson Scream just cracks me up beyond control. Thank you Michael Bradley for this post and the great quality. Well done. Even during those days, this man was so talented and his comedic timing impeccable. Props to the Three Stooges for giving this talented man chances to show his talent to all.

The sequence starting about 5:00 is probably the first time a black and white man held hands for an extended time in American film history. The Stooges broke many barriers!

@@MichaelBradley1967 well, interracial or not we're all Human. I used to know a White Woman who Married a Black Man. They were very close and I thought it was cool. I'm a White Man with some Cherokee Native American Ancestry. But I have a Girlfriend who lives in Great Britain named Tia Mason.
She's doing everything possible to help her Mom and her little Sister with things. She's probably saving as much money as she can to afford the US Citizenship and Plane Ticket to America. It'll definitely take time though.
It might just be me, but I'd prefer moving to the UK myself. Good luck either way.

If I'm not mistaken, the last clip is also the only episode where both Curly and Shemp are present, and the last time Curly was seen in a 3 Stooges short.
Correct. Though a second "last" episode was filmed. "In June 1948, Howard filmed a second cameo as an irate chef for the short Malice in the Palace (1949), but due to his illness, his performance was not deemed good enough and his scenes were cut."

When Dudley said that in Hold That Lion the whole cast burst out laughing that they stopped filming so everyone could breath again.
Moe was originally supposed to do the lion part but Dudley makes it funnier.

Bill kennedy talked about moe quite often before his death. Bill said moe was stand up guy who would give anybody a break if it was so requested of him. He also said it was moe who suggested using a great many of the extras to jules white. Moe also told an interviewer he would do anything for a laugh even use an unknown if that's what it would take. Lastly, if moe had a party is the works this same funny guy would be invited too it......

That guy was funny as hell in the shorts of The Three Stooges.Every gag was a crying from laughing stunt.
There was an African-American Comedian named Mantan Moreland who was mentioned in replacing Shemp after he passed away. However due to Joe Besser's contract with Columbia, the studio chose Besser.
Always a treat seeing Dudley in an episode. Between the house electricity getting replaced by water, and the handholding scene. Comedy gold, basically.
Dudley Dickerson and Mantan Moreland are only two of my most favorite actors/comedians ever!! They were not ridiculed they were superb! I have never laughed so hard while watching them perform. True actors of their day.
He made each episode better with his reactions, and nobody could ever fall better than Dudley Dickerson.
The stooges took care of Dudley, paying him well and bringing him back in new episodes despite the discrimination in that day.
